Welcome from the Headmaster Throughout this issue of The Wesleyan, we are reflecting on personal excellence — a topic I have returned to repeatedly as Headmaster.

For me, the ongoing advance toward personal excellence is now an important part of our vocabulary when discussing life at the College. From students to staff, I have spent my first year here ensuring everyone understands what is expected once you are part of this community.

I genuinely believe that if everyone gives their best every day, the already fine foundation we have always had in place at Wesley College will only grow and develop.

However, for some, the idea of aiming for excellence has the potential to be divisive. They assert that ‘excellence’ has an undertone of being elitist, of seeking to help only the most able. That is not how I view it at all.

In my mind, the focus here is on the ‘personal’ in personal excellence. It is about doing the best that you can do.

We will always celebrate those students who achieve over 99 for their ATAR. That is a given. However, I will celebrate just as equally with a student who worked extremely hard to get to 70 or 80 if they truly gave it their all.

It means we celebrate the students who have taken alternative pathways and left Wesley with a certificate or a job offer.

In addition, it means I will be at the sidelines at Junior School sporting events clapping just as hard for the student who came last, posting their best time ever, as I do for the student who placed first.

It is not elitism; it is pride. It is about instilling a pride to perform, in every arena, with a quiet determination to give it your all.

As Aristotle said, nearly 3000 years ago: ‘excellence is what you repeatedly do’.

This is where we turn to you, the parents.

During my first year, it has been an absolute pleasure to get to know you as a community. You have embraced our march toward personal excellence and I want to take a moment to acknowledge your efforts.

Your support and warm welcome have been a huge part of my positive experience this year.

Still, I want to encourage you to speak freely. If you like something we’re doing, then please let us know — we can consider doing more of it. But, importantly, we genuinely welcome constructive feedback. If something could be done differently or better, let’s talk about it.

Excellence comes from all quarters. By working together to celebrate our achievements, to push Wesley to new heights, we will stride toward our upcoming centenary with renewed optimism.

There are exciting times ahead!

The Headmaster’s Valedictory Day Speech Graduation is an unusual moment. For you, there is an overwhelming feeling of having completed the task.

You worked incredibly hard; you have made it through school. Job done. And you deserve that feeling, as a lot was asked of you and you rose to the challenge.

You need to set a new range of targets for yourself and begin your next round of endeavours. As former US President Barack Obama once said: ‘Fight for your seat at the table. Better yet, fight for a seat at the head of the table.’

Each of you have a unique story, each of you have had your own triumphs and challenges. I celebrate all of you and everything you have achieved.

Of course, those tables can seem impossibly far away. It does not matter whether your goal is art, agriculture, accountancy or academia — to get to the level where you have recognition, where you can make a difference, is difficult.

But, for those of us with a few extra years on the clock, there is an additional feeling. We are immensely proud of all you have done, but we know that — despite this celebration — this is not the end for you, it is only the beginning.

You have equipped yourselves to take on the world — but now you must go and apply your knowledge.

People sometimes liken it to the story of David and Goliath, where you are the underdog graduate and massive corporations are the giant. What chance do you have of getting in and getting ahead?

However, people often forget to think about the reality of the David and Goliath story, so here is a quick recap.

It is the 6th Century BC. Saul and the Israelites are facing the Philistines in the Valley of Elah. Twice a day for 40 days, morning and evening, Goliath, the champion of the Philistines, comes out and challenges the Israelites to send their best fighter to take him on.

The winner of the fight wins the whole battle.

Saul is afraid. I mean, Goliath is big. Six cubits and a span. It’s okay, I had to Google it too. It’s a shade under 10 feet tall.

David, who’s just a young boy bringing food for his older brothers, can’t believe that nobody is willing to take on Goliath, so he says he will give it a go. After all, he’s done a bit of shepherding and fought off bears and lions. How hard could it be?

Saul offers David his armour, which David declines, taking only his staff, his sling and five stones.

David and Goliath confront each other, Goliath with his armour and javelin, David with his staff and sling. They exchange a few words that you can enjoy in Samuel 17 and then David hurls a stone from his sling, hitting Goliath in the centre of his forehead.

One shot. Crack! Goliath is dead. The Philistines flee, the Israelites win and David goes on to become King of Israel.

So, Class of 2019 — how does this relate to you?

Well, we have all heard the story a hundred times, and we all take it on face value that David stepped up and took out Goliath with one shot. What isn’t discussed is the hours and hours of practise that David must have put in with his sling to develop skills in which he knew he could trust.

We don’t talk about his quiet confidence, how — despite his young years — he carried himself with selfbelief but, importantly, not arrogance.

And, in a very literal sense, when David’s opportunity came, he took the shot!

Right now, you are David. You are sitting here today with skills that are innumerable, varied and great. You have plenty more to learn, but you have put in the practice. You should not be afraid to go into the world and take on challenges of every size to get where you want to be.

In addition, you — Class of 2019 — are a great cohort. I haven’t had long to get to know you, but upon meeting you it was immediately obvious that we are sending men into the world who will put the focus on integrity, honesty, knowledge, skills and commitment wherever you go.

When you and your families originally made the choice to become Wesleyans, one of your first purchases was a backpack upon which was printed our version of John Wesley’s family crest.

That crest was not just there as a decoration but as a symbol of the deeper, more fundamental values that we represent. Everything has meaning; the shape of the crest is a shield, to represent protection. The Wyvern represents strength. Three scallop shells honour the Holy Trinity.

But why scallop shells? This is the part I find most interesting. The answer is that the grooves on scallop shells, which meet at a single point, represent the various routes pilgrims travelled, to arrive at a single destination.

And, sure, you have been through a few backpacks since then, but the crest has been a constant, reminding you — day after day — that we all travelled a different route to get here, but Wesley is our bond. For years now, this has been your destination: a place in time that will forever anchor you together.

As a group of young men, you have created a community within your peer group. A community of respect and support for each other that I hope will last for life. Whether you were boarders or day students, you are now inextricably bound.

Remember this: you will always be Wesleyans, and you will always be welcome here.

So, take a leap into the world, take on giants, you may stumble from time to time, but we and your classmates will forever be a network that will support you and lift you up again.

I wish you well, young men; it has been a privilege to make this speech to you as your Headmaster. I will end by saying…go out there and take your shot!

A warm Wesley welcome to Moderator-Elect Mrs Susy Thomas has been appointed as Moderator-Elect to the Uniting Church Western Australia. Her appointment was announced at the annual meeting of the Synod of Western Australia held in September at Scotch College.

An active member of the South Perth Uniting Church, Mrs Thomas’ career includes leadership roles in community service organisations including CEO of Drug ARM WA (now called Hope Community) that provided much needed support to people who are most disadvantaged and marginalised.

‘I deeply value Uniting Church schools and our relationship with them,’ says Mrs Thomas. ‘I have two girls who attended a Uniting Church girls’ school in Western Australia. I have seen how Church based school education helped our daughters grow into the confident young women they are today.’

A message from the College Chaplain The pursuit of personal excellence

As a child growing up in Sri Lanka I was constantly told by my parents, relatives and my school peers that our key objective in life was to be successful and financially abundant.

Many who have achieved such status within the wider community are looked up to as aspirational figures, whether they be media celebrities, successful business or corporate leaders, or those who have pursued political ambition.

As a society, we become fascinated with the success (or downfall) of others, as though through the prism of the lives of others we somehow find meaning in our own. However, nothing could be further from either truth or reality, despite what social media might suggest to the contrary.

In my own case, as an emerging adult, I went about pursuing the material and social goals that had been set for me by others. I made a successful career in the airline industry, which gave my young wife and I the opportunity to emigrate to Australia under the skilled worker program. It was a good life. Family and friends thought I was doing well in the scheme of things.

However, it was not fulfilling. I was, at heart, a seeker of truth.

In the absence of answers, I continued on my merry way, seeking to please others and make them proud of my achievements, yet constantly searching for a deeper meaning to my existence and mission in life.

I looked to the religion of my parents for clues. My father was a Buddhist and my mother a devout Christian. I became increasingly attracted to a certain man from Galilee, known as Jesus. As I read the Gospels, I heard a different voice, calling me in a direction not dependent on wealth, status or power. I also soon realised that choosing to follow this Jesus of Galilee was not a particularly popular pursuit, if all the aspirational goals others had placed upon me were to continue to be realised.

I knew that ultimately, I would need to make a choice and in my early 30s, now with three young daughters, I walked away from it all in order to respond to a call to Christian ministry. I had no idea what it would require.

Close friends stood by me, but others thought I was quite mad, perhaps even a little stupid, when the world had been my oyster.

As this 2019 school year comes to an end, many of you will face similar questions to the ones I faced.

What is it to be successful? What is it to be recognised and looked up to? What academic career do I want to pursue? How do I win a place in society in order to make my mark?

These feelings and aspirations are perfectly normal, but if looked at only through our own eyes, something will be missing. Life is not always about winning, because often our success is as a result of the defeat of others. What I have learnt about life is that one can enjoy success in relationships and in building up the confidence of others through having a deeper appreciation of not only knowing who I am, but also knowing whose I am.

As a young man, I did not have all the information, life experience, financial resources, nor perfect conditions to create a purposeful life. However, I can now look back and realise that with God’s guidance, I was being led in the right direction.

Every life journey includes detours, setbacks, challenges, failures and new beginnings. That is what living is all about. It is how we respond to these challenges that ultimately defines us.

You do not need to have all the information, nor the financial resources, or the perfect conditions to create a purposeful life. What is required is a commitment to take small strides forward, knowing the path will reveal itself if there is a purposeful intent.

Therefore, as choices are made for the future, the pursuit of excellence in living should be our highest goal. We all have a longing to be significant; to make a solid contribution; to be part of something noble and purposeful. All of that is perfectly natural.

However, a guiding motivation is ultimately what will give our life meaning.

I might not have wealth, prestige or corporate power, but I am so glad I made the choices I did. I trust that you too might reflect on what will bring your life happiness, depth of relationships and strength for all the challenges life will bring.

From the Deputy Head Models and theories can offer meaning in a world that sometimes feels devoid of such things. However, rigidly living one’s life in accordance with these constructs can be limiting, as it risks stifling freedom of thought and action.

There are certain theoretical concepts that have stood the test of time though, offering resonance in a more contemporary context. One of these was devised some 2,350 years ago!

Across two seminal ethical treatises, Aristotle undertook a comprehensive examination of the nature of aretê, a Greek term meaning ‘virtue’ or ‘excellence’. His principal concern was human wellbeing. Central to this was the idea that in order to live life at its best, humans need to strive to be virtuous or to practise excellence.

Aristotle also believed that there are two different types of virtue — intellectual and moral. He claimed that the former is attained through education, while the latter is developed through practise and habit.

This conceptualisation of excellence is somewhat different from what many people might understand it to be. In today’s society, excellence is often portrayed as being famous or good at something; with the outcome or result the defining characteristic. Examples abound in business, sport, education, the arts and popular culture with recognition often coming in the form of money and adoration (think ‘Likes’ and ‘Followers’).

In this context, excellence might be considered a function of the ego.

Whereas to Aristotle, excellence is a function of the soul.

This is not to suggest that being talented, notable or wealthy is a bad thing.

Indeed, it can be enjoyable and enlightening.

Rather than settling on a narrow understanding of personal excellence, a broader perspective is offered. One that is more about the process than the outcome; that focusses on character rather than just capacity; that acknowledges hard work as well as attainment; that sits intelligence alongside morality; and that values living well, over material abundance.

In this edition of The Wesleyan you will find various portrayals of personal excellence. Some rightly acknowledge talent, endeavour and achievement.

Others point to intellect, virtue and character. What is common is the context — education.

Why is boarding at Wesley so special?

‘ For me, living and working in the Boarding House means that you become part of a special community, within the larger Wesley community. This community is unique in that whilst it is only a small section of the College, it reaches out further and encompasses the whole of Western Australia and some international areas. Therefore, this community bands together strongly to support one another, embracing different cultures and backgrounds.’

Students are not just restricted to hanging out with those in their same year group. Parents don’t just drop their children at the door and leave — they stay and chat. The staff are present beyond their rostered hours. You see the young kids of staff running around the Dining Hall and understand that it is more than a job. Wesley Boarding is all-inclusive.’

Setting the trend Three life lessons from Peter Trend In the words of the retiring Peter Trend, the impact of a teacher is often hard to measure:

‘As teachers, the biggest influence you have you may never know about. People take various things from your classes that, at the time, you may not have thought much about. It’s that influence that you can’t count or measure, and of which you are often unaware, that is what you’re most proud of as a teacher.’

With a remarkable 46-year tenure of teaching Mathematics at Wesley College, the scope of Peter’s impact is not only widespread, but also immeasurable. He has been an inspiring educator for our students, a much-loved mentor and confidant for our staff, and most importantly, an invaluable member of our community. Both inside and outside the classroom, we are incredibly fortunate to have had Peter involved with the College for so long.

Leaving the Wesley community with one final gift, Peter shared with us his top three life lessons.

1.

Whether on a personal or a professional level, relationships are important.

They are what define your success in life. If you are leading a happy and successful life, there’s every chance that your relationships are strong.

2.

Nothing is ever an absolute.

As a teacher, you may think a student is not doing the right thing, but there is often a story behind that.

Everything is contextual and most things are relative. That’s true of life. You must get the full picture, and once you do, you will often realise that there is not one true answer to the problem at hand.

3.

It’s important to not feel inclined to accept every change that comes your way.

As I have become older, I have become a little bit more conservative. These days, there is so much change that there’s an inevitability about it. I argue that many changes need to be carefully examined in terms of philosophy.

You need to go back and and ask ‘is this doing what we thought it would be doing?’ There’s no point in changing things for the sake of change.

You need a strong philosophical base and an appraisal process. The practice should be an extension of the philosophy.

Alizeh Fiyaz (602) What is your favourite thing to do outside Wesley?

Skateboarding and painting, but my most favourite would be painting because I get to paint whatever I want and use my imagination.

What is your favourite thing to do at Wesley?

I really like Art because we do lots of creative things; another thing I enjoy is Drama because I get to act out certain emotions. I also like the meetings that the Middle School girls have with Ms Stone, because it is where I can share what’s going on in school and tell her if something is bothering me.

What are you looking forward to most next year?

I will be starting at Penrhos College next year, which I am really looking forward to!

What will you miss most about Wesley?

I am going to miss all my friends because they are all really kind and help a lot when I am feeling down. Girls at Wesley get a lot of opportunities and that is really special for me and if you have an issue or something that is bothering you, the teachers and staff are really good at helping you overcome that.

I would encourage girls to come to Wesley because you get to interact with boys and when you grow up, talking to boys won’t be a problem.

Luke de Laeter (11M) What is your favourite thing to do outside Wesley?

I run my own business called Luke's Bees, which I started in 2016 and involves sharing my passion for bees and biodiversity. I teach others about the importance of bees in my unique Bee Incursion Program. Bee education is essential for understanding the important link between bees and our sustainable future. On the weekends in spring and summer, I care for my hives and extract honey.

What is your favourite thing to do at Wesley?

It would have to be Metalwork and Woodwork. I love to build things, rather than write essays! This year I was lucky to win the Headmaster’s Award for Design Technologies and the P&F Creative Industries Award at the Illumination Exhibition. At the exhibition, I displayed my waterfall jarrah and resin table, metalwork bee light and bee shadow boxes.

What has been the most amazing thing you have done recently?

I was invited to the Global Table Conference in Melbourne as a Teenovator. Global Table is Asia Pacific’s largest international agri-food innovation event! My highlight was being chosen to speak with the 68th U.S. Secretary of State, John F. Kerry, about bees, biodiversity and my business.

Incorporated, a global manufacturer of food products, among many other businesses. In addition, I delivered my Global Message to the audience before the keynote address from Shama Sukul Lee, Founder and CEO of Sunfed. It was an amazing three days of public speaking, networking and learning more about the future of food and agriculture.

Anything exciting planned for over the summer?

I am expanding my apiary and purchasing 10 more hives; this will allow me to increase my raw honey sales. Summer is always busy as it is peak honey flow time so I will be harvesting every second weekend.

I also hope to get some part-time work with a commercial beekeeper.

the Dragon Evolution Quest?

Wendy and Billy are your typically amazing Wesley Junior School students. They work hard to collect Dragon Eggs from their teachers to achieve the different stages of the Dragon Evolution Quest. They collect eggs by showing initiative, listening to their teachers, working to do their personal best all the time, using their best manners, treating others with respect and compassion, demonstrating courage and integrity and working hard.

The Dragon Evolution Quest is not easy and is designed to get harder as the students achieve each level.

Level 3 — Elder

Level 2 — Wyrmling Level 1 — Hatchling When 30 Dragon Eggs are collected, they hatch and turn into a Hatchling, the first stage of the dragon life cycle. Wylie is a Hatchling (a young dragon) and needs help to clean up his toys and a reminder to put his rubbish in the bin after he has finished eating. Sometimes he even forgets to zip up his bag. At each Junior School Assembly, Wylie chooses the cleanest classroom inside and outside, with student bags zipped up and they receive the Wylie Award.

Collecting another 30 Dragon Eggs helps the Hatchling grow and transform into a Wyrmling. Wyatt is a Wyrmling (a teenage dragon) and can sometimes be a little naughty and need a reminder to make positive behaviour choices. The specialist and duty teachers award class eggs for ‘egg-cellent’ behaviour. The class that receives the most eggs wins the Wyatt Award at the Junior School Assembly and Wyatt goes to live in their classroom.

Collecting a further 30 Dragon Eggs, which is extremely tricky to do, will see the dragon evolve to the last stage of the life cycle, an Elder!

Wyvie is an Elder. He is wise and makes good choices. He is the biggest dragon and likes to set a positive example for others. Each week the Elders will be targeting different things we would like to see Junior School students do, like arriving to school on time or using eye contact when they are speaking. The Elders will be watching and the class that displays the targeted behaviours will win the Elder Award at the Junior School Assembly and Wyvie will move into their class for the week. They also celebrate by having a special lunch cooked by the Headmaster, Mr Barron. They even get dessert!

From the Middle School When asked to consider an article around the theme of excellence in the Middle School, my first thought was from a particular highlight in Term 3, the annual Year 7 Science Fair. Students work on an integrated Science and Mathematics project in a small group investigation designed to demonstrate their scientific reasoning.

The Technologies Prize was awarded to Riley Junk (703), Oliver Abbs (703), Jacob Simpson (703) and Charlie Loader (703).

Head of Technologies, Alan Drakesmith, chose this group because they continued to work on their rocket launcher, solving technical issues along the way. They showed great persistence and were rewarded by the launcher sending rockets up, much to the enjoyment of others.

Being able to showcase this event to not only the younger and older Middle School students, but students and staff across the other sub-schools, as well as members of the broader community, resulted in an exciting display of the excellence taking place within our Year 7 integrated program.

We often talk to students in the Middle School about the College’s Capabilities, or rather the 7Cs. These were very much on show when looking at the different projects that the students displayed and presented. Critical thinking, creativity, commitment, communication, collaboration, citizenship as well as continuous improvement were evident.

Students were aware that at the conclusion of the event, there would be prizes awarded for a number of different examples of excellence. The staff involved in working with the students are proud of how they embraced the many challenges they faced in completing the project. If you attended the Science Fair, we expect you would agree that excellence was indeed demonstrated once again in the Middle School.

Head of Science, Ian Simpson, chose this group of students because of their project’s potential for realworld application, the fact that every member of the group had a thorough understanding of the science behind the project and the group’s originality. This group had also been identified by Mr Simpson’s Year 12 students as a prizeworthy project.

The Headmaster’s Prize was awarded to Rhizobia: Charles Harkness (701), Max Ballard (701) and (absent) Adam Richardson (701).

Headmaster, Ross Barron, chose this group of students because he had recently returned from speaking to our Wesley farming community, and the group’s project was topical with an investigation that looks at soil health and nutrient levels outside the use of fertilisers.

The Arts Prize was awarded to That Hertz My Ears: Lewis McGhee (701), Riley Kelly-Cook (701), Zacharia Milieri (701) and Jorell Ryder (701).

Head of Arts, Dr Penny Reiss, chose this group because their investigation involved both music and dancing 100’s & 1000’s. It clearly brought a smile to the people watching and developed the link between music as well as physics.

The Mathematics Prize was awarded to Growth Mindset: Matthew Tang (702), Ryan McDougall (702), James Fitzgerald (702) and (absent) Joseph Mattingly (702).

Head of Mathematics, Andrew Pateman, chose this group for their use and understanding of higher-level statistical calculations in analysing results, for their presentation of bivariate plots, and for their experiment itself that explored the valuable idea of a growth mindset in students.

We took the opportunity to get to know Peter, who will take up the position in 2020.

Why Wesley?

I have always believed that Wesley is a fantastic school and a place that I would one day love to work. The opportunities presented to students at Wesley are amazing and allow them to develop their gifts and talents to become the best they can be.

What are you most looking forward to?

I am most looking forward to getting to know the students, staff and parents and working with all members of the community to set a positive, caring, cultural tone in the Senior School.

What three items would you want if you were stranded on a desert island?

A big knife, a comfortable hammock and a signal mirror.

Who is your personal hero?

My beautiful daughter Rebekah, who passed away in 2017 after a courageous four and a half year fight with brain cancer. She is the bravest, most inspirational person I have ever met.

What book has influenced you the most?

Tough question, but probably Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. It motivated me to start on my journey into educational leadership.

Sarah Stone Sarah Stone is the Assistant Head of Middle School at Wesley. She has been teaching for more than 12 years and joined the College in 2018. Previously, Sarah taught at Dowerin District High School and Christ Church Grammar School. Sarah has strong connections to the College as her partner, granddad, dad, brother, uncles and cousins all attended the College.

What inspired you to become a teacher?

I knew from an early age that I wanted to be a teacher and it was a natural fit. I love working with students and getting the best out of them. Every day of teaching brings something different and the impact you can have on many people’s lives is rewarding and something other people don’t get to do.

What makes working at Wesley so special?

As staff we all talk about the community feel that Wesley has. This really resonates with me as I grew up in the country and I hold the belief that it ‘takes a village to raise a child.’

Wesley has a holistic approach to education, which is important in developing adolescents. Katitjin is a prime example of this in the Middle School and is such a unique and powerful program. I love that our students take on the many different opportunities that are provided to them and Middle School is a good chance to try these out before Senior School.

Our students are polite, respectful and engage in discussions as you walk around the campus. The staff are a pleasure to work with and support each other, which is important and makes working in the Middle School a delight.

Outside the College, what are your favourite things to do?

I enjoy playing and watching sport. I’m a West Coast Eagles fan and I still manage to play netball with a close group of friends. I also enjoy catching up with friends, going to the beach, travelling and some gardening.

How excited were your family when you told them you got the job at Wesley?

My dad, being an Old Collegian, wasn’t too impressed when I got the Christ Church Grammar School job a few years ago. So, when I was appointed the Assistant Head of Middle School at Wesley, I decided to tell him in person on the farm. He was in shock at first and then seemed to get a little dust in his eye.

Needless to say, he was very excited for me. He has been to a few events since and particularly loved Grandparents’ Day this year as a group of boarders adopted him and gave him a tour!

Jordan Webber Jordan Webber (06-11) is an English teacher in the Senior School at Wesley. Jordan began teaching at Wesley at the start of 2017 and before that, he did his teaching practicum at Governor Stirling Senior High School and at Broome Senior High School. Both experiences were incredibly formative and helped shape his understanding of how schools can create culture and community in vastly different regions of the state.

What inspired you to become a teacher?

I never expected to become a teacher as both my parents were, so in some ways I wanted to avoid that world. It was only once I started tutoring Year 12 Literature students that I realised how thoroughly I actually enjoyed the challenge of helping students improve their reading and writing, while discussing big ideas. That sold it to me.

What makes working at Wesley so special?

Definitely the students. Working with a diverse range of students allows you to see the world from multiple perspectives and learn just as much as you teach.

I also enjoy that no day is the same as the one before it. You can turn up to work and have no idea what the next challenge around the corner will be, which definitely keeps life interesting.

Outside the College, what are your favourite things to do?

I’m a pretty big fan of hiking and conducting nature surveys across Australia. Every year, I try to find good chunks of time to recharge and go out bush, camping and exploring. I’ve been lucky enough to do birdlife surveys from Meekatharra to the Kimberley, all the way to Cairns and elsewhere in the eastern states. I can definitely vouch for this as one of the best ways to embrace a stark change in pace from our busy worlds.

Michael Crane

What inspired you to become a teacher?

I have two inspirations for becoming a teacher. Firstly, was seeing my wife, who is also a teacher, coming home from school and sharing with me the professional and personal satisfaction she gained from educating children.

Secondly, I was working in a different industry and felt it was time for a change in life direction, hence my return to university. Reflecting on my personal primary school experience, I never felt totally connected and valued as a student. As a teacher, I am always conscious of making positive and meaningful interactions with the children in my care.

What makes working at Wesley so special?

Michael Crane is a Junior School teacher at Wesley.

He started at the College as a Year 2 teacher in 2007 and it was his first teaching position.

This was after having worked at the College as an educational assistant in the Junior School, while completing his Bachelor of Education degree at Murdoch University.

What I love about Wesley is the wonderful camaraderie and culture we have in the Junior School. We also have amazing opportunities for the students and that makes it a joy to teach them. I am also continually impressed by the progressive teaching pedagogy the College adopts to ensure the best learning outcomes for the children.

Outside the College, what are your favourite things to do?

I enjoy spending time with my two teenage girls, family and friends.

Cooking is a passion of mine and I enjoy experimenting with different cuisines and sharing this with others. In my spare time, I like watching sports such as AFL and basketball. Throughout the summer months, any opportunity to jump on the boat and go squidding, crabbing or fishing is a time I relish.

The Nicholas Rowe Art Prize On opening night, Headmaster Ross Barron announced a new art prize that will be awarded at the end of the year to a Year 11 student, the Nicholas Rowe Art Prize.

The prize has been established by Gregory (67–71) and Pamela Rowe, in honour of their son, Nicholas Rowe (91-02), who sadly passed away last year.

During Nicholas’ time at Wesley he was the driving force behind many positive changes around the campus that remain today. Nicholas also had a love of art and technical design.

It was his love of art that was the family’s inspiration for the Nicholas Rowe Art Prize. The prize will provide a transformative experience for a Wesley Arts student to go beyond the Wesley campus and take part in an Arts program or tour.

This year the inaugural Nicholas Rowe Art Prize will be awarded at the Senior School Speech Day, for the recipient to attend the Melbourne and Hobart Arts Creative Arts Tour in 2020.

The Wesleyana Winter High Tea

Connected for life.

The Wesleyana Club The Wesleyana Club has been going strong for more than 55 years. President Patsy RussellLane first joined the Wesleyanas over 30 years ago, had a stint away, and then has served as President since 2014. We sat down with Patsy to learn more about this special group of friends who share a lifelong Wesley connection.

What do you do at your meetings?

Six times a year we gather for an informal and friendly meeting over a delicious morning tea. Sometimes we have guest speakers or go on behind-the-scenes College tours. From virtual reality to art exhibitions, there is always something special happening at Wesley! The Wesleyana High Tea is a not-to-be missed event on our calendar!

Tell us about the Wesleyanas I believe that Wesley College is the only PSA school to have a club for mothers of former students. Being a Wesleyana member gives mothers the opportunity to remain connected to Wesley College long after their children have graduated. It is a special way to not only retain friendships but forge new ones.

From the President The 2019 school year has flown by and we have welcomed approximately another 150 young men and young ladies into our community as Old Collegians.

Our female Old Collegians continue to grow in number and we are very keen to recognise them as part of the tapestry of the College. As such, we are currently seeking a female committee representative (and it doesn’t have to be just one), so if you are interested or know of someone who may be, please get in touch with me.

Receiving Honorary Life Membership into the OWCA is a rare award, so it is with much fanfare that I announce two new inductees. The first being ‘Mr Mathematics’ and the College’s second-longest-serving staff member, Peter Trend. Trendy, as he is known by most alumni (and we are all unsure whether that nickname is because of his surname or his snappy dressing over the last 46 years), is an absolute treasure trove of information on past students. We need to keep those stories alive, so we’ll start that by bringing him into the OWCA midst.

The second inductee is one of the longest-serving patrons of the OWCA, the 7th Headmaster of Wesley College, David Gee. We will present David with his life membership next year.

It is also important to note the deeds of members of the greater Wesley community in their various fields.

I could not attend this year's Grand Final day for the Curtin University Wesley footballers, but the OWCA was heavily represented on and off the field as we secured four flags. In hockey, the WASPs Men’s Premier League team also staged a huge surge in the final series to beat Hale School in an epic final. Old Wesleyans featured prominently in the WASPs team, with Michael (Dean) Evans (79–84) in his first year of coaching. Not a bad record, Dean!

The Wyvern Big Band has recently made The Ellington Jazz Club its home away from home with a sold-out gig in late September, and more dates on the way. Having external gigs has allowed the band to experience the raw exhilaration of live performance in front of good crowds, so the OWCA is heartened to see the Wyvern Big Band share their talents with a wider segment of our community.

I am also excited to report that we saw an increased number of alumni donations to the Mildred Manning Scholarship Trust this year. The stories of past recipients and how the scholarships they received benefited them in their final years at Wesley is testament to how important philanthropy is to the College, so I congratulate you all on a fine effort this year. Thank you.

Grant Vernon As the first non-Victorian to umpire in the Australian Football League (AFL), it is safe to say that Grant Vernon (77–81) has a story or two to share. Grant juggled his umpiring alongside his career in business, a career that has seen him hold multiple executive positions, including in Andrew and Nicola Forrest’s Minderoo Group. We caught up with Grant, who is currently a member of the College Council, for this most recent edition of the Wyvern Corner Office.

What sort of memories do you have from your time at Wesley?

I loved Wesley and I have only happy memories from my time here. Even before I started at Wesley, I was looking forward to it as my dad was an Old Collegian.

I remember the first day I came. I had been a student at Roleystone Primary so I didn’t know anyone. My nana lived 200 metres away from Wesley so my dad would drive me to school and then pick me up from my nana’s on the way home from work. As I got further into school, I became more of a boarder at my nana’s because I was doing a lot of co-curricular activities.

I had only one English teacher for my whole five years at Wesley — Jean Bamford. She was a bit of a legend.

I was a very shy child and she gave me the belief to do Debating and Drama. We had the same Debating team from Year 8 until the end of Year 12. We did well which was awesome. Wesley gave me the confidence to do things that I could never have imagined later in life.

Mum says that Mrs Bamford was the making of me!

Wesley has been so important in my life. I loved being involved with other Wesley boys through sport, like seeing Earl Spalding (78–82) at Carlton and Dean Nalder (79–83) at South Fremantle. I have always been proud to be a Wesley boy. To be honest, early in my professional career, I think there were jobs that I got just because I was a Wesley Old Collegian and there were senior people who respected Wesley or in one case was an Old Collegian as well.

What did you initially do upon leaving Wesley?

I studied Commerce at the University of Western Australia. While I was at university, I worked for KPMG during the holidays and when I graduated, I just stayed on and worked there.

It was whilst I was at university that I got into umpiring.

Gary Lethridge (77–81), who has been my best friend since school, umpired the East Fremantle juniors. He told me you could earn $30 cash umpiring a game on a Sunday morning doing Under 15s. I could umpire a couple of games on the weekend, so for a uni student it was pretty good money and we had a lot of fun.

I had always loved football and I wanted to join the West Australian Football League (WAFL) umpiring panel. Max Freeman, who was coaching the umpires down at East Fremantle, said ‘No, I want you to do another year but while you’re doing another year of juniors, we will get you some experience umpiring men’. I umpired at an amateur level, and even umpired some G-grade games. There were blokes running around barefoot and there was only one umpire back then. You would be wondering how you would get back to the car!

How did you make it to Victorian Football League (VFL) level?

In 1987 when the Eagles joined the VFL (as the AFL was known back then), I was lucky to have been taken to a pre-season camp with the two guys who umpired the Grand Final the year before in the WAFL. I stayed with Denis Rich and his family for three weeks while we were trialled in pre-season games and trained with the VFL umpires. Denis and I are still very close, and I was very lucky that I was placed with his family, as they really looked after me. I learnt a lot from Denis, especially as he had umpired three Grand Finals.

That May, I made my debut and became the first nonVictorian-based umpire to umpire a game in the VFL.

What were the highlights of your umpiring career?

The highlight that everyone always talks about — and it’s so true — is the friendship. The great thing about sport is that it is a leveller. You have a broad mixture of genuine people who share a common purpose.

There were some real characters in the game and some funny moments. I have a couple of photos at home — one where Craig Bradley from Carlton has me in a full embrace and was pretending to cry about a decision, and another that a friend at Channel 7 gave me where Tim Watson is nose-to-nose staring down at me going nuts and Tim has signed it ‘Dear Grant. You have beautiful eyes’.

In terms of individual moments that I remember the most, I always think about an ANZAC Day game (Collingwood v Essendon) when the ball was kicked straight to the goal square after the first bounce. It was a two umpire system in those days, so I had bounced the ball to start the game and then sprinted toward the goal square where there was a marking contest.

Half the crowd of 100,000 people thought it was a mark, half a free kick. It was just an explosion of noise.

Only five minutes earlier there had been the national anthem and you could hear a pin drop.

What is the most interesting role you have had in your business career?

I have been lucky to have had some fantastic roles and have really enjoyed everything I have done. I’ve spent the last 20 years in different executive roles in public companies or in family entities where the senior family member is the Chief Executive Officer or Managing Director and you become that right-hand person and adviser.

Working with families gives me the greatest pleasure because you almost become part of the family and trust has to be absolute. I was Chief Operating Officer in Andrew and Nicola Forrest’s Minderoo Group for a period when we did some amazing things like negotiating deals at the Vatican to bring religious leaders together to end slavery. That was an incredible experience.

The Mazur family with whom I am now working are wonderful people and we have a great team culture. I also own William Grant Financial Consulting with two other friends and it gives us a lot of pleasure looking after our clients’ interests as if they are family.

What lessons did you take from your umpiring career into your business career?

I really think that sport, in general, is a crash course in life. Especially in finals, when it becomes so important to people. For an umpire, it’s whether you get certain games or not. For players, it is whether you are in the team or not, or winning or not. If it goes your way or if

it doesn’t go your way, you learn pretty quickly from it because you will be surrounded by people who — even if you’re successful yourself — are disappointed or vice versa.

You learn not to celebrate too much or get down in the dumps too much — it’s just a moment in time and we move forward. You need to enjoy it for what it is. I look back on my career now and it’s not about the big games you get to do; it’s about the whole process.

The two things that I always remembered whilst umpiring is the importance of composure under pressure and not worrying about things you can’t change. It often happens in a professional context, when someone is angry or there is a disagreement.

It is important to not get emotional — just stay calm and composed. There are so many things that happen in life, and certainly in sport, that you can’t control.

Worry about what you can control and make those decisions well.

As an umpire, you would have had fans not agree with your decisions and that would be the same in the business world. How do you deal with that?

You have to make hard decisions — whether that is in umpiring, business or life. It’s important to believe that you are making the right decision for the right reasons and if you make a mistake, admit that you’ve made a mistake. The easiest way to make no mistakes is to do nothing — but that means you would never achieve anything. If you try to cover up mistakes and blame something else, no one respects that.

If I go back to umpiring, for example, sometimes it’s obvious that you’ve made a mistake. There is no point in pretending that it wasn’t! I would say to the players ‘you might be right, but I can’t change it; let’s just move on and accept it’.

Of all the things that you’ve achieved so far in your life, what are most proud of?

Chris and I have three children, Melissa, Mitchell (05–12) and Cassie, and I have always said to them that getting along with people is the most important thing in life.

You can achieve anything if you can get along and work with others. I look at my children and they’re all good people and that’s what I am most proud of. They are all grounded.

It’s not for me to judge, but I would like to think most people who know me would think reasonably well of me. Whatever your personal brand is, at the end of the day your reputation is all you really have. What does success mean? Ultimately, I think success means being a good person who is well-regarded by the people who really know you.

PICTURED William Boissevain — The Waterhole

Early this year the College received the significant donation of the painting The Waterhole, by artist and former Wesley Art teacher William Boissevain OBE. Donated by Barrister Anthony Papamatheos, whose father John Papamatheos (67–71) attended Wesley, the painting shows the artist’s signature thin application of paint to create a luminous Australian landscape.

Boissevain’s work is held in all of Australia’s main art galleries including his portrait of Sir John Forrest that hangs in the National Portrait Gallery. Private collectors of his paintings include Prince Charles, the Emir of Bahrain and former Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser. In 1978, William was awarded an OBE and in 1998 a book on the large volume of his work was published.

William taught Art and French at Wesley between 1951 and 1955 and is a leading figure in the development of Western Australian art in the post-war period. He was born in New York to Dutch parents who were serving in one of their many diplomatic posts all around the world.

The College is fortunate to have several of his works in our art collection including a series of 21 sketches of staff from 1952, which was given to Headmaster Dr James Rossiter when he retired. He was commissioned to paint the official portraits of Headmaster Roy Collins and Headmaster Clive Hamer AM, and a large oil painting titled The Wet to mark the retirement and contribution of Clive Hamer AM.

Michael Dunjey Going above and beyond

Michael Dunjey (78–90) is the founding Director of Ascent Foundation, which partners with change-making organisations and local leaders to transform the lives of the poor and the vulnerable in developing countries worldwide.

His approach to philanthropy has been influenced by his belief that everyone is called to do something good and his passion lies in supporting people to live this through example.

How do you reflect on your time at Wesley?

I had two different stages to my journey at Wesley College. I was at the College from Years 1–3 before my family moved and we spent most of my upbringing living in Pakistan, before returning for Years 9–12.

My time at Wesley was awesome. I loved it and thrived as I was very driven and competitive, especially in sport. I had a great group of mates and I look back on it very fondly.

Was it difficult to assimilate upon your return to Perth?

It was a very challenging period for me. There’s a psychological term for it called ‘third culture kids’, people who are raised in a culture other than that of their parents or the culture of the country where they were born. As someone from a first-world country who grew up in a third-world country, I sort of lost my identity.

I grew up in a Pakistani culture, so when I returned to my primary culture, I had to relearn a lot of things and fit back in. It was very interesting, the whole reintegration process. The first two weeks were tough.

I was assigned to a social group who took me in until one day I got to lunch and was told the two weeks was up and I had to go somewhere else! It still sits in the top five worst experiences I’ve had, but thankfully 20 minutes later I met two boys who I would remain very close to for the rest of my Wesley experience.

Who had the greatest impact on your time at Wesley?

I had a teacher called Jim Bausor who taught Calculus and was my middle-distance running coach.

Running was a big part of my Wesley experience, and from Year 8 I had maintained the goal to represent Wesley in the 3km at the Inter-School Athletics Carnival, which I achieved in Year 12. It’s funny what sticks with you, but on the bus ride to the Athletics Carnival, Jim came up to me and said ‘I believe in you, you’re going to do this’.

My goal had been to simply get to the race, which had already been achieved, but Jim’s words gave me a real boost and from out of nowhere I came second, in a very competitive event. From there I took the belief that anything was possible. It was a life-changing, pivotal moment for me. If you can pass on and instill belief in someone, you can have such a powerful impact on their life.

Where does your passion for social justice come from?

I believe the biggest gift I’ve been given is empathy — everything I do is from a place of empathy. The upbringing I had played a significant role too, a lot of which I can still recall. When I turned four in Pakistan, the country was suffering through both famine and a long-standing military coup. There was a man who kept knocking on our door and asking for food, who we would try to help. One day I came out to play by myself and he was lying on the front lawn; he had died of starvation.

We did what we could but there were thousands of people in that situation. Not long after that my mum and I were at the markets and a young mother had similarly died of starvation. It was heartbreaking to see a crying baby in her dead mother’s arms. To an extent, I grew up in suffering, so when I became an adult, I knew I wanted to go back and help in whatever way I could.

How did the Ascent Foundation come about?

Having a foundation was always a goal of mine, but it became achievable much quicker than I anticipated.

To give context, I was a civil engineer before retraining as a podiatrist and opening my own clinic. I had a goal that I wanted to climb Mount Everest, but it is an expensive climb. As a result, I looked at other ways to make additional income and it went from there.

I found myself getting better and better at investing, so in 2007 I sold my other interests to pursue it full time.

The profits we were generating were so beyond what we anticipated that I was able to bring forward my plan of having a foundation within 10 years. I’ve found with 99% of charities and foundations, the secondary thing they do is support projects. First, they must raise money. I was very strong on my view that if I were to have a foundation, I wanted it to be self-funded. That way I was able to honour the promise to myself to return to those countries and do whatever I could.

You mentioned Everest, can you tell us about your attempted summit?

In my early 20s I had become a competent mountaineer and a couple of my mentors believed I was good enough to attempt Everest. At the time, only 10 Australians had reached the summit, none of whom were from Western Australia, so that was a big challenge.

We were coming up to a high section on Everest with steep blue ice and were all together when our guide said we needed to stop, take our packs off and have a break. After two minutes I was still fumbling trying to get my pack off and realized my hands were frozen. I asked my friend to take my gloves off and my hands were chalky white to my wrists. It was a straightforward and pragmatic decision from there.

I looked at my mate and we just nodded; nothing needed to be said. I was in an incredibly good team and the camp below us brought oxygen and drugs to open up arteries. I wasn’t going to risk the lives of others in an attempt to push through and make it to the summit.

Not summiting Everest was tough, as reaching its peak was everything to me at the time. There was a bit of the athlete dysfunction in there — my mental state was always tied to my result. If I didn’t perform well, I would get down on myself. With Everest, I was genuinely passionate about it and I enjoyed it but not reaching the summit was wrongly tied to my selfesteem. I had three or four months where I was pretty down following the failed attempt. It still stings, but it’s no longer something I need to do. It would be fun to try again and do but if it’s something I try and fail at again, that’s ok.

How important is fostering partnerships to achieve common goals?

To me, the partnerships we create are everything.

Unfortunately, the view that a lot of people have in regards to giving cross-culturally lies in the idea that ‘we have all the solutions and our money comes as a blessing to you’. This kind of power dynamic creates a ‘saviour complex’ that needs to be addressed in philanthropy.

What advice do you have for current Wesleyans?

Don’t be afraid to take the less-travelled path. You are going to deal with a lot of criticism, but that is part of the process. Another piece of advice would be to find out what your strengths are and pursue them with everything you’ve got.

Did you know the Junior School supports Ascent Foundation programs?

‘We have raised over $4,000 to set up a school library for our sister school in Bangalore, India, through the Ascent Foundation. The pictures of the library and resources purchased with this money were heart-warming and it was lovely for our children to see how they are helping others less fortunate than themselves. In Term 4 each child decorated a pencil case and I thank families for filling these with stationery items that have now been sent to the children in Bangalore for Christmas.’ — Maria Hodges, Head of Junior School.

On July 4 the College welcomed back Old Collegians celebrating milestone Premiership reunions, a novel event for the College in recent years.

Inaugural Premiership Reunion Celebrating Premiership successes

The reunion kicked off with a luncheon which was spearheaded by special guest West Coast Eagle and Glendinning-Allan medallist Bradley Sheppard (96–08), who spoke openly and humorously when reflecting on his time at Wesley and his career in the AFL. The lunch concluded with a premiership reflection video where Joseph (Wally) Green (38–43) and Bruce Milne (55–60) regaled the audience with tales from the 1959 Hockey premiership, while Jon Ferguson (92–94) and Clayton Gardiner (94–95) relived the 1994 Alcock and Darlot Cup victories.

Post lunch the group moved to the Wesley Sports Club to watch the 1st XVIII play against Trinity College.

Inclement weather did not dampen the spirits, however, as other Old Collegians joined the celebrations.

The celebrations continued long after the final siren, as Blair Taylor (90–94) led a strong 1994 contingent off the field just as impressively as he did 25 years ago during the squad’s undefeated season.

Overall, it was a day of friendship, connection, celebration and laughter. It was great to see so many Old Collegians return to the College for the first time since graduation and leave with such positive memories about the day.
