EMC sports – The countdown is on for the 2012 World Broomball Championships. With a little over three months until the best broomballers in the world showcase their skills in the Ottawa Valley, members of the Arnprior organizing committee unveiled the event logo in the ice at the Nick Smith Centre last week. The Nick Smith Centre is a major host venue for the Oct. 29 to Nov. 3 event, hosting games as well as the finals. Other host venues include the Almonte and District Community Centre, the Stewart Community Centre in Pakenham, Neelin Street Community Centre in Carleton Place and Beckwith Recreation Complex. BIG EVENT

Organizers are hoping 64 teams, representing 14 coun-

tries, will participate in the event. As of July 15, the official event indicated there were 56 team registered. The official host committee chair is George Brown, a resident of Carleton Place known throughout the Valley as ‘Mr. Broomball’. Brown has been hosting tournaments for more than 35 years and is also the VP tech of Broomball Canada. With all the players and coaches expected in the area for this momentous sporting event, volunteers are needed. “We could use about 200 volunteers,” said local committee member and Arnprior director of recreation Glenn Arthur. “We are looking at possibly 24 games per day.” Those interested in volunteering for event should visit www.2012broomball.ca. Volunteer duties will range from a wide array of activities and skills and organizers will do their best to accommodate individuals in an area they are most interested in. Theresa Fritz
