CEO’s Report

Dear Members,

Dear Members,

Happy New Year and welcome to the first edition of The Journal for 2010.

I wish you all a Happy New Year and hope you have enjoyed a fantastic Christmas.

In my last column I indicated that due to a number of factors the Club’s proposed development in Parramatta was no longer a viable investment opportunity and the development’s future was to be discussed Ian McCann at an upcoming Board Meeting. I can now advise that at a Meeting of Directors on 27 November 2009 the Board Resolved to cease all trading and development in Parramatta. This decision will mean the closure of The Tingha Club, the cessation of planned development works on the Club’s Parkes Street site and the transfer of the Tingha Club’s gaming machine licences to the Wentworthville Leagues Club site.

Dave Brace

The Club had a terrific finish to 2009, including a record trading result for food and beverage sales in December. Whilst this is pleasing, there is still much to do and we’re looking at making 2010 better than ever.

We are working very closely with council and hope to have our Car Parking and Hospitality Development Application approved in the next couple of months.

Members will be asked to vote on the proposal to cease trading and development in Parramatta at a Special General Meeting to be held on Monday 8 March 2010, the details of which are on the adjacent page.

In February Lucido will be re-launched as an Italian Restaurant. Italian is Australia’s most popular cuisine and we look forward to Lucido becoming your favourite destination for the best wood fired pizza, pasta and Italian dishes around. To encourage you to give the new Lucido a try, one lucky diner will also get the chance to win a Vespa Scooter. See page 7 for details.

It is with sadness that Wenty lost a great Member, Dennis Cromack on Christmas Day. Dennis had served on the board of Wenty Leagues for 23 years, 15 of them as President. On behalf of the Wenty Leagues Board, Management and Staff I send our condolences to the Cromack family and Dennis’ many close friends.

The next few months are shaping up as bumper months for entertainment, with some of the most popular shows of recent years returning, along with a host of new star studded acts. Upcoming shows include Cosima De Vito, The McClymonts, The Delltones, Abbalanche, The Beatnix and the new Carpenters Tribute show.

On 12 March 2012 Wenty Leagues will celebrate its 50th Anniversary. To commemorate this historic milestone, the Board has commissioned the publication of a book documenting the Club’s first 50 years. As part of the process of gathering information for the book, I would like to invite all members that may have photos, documents or interesting anecdotes and stories to make them available to the Club. I can assure you that all items will be handled with the utmost of care and facilities are available to make copies of your items so that they can be returned promptly. Information should be marked to the Attention of Greg Bygraves, General Manager Marketing and can be left with the main reception.

I look forward to seeing you around the club.

Best wishes for 2010. Ian McCann President

Community

In the Community Dennis Cromack 1939-2009

Dennis was much more than a life member of Wenty Leagues. He served on the Club Board for 23 years, including 15 years as President. During Dennis’ time on the Board he not only built a very strong professional relationship with the management and staff but he became a good friend to many of the Club’s members & was seen as very approachable. Dennis took his passion for the Club to the next level by becoming Chairman of the North West Region for Leagues Club Australia (LCA). During his time with the LCA he not only gave Wenty a voice and highlighted what a great club we have but made many more great friends and was very well respected within the club industry for his hard work and passion for the club movement. Dennis was also a Life Member of the WUJRLFC and Patron to many of the sub clubs. Dennis’ early life started at St Bridget’s Marrickville, before attending high school at Christian Brothers Lewisham & Dulwich Hill. Dennis was a boilermaker by trade but had many jobs over the years. He was a salesman with CIG (now BOC) & Liquid Air. He also had part time jobs to support his

Timehelp Win 2009 NSW Volunteer Team of the Year The Holroyd Timehelp team have won the 2009 NSW Volunteer Team of the Year Award. With 400 nominations in the category, this is a very big achievement. Wentworthville Leagues Club would like to extend our congratulations to all volunteers involved in the program. The Timehelp award winners from the Holroyd area are a group of 26 voluntary retirees. The group lends a hand at schools like Holroyd High, Merrylands Public, Sherwood Grange and Wentworthville Public to assist students with reading, writing and other tasks. Timehelp is Australia’s premier intergenerational volunteer program. It connects retirees with young people in schools and delivers education, well-being and community benefits.

family including driving taxis and working at Wenty Leagues as a doorman, waiter & supervisor. During his time at Wenty Dennis met his second wife Sue who was working in the dining room. Dennis & Sue were married at the Wayside Chapel Darlinghurst in 1976. Dennis had four children - Jacquie, Richard & David from his first marriage and Adam with Sue, plus five grandchildren - Tom, Georgia, Jack, Annalise & Ella. Sadly in 2003 Dennis suffered a major stoke. The doctors were surprised to see him pull through, but Dennis went further and with the help of the staff at his nursing home they taught him to walk with the aid of a stick. The passing of Dennis on Christmas Day 2009 is a sad time for many as he was a true friend to all and a true icon within the club industry. In saying that, Dennis will never be forgotten as he has really left his mark on Wenty Adam Cromack

Junior Rugby League

Men’s Bowling Club

2009 saw the Wenty United JRLFC win the Parramatta District Junior Rugby League Club Championship for the 29th time since their inception in 1947.

The Men’s Bowling Club has completed 2009 on a high note. For the first time the Club introduced nominations from Sporting Clubs for players, teams and officials who were outstanding in 2009. The male Sportsman of the Year was Steve Morris, our Club Singles Champion, Pairs Champion, Zone 10 representative and Zone 10 skipper. The club also nominated a Team of the Year, Coach of the Year, Club of the Year and a “Man Friday” of the year. A week after this event the bowlers held their Presentation Night, one of its most successful in recent years. On this night two prestigious awards were presented. The Bowler of the Year Trophy was won by Steve Morris. Also prominent in the count were Gary Reynolds and John Sunderland. The Most Improved Bowler of the Year Award went to Grant Zahra. Grant was in the winning Major Fours team, played Pennants for the Club, was selected in the Zone 10 Development team and attained his Level 1 Umpires Certificate. Anyone wishing to try the game of lawn bowls, including Juniors (10 – 18yrs) are most welcome. If you are interested contact the Bowls Secretary Paul Wright 98963581 or 0403594710. We have coaching and bowls available to assist you, if you wish to try the game. Merv Wright - Publicity Officer

Cricket At time of writing, all of our teams had a chance to make the finals. A-grade recently returned to form with a fine win over Baulkham Hills, with J. Walter (6/13) and J. Gordon (83) leading the way. Our best placed teams currently are U13 /1 in 1st whilst B7, U15/2, U14/1 and U11 are all sitting in 2nd position. The cricket club picked up two awards at the sub club dinner, including Jnr player of the year and Coach of the year. Well done. The re-opening of Monty Bennett oval in March will see A-grade play in special shirts for match raising funds for the McGrath Foundation. There is a function planned for the day and we hope to see as many people there as possible. We thank the Board for the support to date in attempting to make this a memorable day for all. Aaron Martin - Secretary

Some fantastic events concluded the recent season including a day at the Races, Women’s Presentation Day, Committee Celebrations and the Men & Women’s Final Awards Dinner. Many members let their hair down or donned wigs by hamming it up with some entertainment which included poetry, singing and dancing. You had to be there to experience the performance and acting abilities of some of our most gentle and experienced ladies. We call this social bonding which gives us the edge over our competitors.

All players welcome from U/6s to A-Grade! Training begins in February. Check the website for all training information!

Squash Three of our Mens sides (Division 1,6 and 8) and one of our Ladies sides (Division 3) were successful in winning their respective Spring Pennant’s competition. Two other Mens sides were runners up (Division 1 and 8). The Finals of our 2009 Graded and Club Championships will be played on Thursday, 4 March 2010 at 8pm at the Coolibah Squash and Fitness Centre (Paton Street, Merrylands West). All Wenty Leagues Club members are most welcome to come along and watch the finals. The Autumn Pennant Competition will commence on March 8. Domino Club Dominos are played every Thursday night in the Magpie Lounge. Names in by 7.15pm and game starts at 7.30pm. We have dropped the playing fee from $3 to $2 plus we now have a $5 lucky door prize. Don’t forget the domino AGM will be held on Sunday, 21 February at 11am. There will be a game on afterwards including lunch. We hope you have put your name down for our club’s championships. Remember you can’t win if you don’t try and you’re amongst friends - so what does it matter if you don’t win. It’s the fun of trying and hoping you can put a spanner in the works for the so called one who thinks they can play!

Quinlan Shield The Quinlan Shield competition consists of four sports including indoor bowls, darts, snooker and table tennis. Most of Sydney’s leagues clubs, including North’s, Canterbury and Parramatta, compete against each other in these sports to find a winner. 2009 saw Wenty finish in 3rd position overall. In the semi final we defeated Norths, then in the final we beat Parramatta to advance to the grand final. Unfortunately we then stumbled to lose to Mounties. A great effort by all of the teams. The individual competition was then played with only the indoor bowls and the table tennis teams, qualifying for the semi final. Our table tennis team advanced to the final only to go down to Norths (unlucky for the team with Vivian Tan in Melbourne for the Australian Championships). Unfortunately the indoor bowls team lost in the semi final. If any of the four sports involved know of members interested in competing in a very strong competition, please contact either Ken Darke or myself and we will furnish any information required. Wenty Wheelkings The Wenty Leagues WheelKings are coming off a tremendous 2009 season where they reached the grand final of the National Wheelchair Basketball League. The WheelKings hosted the finals series at Sydney University Sports Centre and it was a great weekend of elite sporting action. Wenty opened the weekend by beating cross-town rival Sydney Razorbacks 98-83 in the semi-final before upsetting the more fancied Wollongong Roller Hawks 90-74 in the preliminary final. However, the championship match against triple champions Perth Wheelcats was one hurdle too many. The WheelKings 3 best players were in foul trouble in the first few minutes which allowed Perth to quickly build a lead. Wenty couldn’t recover against such a formidable opponent and eventually lost 106-73. Another highlight of the season was the selection of Bill Latham and Jeremy Doyle to play in the Australian Rollers where they won gold medals at 2 international tournaments. The team will now regroup for the Sydney Autumn Wheelchair Basketball League in March before commencing the 2010 national league in May. Michael King - Secretary

Line dancing Hot on the heels of Tamworth’s Country Music Festival, where our dancers have enjoyed the action of the National Line dance Championships, our absolute beginners’ line dancing classes start again on February 8. The 8 week course is held every Monday night at 7pm in the Wally Webster sports Complex. Whether you are single or coming with the whole family, you are made most welcome. We are pleased to see many children now attending with their parents (usually mum) and the kids attend free of charge with a paying adult. Please feel free to call Julie on 9560 0584 if you have any enquiries, or just turn up.

Our monthly social night is held on the second Friday of each month again in the sports complex. We often have these dance nights with a dress up theme, keeping it fun and friendly. Each month the line dancers also generously help raise funds for Ronald McDonald House-Westmead. Many of the dancers also donate extra time to this very worthy cause. During March we have been invited to share our line dance skills and friendship with the Condobolin Line dancers. These weekends away always create a special bond with all who attend. Seniors week, at the end of March will see our dancers performing in Chatswood by invitation of the Dogherty Community Centre. We are expecting the Lord Mayor to once again join our line ...nothing like a brush with ‘royality’ and dancing to lift your spirits. Julie Talbot

Snooker Club We recently held our AGM with no changes being made to the current committee. Congratulations to Mark Mostyn on being made a life member of the Snooker and Billiards Club. We finished the inter club billiards competition in 2nd place before entering the finals. We played Hornsby RSL in our first qualifying final in which we won 3-1. This meant we went straight into the grand final. In the grand final we faced Hornsby RSL again, and again we won 3-1. Congratulations to Mario Aguis, Dave Vassallo, Ray Hanna, Scott Maclean, Jack Tudor and Grant Pulley on winning the inter club billiards competition. All of these guys have been playing in the same team for a few years now so it was a great win. If anyone is interested in playing competition for the club, the competition will start up around March. Until then, Keep Potting Grant Pulley - Secretary
