ECCLESHALL
Today it’s the second round of the MEN United League Challenge Cup and the first of three home cup ties over the next few weeks. Our guests today are Eccleshall from Division One who we welcome back to The Recreation Ground for the first time since our previous meetings here a few years back during the 2012-13 season, our first in the NWCFL. The first ever game between our two clubs was on 6th October 2012 when we played host in a first round NWCFL Challenge Cup tie, running out 4-0 winners thanks to goals from Aston, S Jones, Baldwin Willis and Walsh. The home and away league fixtures came late in the season with a midweek game here in late February 2013 which ended in a 3-1 home win thanks to a Scot Jones brace and an own goal. The return away fixture in Eccleshall was another tense midweek affair when a late Lee Malkin strike was just enough to give West a 1-0 win. This season Eccleshall haven’t played as many games as other teams in Division 1 due to various cup commitments and although they are currently 18 th in the table, closer inspection of results to date shows that all their league defeats bar one have been by a single goal margin, including a narrow 3-2 defeat away to pace setters and leaders Barnton last Saturday. However, their cup exploits this season are another story with their last 3 cup games going to extra time and penalties. Their arrival here today is the result of a 4-3 penalty victory against Chadderton in the first round, when the scores were level at 3-3 after extra time. They are also still in the Staffordshire FA Vase after another penalty shoot out, this time 7-6 away at Cheadle, when it finished 0-0 after extra time. We are facing a determined team today who never give up and we need to be on our game as we all know anything can happen in the cup. We extend a warm welcome to everyone from Eccleshall this afternoon and wish them all a safe return trip back down the M6 later this evening. MAINTAINING MOMENTUM Tuesday evening’s game against Nelson was another indication of our improved form and consistency following the great away win at Squires Gate when we bounced back quickly to erase the memories of the unfortunate goings on against Cammell Laird. Nelson are just above us in the table, another hard team to break down and it took a marvelous opening goal to put us ahead by the interval. Nic Evangelinos turned and crashed the ball home after excellent work on the right flank from Ben Steer who broke clear to get behind the defence and cut the ball back to Nic. The second goal arrived in the early stages of the second half with Steer again the provider, this time from a long throw which Matt Eckersley looped over the keeper. The result was sealed with about 10 minutes left when Rick Gleave came off the bench to crash home a tremendous left footed drive and round off another solid performance. Whilst we were not as good as our best moments against Abbey Hey and Squires Gate the result was very important in maintaining our momentum and lifting us into the top half of the table going into the next 2 weekends of cup games. THE FA VASE Next Saturday will be a very tough challenge when we host Morpeth Town who are currently flying high in second place in the Northern League with only two defeats so far this season. The FA Vase has been dominated in recent years by Northern League sides with North Shields lifting the trophy at Wembley last May. Morpeth are currently ahead of North Shields so we know we’re facing one of the fancied teams to go the distance and get to Wembley this season. However, Glossop got to Wembley last year after squeezing past us 2-1 and as we’ve already said, anything can happen in the cup. Morpeth face a 3 hour plus coach ride en route to the game following a midweek away game against 4 time Vase winners Whitley Bay ahead of the visit to Chorlton. This will be probably the biggest game in our history and we really want to see a big crowd supporting the team next weekend. Steve Settle’s Notes Good Afternoon and welcome to Brookburn Road for this afternoons MEN United Cup fixture against Eccleshall. It’s a pleasure to be able to welcome their management team, players, officials, and fans for what promises to be an exciting game. Although Eccleshall will be disappointed with some of their results at the start of this year’s campaign all of their games have been tight and we know ourselves that sometimes not getting the rub of the green can be the difference between winning and losing. As such we won’t be underestimating todays opponents and this fixture provides us with the opportunity to progress in the league cup, something we desperately want to do! That being said we come into today’s game on the back of some really outstanding performances. There were glimpses earlier on in the season in the 2nd half against Northwich at home, and away at Alsager that we had the makings of a really good team. I’m delighted that over the past month or so we have begun to show some consistency. At the start of the season I sat down with the lads and spoke to them about some key objectives for this season. At the top of my list was that I wanted us to score more goals. Consequently is really pleasing that in the last 6 games we’ve scored 33 goals. I know that figure is skewed by the Dinnington game but even without those goals we’ve managed to bag 18 in the last 5. We will be using today’s game to ensure that some of the players that have not had much game time recently get some minutes under their belt. We do have some strength in depth and I believe it’s important that if and when players get an opportunity they are sharp enough to take that opportunity. I’m sure we will need the depth throughout November and December so I’m looking for the likes of Johnny Pozier, Rusty, and Ricky to show their quality and enjoy the runout today. Following Saturdays 4-0 win at Squires Gate we were able to overcome Nelson on Tuesday to keep the run going. It’s perhaps an overused cliché but the sign of good team is when you can win without playing well.
This was a case in point on Tuesday night. I didn’t think we played very well in the first half but one moment of quality saw us get in behind down the right hand side which allowed Nic’s quality to shine through with a great finish. He’s been on fire since returning and we are delighted with his form going into the big Vase game next weekend. Without getting ahead of ourselves, next Saturday will arguably be the biggest game in the clubs history. The FA Vase is obviously a great competition and we couldn’t have got a much tougher tie! Morpeth are flying in the Ebac Northern League and they will be really tough opponents. That being said we will cause them problems and we can hopefully take advantage of their long journey to cause an upset. The fans will play a big part in cheering the lads on next week so I’d like to issue a bit of a rallying call to invite members of your family, friends, work colleagues, neighbours etc. down to what promises to be a really good game. On the injury front we are hoping to have the results of Simmo’s MRI Scan this week, we all have our fingers crossed for positive news. Yahya will hopefully be back in training next week following the knock he picked up against Cammell Laird. Unfortunately we will be without the services of Mark Rogers for the next couple of weeks. Mark’s brother has just had a baby in Australia and Mark has some Uncle duties to take care of out there! Whilst we will miss him it’s great to get Scott Mason and Rick Gleave back involved with the squad as they both have great quality and have been important for us in the past 2 seasons. West 3 Nelson 0 …match report West recorded back to back wins and back to back clean sheets as they registered a comfortable 3-0 win at home to Nelson. West were forced into two changes as Lewis Schofield returned from injury in place of Richmond Botchey at left back whilst Scott Mason returned in the middle in the place of the absent Mark Rogers.
Despite the changes West started brightly and almost took the lead after two minutes when Ben Steer’s long throw bounced awkwardly inside the six yard box and was almost deflected into the net by a Nelson defender in what would have been a freak goal. West continued to be positive and had the game’s first shot on target in the 9th minute when Mason found some room 25 yards out, his long range effort was goal bound but deflected by a Nelson boot into the hands of the goalkeeper. West took the lead on 14 minutes as Schofield raced 40 yards down the left, his low cross found Ash Woods who played his wide on the right to Ben Steer, he kept the ball alive on the by-line and pulled back a low cross which found Nic Evangelinos whose first time effort rocketed into the top left hand corner.
A minute later a strong Matt Eckersley shot was held by the Nelson keeper but only at the second attempt. On 65 minutes It was 2-0 as Steer throw a long ball into Eckersley at the near post and his flicked on header tucked the ball just inside the far post to give the centre back his third goal of the season. Seven minutes later it was almost three as Woods made a superb run down the right, his low cross inside found Callum Jones whose first time shot was tipped round the post by the boot of the Nelson goalkeeper. Steve Settle made a double change as Botchey and Rick Gleave replaced Schofield and Steer before Dan Russell replaced Evangelinos. Two of these subs combined for the third goal as Gleave played a one-two with Russell at the edge of the area, Russell’s brilliant touch played in Gleave fired a rocket into the top left hand corner to hand West a comprehensive victory.

West pressed again as they continued to threaten from set pieces the best of which fell to Kay after a Steer overhead kick and only a late block prevented Kay from making it 2-0. Nelson responded with a couple of efforts over the bar but Hayden BuckleySmith was largely a spectator in the West goal in the first half. The half was brought to an end as West had another effort cleared off the line from a corner. The second half began with Nelson’s best chance of the game as they found some room in front of goal but fired over from the edge of the penalty area.

Squires Gate 0 West 4 ‌match report It was a day on the coast to remember for Ben Steer as he bagged a brace to secure West's first ever win at the Royal British Legion Stadium. West travelled to Blackpool with several changes from the side that lost at home to Cammell Laird in the week as Jamie Wolden, Sam Mitten, Jordan Poole and Gary Lilley were all given game time with the reserves. West manager Steve Settle was able to recall Richmond Botchey back from injury and into the starting line up in place of injured Yaya Saeed whilst he reshuffled the front four handing Ben Steer a start on the right wing with Nic Evangelinos moving to the left. Captain Mark Rogers replaced Poole in midfield whilst there were places in the squad for Scott Mason and Lewis Schofield. If the manager was looking to ensure that the shake up would remove any hangover from Tuesday's game it had an immediate impact as West created the games first chance inside 60 seconds when Matty Kay fired just over the bar from 30 yards. It was a signal of intent for West who created another chance from the resulting goal kick, as the header won in midfield was played out left to Evangelinos who cut in from the left and fired his right footed shot just wide of the post. West's dominance didn't relent throughout the entirety of the first half and should have made it 1-0 on 7 minutes when Woods burst down the right, raced into the box but with two men waiting in the middle he forced the Squires Gate keeper Fletcher into a block at his near post. Woods went close again on 10 minutes when Evangelinos and Lee Gavin combined in the final third to play in Woods but his goal bound shot was deflected wide for a corner. West would go close again with three more chances but failed to force the goalkeeper into a save. On 18 minutes the Squires Gate goalkeeper was forced into another good save, this time from Gavin as he was played in with a wonderful lay off from Kay after an Evangelinos run when he cut inside again from the left. From the corner West threatened again as Matt Eckersley headed a difficult chance over. After the initial onslaught Squires Gate brought themselves into the game and worked Hayden Buckley-Smith when a well worked free kick found Mark Buchan at the edge of the penalty are but the West goalkeeper saved comfortably.

The respite for Squires Gate was brief as on 33 minutes West had a great chance cleared off the line from a Mark Rogers first time shot after a Woods pull back. Two minutes later Evangelinos, again cut inside from the left and fired a rising shot to the near post from the edge of the penalty area which the Squires Gate goalkeeper could only tip round the post. From the corner, it was initially cleared but it fell back to the taker Matty Kay, he made no mistake with the cross, curling a wonderful ball into the middle and Ben Steer added the touch as the ball crept inside the far post to give West a deserved one-nil lead on 36 minutes. West almost doubled their lead from the kick off as West won the ball back, it found Evangelinos again on the left, who again cut inside, he played a deft one-two with Kay but he curled his shot over the bar. On 40 minutes it should have been 2-0 as Gavin was released one-on-one with the keeper who slipped racing out of his goal however it seemed to be enough as Gavin, in front of an empty net and the keeper on the floor, missed the target altogether shooting from the edge of the penalty area. Luckily for West it didn't cost them as on the verge of half time a ball was played over the right full back to Steer, 30 yards out he saw the goalkeeper off his line and brilliantly lobbed him with a first time effort to give West a deserved 2-0 half time lead and for Steer, a real collectors item of a goal. As West kicked off the second half the travelling support may have been forgiven for expecting an avalanche of goals but it was not the case as, to their credit, Squires Gate responded and had the half's first chance as a 30 yard over the shoulder volley was deflected wide for a corner. On 51 minutes Steer, in search of a hat-trick, volleyed just over from 20 yards out after a great first touch had lifted the ball over his markers head. The two teams exchanged chances with Woods again forcing a good save from the home team goalkeeper after he cut inside from the left. On the hour mark Steer thought he might have had his hat-trick as his near post header from a corner landed on top of the crossbar, bounced, landed on the cross bar again and bounced away. On 63 minutes Steer and Woods combined in the final third with some quick passing, they played in Kay who shot just over the bar.
Squires Gate Report continued A minute later West had another great chance as Woods did brilliantly down the right hand side, his low cross along the six yard box found Evangelinos in the middle but his flick flew inches past the far post. Squires Gate didn't give up and had their best chance on 71 minutes when a corner was headed just over at the far post. However there would be no comeback for Squires Gate and Evangelinos secured the three points on 82 minutes when he cut inside from the
right hand side and fired a rocket of a shot into the bottom right hand corner and beating the keeper clipping the inside of the post on the way in. West weren't finished and added a fourth in the final minute was Mark Rogers broke past two, played a lovely one-two with Woods who pass released him into the box and Rogers casually finished with his left foot past the Squires Gate keeper to give him his first goal of the season. It was an important win for West after their midweek defeat, it was a first clean sheet of the season and their fourth win in the last five that lifted Steve Settle's side to 13th place.

Looking back our feature on Football History No 12 We all know about the exploits of the giants that are Manchester United and Manchester City. Across the country, and even the world, iconic places and people like Old Trafford, Maine Road, Bert Trautman and George Best are regularly spoken of with fondness and reverence. But Manchester has seen a great many more interesting pieces of footballing history. Here, we explore some of the lesser known aspects of Manchester's rich tapestry of football history.
Manchester North End There are many long since defunct clubs in the Manchester area, but few are as mysterious as the enigmatic and smoke-shrouded club known as Manchester North End. North End were formed in 1922, playing under the name of New Cross F.C. They began life competing in the Lancashire Combination, later switching to the Cheshire League before eventually folding in 1939 whilst playing in the Manchester League. Throughout this time, they competed in the FA Cup, facing off against sides such as Marine, Stalybridge Celtic and even the famous Northern Nomads! The club never made it beyond the fourth qualifying round. However, little else is known about Manchester North End, with most information about them seemingly lost in time. Notably missing is any information as to where they played home games, although they appear to have used Stockport's Edgeley Park as a home venue on at least one occasion. Despite the club having folded in 1939, their story did not end there. 60 years later, in 1939, then Oldham Athletic chairman Ian Stott hatched a bizarre plan to revive the club.
But he did not plan to reform the club in the conventional manner, by building it up from the bottom. Instead, he intended to merge Oldham with fellow local league sides Bury and Rochdale. Despite his claims that his plan was “the only possible way the 3 clubs can survive”, Bury and Rochdale gave the barmy plot short shrift and over 15 years later all 3 clubs are still playing league football. But even Stott's plan was not the last the world heard from Manchester North End. Years later, a little known author by the name of Mike Holden penned a thriller novel entitled “If Only”. The book centres around a Chinese lawyer and an ageing businessman attempting to rescue North End from going bust in the modern day, apparently not realising they are 70 years too late. The book, switches between tenses at an alarming rate, features a plotline as mad as a march hare and is riddled with spelling and grammatical errors (including repeated use of the nonsense phrase “jolt from the blue”). It ends with the main characters being kidnapped by gang members and held at gunpoint in the south stand at Old Trafford. West fans will undoubtedly be devastated to hear that this tome is only available in the US or Australia and it is unavailable for purchase in the UK.

Visiting Brookburn Road today ECCLESHALL Eccleshall Football Club was reformed in 1971 and nicknamed the Eagles. The club's meeting place was the George and Dragon, Eccleshall and whose landlord the late Mr. M. Beale led the first committee. At that time the team was made up of locals and staff from the Eccleshall Secondary School which also provided training and playing facilities. The club was called Eccleshall Old Boys Football Club. In 1974 the team won their first trophies, the MidStaffs 3rd Division Cup and were also runners-up in that division, gaining promotion to Division 2. In 1976 they won the 2nd Division Cup in the same league. Interest grew and a second team was formed at the end of the 1975-76 season, ready for the following season. Old Boys was dropped from the club's name. In 1979 the first team joined the Staffordshire County League (North) and a third team was formed. With this came the problem of pitches to play on. In 1981 after much hard fund raising and with the help of grants and a loan a four acre field was purchased at Pershall. In the same year the first team moved into the Premier Division. Work began converting it into a football ground. In 1982 a building was purchased from British Telecom and with lots of hard work during that and the following year on the building, car park and the pitch, the ground was ready. The ground was christened Pershall Park. In 1983 a small covered area was put up commonly known as 'The Shed'. In 1983-84 season the first team won the Staffs County League Premier Division Championship, the Premier Division Cup and the May Bank Cup. In the 1984-5 and 1985-86 seasons the club reached the Staffs F.A. Vase finals only to be the losing team on both occasions. In the 1984-85 season the Staffordshire Senior League was formed from the Staffs County League Premier Division came the majority of clubs of which Eccleshall was one. In 1987-88 the third team reached the final of the Mid-Staffs Borough Cup final only to finish on the losing side. The team was disbanded at the end of that season.

The second team joined the Staffs County League (North) for the 1987-88 season. In 1989-90 the club won the Staffs Senior League (now the Springbank Vending Midland League). In the 1990-91 season the club entered the F.A. Vase for the first time and a small extension was added to the clubhouse. In 1991-92 the club reached the F.A. Vase 2nd round, having gone through all the preliminary stages but lost at home to Wisbech Town 2-0 in front of a record crowd of 368. A steady improvement from the mid 90's in both the first and second teams led to a fairly successful seasons without winning any silverware. The first team have faired well in the league since the mid 90's finishing 3rd (97-98), 6th (98-99), 2nd (99-00) and 3rd (00-01). Planning permission has been granted for both floodlights and a covered seated stand and the club are in the process of applying for grants and fund raising. In 2001-2002 season Eccleshall first team won the Springbank Vending Midland League Championship. The reserve team resigned from the West Midland (Regional) League and rejoined the Staffordshire County League (the word north being dropped from the leagues name) for the 2002-2003 season with what is hoped will be a team based on young players. 2002-2003 work was completed to allow the club to apply to the North West Counties should the team finish in the top two of the league. The Staffordshire F.A. Vase was won for the first time in the club's history and the championship retained and promotion granted. The reserves won the Staffordshire County League and were beaten finalists in the Leek Cup, being defeated by Alsager Town reserves from the higher Midland League. When an application to the Midland League for 2003-2004 was turned down and the reserves have rejoined the West Midland (Regional League). A third team was reformed, after 16 years, to play in the Staffordshire County League in 2003-2004, based on youth players from the club's Sunday sides. This only lasted for the one season due to inability of the club to find a good management team to run the youngsters.
ECCLESHALL History continued On the pitch 2003-2004 brought no rewards but the club's application to the Football Foundation for £87,500 for funding floodlights and levelling the pitch, was granted. Work on both projects started during the closed season.
The team finished the season in 9th place, it's highest since joining the league. However, Dave Dale handed in his resignation in February 2011 and was quickly replaced with former Nantwich Town manager, Peter Hall.
2004-2005 was disappointing; hopes were high after a year of consolidation but performances faltered after Christmas and the team finished in mid-table.
Peter Hall declined the invitation to stay on for 2011-2012 season so the job was offered to Kieron Hammett who had assisted Peter Hall. Kieron accepted and appointed Roy Lane as his assistant. Following a turbulent start to the season the team settled and ended with a reasonable league position. During the closed season and Kieron Hammett deciding to quit with nearly all the players leaving before the start of the new season.
Manager Bob Askey decided to stand down at the end of 2004-2005 and hand the reigns to brother Mark, who had been running the reserves. The reserves changed their name to Eccleshall AFC and with a separate affiliation became a senior club in their own right. This allowed them to move back to the Staffs County Senior League Premier Division for the start of 2005-2006. During this season the club reached the Staffs F.A. Vase final only to lose by the odd goal. 2006-2007 promised much but league form took a nose dive after Christmas (a familiar story at the club) and the club finished in mid table after holding a promotion spot in the first half of the season. 2007-2008 held hopes of a more consistent season but things started badly and only improved towards the end. A new management team in Dave Dale and Gary Worthington took over prior to the start of the 2008-2009 season, when Mark Askey resigned due to lack of time to commit to the job in hand. The new management team had spent the season before coaching the first team squad under Mark Askey. Gary Worthington left the management team half way through 2009-2010 with Duncan Maydew taking over as assistant.
For the start of 2012-13 season Dave Porter was appointed as manager with Kevin Reeves as his assistant. Dave Porter and Kevin Reeves both resigned at the end of September following a heavy Staffs FA Vase defeat and after a poor start in the league. Reserve team manager Liam James took over the job and steadied the ship and in February 2013a new management team of Dean Sibson and John Mayer. Unfortunately the side lingered near the foot of the table. John was unable to commit time for the 2013-14 season so Dean was left in sole charge. Unfortunately results didn't improve and in November 2013 Dean left the club, by mutual consent. The club offered Shaun Hollinshead the chance to take charge of the team which he agreed to. He appointed Dave Johnson and Phil Bath as his assistants. 2014-2015 Shaun, Dave and Phil have been joined by player Matt Brabury on the coaching side. Matt having to finish playing due to injury

Snippets about‌West players Matty Kay One of the catalysts in West's recent change in form has to be midfielder Matty Kay. Kay, now in his second spell at West, is quite possibly one of the most illustrious players to have ever been on our books, notably warranting his own Wikipedia article! Kay's career began in some style when on the 13th November 2005, he turned out for Blackpool F.C then in League 1. As he was only 16 years old at the time, this made him the youngest player to ever play in a league match for Blackpool, a record he still holds today. Although he made no further appearances for Blackpool, Matty went on to have a loan spell at Conference North side Fleetwood town, for whom he made 8 appearances. Following his release from Blackpool, he had a spell at Burscough before joining A.F.C Fylde. He later became renowned in on league circles as a prolific goalscoring midfielder as he had successful spells with the likes of Curzon Ashton (where he scored over 20 goals in 1 season), FC United, Bamber Bridge and Trafford. West fans are likely to agree that Matty is already living up to the reputation he has built in past seasons and will hope his good form continues.
Hayden Buckley-Smith New West keeper Hayden Buckley-Smith has now kept two clean sheets in a row, and the Brookburn Road faithful will no doubt be hoping he can make it 3 on his next appearance. 21 year old Buckley-Smith has had a relatively nomadic career in football, having turned out for Trafford, Runcorn Town, Ashton Athletic, as well as the reserve teams of Curzon Ashton and FC United. Football is not Hayden's only sport though, as in his youth he was a British Muay Thai champion, having won the national under 45kg tournament.

In case of fire or other emergency that requires the clubhouse or ground to be evacuated instructions will be given over the public address system, and we ask that you comply with those instructions immediately. The chanting of racist or obscene chanting is strictly forbidden. Glasses, bottles, gas canisters, knives, darts, tools, flag poles or any other articles likely to cause injury are not permitted into the ground. Alcohol may be purchased and consumed in the bar area only. Children are not allowed in the Club House unless accompanied by an adult. Encroachment onto the playing area is forbidden at all times. Standing is not allowed in front of the seated areas. All forms of transport on the clubs car park is at the owners’ risk.
The club reserves the right to remove any person from the ground who is in breach of these rules or whose presence is a source of danger or annoyance to others.
