call to urgency and provided $652,000 for 2013 compared to $582,000 in 2012. A 12% increase in three less months is a very impressive accomplishment. Chris Cleveland, Andy Cook, and Matt Cole on our Development Office staff worked so hard to get the word out to make this happen. In 2012-2013, Wesleyan provided $1.4 million to 117 children who would otherwise not have been able to attend the school. Money from Georgia GOAL played a significant role in helping children with demonstrated need attend who came to Wesleyan from public schools.

Dear Wesleyan Families and Friends, As I do each year before writing the next letter in a series, I review the one of the previous year. Not often do I feel as though the previous letter was everything that could be said about a subject and well-stated, too. Surprisingly, I believe the gift report letter from 2012 painted a picture of the financial structure and progress at Wesleyan about as well as I am capable of doing. But this year, thanks to God’s movement in the hearts of our friends and families and a lot of hard work by volunteers and staff, we have a new story to tell. I need not repeat myself. The story of this year is about the success of the fifth capital campaign in Wesleyan’s history on the new campus (Shared Blessings) and the improvements now underway representing the fruit of that effort. At this writing, the Shared Blessings Capital and Annual Giving Campaign has received gifts and three year pledges totaling more than $16,719,000 with 97% of our families participating. The Annual Fund portion of this for the 2012-2013 term was $930,000. The 97% parent participation is exceeded by the 99% rate achieved only once at Wesleyan in 2006-2007. The total of $16.7 million committed represents a per capita blessing of more than $14,700 for every one of Wesleyan’s 1136 students enrolled at the beginning of the year. The annual fund total of $930,000 calculates to $819 of support per child for the operating budget. Without this, each student would owe an extra $819 in tuition, or services of that amount would have to be eliminated. Alumni percentage giving reached 33% which is the highest rate yet in our short history. Our most senior alums are still only 33 years old. I believe alumni giving can be over 50% (only a very few schools in the country have achieved support at this ratio) and we are working to reach this standard on a consistent basis in the years ahead. In addition to gifts to the school, the Georgia GOAL state income tax credit also provided necessary support for financial aid. Each year that this tax credit has existed, the funds set aside at the State Department of Revenue have been fully subscribed earlier and earlier in the year. In 2011, no applications for the credit were accepted after November. In 2012, the fund’s availability moved up to August as all the independent schools in the state encouraged their patrons to participate as early as possible. This year, despite an increase in the amount available authorized by the Governor, the fund was fully subscribed in May. Even with the earlier close date, Wesleyan’s friends and families answered the

The gift numbers (Georgia GOAL is a tax credit, not in any true sense a gift. Therefore Georgia GOAL is not included in these calculations.) add to the total that has been contributed to Wesleyan since the move to the Norcross campus in 1996. Total gifts received have amounted to over $125 million to create and sustain Wesleyan over the last 17 years. Doing the math, this amounts to $110,000 for every student who began the 2012-2013 school year at Wesleyan. Safe to say, only a few current parents can claim they have provided this level of support outside of tuition to provide the Wesleyan experience for their children. For most, someone else has paid the price. Does sacrificially paying a price for something that you cannot do for yourself sound familiar? God has made Wesleyan possible for this generation and for generations to come. It has been done through a series of unlikely events and a surprising group of people who have provided out of their own resources to make Wesleyan “a light on a hill” for Christ in our community. By the time you receive this report, most of the projects included in the Shared Blessings Campaign will be completed or nearing completion. The Campaign continues for the next two years for new families as we seek to reach our Annual Fund goals. We also want to accomplish some security measures throughout the campus and especially in the lower school as the result of the Board’s Security Committee work this past year. Additionally, we want to continue to attract gifts to the school’s endowment fund which reached $13 million due to gifts and strong performance. Brian Brown, Dan Kane, Paul Robertson, Matt Cole and Billy Coxhead have done great work in managing the school’s investments. That said, the school’s youth as an institution means our endowment resources are far behind those of our competition. We will continue our efforts to increase the wealth of the school in every way that we can for the yearly benefit of our children and their families. This is the last time I will address the Wesleyan community from this platform. I will work hard in my last year as your Headmaster to make the 2013-2014 gift effort a banner one for the school. If we can achieve 100% participation by the parents and more than 50% by the alumni, this combination would be the nicest possible going away presents! In Christ,

Zach Young, Headmaster

Faith allows a community to accomplish monumental tasks simply by believing it can be done. Prayerfully the Wesleyan community is brought together to accomplish great things for the Glory of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Simpson, Mary Ramsey, Erika Laughlin, Edress Darsey, Mike Nicklaus, Mark McIntosh and board Vice-Chair Bob Worthington played a vital role in the execution of the Development Committee efforts.

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. Philippians 4:6

Financially, Wesleyan remains on solid footing with our investment assets and operating budgets. We continue to operate with a surplus while managing our assets with no debt to restrict our operations. In keeping with the changing world financial markets, the Investment Committee of the Board adjusted the way we invest our resources through a reallocation of our investment assets. Steve Deaton’s leadership of the Finance Committee and Billy Coxhead’s leadership of the Business Office continue to provide prudent stewardship of our assets and revenues. Trustees Bob Atkinson, Paul Robertson, Michael Parks, Frank Simpson and Danny Strickland provided diligent effort in the execution of the Finance Committee’s role this year.

The accomplishments of this past year within our Christian mission’s framework were a demonstrative result of our communities belief in the mission of Wesleyan and the Christ-centered life we want our children to experience. The Wesleyan community undertook an ambitious three-year campaign to raise $16.5 million dollars for capital needs, endowment and our annual fund. Similarly as with previous campaigns that began with our providential relocation to Peachtree Corners, there were questions as to how and if this could be done. The answers came quickly. Our capital and endowment goals were reached over the course of the first year. The Annual Fund goals are still out in front of us for the remaining two years of the campaign. Ironically, we spent many hours contemplating how we would stage construction over the three years of the campaign. But as man’s plans were replaced by God’s will we are building everything we planned in the first year of the campaign and have funded the endowment portions of the campaign as well. Capital Campaign The interim results of our capital campaign are miraculous. Our Annual Fund and Shared Blessings Campaign again reached an amazing 97% parent participation level as our constituency confirmed our needs and contributed sacrificially to the campaign. Alumni parents and foundations also played a unique and overwhelming role in helping with the overall campaign results. Many thanks go out to Anna Tanner, Chairperson of the Development Committee and her development team for their hard work and persistence in raising these precious resources. Trustees Kim Sutton-Adair, Dan Cowart, Diane Duane, Frank

2012-2013 ANNUAL REPORT OF WESLEYAN SCHOOL

The Building Committee had perhaps one of their busiest years in recent memory with the start of construction on campus, implementing the Security Committee recommendations and implementing renovations and repairs throughout the campus. Construction has commenced on the renovation of Austin Chapel, Warren Hall, the tennis center, the entry gates and the expansion of the lake fields. Many thanks go out to Bill Stark, Chairman of the committee, and Trustees Kim Sutton-Adair Edress Darsey, Erika Laughlin, Jim Pierce, Mary Ramsey, whose service was above and beyond their normal roles this past year. Through Annual Fund giving, capital campaign proceeds and operating revenues we were able to enhance security measures throughout the campus. The most visible changes will be to the lower school where electronic door locks are being installed, modifications to the entry foyer and new entry procedures will be implemented. Entry gates, police hours and security camera systems were also enhanced to benefit the entire campus. The Security Subcommittee under Edress Darsey’s leadership will

continue to monitor our procedures and make additional recommendations as the new measures are implemented and operational outcomes are experienced. Strategic Plan The board will be seeking God’s will for our future as we finalize our fifth strategic plan as a K-12 unit school. The faculty completed the school reaccreditation process last year and received reaccreditation from SAIS-SACS, and the Board began the strategic plan process with constituency surveys and a strategic planning retreat attended by over sixty trustees, administrators, faculty and parents. Paul Robertson and Danny Strickland are assimilating the documents for review and approval by the Board. If Wesleyan remains focused on God and His instruction, Wesleyan will persevere and sustain its mission through all worldly challenges to our school. New Trustees We welcome two new trustees to the Board this year; Charlotte Beltrami and Land Bridgers. We are also welcoming back Erika Laughlin and Tom Menefee who will both be serving their second term as trustees. Charlotte and her husband Dave have two sons and a daughter at Wesleyan, Sam in the 11th grade, Caroline in the 10th grade and Henry in the 8th grade. Land and his wife Katie have two girls at Wesleyan, Caitlin in the 3rd grade and Britain in the 1st grade. Erika and her husband Bo have one son at Wesleyan, Hayes in the 9th grade. They also have two Wesleyan alumni children, Fendall, class of 2012 and Miles graduated last May in the class of 2013. Tom and Pamela have two sons, Jacob in the 1st grade and Nicholas is a senior. Kim Sutton-Adair and Jim Pierce will roll off the Board this year. Kim has served on the Building and Development Committees for five years and also served as the Wolftrackers Board Liaison.

2012-2013 ANNUAL REPORT OF WESLEYAN SCHOOL

Jim Pierce served as a critical member of our Building Committee providing his professional advice and insight to the committee. Their dedication and support to the school have been remarkable over the last five years. Bill Warren, Chairman of the Committee on Trustees continues to orchestrate the recruitment and orientation of new trustees for the Board. We trust that our new trustees will bring wisdom and experience in the preservation of our mission as we push forward with the capital campaign and strategic plan. Please welcome and thank them for their commitment to Wesleyan. We thank you for your support of Wesleyan and your faith in our mission. May God Bless you,

Rob Binion

2012-2013 ANNUAL REPORT OF WESLEYAN SCHOOL

Wesleyan Arts Alliance Susan Hughes, President 2013-2014 & Dana Sullenberger, President 2012-2013 Mission Statement: Believing that God, the Great Creator, has blessed each individual with creative gifts to reflect His character, the Wesleyan Arts Alliance seeks to nurture and encourage all students in the discovery of their God-given talents to bring glory to God and to His kingdom. We provide financial, physical, and spiritual support to all visual and performing arts programs, kindergarten through grade 12. The Arts Alliance is extremely thankful to the many families who have joined together in support of Wesleyan’s efforts to provide the very best in artistic opportunities for our students. Our children are enormously blessed to have an extensive array of excellent facilities, faculty, and arts options–both as a part of the curriculum and extra-curricularly–and the Arts Alliance is committed to providing as much assistance as possible to all of these programs. During the 2012-13 school year, the Arts Alliance’s membership was larger than ever, and both parents and teachers contributed generously of their time, talents, and treasure to ensure that the arts at Wesleyan continue to grow, thrive, and enrich the lives of every student and family in our midst. Our largest fundraiser and most anticipated community event, the Wesleyan Artist Market, celebrated its 15th year and enjoyed unprecedented success in 2013 with over $160,000 in sales generating $37,000 in support of our arts programs. It also delivered another wonderful weekend of community fellowship and arts appreciation–of the student, parent, faculty, and professional artists and entertainers participating, and of some special members of the alumni arts community at Wesleyan inducted into the Fine Arts Circle of Honor. As in previous years, this wonderful event could not have happened without tremendous volunteer effort, and we are forever grateful to the dozens of people who gave endless hours to make it a reality. Special thanks go to Judy Beaman, who, in her first year as chairperson of the event, introduced several exciting new additions that engaged our students more than ever. There was a student booth section with over 20 student artists sharing their creative wares, and a full lineup of student entertainment that highlighted group and individual musical, dance, and theatrical performances from students in all divisions. The Artist Market funds, coupled with the profits of our annual student art Christmas card sales ($4,000) and membership proceeds ($23,000), are returned to the arts at Wesleyan by fulfilling a variety of fine arts needs and wishes, including: additional Mac computers to be used in choral practice rooms; a wireless headset system and lighting software for the theater that greatly improve

the quality of our productions; $10,000 of new MS and HS band instruments and associated equipment; new cameras for the HS photography program; equipment carts and marching band carriers; a variety of art program resources including glass making materials, easels, and LS storage; a new backdrop and other costume needs for LS plays; 10 large aluminum tables for use at a variety of Fine Arts events; and several other smaller items requested by teachers to improve the classroom experience across the Fine Arts program. The new “Mac lab”, which was completed in the photography classroom of the Fine Arts Building for the start of the 2012-13 school year and involved an investment of over $50,000 of Arts Alliance proceeds, has been a wonderful addition and has met with great excitement from teachers and students alike. At a time when the arts are easily overlooked and underfunded in many academic arenas, we feel enormously blessed by the flourishing arts environment at Wesleyan, and by the support and encouragement given to the celebration of every student’s artistic gifts by administration, faculty, and parents alike. We are extremely grateful, as well, for the outstanding leadership of our organization by Dana Sullenberger during the last school year. THANK YOU again! We hope that every member of the Wesleyan community will take advantage of the myriad artistic presentations and events happening on campus throughout the year, whether their child is currently involved in them or not. These occasions are a wonderful opportunity to engage with our community and celebrate the arts in all of us. Wesleyan’s band and chorus concerts will transport you to a symphony hall, theatrical productions will leave you amazed at the technical excellence and dramatic prowess possible in a school environment, and our visual arts showcases will astound you with a level of artistic talent and commitment some would find unimaginable in middle and high school students. In addition, and never to be overshadowed, the tradition of our lower school productions and concerts will create lasting memories of our children as they begin the journey of finding their own artistic expression. The Arts Alliance expresses grateful appreciation for the continuing support of the arts from so many members of the Wesleyan community. We invite each of you to share in nurturing the beauty of the arts at Wesleyan through Arts Alliance participation in this new school year.

Wesleyan Wolf Trackers

Wesleyan Parents Club

Doug Farley, President 2012-2013

Deena Coughlin & Brandy Gardner, Co-Presidents 2012-2013

Wolf Trackers exists to provide financial support, guidance and leadership for Wesleyan’s interscholastic athletic program. Through athletics, Wesleyan students learn to function within a team; learn the benefit of discipline and learn to overcome challenges faced in athletic competition. These are life skills that will help them become successful long after their time at Wesleyan. The main purpose of our athletic program is to further the school’s Christian mission.

The motto of the Wesleyan Parents Club is to “Serve with Gladness” as we channel our efforts into events and activities that build and strengthen our Wesleyan community. Hundreds of volunteers gave thousands of hours of their free time this past year to promote this mission.

Membership and active participation in Wesleyan Wolf Trackers activities support this mission. Through the generous support of the Wesleyan family, Wolf Trackers donated over $77,000 to Wesleyan athletics during the 2012-2013 school year. Of this total, $65,000 went towards the Athletic Department’s 2012-2013 operating budget. Each and every sport at Wesleyan derives 25% of its budget from Wolf Trackers. All sports are supported proportionally. Despite Wesleyan School’s small size, middle and high school students have an exceptional number of sports to choose from each season. Wolf Trackers is pleased to play an important role supporting each and every sport. Wesleyan athletics enjoyed continued success in the 2012-2013 school year as evidenced by: • An overall 3rd place finish in the GADA Director’s Cup despite being smallest school in AA. • Winner of the 6AA Sportsmanship Award. • Two state championship teams (girls cross country and girls basketball) and three runner-up teams (softball; boys cross country; boys tennis) • Individual state championships took place in wrestling and boys track and field Wolf Trackers appreciates the many Wesleyan teachers and community coaches who train, coach and mentor Wesleyan’s student athletes. Without these men and women, Wesleyan athletics would not enjoy such outstanding success. Even more significant is the consistent teaching, guidance, and direction they offer our students, showing them that though winning is important, the real objective is to conduct themselves in a manner pleasing to God in all they do. To show our appreciation of Wesleyan’s coaches, Wolf Trackers sponsors the Worthington-Freeman Award each year by recognizing a community coach who gives generously of their time and talent through coaching. Newly established in 2012-2013 and funded by Wolf Trackers this award’s inaugural honorees were: Dr. Malcolm Anderson and Buck Shiver. 2012-2013 ANNUAL REPORT OF WESLEYAN SCHOOL

The Parents Club sponsors events that enrich the lives of our students and their families, such as the annual Hoe Down event during Homecoming, Grandparents Day, and Cotillion. Events and committees such as Mistletoe Market, Christmas Decorations, Red Cross Blood Drive, Moms-in-Prayer, J.O.Y., and Serve His League help to enrich our community and build relationships. We celebrate our teachers and staff with library donations, monthly treats and a year-end luncheon. In addition, prospective families are welcomed by our hospitality & welcoming committee. Through the Parents Club, Publix’s Food for Thought program generated over $4,000 that was distributed directly to classroom teachers. Our teachers use these funds for classroom support, so please remember to scan your card each time you visit Publix. Beginning in the summer of 2013, the Johnny’s Pizza program will also benefit our school. Show your card every time you make a purchase at Johnny’s on Peachtree Parkway and 10% of your purchase will be donated to Wesleyan. On April 13, 2013, we came together as a community to celebrate Wesleyan’s many blessings at our bi-annual gala auction, which raised $240,000! We were blessed with an enthusiastic and energetic steering committee led by tri-chairs Darcy Copeland, Darcy Harper, and Wendy Moreland. They implemented many exciting changes which were well received, as our fellow parents and staff came together to enjoy a fun night of camaraderie. Monies donated back to the school via the efforts of these and other Wesleyan Parents Club volunteers will be spent on ServeHis-League Mission activities, pews in the newly renovated Austin Chapel, and Capital Campaign/Security measures, including the installation and naming of the new gates at both the Spalding Drive and Peachtree Parkway entrances. The dedication, creativity, and enthusiasm exhibited by the Parents Club volunteers stands as a testament to the unity and strength of our school community and this is one of the many things that makes Wesleyan unique and special. We hope you will find a committee that interests you and get connected within the Wesleyan Parents Club. Please visit the Parents section of the school website for more information on each of our committees and how to sign up. Our heartfelt thanks go to each and every volunteer who helped to make 2012-2013 a wonderful year!

2012-2013 ANNUAL REPORT OF WESLEYAN SCHOOL

Goal Scholarship Georgia Tax Credit Program Financial aid has become increasingly important to Wesleyan. Since 2008, the state of Georgia has allowed for the redirection of up to $2,500 of state income tax liability to a qualified student scholarship program, for the purpose of need-based financial aid. Wesleyan participates with the qualified student scholarship program known as Georgia GOAL. Through the GOAL program, Wesleyan has provided aid to students whom we might otherwise have not been able to serve, thus furthering Wesleyan’s ability to fulfill its Christian mission. We would like to thank Wesleyan parents, grandparents, faculty and friends for their participation and support.

PLANNED GIVING & THE LEGACY SOCIETY For Wesleyan to be a top tier institution, endowment becomes a pressing need. Endowments are a pool of funds that continue in perpetuity. A designated portion of the return (currently 4%) provides a stream of income to support financial aid, faculty, and capital maintenance. We currently have ongoing needs to add to our current endowment of $13.8 million. There are three

2012-2013 ANNUAL REPORT OF WESLEYAN SCHOOL

major components of the Endowment Fund: • Financial Aid: Endowment funds for Financial Aid allow Wesleyan to help current Wesleyan families in need. In addition, financial aid also provides educational opportunities for students with diverse talents, backgrounds, and interests who will enhance Wesleyan’s student body. • Faculty Salaries: Wesleyan’s commitment is to hire only faculty members who exhibit a personal Christian faith. Every faculty member is expected to lead, teach, and mentor our students by example in the way they conduct their own lives. Endowment for faculty salaries enables the school to attract and retain Christian faculty of the highest caliber. • Capital Endowment: New buildings have been built, but as they age, they will always require new roofs, new chillers, and major IT improvements. This endowment allows us to enhance these structures. Legacy Society Wesleyan, like all independent schools, exists because someone felt a need for the institution. There are only three ways to fund a school such as Wesleyan – tuition, Annual Fund, and income from endowment. Currently, our endowment provides less than 1% of the operating budget – ideally, it needs to provide at least 15%. For Wesleyan to be in the top tier of schools, we need to dramatically raise our endowment to at least $30 million. One of the best ways to do this is through Legacy Society gifts of life insurance, charitable trusts, will bequests or retirement plan assets. From our original group of 15 donors, the Legacy Society has grown to 50, including the entire Board of Trustees. These people are making a permanent gift that outlasts their tenure as parents and, above that, their service to the school. Particularly in this area, we are grateful for the small and knowledgeable group of volunteers who work with the Development Office to direct our planned giving efforts. This committee includes Brian Frank and Paul Robertson. Bequests Including Wesleyan School as a beneficiary in one’s will provides a meaningful future gift to the school as well as savings in estate taxes. Life Insurance Policies A life insurance policy naming Wesleyan School as owner and beneficiary may provide a substantial future gift to the school. The value of the policy, as well as the annual premium payments, may be tax-deductible and will be treated as annual gifts to the school.

Planned Giving & Legacy Society–cont’d. Charitable Trusts Charitable remainder trusts may provide lifetime income, immediate tax savings, and avoidance of capital gains tax while establishing a major gift for Wesleyan as the trust’s ultimate beneficiary. Capital Campaigns exist to fund new buildings, purchase additional land and create the endowment for the school. Annual Fund Campaign Since tuition does not cover the full cost of a Wesleyan education, tax-deductible gifts to the Annual Fund fulfill a number of needs. These unrestricted contributions supplement the school’s operating budget and provide dollars needed for faculty salaries and financial aid. The entire Wesleyan community is asked to give to the Annual Fund. The Annual Fund begins July 1 and ends June 30, coinciding with our fiscal year. Restricted and Memorial Gifts These gifts are designated for specific requests for program and extracurricular activities.
