Deans forced to down silo Disastrous day for sixth-generation farm NEVIL HUNT nevil.hunt@metroland.com

GALETTA’S GAME Galetta is a force on the lawn bowling scene. Check out how well the club did this season outside the region. 13

The Dean family may have suffered its worst day in six generations of farming this week. On Monday morning, someone noticed the Galetta dairy farm’s 24-metre silo – full of corn silage – was leaning. The family evacuated 65 milking cows from the dairy barn below and some equipment was saved, but the silo was tilted too far to save. Bill and Helen Dean’s property, Fairburn Farms, is located on Highway 17, just north of Galetta Side Road. The silo, which was full to

within about four metres of the top, leaned further as the day went on and Bill had no choice but to topple the heavy structure because of the safety hazard. “Most of the milking equipment will be lost,” said 14-yearold Alexander Dean, one of Bill and Helen’s sons. “The hay and straw (inside the barn) will be lost.” When hydro power was cut to the barn during the morning, the family also lost the weekend’s milk, which was in a storage tank that requires constant refrigeration. Saturday’s commissioning party of the Parish of Huntley St. James in Carp was a chance for parishioners to pat themselves on the back for a job well done and express their appreciation for a generous Trillium grant that helped make parish hall renovations a reality. Rev. Mark Whittall joined guests that included CarletonMississippi Mills MPP Norm Sterling; Ward 5 Coun. Eli ElChantiry; David Selzer, Executive Archdeacon of the Anglican Diocese of Ottawa; and Glenn Arthur, Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) representative

The parish hall is now equipped with a new wheel chair accessible washroom, automatic doors, and an elevator capable of accommodating both wheelchair users as well as those using scooters. Parishioner Jean Green was the ceremonial first user of the elevator and she couldn’t be happier with the facility. “This is just fantastic,” said Green, who, having had hip and knee replacement surgeries, is thrilled with the increased accessibility. Project manager Brenda Lobb praised all involved, including contractor Doug Rivington. See ‘CHURCH’ page 3

The silo finally came down after a third attempt. The corn dust billowed from the sides and wafted over the Galetta farmland as family and friends gathered upwind to survey the damage.

Silo crashes down on dairy barn, but silage may be salvageable Continued from front It took three attempts to bring down the silo, including two tries to pull it down with steel cables and heavy equipment. The third and successful attempt involved cutting some of the steel bands that held together the cement slabs that formed the silo’s walls.

The silo came down shortly after 4 p.m., destroying roughly half of the L-shaped dairy barn. Video of the fall is online at www.yourottawaregion. com/videozone Neighbours did all they could to help, lending the Deans’ equipment and trailers to transport their cows. Other farmers took in the Deans’ dairy cows,

attach steel cables to the silo when some other companies declined the risky job. The Deans may be able to salvage some of the silage, depending on how

much cement and cement dust has been mixed into the corn. The corn was expected to provide feed for the dairy herd through the winter. The silo was believed to be built in the 1980s and was filled with corn over the past three weeks. The barn is much older, dating back six generations. The family will now

have to clean the silage or purchase feed for the winter. The Deans will also need to rebuild the barn and purchase new milking and silage equipment, which could mean a new silo, a bagger or a new storage building. The Deans have been active volunteers in the Galetta Community Association for many years.

Harbour Store owner Kai Zhang received a public apology from Canada Post on Sept. 30, but has no guarantee her shop will remain a Canada Post outlet. “If we have treated you unfairly in any way, then I apologize on behalf of everyone at Canada Post,â€? said Jon Hamilton, a communications manager with the Crown corporation. The apology was delivered in front of more than 140 people at the Fitzroy Harbour Community Centre. Hamilton handled questions and criticism over Canada Post’s decision to hold a job contest to seek a new postmistress for Fitzroy Harbour while Zhang is ready and willing to take on the title. Hamilton said the Commissioner of OfďŹ cial Languages requires all postmasters and postmistresses in the National Capital Region to be bilingual, although existing staff may not be

bilingual and are grandfathered. Zhang said after the meeting that she has passed a French test administered by the University of Ottawa. She has applied for the postmistress position and will likely interview for the job soon. During a speech to the crowd, she was emotional when thanking residents for their support. “Too much people come here for me. You make me (feel at) home. Thank you, she said before shedding a few tears. Hamilton said that all applicants for the posting will be considered and he hopes a candidate – possibly Zhang – will be accepted. He wouldn’t speculate on the possibility that no one will be found for the job. Some people at the meeting suggested postal service would be moved to Kinburn, forcing Harbour residents to travel there to receive or mail packages. Hamilton said that if no Fitzroy location is found suitable for

a post ofďŹ ce, he will return to discuss the next steps with the community. Following the meeting, Fitzroy Harbour Community Association president Karen Taylor said Zhang deserved the

postmistress position. “Canada Post says they’re doing everything they can to maintain service here but really they haven’t, Taylor said. Zhang said she still wants the

position, in part because the postal outlet creates customer trafďŹ c that supports other parts of her business. “In my heart I still trust Canada Post,â€? she said.

Dance to be tribute to ailing musician JOHN CARTER john.carter@metroland.com

A West Carleton entertainer is urging the community to come together to support a musician who has helped many others in the past. Al Cockerell and a number of musical friends are rallying in support of Chris Dyke and his family. Dyke, a member of the band Unattended Children and a Constance Bay resident, suffered an aneurysm Oct. 1 and is ďŹ ghting for his life in the Ottawa General Hospital. Unattended Children was supposed to play at a Halloween dance at the Constance Bay Communi-

ty Centre Oct. 23. . Instead of cancelling, Cockerell and other musicians, particularly Whiskey Mike, have jumped into the breach and not only will play, but turn the dance into a tribute to Dyke. “He donated a lot of time to the community, said Cockerell. “Now it’s time for the community to help him and his family. We want to sell out (the dance). Dyke, who is 54, has a wife, Paulette, and a son, Phillip. Cockerell said proceeds from the dance, which will include a set of Dyke’s songs, will be turned over to his family. The dance will start at 9:30 p.m., following the 7 p.m. showing of the cult movie.

“It was a team effort,â€? said Lobb. This accessibility project was made possible through fundraising events, which included two very successful dances with ‘rocking’ doctors, The Startools, as well as the $41,500 grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation. “I am pleased to see the Ontario Trillium Foundation is once again stepping up to the plate in our community,â€? said MPP Norm Sterling. “The parish hall has long been a focal point in this community and making it accessible will ensure that everyone will be able to participate in the wide variety of events that take place there.â€? “This OTF grant has been crucial in allowing us to complete our accessibility project,â€? said Ted Barnicoat, Warden and member of the accessibility project volunteer team. “All in the community who have difďŹ culty

Where is Jim Watson on the Carp Dump? On June 23, 2010, I wrote to mayoral candidate Jim Watson asking him to state his position on the expansion of the Carp Dump. It is important for my constituents in the Stittsville area and citizens throughout Ottawa for that matter to know if Jim Watson supports the expansion of the dump or not. Not only has there been no reply to my letter as of yet, Mr. Watson has repeatedly ignored my inquiries by fax and phone as to where the reply is; four months after the fact.

rience in Brampton and the 500 communities in Europe where incinerators are used to burn garbage. Robertson said that these waste-to-energy plants or incinerators would be viable economically if the rate for the electricity produced was increased from the current 6.5 cents per kilowatt hour to 14 cents per kilowatt hour and if the steam that is produced as well is used to heat facilities, either industrial buildings or, in the case of Ottawa, government buildings. He said that increasing the money paid for generating energy from waste would be what the provincial government should

Everyone in the city of Ottawa creates garbage. Only a fraction of the population of the city uses public transit. Yet, most election talk this fall is about light rail and a downtown tunnel. To Peter Robertson, a former Brampton mayor and veteran municipal politician, this scenario is out of whack. There should be much more conversation about waste disposal and the new technologies that create energy from waste. Speaking at an information meeting on energy from waste technologies hosted by the Carleton Landowners Association on Sept. 30 at the Carp Agricultural Hall, and attended by about 175 people, Robertson said that a municipal government should refuse to accept the old way of burying garbage in the ground. Waste has value, he said, and municipal politicians are in control of it. He urged the municipality to build its own energy-from-waste plant, saying that if the city can build a tunnel and light rail transit system, it surely can find $70 million for a waste-to-energy plant. He knows of what he speaks because the City of Brampton built a waste to energy incinerator 17 years ago and it has been operating ever since with its emissions never exceeding Ministry of the Environment standards. Incinerators are not bad, he said, noting the 17 years of expe-

Continued from Page 4 Robertson was the outspoken star of the information meeting, which also saw representatives of four companies involved with waste and energy production make presentations. Remi Godin, gas operations manager for Waste Management, told about the firm’s landfill gas to energy projects including the newly opened facility at the Carp Road landfill site. This technology uses methane gas produced by a landfill and converts it into electricity by using the landfill gas to run giant engines that produce the electricity which is then sold to the grid. Alisdair McLean of Plasco Energy Group explained the firm’s plasma gasification technology, which is now being

used at a commercial scale demonstration facility at the city’s Trail Road landfill site. The Plasco process converts garbage into a gas that is then fed into engines to produce electricity. He said that this process allows for the production of more electricity per tonne of waste than just using landfill gas to power an engine. The Plasco process converts the solid waste to gas by heating the garbage up, not enough to burn but to become a gas. Plasco Energy Group will be building a plant using its process in Red Deer, Alta., with 2012 as the operating date. The firm also has prospects in California, the United Kingdom, Poland and China. Robert Graves, representing TBU Stubenvoll, told about the Austrian firm

that designs waste-to-energy across Europe.

plants

EUROPEAN SOLUTION “It’s about time Canada woke up and smelled the garbage,” Graves, a 30-year resident of Goulbourn, told the gathering in explaining that the Stubenvoll firm has built waste to energy plants in 17 countries. He said that waste has been treated in a thermal way since 1961, with refinements happening in the time since then. He said that in Europe, it is against the law to dispose of waste that has not been thermally treated. He said that burning garbage to create energy eliminates the greenhouse gases, leachate pollution, odour and visual impact of landfill sites.

Nick Vandergraft, a spokesperson for Northern Watertek, which champions the Vortex energy from waste technology, said that Canadians have to find a better way to deal with waste and move away from the model of simply digging holes in the ground and putting in garbage. He said that the Vortex process is proven technology that works, with no atmospheric discharge, the creation of “little black pebbles” which can be used as aggregate and 98 percent destruction of garbage, with electricity or heat produced. The information meeting wound up with a question and answer session, with Robertson and the four presenters serving as the response panel, with Tom Black of the Carleton Landowners Association as the moderator.

Primary students at Stonecrest Elementary School learned about butterflies during September, and on Oct. 1, they said goodbye to the monarchs they had watched grow from caterpillars, right through the pupae stage. Students gathered outside the school to wish the butterflies well on their way to the insect’s winter home in Mexico. WEST CARLETON REVIEW - October 7 2010

EDITORIAL

Walk support appreciated

Voting based on relationships It’s Jim Watson’s race to lose at this point. Maybe it’s time for West Carleton-March voters to ask themselves who among the three candidates would forge the best relationship with him. It is unwise to attempt a prediction at the outcome of an election, especially a mayoral election that is still more than two weeks away. Nevertheless, even a passing glimpse of how the supposed frontrunners handled the campaign speaks volumes. Jim Watson, a professional politician, has run a smooth campaign – complete with plenty of hardworking volunteers led by a man whose energy seems limitless. By contrast, Larry O’Brien, the incumbent, attends some events by himself and seems to lack the swagger he had during the last election. A new Holinshed Research Group poll of 396 people randomly selected from across the city reflects the reality. Watson is leading with 36 per cent; O’Brien is at 17 per cent. While it is true the poll shows 30 per cent of respondents are still undecided, making the race anyone’s to win, it is likely many of those undecided are split between choosing O’Brien or Andrew Haydon. A similar split on the left is not as apparent. So, who should Ward 5 voters pick to sit at the council table under what could well prove to be a left-of-centre mayor? James Parsons is the least likely to get along with Watson. He is decidedly on the right side of the spectrum, and will clash with Watson over issues such as a ring road, which the latter has indicated is not a priority. But perhaps Parsons would prove a counter balance, a desirable outcome for some West Carleton-March voters even if that freezes the ward out of other benefits. Alex Aronec often appears a promising young Liberal, offering largely centrist views but with an optimistic flare. Maybe incumbent Eli ElChantiry, a Liberal supporter with a background in law-and-order experience, is the best bet. However, there can always be a danger in over analyzing one’s decision. After all, what if the Progressive Conservatives – who also lead in the polls – form the next government. Would it be wise to have a former Liberal as Ottawa’s mayor?

An open letter to all supporters: On behalf of L’Arche Arnprior, I would like to thank you for your valuable and generous support in making our third annual L’Arche Arnprior Fun Run/Walk a success. The Fun Run attracted 51 participants and 15 volunteers. The event provided a great opportunity for L’Arche Arnprior to once again enhance our visibility in the community, as well as to raise funds to assist the community of L’Arche Haiti. All those who participated enjoyed the morning as well as the complimentary barbecue afterwards. The weather even cooperated with the rain holding off until we were just about finished and we were pleased that the event was covered by our local media. We greatly appreciate your support and look forward to working with you in the coming years. Andy Prince Fun Run/Walk Committee

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Land grant patents offer protection to landowners

To the editor:

Land grant patents documents are instrumental in protecting land owners against the unlawful infringement on their ability to own, use and profit from their private property. The land grant patents are vital in the fight to control overzealous governments and their agencies for two basic reasons. The first is that they spell out in very specific terms what those rights include, and secondly it makes those rights eternal. For those of you who don’t like the monarchy, I would suggest that in this instance it has done us all an unparalleled service. During the reign of Queen Victoria, land grants where issued to immigrants to what was then Upper Canada (modern day Ontario). At that time during the 1820s and ‘30s, settlers were given the rights to the timber, the water on and in the land, and the minerals that may lie within the borders of the granted land.

Established in 1980

The vast majority of land in Ontario is in fact ‘granted land’ with a patent attached. There are modern day examples of cases in law and provincial legislation, where land grant patents are cited and used to defend property rights. So now we have a case decided in favour of land grant patents in the Ontario Supreme Court in 1972, by the Supreme Court of Canada in 1974, as well as a piece of provincial legislation requiring a firm to relinquish their rights under their grant as a condition for compensation. These two cases demonstrate the significance of the land grant patents and more importantly that the province recognizes their ability to prevent well-intentioned but rights-infringing legislation, bylaws or regulations from being enacted and enforced. The upshot is that should this become widely known, radical changes in the way the province does business will have to take place. This will overturn or nullify 25 to 30 pieces of leg-

islation such as the Nutrient Management Act, the Species at Risk Act, and the Clean Water Act. It will also effectively neuter organizations like conservation authorities as well as requiring government departments like the Ministry of Natural Resources as well as the Ministry of the Environment to respect the rights of property owners as they should have done all along. If you own a piece of land anywhere within the province of Ontario, in the country or within city limits, you need to do two things. First, join your nearest landowners association, and second obtain your land grant patent from the Ministry of Natural Resources land grant registry in Peterborough. The fee for acquiring the land grant patent will range between $50 to 200 for a certified copy. To acquire your patent, you can call 705-755-2193.

Homeowners helping homeowners in Woodlawn derek.dunn@metroland.com

It’s been all the talk of Woodlawn and beyond the last few weeks: a new hardware store. “It’s amazing how excited the community seems to be,” said James Roy, who is anything but complaining about the attention garnered by his Deka Home Building Centre – Woodlawn. Roy, who lives in Dunrobin and owns the Deka Home Hardware-Carp, converted the Pal Lumber Yard a few weeks ago. A grand opening celebration is set for Oct. 21 to 23, complete with grand opening flyer sale and a barbecue draw. A fully-Canadian owned company, Home Hardware stores are different from Rona, Home Depot and others in that they are dealer-owned and offer slight variations. Dealers often set up to serve a rural base where they can customize their stores to reflect the community’s needs while offering competitive pricing since they do not have to pay the large urban overhead costs. Some stores specialize in lumber, others in renovations, others in hardware and still others in furniture and appliances. Roy and his store manager,

Mike Burrill, who is building a home for his young family in Dunrobin, have turned to the community for direction on which items to bring in. “We’re going to try and meet the community’s needs,” Roy said. “Right now we have a broad array. But we are asking people, ‘It’s your store. What do you want to see here?’” And if they want to see a lot, there’s room to grow. The building is 3,000 square feet, with 2,000 square feet of storage and another three acres in back for expansion. Roy is optimistic, saying the Carp location weathered last year’s economic downturn well. ON COMMERCIALS? Roy chuckled when asked if Carp or Woodlawn will feature in one of the ‘homeowners helping homeowners’ television commercials. He said all owners are free to participate in the filming, which takes place at the annual meeting in St. Jacobs. He hopes to have time this year to join in. As for jobs, the new store has hired six or seven employees – but expects 10 or more when all is in place.

Neighbourhood Watch really works: police CONST. PETER JEON Ottawa Police Service

ROAD RAGE NEIGHBORS Take a deep breathe and check to see if you recognize the other driver before you fly off in a fit of road rage. Better still, take a deep breathe and count to three because the driver that just cut you off might be your boss, a friend, or a neighbor? No doubt, the realization after the fact can be more uncomfortable, to say the least, than counting to three and controlling your

CLOSE CALL Sept. 26 on Fifth Line Road, West Carleton: While rounding a bend onto Kerwin Road from Fifth Line, a driver was forced to swerve onto the shoulder in order to avoid a collision with an oncoming vehicle. The driver said the vehicle was travelling very fast when it crossed into her lane. As the driver swerved and hit the right shoulder, she lost control of her vehicle and ended up spinning across the road, sliding into a ditch and coming to rest against a tree. Unaware of what had just transpired, the oncoming vehicle left the scene.

and 8 a.m. Sept. 24. The 44 12” x 8” steel plates with the name ‘CNR’ etched on each plate were left out in the open next to the railway tracks at Diamondview Road and Thomas A. Dolan Parkway. It is believed the steel plates were sold off as scrap metal. Sept. 28 in the 2500 block of Carp Road, West Carleton: Sometime between 6 p.m. Sept. 24 and 6 a.m. Sept. 26, a commercial van was broken into by an unidentified suspect(s). The thieves broke into the locked van by forcing open a small window on the driver’s side and unlocking the door. Two Sthil chain saws were reported stolen. Sept. 29 on Bayview Drive, Constance Bay: A 1979 Thundercraft speedboat was discovered miss-

ing by its owner on Wednesday, Sept. 29 at around 6 p.m. The owner said his boat was last seen chained and anchored to his dock in Constance Bay Saturday, Sept. 25 at around 2 p.m. The boat was described as having an inboard MerCruiser motor and a registration number of 32E27285.

BREAK-IN Sept. 24 on Galetta Side Road, Dirleton: Sometime between 9 and 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 24, known suspects broke into a home on Galetta Side Road by forcing open a kitchen window and stealing jewelry and electronic items. Two dogs left inside the house while the complainant was at work were unharmed by the suspects. Thanks to a quickthinking Neighborhood Watch co-ordinator, police were able to apprehend and charge two suspects for the break-in.

POT BUST Sept. 24 on Falldown Lane, Carp Village: Two young males were arrested and turned over to their parents after a small quantity of marijuana was found in their possessions. When officers approached the nervous looking males and spotted a cannabis pipe lying at their feet, they asked the males if they had any “weed” on them. In response, each male handed over a small bag of Mary Jane to the officers. RAIL, SAW THEFTS Sept. 24 on Diamondview Road, West Carleton: A complainant called the OPS call centre to report the theft of about $150 worth of railway tie plates. The theft occurred sometime between the 9 a.m. Sept. 22

The Ottawa Police Service thanks the Grierson Lane Neighborhood Watch co-ordinator for her timely assistance in solving the recent spate of break-ins in the West Carleton area. Because of her knowledge about the recent B&E activities in the area and her attentiveness to suspicious and unusual behavior, she was able to quickly put two and two together to deduce that what was actually taking place before her very eyes was an interlude to an attempted B&E. On Aug. 10, a break-in was reported on John Shaw Road. During the investigation, a neighbor reported observing a black fourdoor car parked at the end of a driveway with a lone female occupant. On speaking with the female, the neighbor was told that she was waiting to view a rental house further down the road. On Sept. 13, a homeowner on Murphy Side Road reported an attempted break-in. The male and female suspects reportedly rang the doorbell numerous times before attempting to pry open the door. As a result of the co-ordinator’s vigilance and timely call to police, shortly before noon on Friday, Sept. 24, the Ottawa Police Service arrested and charged two suspects for a residential break-in earlier that morning on Galetta Side Road. Charged with break and enter into a place, possession of breakin instruments, and possession of property obtained by crime were a 39-year-old Ottawa woman and a 33-year-old Metcalfe man. The pair were taken into custody and were scheduled to appear in court Oct. 4 and 5 respectively. “Remember, you are the eyes and ears in the community. Start communicating with your neighbors and become familiar with the goings-on in your community.” For more information on how to start up a Neighborhood watch in your area or to become a Neighborhood Watch member, contact the West Carleton CPC at 613-2361222, ext. 2982.

emotional impulses. Shortly after 5 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 24, a complainant called police to report a road rage incident. The woman reported a male in a grey car cut her off on Richmond Road and then followed her home. He then yelled at her and gave her the finger. When police spoke to both drivers about the road rage incident, they realized they were next door neighbors. Oops.

fungal “straws” provide them with water and nutrients, often forming material-gathering networks that span hundreds of thousands of kilometres per tree. Other fungi play essential roles in decomposition and many of these can now be seen fruiting atop old logs and trees. My favourite is the colourful little bracket fungi Turkey Tails. Their bright colour bands and fan-shape make it easy to see how that name arose. On occasion entire logs are clothed with these lovely fungi. Bracket fungi get their name from

LIVER, KIDNEY DAMAGE Those who mistakenly eat Amanitas face severe consequences; not only is liver and kidney damage possible, the survival rate is less than 50 per cent. Mushrooms are an important and beautiful part of our local landscape. Mushrooms of Ontario and Eastern Canada by George Barron is an excellent guide to this group. All bracket fungus are important decomposers of wood. Rainy weather is conducive with mass emergences of Jelly Fungi. While some, such as Witch’s Butter, are bright yellow, others are white. All are relatively small and look like chunks of jelly splashed onto logs. While many mushrooms sport typical mushroom shapes and drab colours, a few are noteworthy for their stunning appearances. As you well know, we had a very wet late summer. Rain seemed to fall every second day, oft times in near record quantity. Although conditions were a bit unpleasant for many outdoor activities, the prolific amount of water had one very positive effect. It provided perfect conditions for one group of organisms. All one has to do is take a stroll through local habitats to see the prolific show of mushrooms that is here courtesy of the weather. When you see a mushroom, you are not seeing the entire organism. Instead you are seeing a stone on the tip of an iceberg for beneath the soil lies the rest of the gigantic organism, one that can span dozens or even hundreds or thousands of kilometres. Hidden from view are the cylindrical fungal threads called hyphae. Many hyphae are attached to tree roots. Without these fungal associates trees simply could not live for these

Last week the Galetta Lawn Bowling Club closed the green for the winter after a very successful season of competition. Outgoing president, Morgan Robinson, acknowledged and congratulated the competitive success of the club’s members at the district, provincial and national levels as follows: Playing respectively in the men’s and ladies’ Fours, David and Sandra Jefferies represented Ontario in the Canadian Championships in Edmonton. After taking the Ontario silver medal, the men’s team tied for third at the national level. The ladies’ team won provincial gold and played for Ontario at the nationals. Grant Fletcher and John Bennett bowling in the senior men’s triples won District 16 and represented the district at the pro-

vincial finals. In the men’s pairs, Grant Fletcher and a player from the Elmdale Club won the district and continued on to the provincial finals. Kin Dillane, John Stevenson and Andy Tait won the District 16 playdowns in the novice men’s triples and then continued on to represent the district in the Ontario finals. The Governor-General’s competition is held annually between representative teams from Quebec and Ontario. Grant Fletcher, Ted Tozer, Kin Dillane and Daryle Carmichael won the right to represent Ontario at this year’s tournament in Smiths Falls. Robinson also noted that individual teams did extremely well in the in-club tournaments and those sponsored by other District 16 clubs.

Robinson concluded that she was pleased to witness the increase in membership this past year. She stressed that the club must look to encouraging youth to join its ranks as they will be the future of the game. The Galetta Lawn Bowling Club is located in the Galetta Community Centre. Its members come from the communities of Arnprior, Pakenham, Carp, Kinburn, Woodlawn, Dunrobin, Kanata and Ottawa. The spring 2011 season will open at the Club on May 17, at 3 p.m. All parties interested in trying out the game are encouraged to join us for a warm up game and a super pot luck dinner on that date. Looking forward to the library DIANA FISHER The Accidental Farmwife

I drove past the new library construction and thought of how many hours I have spent in libraries over the years. Life is so busy now that my recreational reading has been reduced to a few minutes a day before bed unless I’m on vacation, but there have been times in my life when I positively devoured books. We only had two channels on the TV when I was growing up, so books were important. I was a regular customer at the public library, where I borrowed as many books as I could carry each week. My favourite authors were Beverly Cleary, Roald Dahl and Carolyn Keene. (I just discovered, after Googling “who wrote the Nancy Drew series?” that it was actually a bunch of people writing under the collective name of Carolyn Keene. That boggles the mind.) Books entrusted to my safekeeping

Inside this week’s West Carleton Review

were always in some sort of danger, unfortunately. I read while walking home after school. My favourite place to read was up a tree. Many times a book fell out of my shoulder bag during the climb, landing in a pile of damp leaves – or worse. I used to read during my bath too, until that fateful evening when a very large hardcover copy of The Story Girl slipped through the bubbles into the water. Hangin’ out in the public library was one of my favourite pastimes when I was young. A few decades later, the library was a weekly destination when I was raising young children of my own. It provided much more than books to a young mother desperate to get out of the house. When I lived in Asia, I scooped up the new English bestsellers as soon as they arrived on the display table before they could disappear. I’m looking forward to checking out (get it? I punned ;) our new library and dusting off my old borrower’s card.

Curves – Linda Davies, owner Ladies Health and Fitness Franchise

Linda Davies

236 Madawaska Blvd. Arnprior

613-623-5454 curves.com

Linda, began in the fitness industry as a part time certified instructor, leading lunch time classes of all levels and evening classes for continuing education programs. Linda always had a desire at time of retirement, to volunteer her strength to help seniors become more active. Understanding that life expectance was increasing with the aid of medical cures and advanced technology it was clear that living longer didn’t mean living healthier. With the increase in obesity and diabetes type 2, at a much earlier age, getting people fit has become a personal goal of Linda’s. With this passion for the fitness industry and her belief in physical exercise being extremely import to maintain a, long and healthy lasting life style she was excited to establish the Arnprior Curves franchise in April 2002. Curves is designed with women in mind, this fun, fast and effective way to get into shape in just 30 minutes, 3x a week combines strength training and cardio exercise together to protect muscles, increase metabolism and burn fat. With welcoming and supportive staff, they are able to keep you motivated while having fun. Curves uses safe, simple hydraulic resistance rather then complicated machines or weights, add the cardio exercise and the result is a routine that’s simple to start effective enough to get fast results and challenging enough to stick to. Call or drop in for a quick figure assessment, tour of the bright and clean facility and find out the benefits Curves can have for you.

is co-owner of in Arnprior. She and her husband Eric have owned this business for 15 years. This year marks 50 years in business. They are now in the process of creating a conference/ business meeting room in their office building. It is their hope to rent the conference room out to local businesses and organizations needing a location to host meetings and business gatherings.

Lorne’s Electric

As an Examiner/Consultant, Elizabeth Nesbitt has over 35 years experience in various forms of education including classroom teacher, specialist teacher of the blind/visually impaired, and assessment counselor for the Renfrew County District School Board. Since retiring in June 2001, Elizabeth has spent the past eight years working with Dr. Henry Venema, Registered Psychologist, completing comprehensive Psycho-Educational Assessments for the identification of learning difficulties and/or disabilities. A Psycho-Educational evaluation consists of a battery of tests that will provide information on an individual’s (Ages 4-Adult) overall abilities (IQ), particularly learning style, information processing abilities, and academic skills. Information processing refers to how one’s brain takes in, uses, stores, retrieves, and expresses information. Affected learning areas may be one or a combination of the following: basic reading skills, reading comprehension, math calculation, math reasoning, written and/or oral expression, and listening comprehension. It is important to note that not all learning disabled students are alike but many do experience similar processing and learning difficulties. Extended health care plan may help cover a portion of applicable fees.

They invite interested parties to call for rental details about this new facility.

The Angels gathered near your bed so very close to you. For they knew the pain and suffering that you were going through. I thought about so many things, as I held tightly to your hand. Oh, how I wished that you were strong and happy once again. But your eyes were looking homeward to that place beyond the sky. Where Jesus held His outstretched arms, it was time to say goodbye. I struggled with my selfish thoughts, for I wanted you to stay. So we could walk and talk again, like we didjust yesterday. But Jesus knew the answer, and I knew He loved you so. So I gave to you life’s greatest gift, the gift of letting go.

October 7 2010 - WEST CARLETON REVIEW

The Rural Root Theatre Company is gearing up for the Oct. 13 to 16 production of White Sheep of the Family and volunteers were at the Carp Farmers Market Saturday to spread the word about the play. Assistant stage manager Carolyn Walsh, right, and volunteer Gloria Young, explain the play is being held at the Constance and Buckham’s Bay Community Centre. Directed by Roy Ballantine, White Sheep of the Family is set in the 1950s in London. A family of well-to-do crooks are shocked when their son quits the life and goes straight after meeting a girl. But is she what she appears to be? For information or tickets, call 613-832-1070 or visit www.ruralroot.org/.
