Because we are a Christian school, our hiring model is not the same as those of most educational institutions. Here we believe, as Tim Keller said in King’s Cross, “that the life, death and resurrection of Jesus form the central event of cosmic and human history as well as the central organizing principle of our own lives. Said another way, the whole story of the world and of how we fit into it is most clearly understood through a careful, direct look at the story of Jesus.” Because of this, we look first for people to teach here who look at the world through this lens. Their expected outcomes with the children go far beyond their subject specialty, or the AP score a child earns, or the college it helps the child attend, or the college sports career to which the child and his/her family aspires, or anything else.

Dear Wesleyan Families and Friends, As I write this, the major international stock exchanges have been through a week of unprecedented fluctuation amid an increasingly uncertain economic environment. The debate in the houses of Congress over deficits and budget balancing has reached new heights, as two conflicting views of government parry for dominance in our country. In this atmosphere of shifting realities sit our families and our school, each trying to persevere. For the school, the object is to create ever-increasing real value for the children who attend Wesleyan and, thereby, the parents who direct their resources to this place. This report is about that value Wesleyan tries to create for our families. Ninety-eight percent (98%) of Wesleyan parents contributed $1.267 million to the 2010-2011 Annual Fund. Said another way, all but 2% of our families invested in the financial wellbeing of the school beyond the tuition that they were required to pay. Even more remarkable is that our 98% participation rate included gifts from the families of most of the 80 children who received need-based financial aid during the 2010-2011 term. The $1.267 million total was a record for our school, and it came in a very challenging economy. We also had a record number of our alumni contribute to the alumni fund (21%). How can this be explained except by saying that the school is creating real, discernable value for its service to children and their families. One of life’s realities that all of us face is that the care, development and upkeep of people is expensive. The issues confronted by the struggling economies of the world are largely about this fact. How can all the services humans want, be provided either by individuals or organizations or governments? These are the debates that rage. Throwing money at the problems we face is an old and oftentimes ineffective solution. Money does not guarantee value. And yet in the case of a school, well-invested money can produce exceptional results. Wesleyan takes the money that we receive in tuition and gifts and invests it in children. The investment vehicle we use (besides our facilities) is the adults we hire. It is their job to nurture the children in their care and to serve as sources of light for those with whom they often spend ten or more hours a day.

People who can do this well are not standing on every corner or teaching in every school. But once we find (or rather God brings to us) one of these extraordinary people, we are challenged to provide them the salaries and benefits that are competitive in the marketplace where we live. Those who nurture need nurture themselves, and Wesleyan has done a good job of providing for our teachers to allow them the freedom to do their jobs well. And when our teachers do their jobs well, the value created in the children they impact is something to behold. As a school, Wesleyan’s motto of Jesus, Others, Yourself, plays out in the ways our teachers encourage our students. The JOY motto is really a priority system that, when put in place in one’s life, makes everything else come together. What all of our children want most is to be happy and assured that the problem of death can be overcome. Our teachers, by who they are, their familiarity with God’s word in the Bible, and how they prioritize their own lives, create eternal value for the children here. They give our children the answers to these questions in daily contact while they encourage them in their studies, their sports and in all their activities. Where else can a child receive reinforcement of this kind from a variety of people in a variety of venues from early in the morning until evening from the age of five until they are ready to leave home for college? Jesus has overcome the world, and our staff works every day to help our children see their place in it as children of a loving creator and the world as it really is. This is the kind of value of which we speak when we talk about investing here. The return on investment here is much more than the alternative investments available that seek other standards of measure. Our goals are very long term. Simply put, the names in this report are those of people whom we want to experience more value from their investment here than any other investment they have ever made. We are convinced that Wesleyan provides that value. Everyone here is committed to continuing that record of unmatched returns. In Christ,

Zach Young, Headmaster

2010-2011 ANNUAL REPORT OF WESLEYAN SCHOOL

Mission Statement:

Wesleyan’s mission is to be a Christian school of academic excellence by providing each student a diverse college preparatory education guided by Christian principles and beliefs; by challenging and nurturing the mind, body, and spirit; and by developing responsible stewardship in our changing world.

School Scripture for 2010 – 2011: Spiritual Disciplines SPIRITUAL DISCIPLINES (August) “And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.” II Corinthians 3:18 PRAYER (September): “In the morning, O LORD, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait in expectation.” Psalm 5:3 SERVICE (October): “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.” Philippians 2:3-4 FASTING (November): “Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” Matthew 4:4 WORSHIP (December): “Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth. Worship the LORD with gladness; come before him with joyful songs. Know that the LORD is God. It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.” Psalm 100:1-3 STUDY (January): “Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” Romans 12:2 SOLITUDE (February): ”The LORD is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him; it is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the LORD. It is good for a man to bear the yoke while he is young. Let him sit alone in silence, for the LORD has laid it on him.” Lamentations 3:25-28 SIMPLICITY (March): “Keep falsehood and lies far from me; give me neither poverty nor riches, but give me only my daily bread.” Proverbs 30:8 CONFESSION (April): “Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.” James 5:16 SUBMISSION (May): “Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me and for the gospel will save it.” Mark 8:34-35 2010-2011 ANNUAL REPORT OF WESLEYAN SCHOOL

God asks us glorify Him but also to use his provisions wisely. Steve Deaton, Billy Coxhead and others did yeoman’s work in arranging the financing and structure of the tablet program to minimize tuition increases. The Finance Committee, under Steve’s leadership, also balanced the budget, allocated annual funds, and made certain that Wesleyan was one of the very few schools in this area with no debt. The Bible speaks often about money and discourages debt. Again, we are seeing God’s purpose at work.

Therefore, in the present case I advise you: Leave these men alone! Let them go! For if their purpose or activity is of human origin, it will fail. But if it is from God, you will not be able to stop these men; you will only find yourselves fighting against God. Acts 5:38-39 Wesleyan School had a remarkable year in 2010-2011. The two verses from Acts talk about God’s purposes, plans and activities. All of us at Wesleyan feel the purposes of God in our mission statement. We should never lose sight of God’s involvement in the plan and activities of this school. Look at how the gift of the land from Dan Cowart in 1996 has flourished into an 82 acre developed K-12 campus. Similarly, Raymond Walker’s dream of a mission trip has evolved and expanded into 11 mission trips involving over 250 middle and high school students. Reflect on the numerous activities that are led by Godly teachers fulfilling God’s mission in their lives and the lives of the students. God’s plans and His hand are also at work in the worldly and mundane. Ninety-eight percent (98%) of our parents gave to the school last year. The worldly might congratulate the Development Office, Anna Tanner, the Board, and the class volunteers. Yet, 715 of 729 families found enough that was Godly about Wesleyan to make a gift. God found a way to touch 715 parents who put aside their worldly concerns to say there is something bigger at this school. God reached into people’s hearts and, in turn, they responded. In short, the 98% was God’s plan. Another example of God’s work is in the incredible response to GOAL, the Georgia state tax credit program. Eight hundred seventy-five thousand dollars ($875,000) for financial aid was raised primarily in increments of $2500 or less. Parents and grandparents already writing a large tuition check and already donating to the annual fund, took advantage of a program to help not their own child, but someone else’s. Truly, this was God’s activity. This past school year we made many improvements to the campus physical plant utilizing God’s provisions: sphalt paving repairs, remodeling student study areas to accommodate the tablet initiative, expansion of the Cubs Den, expansion of the MS/HS clinic area as well as renovation of the lower school playground with gifts from the Parents Club. God will lead us in the planning for our future facility needs. Tom Menefee and the Building and Grounds Committee are continuously assessing our future needs for remodeling, enhancement and upkeep of our facilities.

Edress Darsey chaired the Education Committee to look at our admissions applications and enrollment per grade. While Wesleyan is one of a literal handful of schools not to suffer an enrollment drop in the economic downturn, we must be sensitive to changing demographics and admissions trends. After many hours analyzing the data prepared by Andy Cook, Chris Cleveland and the admissions office, the decision was reached to continue our enrollment strategy established in the Board’s strategic plan. Three trustees retired from the Board this year: Sherri Austin, Frank Bell, and Jill Felts. Sherri was one of the members of the original board that saw the need to move to the new campus. Sherri has served on every committee of the Board. For her nearly 20 years of service, her family’s donation of Austin Chapel, and Sherri’s Godly devotion and love to Wesleyan, we cannot say thank you enough. Frank served on the Finance and Development Committees. He has assisted with many of the IT projects at Wesleyan. Jill has been a leader of expansion of the fine arts at Wesleyan. She has chaired the Artist Market and served as board liaison to the Arts Alliance, while also serving on the Development Committee. Frank and Jill have served the Lord at Wesleyan: all of us say thank you. We welcome three new members to the Board. Mary Ramsey is the mother of Craig ’06, James ’08, Barrett ‘17 and Patrick ’17. Mary and her husband, Craig, have been involved with athletics, academics, and almost every other area of school life for the last 15 years. Mary’s long term involvement will be a wonderful addition to the school. Don Barden, father of Jake’13, Luke ’15, and Nicholas ’17, has been an active member of the Development Committee. His incorporation of “joyful giving” and “Godly work” has been instrumental in focusing our fund raising efforts the last two years. Frank Simpson, father of Mike ’14 and Sam ’15, has extensive experience as a trustee of another board in the greater Atlanta area. Frank’s expertise in school financing, fund raising and governance will be a great addition to the Board. We are living in a challenging and tumultuous world as God promises. God has exposed His will at crucial times to Wesleyan. He will continue to do that as long as we acknowledge we are doing God’s work, not ours. May God Bless You,

God’s provision is also shown in the tablet initiative for the middle and high school. After a two year study spearheaded by Kathy Benson, Chris Cleveland, and Carol Horner, the board endorsed the tablet program. The program provides significant teaching advantages and methodologies to all students and all abilities. God’s purpose is again at work. 6

Wesleyan Parents Club Pam Carver & Lisa Mannion, Co-Presidents 2010-2011 A spindly little sparrow is lying on his back in the middle of the road. A horseman comes by and asks the sparrow what he’s doing lying upside down like that. “I heard the heavens are going to fall today,” said the sparrow. “Oh,” said the horseman, “and I suppose your spindly little legs can hold up the heavens?” “One does what one can,” said the sparrow, “one does what one can”.

The Food for Thought program, in partnership with Publix, generated funds that were distributed directly to classroom teachers at the beginning of the school year. Our teachers use these funds for classroom support, so please remember to enroll in the program and scan your card each time you visit Publix.

1 Peter 4:10 says “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others.” The Wesleyan Parents Club is very blessed by the flock of sparrows that ‘did what they can’ this school year. As a collective parent community, we strengthened long standing programs and provided fellowship opportunities for parents, students and educators. Our best estimate is that over 350 volunteers gave over 5000 hours to our school community this year. We extend heartfelt thanks to those who supported the Parents Club with talents and time.

Lives of our children were enriched this school year through events sponsored by the Wesleyan Parents Club including Hoe Down, Grandparents Day, Cotillion, and parenting classes. Volunteers also served our community through the Red Cross Blood Drive, the Moms-in-Touch prayer group, and Serve His League. We supported our teachers and staff with project assistance, monthly treats and a year-end luncheon. We provided hospitality for applicants and their families and organized J.O.Y. support for our current families. In November and December, Wesleyan Parents Club volunteers decorated our campus and ran a Mistletoe Market, spreading a big dose of Christmas cheer.

In the next school year, the Parents Club is moving in a new direction with a focus on friend-raising rather than fund-raising, so we especially appreciated your generous support of this last Innisbrook fundraiser. The Parents Club is also grateful to our community for supporting the Grow the Garden Gala Auction. We cherish this fellowship opportunity to celebrate our school’s many blessings. Over 600 people, about 35% of our families, attended the Gala which raised almost $300,000. One third of that amount will go toward the purchase of tablets for the middle and high schools. Another third of that amount will go toward lower school playground renovations for learning activities. Since no part of our tuition payment is for financial aid, the final third of the Parents Club gift to the school will go toward financial aid, the bulk for the benefit of existing families. The Parents Club enjoys partnering with the Development Office for this special event as we all work together to grow the Wesleyan garden!

2010-2011 ANNUAL REPORT OF WESLEYAN SCHOOL

Continued enthusiasm, creativity and hard work poured into our programs stand as a testament to the unity and strength of our school community and the collective initiative makes Wesleyan unique and special. If you want to plug-in to the heartbeat of Wesleyan, visit the Parents section of the school website. The message of the Parents Club is adopted from Psalm 100 which says “Serve with Gladness”. Thanks so much to those who stepped up this year–we’re looking to be 350 strong volunteers again next year!

Wesleyan Arts Alliance

Doug Farley, President 2010-2011

Blessed to Be A Blessing… Enriching the Arts at Wesleyan

Mission Statement: The purpose of Wolftrackers is to support Wesleyan athletics through co-operating fundraising efforts and help foster a sense of school spirit. Financial support goes towards underwriting a material portion of the athletic department’s annual budget.

Our mission: Believing that God, the Great Creator, has blessed each individual with creative gifts to reflect His character, the Wesleyan Arts Alliance seeks to nurture and encourage each student in the discovery of their God given talents to bring glory to God and to His kingdom. We provide financial, physical and spiritual support to all visual and performing arts programs. The WA A Board is very thankful to the families of Wesleyan for their incredible support in 2010-2011. Our membership was larger than ever, with over 200 families joining us in our mission to support the Arts at Wesleyan. Parents and students also contributed to the Arts at Wesleyan through their countless volunteer hours. We were blessed to have close to 200 volunteers give generously of their time to run our events this year. It truly takes ‘a village’ to run events seamlessly, and our Wesleyan families are always there for us, whether it be behind a cash register, cooking a dish at home or organizing fundraising orders. We had an exciting year in the Arts Alliance this year! The 2011 Artist Market, co-chaired by Lisa Detter-Hoskin, Jamie Stewart and Leianne Messina-Brown, was our most amazing Market yet. The Market generated over $130,000 in sales, making it a phenomenal success not only as a fundraiser but also as a wonderful time of community for our Wesleyan family. On opening night, we were proud to celebrate Kathi Urban and her outstanding service to Wesleyan upon her retirement. The Market hosted more artists than ever before, many of them members of our Wesleyan community. The Children’s Market was, as always, a special place for our students from kindergarten through high school to see their own work displayed proudly amidst the work of our professional artists. Due to the success of both the Artist Market and our other fundraisers, Christmas Cards and Original Works, we were able to give back to the Arts at Wesleyan in a variety of ways. Anticipated profits from this year’s fundraisers have already been allocated for the Arts Department Wish List. Some of those items this year included ten new pottery wheels, two Canon Rebel cameras, a large format color printer and some much needed storage pieces for our art teachers. However, we were also able to give above and beyond what we anticipated. Our additional purchases included a new state-of-the-art digital video camera for recording school events and performances, a new sound system for the lower school, new wireless microphones for Powell Theater, a beautiful 9 x 12 screen (you may have already seen it around campus!), a portable band podium, and a lighting kit for the green room in the lower school. In addition to these gifts, the Arts Alliance has also committed to donate $2,500 each year to financial aid for a deserving student involved in the Arts at Wesleyan. We are so grateful for the continuing support of the Wesleyan community. Whether through membership, volunteering, fundraising or praying for our mission, we sincerely appreciate each and every one of you. We’re looking forward to another great year for the Arts in 2011-2012!

Wesleyan seeks to encourage excellence in all aspects of student life – spiritually, academically, the arts, and athletics. Overcoming challenges faced in athletic competition helps Wesleyan students develop coping skills they utilize the rest of their lives. Membership and active participation in Wesleyan Wolf Trackers organization supports this mission. Through parent member support, Wolf Trackers donated over $76,000 to Wesleyan athletics. Of this total, $58,000 went towards the athletic department’s 2010/2011 budget. Despite Wesleyan School’s small size, middle and high school students have an exceptional number of sports to choose from each season. Wolf Trackers is pleased to play an important role supporting each and every sport. Wesleyan athletics enjoyed continued resounding success 2010/2011 school year as evidenced by: • Wesleyan won the 2010/2011 GADA Dodge Director’s Cup overall award for the fourth consecutive year. • Four state championships (boys cross country; girls basketball; boys swim; and boys tennis), plus nine individual state champions! Wolf Trackers appreciates the many Wesleyan teachers and community coaches who train, coach and mentor Wesleyan student athletes. Without these men and women, Wesleyan athletics would not enjoy such outstanding success. Even more significant is the consistent teaching, guidance, and direction they offer our students, showing them that though winning is important, the real objective is to conduct themselves in a manner pleasing to God in all they do. Financial support benefitting Wesleyan athletics programs during twelve months ending June 30, 2011: Contribution to overall athletic department budget:......$58,000 Athletic summer camp financial assistance:....................$2,000 Upgrade football stadium sound system:.......................$10,000 Batting cage improvements:..........................................$3,000 Volleyball standards, John Deere Gater, golf bags:...........$2,000 Totals:.....................................................................$75,000

Goal Scholarship Georgia Tax Credit Program This year more than ever financial aid has become increasingly important to Wesleyan. Since 2008, the state of Georgia has allowed for the redirection of up to $2,500 of state income tax liability to a qualified student scholarship program, for the purpose of needs based financial aid. Wesleyan participates with this qualified student scholarship program known as Georgia GOAL. Through the GOAL program Wesleyan has provided aid to students whom we might otherwise have not been able to serve, thus furthering Wesleyan’s ability to fulfill its Christian mission. We would like to thank Wesleyan parents, grandparents, faculty and friends for their participation and support. PLANNED GIVING & THE LEGACY SOCIETY OPPORTUNITIES TO LEAVE A LEGACY The Endowment Fund For Wesleyan to be a top tier institution, endowment becomes a pressing need. Endowments are a pool of funds that continue in perpetuity. A designated portion of the return (currently 4%) provides a stream of income to support financial aid, faculty, and capital maintenance. We currently have ongoing needs to add to our current endowment of $10 million. There are three major components of the Endowment Fund: • Financial Aid: Endowment funds for Financial Aid allow Wesleyan to help current Wesleyan families in need. In addition, financial aid also provides educational opportunities for students with diverse talents, backgrounds, and interests who will enhance Wesleyan’s student body. • Faculty Salaries: Wesleyan’s commitment is to hire only faculty members who exhibit a personal Christian faith. Every faculty member is expected to lead, teach, and mentor our students by example in the way they conduct their own lives. Endowment for faculty salaries enables the school to attract and retain Christian faculty of the highest caliber. • Capital Endowment: New buildings have been built, but as they age, they will always require new roofs, new chillers, and major IT improvements. This endowment allows us to enhance these structures.

as Wesleyan – tuition, Annual Fund, and income from endowment. Currently, our endowment provides less than 1% of the operating budget – ideally, it needs to provide at least 15%. For Wesleyan to be in the top tier of schools, we need to dramatically raise our endowment to at least $30 million. One of the best ways to do this is through Legacy Society gifts of life insurance, charitable trusts, will bequests or retirement plan assets. From our original group of 15 donors, the Legacy Society has grown to 46, including the entire Board of Trustees. These people are making a permanent gift that outlasts their tenure as parents and, above that, their service to the school. Particularly in this area, we are grateful for the small and knowledgeable group of volunteers who work with the Development Office to direct our planned giving efforts. This committee includes Brian Frank and Paul Robertson. Bequests Including Wesleyan School as a beneficiary in one’s will provides a meaningful future gift to the school as well as savings in estate taxes. Life Insurance Policies A life insurance policy naming Wesleyan School as owner and beneficiary may provide a substantial future gift to the school. The value of the policy, as well as the annual premium payments, may be tax-deductible and will be treated as annual gifts to the school. Charitable Trusts Charitable remainder trusts may provide lifetime income, immediate tax savings, and avoidance of capital gains tax while establishing a major gift for Wesleyan as the trust’s ultimate beneficiary.

Legacy Society Wesleyan, like all independent schools, exists because someone felt a need for the institution. There are only three ways to fund a school such

GIVING TO WESLEYAN Capital Campaign The financial support of this school is dependent upon the support of every family. Capital Campaigns exist to fund new buildings, purchase additional land and create the endowment for the school. Annual Fund Campaign Since tuition does not cover the full cost of a Wesleyan education, tax-deductible gifts to the Annual Fund fulfill a number of needs. These unrestricted contributions supplement the school’s operating budget and provide dollars needed for faculty salaries and financial aid. The entire Wesleyan community is asked to give to the Annual Fund. The Annual Fund begins July 1st and ends June 30th, coinciding with our fiscal year. Restricted and Memorial Gifts These gifts are designated for specific requests for program and extracurricular activities.
