Arts Umbrella Vancouver, Surrey Inspiring creativity. For good. Since 1979, Arts Umbrella has made it a mission to provide children and youth with access to high quality arts programs, regardless of experience, level of education, or socio-economic background. Through visual arts, music, theatre, dance, and media arts programs, Arts Umbrella is the go-to centre for arts in Metro Vancouver.

Q&A Why did you start this business? In 1979, Carol Henriquez and Gloria Schwartz wanted to instill in all children a love of the arts. Our founders built a centre that would awaken the potential of young people, inspiring them to become confident, productive, creative, and healthy citizens. What makes your business special? We’re one of the few kids’ arts organizations to teach visual and performing arts in one space, creating a fun, inspiring environment in which young artists thrive. Our practicing artist-instructors not only teach technique, but also self-expression. Tell us a little-known secret about your business. We’re a non-profit. Of the 20,000 young people we reach every year, 80% access our programming at little to no cost—through bursary and scholarship opportunities, as well as free community programs at schools, community centres, and healthcare facilities. 604.681.5268 Twitter: @artsumbrella Instagram: @artsumbrella

Matthew’s House Abbotsford Matthew’s House is a program of Communitas Supportive Care Society. Communitas is a faith-based, registered charity providing care in communities across British Columbia to those living with disabilities. They provide services ranging from 24-hour residential care, to skillsbased day programs, to respite care for families.

Q&A What are your most popular services? Matthew’s House supports families by providing quality care to children who live with complex care needs. Located in Abbotsford, Matthew’s House provides care for up to five children at a time, in a stateof-the-art residence staffed by experienced caregivers. Children between the ages of 4 and 18 stay from two nights to 14 days or longer. Why did you start this service? Matthew’s House is a result of the vision of Doug and Andrea Froese. Complications during his birth left Matthew completely dependent on others for his care. Despite this, he was deeply loved by family and friends. Doug and Andrea sought to honour this legacy of love by creating a home-away-from-home, where families like theirs could bring their child, knowing that they would be safely and lovingly cared for. Matthew’s House opened its doors in November, 2013. What makes your service special? One of the things that makes Matthew’s House such a special place is the way that we include parents. We recognize that parents are the experts on their child’s care. Parents work together with staff to create a care plan for their child’s stay, ensuring that care is specific to their child’s needs. Parents also spend the first night in our beautiful parent’s room, to help their child adjust to the new environment and to help staff learn from their unique knowledge. What is one thing that you’d like to tell readers about your business? Matthew’s House is funded through a blended partnership between government and private donors. Quality care is costly and Matthew’s House relies on donations from events and generous donations from community groups and individuals. 604.850.6608

Foundation Programs & Resources

New Beginnings Maternity Clinic The New Beginnings Maternity Clinic offers maternity care for new immigrants, created to provide comprehensive maternity and primary care for pregnant immigrant women – from conception through to delivery and postpartum – who would otherwise not have access to maternal and child care. Medical Genetics Program This provincial referral centre is committed to providing high-quality genetic health care to residents of BC, while participating in and contributing actively to research and education in the field of Medical Genetics. Midwifery Care Midwives are experts in natural childbirth, providing primary care to women during pregnancy, labour, birth and the postpartum period. Their focus is on the optimum physical, emotional, and psychological wellbeing of both mothers and their newborns. The midwifery model of care promotes the natural progression of labour and birth, and encourages the appropriate use of technology. Milk Bank Breast milk is shown to help premature and critically ill newborns to avoid life threatening infections. The majority of premature babies, however, are unable to receive milk from their own mothers. The BC Women’s Provincial Milk Bank saves lives by providing the families of sick babies with pasteurized donor breast milk. Neonatal Follow-Up Program Babies born too soon, too small, and very sick face a long road to recovery. However, that journey doesn’t end when they leave the Newborn Intensive Care Unit at BC Women’s Hospital. The multidisciplinary team at the Neonatal Follow-Up Program monitors the progress of patients ranging from infants born at 25 weeks (or less) gestation, to full-term babies born with serious complications. By regularly monitoring the children’s growth and development, they can make specific early intervention recommendations and therapy referrals to help address any potential long-term impairments the little patients might develop. Neonatal Intensive Care Unit With 60 tiny beds, the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at BC Women’s Hospital operates the largest, most specialized neonatal care centre in the province. Babies from all over BC come to receive surgical and other specialized care that only BC Women’s Hospital has the expertise and facilities to provide. Newcomer Women’s Health Clinic This clinic provides health services to women who are new arrivals to Canada. Services are provided by a nurse practitioner, and include but are not limited to; cervical cancer screening, breast screening, testing for sexually transmitted infections, contraceptive (birth control) counselling, and general women’s healthcare.

Nurse Practitioner Community Clinics Women living in the inner city can face challenging barriers when it comes to accessing health care, including poverty, isolation, and stigma. The Nurse Practitioner Community Clinics are out in the community to help at-risk women gain better access to primary care, such as screening for cancer, prevention advice, and counselling. BC Women’s Nurse Practitioners provide a primary care clinic at Vancouver Women’s Health Collective headquarters near Hastings and Main. Oak Tree Clinic The Oak Tree Clinic cares for HIV-infected women, pregnant women, and their partners and children. Their pioneering HIV/AIDS treatment for HIV+ pregnant women has resulted in BC having the lowest motherto-baby HIV transmission rates in Canada - almost zero! Pelvic Pain + Endometriosis Clinic Pelvic pain and endometriosis affects approximately 500,000 Canadian women. This centre’s mission is to alleviate the suffering of these women by addressing the unique complexities associated with these conditions and applying a multidisciplinary approach to treatment. Recurrent Pregnancy Loss Clinic Miscarriage is the loss of a pregnancy before 20 weeks gestation. This occurs in 15-20% of all recognized pregnancies. This clinic is designed to help women and their partners who have experienced recurrent pregnancy loss. Recurrent pregnancy loss is when a woman experiences two or more consecutive miscarriages. Women who have experienced a single late miscarriage (greater than 10 weeks gestational age) will also be seen. The clinic consists of a team of health care professionals, including doctors, nurses, ultrasound technologists, and counsellors who provide support throughout the investigation and treatment process. Research at BC Women’s Hospital BC Women’s Hospital supports research to advance knowledge and care for women, newborns and their families, both locally and globally. Sexual Assault Service Providing compassionate, individualized care to youth and adults - male, female, or transgendered, who are 13 years of age or older and who have experienced sexual assault within the last 7 days, the service that is offered is confidential and free of charge.
