Angel Gateaway is a small, almost hidden passageway connecting the Cheapside ( Leicester Market) to Gallowetree gate. A threshold. A place in between. I have stopped for a minute observing how many people pass by and I was suprised how many people actually use it even though it looks slightly abandoned, forgotten.
IN BETWEEN PLACES
There is a rumor that this was a former Angel Inn in Cheapside, which was during the Tudor period the most important inn in the town. It stood in front of the Town Wall, which ran at this point between Cheapside and Gallowtree Gate. The tradition is very strong that Mary Queen of Scots spent a night at the inn on her way from one prison to another.
The Leicester Print Workshop is a transformation of a 1970s former glass warehouse to create new printmaking studios, library, gallery and education spaces in the city’s Cultural Quarter.
