INSPIRING WAGNER

Asher Fisch conductor

The mid nineteenth-century was a time of great social and artistic upheaval, and the world of music was not immune to the forces of change. Leading composers such as Liszt and Schumann experimented with new genres, tonalities and forms, and their music was imbued with the poetic and romantic fervour of the time. Building upon Liszt's early experimentation with chromatic harmony, and, like Schumann, seeking to create a new vision of German opera, Wagner revolutionised music with his audacious new harmonies, gargantuan orchestras and grandiose dramas. In the second half of this concert, Asher Fisch and the Orchestra take us on an exhilarating journey through the pinnacle of Wagner’s operatic ambition – his four-opera Ring Cycle. Through five orchestral extracts from the Ring, they showcase Wagner’s immense artistic achievement and his mastery of orchestral writing. Pre-concert Talk with Sally Kester

Asher Fisch and WASO’s Wagner journey continues in 2018 with two performances of Tristan und Isolde at Perth Concert Hall. These performances will be the centrepiece of WASO’s 90th anniversary celebrations.

WAGNER’S WORLD

Asher Fisch conductor Shane Lowrencev bass-baritone

Everything that was written after Wagner’s great opera Tristan was, in some way, influenced by it. Leonard Bernstein called Tristan “the central work of all music history”, and the Prelude and Liebestod contains some of the most achingly beautiful music ever composed. Following arias from Die Walküre and Die Meistersinger sung by acclaimed Australian bass-baritone Shane Lowrencev, Asher Fisch explores Wagner’s musical legacy through the spacious grandeur of Bruckner’s Seventh Symphony (his memorial monument to Wagner) and the overture from Chabrier’s opera Gwendoline. We conclude with Richard Strauss, who drew upon Wagner’s expanded orchestral palette, added his own dash of flamboyant audacity and composed the work that made the then 25-year old a star – the virtuosic orchestral showpiece Don Juan. Sibelius’ multi-faceted, expressive tone poem and Stravinsky’s richly folkloric ballet suite provide lavishly carved bookends to Bartók’s Third Piano Concerto and Debussy's dreamlike and seductive Prelude to the Afternoon of a faun. Making her WASO debut, French pianist Hélène Grimaud is acclaimed for her highly original and deeply passionate approach to music making. To celebrate, Maestro Verbitsky leads WASO and the WASO Chorus in two dramatic Russian masterpieces: Rachmaninov’s massive, Edgar Allan Poe-inspired choral symphony The Bells, and Tchaikovsky’s Byron-inspired Manfred Symphony, in which the hero wanders in the mountains, encounters Alpine fairies, and faces his mortality in an infernal subterranean orgy! *Meet the Artist Vladimir and Nellie Verbitsky Post-concert Saturday night Meet the Artist is supported by Wesfarmers Arts

Asher Fisch conductor (pictured) Karen Gomyo violin

Conceived on a gigantic scale, Mahler’s Sixth is a symphony of extreme expressive intensity, demanding enormous interpretive commitment from both conductor and orchestra. Its legendary hammer blows are moments of raw brutality: theatrically exhilarating but emotionally devastating. Sonically spectacular and vividly imaginative, this is one of Mahler’s most awe-inspiring creations. To open this concert, Japanese-born American violinist Karen Gomyo offers a sophisticated entrée - Mozart’s exquisite Third Violin Concerto. “ Fisch and WASO could not be faulted. The three months that Vaughan Williams studied with Ravel in 1908 were rewarding both personally and professionally. The two became friends and Ravel’s tuition helped Vaughan Williams achieve a more luminous sound and greater textural clarity in his orchestral music. His Fifth Symphony is imbued with the delicate handling of lyricism and orchestral colour evident in his teacher’s Mother Goose ballet. By contrast, musical prodigy SaintSaëns’ stormy, mercurial First Cello Concerto positively erupts with melodic invention.

RACHMANINOV’S 2ND PIANO CONCERTO

FRIDAY 24 NOVEMBER 7.30PM SATURDAY 25 NOVEMBER 7.30PM* Perth Concert Hall RACHMANINOV Piano Concerto No.2 SHOSTAKOVICH Symphony No.10 Asher Fisch conductor Alexander Gavrylyuk piano (pictured)

Rachmaninov’s Second Piano Concerto is a ravishing masterpiece, overflowing with lush, rich melodies that live long in the memory. Alexander Gavrylyuk is acclaimed worldwide for thrilling performances of this ever-popular concerto. The bitter core of Shostakovich’s 1953 Tenth Symphony is its scherzo: a less than flattering portrait of Stalin, who died the same year. This deeply personal symphony journeys through foreboding, anguish and despair before tragedy and repression are finally - and exultantly overcome in the thrilling finale.

“Mr. Qin has… a meltingly beautiful tone, flawless centered intonation and an ironclad technique.” - New York Times

Tchaikovsky revised his Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture in 1880, the same year Bruch penned his Scottish Fantasy. Taiwanese-born violinist Yu-Chien Tseng, winner of the inaugural Singapore Violin Competition in 2015, performs Bruch's perennially popular work. Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony is a joyous whirlwind of sound and rhythm. The brilliant energy of the first movement gives way to a sombre but sublime second, before dashing through the light-hearted third movement and on to a blistering, exhilarating finale.    “Yu-Chien Tseng… The best man won the Singapore International Violin Competition.” - The Straits Times

Inspired by Botticelli’s painting Primavera, Debussy’s early symphonic suite Printemps already shows his predilection for ‘impressionist’ harmonies. By contrast, Richard Strauss’ Second Horn Concerto blazes with late-style brilliance. Elgar himself described his Second Symphony as “the passionate pilgrimage of the soul”. Its aching tenderness and melancholy is typically Elgarian, but the astonishing orchestral colours, audacious design and sheer power are breath-taking and make it one of the twentieth-century’s greatest symphonies. “Stefan Dohr… the king of his instrument.” New York Chronicle *Meet the Artist Stefan Dohr

Lortie performs with elegant subtlety, sophistication and spontaneity - perfect qualities for Chopin’s lyrical First Piano Concerto. Asher Fisch conductor Jayson Gillham piano (pictured)

Christopher Dragon conductor Karin Schaupp guitar (pictured)

Schumann famously praised Schubert’s ‘Great’ C Major Symphony for its “heavenly length”, and it is justly considered Schubert’s greatest symphonic achievement - an astonishing work of driving power and lyrical beauty.

Ravel’s Pavane evokes the courtly world of Renaissance Spain with as much perfumed nostalgia as Rodrigo’s popular guitar concerto does. Rodrigo described his glorious concerto as capturing “the fragrance of magnolias, the singing of birds, and the gushing of fountains."

ASHER FISCH CONDUCTS SCHUBERT’S THE GREAT

Australian pianist Jayson Gillham makes his WASO debut with Schumann’s Piano Concerto which was first performed with the composer’s wife Clara as soloist. TCHAIKOVSKY Romeo and Juliet – Fantasy Overture BEETHOVEN Symphony No.7

Perth Concert Hall

Daniel Cohen conductor (pictured)

The Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture was one of Tchaikovsky’s first great works, a magical fantasy piece whose sweeping drama and sublime, passion-drenched melodies has made it one of his most popular works. Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony is a joyous whirlwind of sound and rhythm. The brilliant energy of the first movement gives way to a sombre but sublime second, before dashing through the light-hearted third movement and on to a blistering, exhilarating finale.    “Daniel Cohen was a discovery... he conducted throughout with the golden combination of clarity and expression...” Bachtrack (UK)

STRAVINSKY Violin Concerto
SIBELIUS Symphony No.2 Asher Fisch conductor Laurence Jackson violin (pictured)

Sibelius’ Second Symphony is a stirring masterpiece that evokes the expansive, glacial landscape of the great Finnish master’s homeland. WASO’s Concertmaster Laurence Jackson takes centre stage for a rare Perth performance of Stravinsky’s Violin Concerto, a unique neo-classic gem. “Jackson could not be faulted. A deluge of applause from both audience and Orchestra was warm and protracted - and thoroughly deserved.” - The West Australian 2016 Asher Fisch appears courtesy of Wesfarmers Arts

SIBELIUS En Saga DEBUSSY Prélude à ‘L’après-midi d’un faune’ STRAVINSKY The Firebird – Suite [1945 version]

TCHAIKOVSKY Manfred Symphony

Martyn Brabbins conductor (pictured)

Since his first appearance as guest conductor of WASO in 1987, Russian-born conductor Vladimir Verbitsky has become a much-loved figure in Perth’s musical life. To celebrate, Maestro Verbitsky leads WASO in a performance of Tchaikovsky’s Manfred Symphony. Tchaikovsky’s flair for the dramatic and the epic come to the fore as his Byronic hero wanders in the mountains, encounters Alpine fairies and hunters, and faces his mortality in a subterranean infernal orgy!

Sibelius’ expressive tone poem and Debussy’s languid and impressionistic Prélude prepare the ground for Stravinsky’s richly folkloric ballet suite. British conductor Martyn Brabbins is renowned for his command of late nineteenth and early twentieth-century repertoire and he brings his extraordinary ear for detail and balance to this concert full of stunning orchestral colour and dazzling instrumental virtuosity. “...astonishing clarity and unerring sense of dramatic shape… the performance under Brabbins was in many respects exceptional.” - The Guardian

Vladimir Verbitsky conductor (pictured)

“Technically clean, with balanced sound and impressive in its musical message, Verbitsky offered all of himself to the audience.” - Luzern Newspaper (Switzerland)

HAYDN Symphony No.99 BRAHMS Variations on a Theme by Haydn BRAHMS Academic Festival Overture

SCHUBERT Symphony No.9 The Great

Simone Young conductor (pictured)

Has it really been twenty years since Simone Young first introduced herself to WASO audiences? She takes us back to that first concert with Haydn’s Symphony No.99 and then conducts Brahms’ stirring homage to Haydn before concluding with Brahms’ Academic Festival Overture and its riotous medley of rowdy student songs! “Like the best cooks, Young leaves us wanting more.” The Financial Times Simone Young appears courtesy of Lepley Properties

ASHER FISCH CONDUCTS SCHUBERT’S THE GREAT

Asher Fisch conductor (pictured)

Schumann described Schubert’s ‘Great’ C Major Symphony as the epitome of the Romantic symphony and praised its heavenly length. Taut and lithe, Schubert’s final symphony is an astonishing work of driving power, lyrical beauty and beguiling melodies. Asher Fisch appears courtesy of Wesfarmers Arts

LI-WEI QIN PL AYS SAINT-SAENS

Chinese-born Australian cello virtuoso Li-Wei Qin and conductor Douglas Boyd make a welcome return to WASO. Saint-Saëns’ stormy, mercurial First Cello Concerto is an audience favourite, a virtuosic showpiece that positively erupts with melodic invention. Scottish conductor Douglas Boyd made an impressive WASO debut in 2013 and now brings his insightful interpretation of Vaughan Williams’ sublime Fifth Symphony to Perth audiences.

ASHER FISCH CONDUCTS SCHUMANN

WASO audiences know that Asher Fisch has a rare affinity for Schumann’s symphonies, and each performance under his baton is a very special event. This performance of Schumann’s compact and powerful Fourth Symphony will be no exception. Szymanowski’s Concert Overture is lush, radiant and positively Straussian in its luxuriant orchestration and soaring melodies. Asher Fisch appears courtesy of Wesfarmers Arts

“Li-Wei is the most gifted young cellist I have heard. Aside from an extraordinary technical fluency, he has a musical intelligence and sensitivity which is breathtaking both for its maturity and profound vision.” - The Strad

WASO COMMUNIT Y ENGAGEMENT & EDUCATION A number of WASO’s awardwinning Community Engagement and Education programs are the only opportunity of their kind in Western Australia. Our musicians share music with young people, pre-professional musicians, educators, amateur enthusiasts and diverse communities across the state through workshops and performances.

EDUCATION WEEK 19-25 JUNE 2017

The only program of its kind in WA, WASO delivers an El Sistema-inspired free music education program in two Primary Schools in Kwinana.

ECHO KIDS’ CUSHION CONCERTS

Brings students in all year levels at Onslow School together to actively engage in learning through music and performance.

A 15-piece WASO ensemble, led by an outstanding presenter, introduces children (0-6 years) to the instruments of the orchestra through famous repertoire and popular favourites.

ECHO IN SCHOOLS

Interactive and engaging performances for students in K-Year 6, these programs introduce the Orchestra, its music and musicians.

ONSLOW KIDS MUSIC EDUCATION (OK ME!)

THE RUSTY ORCHESTRA

The only opportunity of its kind in WA, active community musicians sit side-by-side WASO members to rehearse and create a larger than life symphony orchestra, culminating in a free performance for the general public on 24 June 2017.

HOSPITAL ORCHESTRA PROJECT (HOP)

MUSIC FOR SCHOOLS

A collaboration with the School of Special Educational Needs: Medical and Mental Health at Perth Children’s Hospital, to share our music with children, families and carers in this healthcare setting.

INTERNATIONAL ARTIST MASTERCLASS PROGRAM

WASO musicians perform for students with Special Education Needs in the comfort of their school environment

A variety of programs that offer students the chance to observe rehearsals, attend performances and meet WASO musicians across our 2017 season, as well as at Education specific events. Providing invaluable access to world-class visiting artists for pre-professional music students. This free program is presented at the University of Western Australia School of Music.

COMPOSITION PROJECT

Selected emerging WA composers develop their skills in a professional environment by writing an original composition for a WASO chamber ensemble, mentored through rehearsals and performance. 40

CRESCENDO

WASO shines the spotlight on the colour and variety of its Community Engagement & Education portfolio, presenting a selection of programs for students of all ages, including free performances for the general public.
