President’s Report

CEO’s Report

Dear Members,

Dear Members,

The last two months have seen some really exciting progress with our building works. In October the new kids play area opened and in November the new main foyer was completed. Both of these projects were delivered on time and on budget and we are really pleased with the results.

December is always an exciting time at Wenty Leagues as we host some of the biggest Christmas promotions around. This year we will be giving away $35,000 worth of prizes in our famous Christmas Raffles including Toys, Seafood, Ham, Pork, Turkeys and Hampers.

The state-of-the-art play area is truly every young persons dream come true with a maze of crawl tubes, a giant double slide, computer games station and a purpose built movie room. Already we have seen an increase in young families using this facility and we look forward to increased patronage for our food and beverage areas as people discover this new drawcard. The new reception, which opened in two stages in November, now gives a much more fitting first impression of our Club. The natural stone and timber finishes look absolutely first class and are complemented by improved technology which streamlines the entry process for visitors to our Club. With these internal projects now coming to a close, our attention is focused on making improvements to other areas of the Club, in particular our main lounge areas. We are presently working through concepts and I look forward to sharing plans with you shortly. At the time of writing work on the new Western car park was progressing well with this stage on track for a December opening. When this area opens work will move to the creation of the slip lane and entrance from the Great Western Highway. On behalf of the Board I wish everyone a safe and happy Christmas and New Year. Ian McCann President

Dave Brace

For New Year’s Eve there will again be plenty of fantastic entertainment on offer with the traditional Pipe Band walk through, The Frocks playing live in Lucido and The Beatels entertaining our Starlight Room Function. As Ian has mentioned in his report, recent months have seen much activity with our renovations. Despite the disruption caused, it is pleasing to note that our trade has not been adversely affected. At the time of writing we are on track to post an improved trading result from last year. Unfortunately the threat to our future livelihood in the form of the government’s proposed poker machine reforms still looms large. Despite many Labor Ministers privately expressing concerns over the proposal, it continues to be publicly supported due to the government’s reliance on the support of a single MP, Andrew Wilkie, to maintain their tenuous hold on power. ClubsNSW has launched the second phase of their campaign against these ill conceived proposals. I encourage everyone to visit the website www.wontworkwillhurt.com.au to learn more about just what this proposal will mean for the club industry. As I have said previously, if you don’t support this proposed legislation then please voice your concerns directly with local Member Julie Owens by emailing her at Julie.Owens.MP@aph.gov.au or phoning her on 02 9689 3813. I look forward to seeing you around the club. Dave Brace Chief Executive Officer

In the Community Wenty Goes Pink

The Giving Tree

October saw the club go Pink in support of the Cancer Council to help raise money and awareness for all Australian women who are affected by breast cancer. One in every nine Australian women will be diagnosed with breast cancer by the age of 85.

Wenty has proudly hosted The Giving Tree for many years now.

‘I ♥ PINK’ merchandise was sold throughout the month of October. Friday 28 October saw club staff, Directors, Managers and floor staff alike, wearing pink and making generous donations. In total, Wenty Leagues raised over $700 for this very deserving cause. Thanks to all those who helped us raise money during October. We look forward to being pretty in pink for the Cancer Council next year.

Giving People A Fair Go The Fair Go Driving School Project is a not-for-profit program by The Hills Holroyd Parramatta Migrant Resource Centre aimed at assisting disadvantaged women, refugees, migrants, and young people in supported accommodation by gaining a driver’s license.

The Giving Tree is your chance to brighten the life of someone less fortunate this Christmas. Simply pick up a gift tag from The Giving Tree and buy a person in need a special gift. They may never be able to thank you personally, but it is a great opportunity to let them know that there are people out there who care. Gifts donated will be delivered to Community Aid, Parramatta/Holroyd Family Support and the Church of Christ Community Care Crisis Centre. The Giving Tree is located at Wenty Leagues in the Lawsons Bistro area. You can choose a tag and return your gift to the tree. Alternatively you can drop off your gift at Holroyd City Council. The gifts will be delivered in time for Christmas so please ensure you return your gift before Monday 19 December 2011.

Wenty Leagues donated $8,750 towards buying a new car for the project and contributing to the car’s maintenance further down the track. The Fair Go Driving School Project hopes 30 people a year will successfully attain a license with the help of volunteers. We wish everyone in this program the best of luck.

Development Update Foyer Refurbishment

Carpark Works

At the time of writing stage 1 of the new reception was open with the final area due to be completed around the time that this magazine is received.

Stage 1 of the carpark construction is almost complete.

With construction work on this project unaffected by the weather, builders were fast to complete the refurbishment. New travertine stone flooring was laid throughout, the sign in desk was installed and all other services including audio visual, CCTV, security, lighting and power are back to working order. The decorative, modern finish to the foyer will be a great change from what we had previously.

Close to 100 new parking spaces for visitors and their guests will be available running along the Western side of the club. Once the final stages of the new Western carpark are complete, construction work will move to creating a new entry to the club from the Great Western Highway.

President Ian McCann officially opens the new play area

Kid’s Play Area

The new Kid’s Play Area is now open! The kids can now have an even more memorable experience at Wenty. They can explore a maze of tubes that go from floor to ceiling and race down the gigantic slide. Or they can sit back and indulge in a movie in a state-of-the-art kid’s mini movie theatre with surround sound. Or the gamers can situate themselves at one of three video game stations. And the best part is that it is all sound proof. So while you are enjoying a meal or sipping on a coffee, the kids can play without disturbing your peace. All while you supervise them through the walls which are constructed of transparent glass panels. Any child wishing to play on the equipment must be wearing socks. No shoes or bare feet are permitted. We look forward to seeing you and your children enjoying this great addition to Wenty Leagues. The JOURNAL WENTY LEAGUES DEC/JAN 2011/2012 • 5

WILLY AND ROY THE MUSICAL

7PM

SATURDAY JAN 14

Frogs on Toast is comedy, cabaret, dance and show band all rolled into one. Billed as the funniest show band in Oz, this multiple award winning act will have you in stitches with a blend of great songs from the seventies to the present day. Enjoy hilarious impersonations of many entertainers from around the globe including Tina Turner, Mick Jagger, Olivia Newton John, Michael Jackson, Meatloaf and some you’ve never seen. Featuring great costumes, audience interaction and extremely bad French accents, you’ll have a ball with Frogs on Toast.

7PM

This is a celebration of the music and lives of Willie Nelson & Roy Orbison. John Robertson is uncanny in his portrayal of Willie Nelson. His manner, speech and delivery of songs including ‘Stardust’, ‘To all the Girls I’ve Loved Before’ and ‘On the Road Again’ are truly like watching Willie himself. Mark Shelley as Roy Orbison, is one of only a few in the world with the vocal range and tone who can deliver an Orbison song as Roy himself did. Seemingly effortless and full of emotion as he performs Orbison hits including ‘Crying’, ‘In Dreams’ and ‘Only the Lonely’. Tickets: MEMBERS $8 I Non Members $10 ON SALE: MONDAY DECember 5

GANGgajang was formed in 1984 when Mark Callaghan, previously of The Riptides, and Buzz Bidstrup and Chris Bailey formerly of The Angels, were commissioned to write songs for the ABC TV program Sweet & Sour. The songs became a debut album with hit singles Gimme Some Lovin, House of Cards, Giver of Life and the classic Sounds of Then (This is Australia). In 1987, tracks from the album were featured in the classic cult surf movie Mad Wax, introducing the band to a growing worldwide audience and garnering the vote of The Professional Surfers Association of “World’s Best Band”. As the band members are always busy with personal projects, it’s a rare occasion now when they perform together – but it’s always good fun and great music featuring the old hits and new. Sub Clubs DISTRICT FOOTBALL NSW Cup At the time of last report NSW Cup after completing the competition rounds finishing in 5th position were commencing the Semi-finals series. The 1st Semi-final was against the Newtown Jets and although finishing the match scoring an equal numbers of tries were defeated 34-29. With a second chance Wenty then went to Leichhardt Oval to take on the strong Cronulla Sharks on a day the weather Gods were not kind with a strong southerly blowing. Running with the wind in the first half Wenty played some brilliant Rugby League and led 30-6 at half time. However the second half was the complete reverse with Cronulla also scoring 30 points to our 4 and we were beaten by two points thus ending our year. Brett Cook can be very pleased with his team’s efforts over the season in what were very trying circumstances. Brett has been reappointed for 2012 and with Parramatta having already put together a strong playing roster a return to a Premiership is not out of the equation. After the completion of each season some players move on to other Clubs or retire. To all players involved at Wenty this season we trust that you have enjoyed your stay and we wish you well in your future endeavours. Bundy Cup I am pleased to report that Alex Chan has been appointed Bundy Cup Coach for season 2012. Alex is well known as a NRL player with Parramatta and Melbourne Storm and is well respected within Rugby League circles. Alex, since turning his hand to Coaching has been successful in winning the NSWRL conducted Sydney Shield in 2010 and the Parramatta District Junior League A Grade this season. We anticipate that Alex will continue this trend and return the Bundy Cup trophy to Wenty next season. Events The WDRLFC Awards Night was held on Thursday 29 September. you to the representatives from Board of Directors who attended and to our life members who also joined us to celebrate another year. Our Junior Presentation was on the following Sunday. All players were presented with awards and our Grand Final winners (15-3’s) were presented with their premiership winning jerseys. The awards were followed by a hamburger meal and drinks for the players and another great DJ performance from trusty Neil. All the kids really enjoy the songs he plays and the games he organises. Thank you to Adam Cromack for representing the Board of Directors and attending our Junior presentation. Dates for Registration and Grading will be finalised over the coming months and will be advertised on our website (www.wentyleagues.netball.asn.au). You will also receive details in the mail closer to the dates. We strongly recommend every player that is requested to attend grading shows up as we need to ensure all our teams are filled with players of the same ability. The competition at Blacktown is much stronger than we have previously experienced so we need to make sure we are putting our players in the appropriate teams to put ourselves in the best position possible to have a successful season. Wishing everyone a safe and Merry Christmas and all the best for 2012. Kellie Denning

NETBALL How fast did this year go? Our first year at BCNA was a busy and exciting year for all involved. Although it wasn’t our most successful year, we expected the level of competition to be much higher than our previous experience. BCNA are a very well-run organisation and we believe we fitted in quite well and warmly welcomed by other clubs at BCNA. We had one team; our 15-3’s win the premiership and 2 teams as runners up (C8 and 11-2’s). All teams received awards at our presentations which took place at the end of October. Our Senior Presentation was a great night with team and individual awards being presented, followed by a fantastic meal and a boogie on the dance floor. Thank
