Exciting young Spanish cellist Pablo Ferrández makes his WASO debut performing a cornerstone of the cello repertoire - Dvorák’s ever-popular Concerto. Its exquisite melodies and lush harmonies are the work of a composer nostalgic for his homeland and mourning a beloved sister. Prokofiev’s Fifth Symphony is a wartime testament which the composer described as “a symphony of the greatness of the human spirit”. This powerful work is brought to life by rising star American conductor Joshua Weilerstein. “Pablo Ferrández will be one of the best cellists in the future. No: he is already.” Diapason Magazine (France)

The sublime perfection of Mozart bookends this program, complemented by the irresistible ° Jazz 1920s rhythms and colours of Martinu’s Suite. One of his final symphonic masterpieces, Mozart’s radiant 39th Symphony contrasts intimacy with grandeur - and not just a little musical mischief! The rustic vitality and lyricism of Dvorák’s evergreen Violin Concerto is perfectly suited to Grace Clifford, 2014 winner of the ABC Young Performer of the Year Award. “Clifford’s depth of musical maturity is way beyond her years.” - Limelight Magazine
