JUDY MAKLIN/SUBMITTED

This John Mlacak painting, Autumn Splendour, is being auctioned as a fundraiser for the Friends of Huntley Highlands.

Art displays, nature walks, family activities and music in the Carp Hills The Friends of Huntley Highlands are inviting the community to ‘Celebrate the Hills’ in September on a 50acre private property in the Carp Hills near the village of Carp. Surrounded by an old forest with rocky outcrops of rugged Canadian Shield, participants can enjoy many activities, explore nature trails, and climb to an exceptional view overlooking the Carp River valley. An art show and sale, guided and self-guided nature walks, music, refreshments, and children’s activities are planned for the event to be held Sunday, Sept. 13 from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at 150 Donald B. Munro Dr. Celebrate the Hills is part of the fundraising efforts of the Friends of Huntley Highlands to help protect the Carp Hills, a scenic and ecologically important wilderness area. These hills comprise the only expression in the city of Ottawa of the billion-year-old Canadian Shield, the oldest rock on earth and a Canadian icon worldwide that inspired the famous landscapes of the Group of Seven. The Carp Hills are also acknowledged by the city of Ottawa as one of its most important natural features and by the province of Ontario as an Area of Natural and Scientific Interest. Dr. Owen Clarkin will lead nature walks along paths in the forest and up onto the Carp

Hills ridge. Dr. Clarkin is the conservation committee chair of the Ottawa Field-Naturalists, and is well known for his expert knowledge of trees. The Friends of Huntley Highlands are excited to welcome him back to explain the special ecology of the Carp Hills. The old red oak tree that was the winner of our recent Biggest Tree contest will be just one of the highlights of the nature walks. A call-out has been sent to artists in the region to display their work at this event. All art forms (e.g. paintings, photographs, sculptures) are welcome. The art on display will be inspired by nature and depict the landscape of the Carp Hills, the area the group is working to preserve: hardwood and coniferous forests, wetland and rocky outcrop vegetation, spectacular igneous and sedimentary (including glacial) geology, and wildlife, including species at risk. A marketplace table will be selling small or donated items such as pins, cards, etc. Participating artists will also have an exceptional opportunity to attend a ‘Plein Air’ day on Monday, Aug. 17, when they can visit the site to sketch, take photos and work on their art. Interested artists will need to reserve a space ASAP. Please see the website for more information and an application form: huntleyhighlands.com.

PAINTING DONATED

The Friends of Huntley Highlands are thrilled to receive the generous donation of a beautiful oil painting by John Mlacak. Mlacek was a renowned Canadian artist: his forte was painting en plein air and capturing the landscape in bold, vibrant colours. Autumn Splendour / Splendeur d’Automne is an original oil painting that depicts one of his favourite subjects: the countryside of March and Huntley townships, which contain the Carp Hills. In donating this painting to the Friends of Huntley Highlands, his widow, Beth Mlacak, explained that John was particularly fond of scenes with Canadian Shield rocky outcrops, the brilliant shades of fall, and a light dusting of snow. Judy Makin, organizer of Celebrate the Hills event, recalls that her last conversation with John Mlacak was regarding the Carp Hills and the initiatives being planned by the Friends of Huntley Highlands to preserve the land for future generations. “We are sincerely grateful that the proceeds from this painting will be used to protect this area that he held very close to his heart,” she said. The painting will be auctioned online as a fundraiser for the Friends of Huntley Highlands. It will be on display at its information booth at the Carp Market on Saturday, Aug. 15. Details regarding the auction will be available at that time, and will be posted on the website huntleyhighlands. com.
