President’s and CEO’s Reports

President’s Report

CEO’s Report

Dear Members,

Dear Members,

Wenty Leagues is quickly developing into a destination of choice for diningout, with a wide range of options to suit everyone’s needs, including children. Since opening the new Wenty Café and releasing the Magpie Sports Bar snack menu, our food sales have increased significantly. We aim to soon better cater to the wants of our Members with our Noodle Bar which is due to open later this year.

I am pleased to announce that for the first time in the Club’s history membership will reach 40,000 during October. Membership has continued to grow through the current renovations and is a great sign of the Club’s resilience. It is exciting to consider what growth lies ahead following the completion of the building works.

We have had a bit of luck with the weather and our renovations have come a long way over the past few months. We recently opened 216 new car parking spaces on the Western side of the Club, which I am sure will be a well-received addition to the Club. Work has also started on the slip lane and entrance from the Great Western Highway, which will see access to the Club made easier for Members. Further great news with regards to our renovations is the review of plans for a new Grandstand complex at Ringrose Park by Council. In keeping with a commitment made by the Board, we plan to replace the dilapidated stand on the Western side of Ringrose Park. The all new purpose built stand will include gym facilities for the players and over 300 covered and 150 uncovered seats for spectators. Once again I’d like to congratulate all of our footballers on their outstanding results this season. We featured heavily in the Grand Finals and equaled our record by winning 12 Junior Rugby League Grand Finals this season. After 34 successful years at the Club, Eddie Chan has announced his retirement. Eddie has owned and managed the Imperial Dragon Chinese Restaurant with his wife, Winifred, since 1978. The Restaurant has been a popular choice for diners with its excellent service and great quality food. I would like to thank Eddie Chan and his team for their work over the years and wish them all the best in their future endeavors. After an exhaustive tender program, I am thrilled to announce that John Lim and John Chu will be the new operators for the Imperial Dragon Chinese Restaurant and the Noodle Bar. I’m sure we can all look forward to another long and fruitful relationship. Ian McCann President

Wenty’s Christmas Raffles are due to start on Thursday 29 November and will run over 4 weeks. There will be over $35,000 worth of prizes for Members to win in our Toy, Seafood, Hamper and Ham, Pork and Turkey Raffles. It is great to see the Club has gained acknowledgment as a leading entertainment venue and draws in some big acts for our Starlight show goers. In the coming months we have some tremendous artists due to perform in the Starlight Room including David Campbell (13 October), Mark Seymour (27 October), John Paul Young (3 November) and Akmal (17 November). Be sure to book your tickets quickly for the best seats in the house. Our Melbourne Cup celebrations are shaping up to be a great day out. Melbourne Cup Day is always an extremely enjoyable and busy day at the Club. Our Luncheon in the Starlight Room will be hosted by the popular Chris Castle. Also featuring a delicious 2 course meal, the luncheon is a great way to enjoy the races. Full details of what’s on at Wenty for Melbourne Cup including the Luncheon menu and entertainment can be found on the back cover of this Journal. New Year’s Eve at Wenty has also been finalised after receiving plenty of positive feedback from our Members last year. The Starlight Dinner Function is set to be a huge hit once again offering a sumptuous meal with entertainment from one of Sydney’s most popular acts, Abbalanche, to bring in the New Year. We’ll also be hosting a special New Year’s Eve menu in Lucido and party band One Hit Wonders will perform on the new Wenty Lounge stage. The party atmosphere will spread throughout the whole Club to bring in 2013. I look forward to seeing you around the Club. Dave Brace Chief Executive Officer

Community Wenty helps the local community

My Story, My Neighbourhood

Each year local welfare organisations apply for funding from Wenty Leagues and other local clubs through the ClubGrants scheme. Applications for funding are ranked by a Committee which includes Holroyd City Council and Holroyd Interagency representing local charities.

An Affordable Community Housing Limited (ACHL) project funded by Wenty Leagues has helped participants document life in Western Sydney through photography.

On Thursday 9 August local organisations were presented with over $360,000 in grants, of which Wenty Leagues was the largest benefactor providing grants in excess of $160,000 to 13 projects (one of which was joint funded with another club). $18,000

We wish all of the recipients the best of luck with their projects and look forward to hearing about their success.

Over the course of 5 weeks throughout May and June this year, a group of ACHL tenants participated in the My Story, My Neighbourhood project, a photography training course, under the guidance of a professional photographer. Wenty Leagues’ $5,000 grant contributed to teaching the participants how to capture the essence of their lives through digital means. The funding covered teaching costs as well as the cameras, printing for the exhibition and the production of a book featuring the students’ works. Congratulations to everybody involved on the success of this project.

Taking the stage Wenty Leagues’ Starlight Room was packed on Sunday 15 July for a special show featuring 30 talented kids showcasing Indian music, dance and the arts. The Indian Australian Arts and Film Association (IAAFA) conducted a workshop with a $3,000 grant from Wenty Leagues which culminated in a Bollywood and Irish inspired show. The show was directed and choreographed by renowned Bollywood director TS Nagabharana and his wife Nalini. Wenty Leagues’ Club President Ian McCann attended the extravaganza, and was joined by Local MP for Toongabbie Nathan Rees.

Development

The exterior of the new outdoor gaming area

Development Update New Outdoor Gaming Area Our new outdoor gaming area opened in September. This new area can be accessed via a prominent pedestrian ‘street’ within the Club that has been finished with special ceiling and lighting features. A large ramp with a stone finish has been incorporated into this ‘street’ to seamlessly join the Wenty Lounge level with the gaming floor. The highlight of the new outdoor area is a large architectural portal on the Southern side of the building which features a landscaped garden, 3m high decorative glass panels and a giant spherical copper-stained sculpture, finished with accent lighting.

Slip Lane Work on the slip lane and entry from the Great Western Highway is progressing extremely well. This entry off the highway will open in mid-November to coincide with the completion of the car park. Over the coming weeks we will see significant street scaping of this area and the installation of a large 10 metre high sign that will proudly display Wenty Leagues branding and LED signage.

Car Park Following some improved weather over the last few months, we have seen some solid progress with the car park development. A total of 216 new parking spaces were opened throughout September. If work continues to progress at the current pace, weather permitting, the majority of the car park works will be complete by mid-November. 4 • The Journal WENTY LEAGUES OCT/NOV 2012

Over 200 additional parking spaces have been opened

Noodle Bar The Noodle Bar is now taking shape and is anticipated to open for trade in late October. The new food outlet will seat 70 diners on the newly expanded mezzanine level in a casual dining setting. The Noodle Bar will be furnished with Oriental-themed, rustic furniture including thick chocolate coloured timber benches, fabric cushions and granite counter tops. The menu in the Noodle Bar will include a fusion of popular dishes from a diverse range of Asian cultures. When open, the Noodle Bar will complement the current Chinese Restaurant which will continue to trade as normal. The Noodle Bar’s structural work in its final stages in mid-September

Wenty Lounge The Wenty Lounge will soon feature a new stage and dance floor to host a range of entertainment, promotions and events. Gaming machines adjacent to the new Wenty Lounge have been relocated to create space for the construction of the stage. Construction of the stage and dance floor is now underway and is forecast for completion in midNovember. Once the new stage is operational in the Wenty lounge, the temporary stage in Lucido will be transformed into an expanded dining area.

Demolition in the Wenty Lounge before starting work on the new stage and dance floor.

The Lucido dining area will soon receive a renovation which will include new carpet, high-backed banquet seating to create privacy within the space and a feature wine display. When the renovations are finished, the Restaurant will have an added private atmosphere to create a more chic dining experience. The Lucido dining area will soon include a new toilet amenity upgrade to complement the space.

Sub Clubs

Sub Clubs DISTRICT FOOTBALL As I write this report the season is coming to the final stages of what has been an excellent year for the Wentworthville Club. NSW Cup With the final round of regular competition played on Sat 1 Sept Brett Cook’s boys finished in 4th position, which under the new Finals Series System will be a distinct advantage. Apart from one hiccup when we lost to Mounties, the form in recent weeks has been outstanding. We were successful over high ranking sides including Premiers Canterbury Bankstown 22-10, an outstanding win against the Vulcans in Auckland 64-14 followed up with a strong win against the Illawarra Cutters 36-12 who had strung together a 10 game winning sequence. We also took the points in a tough win against the Balmain Ryde Eastwood Tigers 22-20. We continued our good form against Manly at Ringrose and we came away winners 64-18 in our last competition game. The recent results are all the more pleasing considering due to the high number of injuries to Parramatta NRL players we have lost some of our regulars to 1st grade. These included Jake Mullaney and Nathan Smith who both made their NRL debut. We have relied on Wenty contracted players including Lancen Joudo, Danny Howard, Matt Hunt, Dylon Gilbert, Jarome and KJ McKenzie, Broderick Wright, Tim Wynn, newly adopted Jason Wehbe and Captain Courageous Nathan Armit, all who have accepted the challenge and lifted their games to a new level. Regardless of future results, Brett Cook can be well pleased as this side has over achieved beyond all expectations. With the return of available NRL players for the Finals the side should only grow stronger for the remainder of the Series. Bundy Cup The regular competition finished on Sun 26 Aug 2012. With an unexpected loss to Cabramatta in Round 16, Alex Chan’s boys finished in second position on the table one point behind Minor Premiers, The Entrance Tigers. Despite some big winning margins against strong opposition in recent weeks, including 72-0 against the previous competition favourites St Johns Eagles, 46-24 V Auburn Warriors, 7218 V Blacktown Workers, 52-22 V Mounties and 44-26 V Burwood North Ryde. Alex continues to look for improvement in most areas. When and if Alex finds the solutions, this team will be mighty hard to hold out in any future matches, particularly now the NSW Cup side is assured of Finals football and with the eligible Parramatta NRL players returning to NSW Cup. This should also have a flow on result in the Bundy Cup, resulting in a stronger side. The 1st week of the Finals Series Wentworthville, without any movement of players from the NSW Cup, played the strong Windsor Wolves outfit. The boys met the challenge and reversed previous results against Windsor this season to win clearly 36-16. In week 2 of the Finals Series Wenty met Minor Premiers the Entrance Tigers in what was to be a cracker of a game with the winner advancing to the Grand Final. The latter stages of the Competitions will be covered in the next Journal and on the WDRLFC website. Ron Bottle - Secretary

JUNIOR RUGBY LEAGUE The Junior Rugby League Season is over. They will represent Zone 10 in the State Championship Finals in October at Soldiers Point Bowling Club. Out of these matches Chris, Craig and Mathew gained selection to represent Zone 10 in the State Inter Zone Sides Championship. The Minor Fours Championship has reached the final stage. Sam Radanovich, Steve Lowery, Hugh Brooker and Charlie Zahra will play Norm Eatock, John Ireland, Cec Murtagh and Fred McGarry. And here’s a little bit of trivia for you all; Usain Bolt’s (the Gold medal sprinter) hobby is dominos! Happy dominos. Shirley Keniry - Secretary

FISHING CLUB’S DARWIN ADVENTURE

Wenty Leagues’ Fishing Club members Bill Mortell, Michael Nash, Charlie Looi and Charlie’s son Tim Looi flew to Darwin for the fishing trip of a lifetime. Bill, Michael, Charlie and Tim would fish from 6am till 7:30pm, and had a memorable time doing so, catching snapper, golden snapper, red throat snapper, bar cod, black tip reef sharks, Spanish mackerel, black dew, tuna, red emperor and perch. The biggest fish of the trip was caught by Tim; a 400lb bronze whaler that took all Tim’s strength to reel it in. Before heading home, the boys travelled 250km from Darwin to the Mary River, arriving at sunrise to catch barramundi. They trolled back and forth, up and down many billabongs to catch the elusive barra. The trip has made unforgettable memories for the gents. If you want to get involved in the Fishing Club and go on your own adventure, contact Club Secretary Michael Nash on 0409 030 460.
