Legion in need of building materials, volunteer support ‘There’s no contingency fund for an aging building’: president Jessica Cunha

The West Carleton Legion building is in need of a number of major and minor repairs, but with no contingency fund in place, the executive is appealing to the public for help in the way of building materials and volunteer support. A handful of fixes have already been completed, such as a new door onto the patio and the rehabilitation of a storage shed in the back, but the list of needed repairs keeps growing. “There’s no contingency fund for an aging building,” said Branch 616 President Kathryn Scott. “We have had, over the past two years, major failures in the electrical and plumbing system.” There are leaks in the ceiling that need to be repaired, washrooms that need upgrading, and flooring that needs replacing. “We’ve cleaned up a lot of things thanks to the work of volunteers and donations,” said member John Woodbeck. “It’s materials we could use.” Insulation is needed so that a proper office can be created, as is siding to replace cracked pieces, and industrial-grade shelving for stor-

age. Fencing materials and a pressure tank, along with matching light fixtures, mouldings, baseboard, trim, and countertops are some of the other needed building supplies to help rehabilitate the building. Woodbeck said he will pick up any donated items and requested nothing be dropped off at the Legion. The goal is to boost community use of the various spaces available in the building while making the Legion “an intimate choice for functions in West Carleton,” said Scott. “We encourage user groups to think of us.” COMMUNITY INPUT

What a lot of people may not know is that they don’t need to be a member to visit the Legion and members don’t have to have military service to join, said Scott. “Our branch, we are an open facility. Anybody can come here at any time,” she said. “Our membership is still good, a strong membership, but we’re down from our peak. We’re trying to bring in new patrons.” The Legion supports a number of community initiatives, charities and groups, offers volunteer hours for high school students, and hosts various events every week including TGIF dinners on Fridays. “We are busy but not quite where we want to be,” said Scott. Scott said she’s also looking for community

The

Legion also has a large basement, which if fixed up is another space available for use, she said. “I’m doing this job so we can, at the end of the day, continue our outreach in the community that we’ve been supporting – and supporting veterans in their needs,” said Scott.
