Sextet

James Morrison

A message from James Morrison to the audience.

I have put together a group of the finest musicians in Australia, with a repertoire that includes both classic jazz standards and original works - The result is a dynamic musical experience. The different stylistic approach of the various members of the group provides great diversity in our concerts - Our Saxophonist is a Be Bop saxophonist par excellence, James Muller’s guitar work blends the contemporary with the traditional like no other and the percussion of Gordon Rytmeister has to be seen to be believed. Added to this, the vocal talents of Emma Pask make an evening with the Sextet something I’m sure you will not forget.

CEO’s Report

Dear Members,

Dear Members, It has been fantastic to see so many members around the Club since Christmas. I’m sure our new $5 membership has added to the numbers.

On Monday 8 March a Special General Meeting was held to determine the future of the Club’s investment in Parramatta. The Meeting heard a number of presentations, after which an overwhelming majority voted to close The Tingha Club and to sell the Club’s property located in Parkes Street. Ian McCann This decision will mark the end of the Club’s involvement in Parramatta and will allow us to focus all of our energy on improving our main premises at 50 Smith Street Wentworthville. Thank you to all of the members and sub clubs that attended the Meeting.

In February we launched the new Lucido Italian Restaurant. We’ve already received some terrific feedback and the Dave Brace number of diners is increasing all the time. There are some excellent offers for Lucido in this edition and the Vespa promotion runs until the 25th April so call and make your booking today. There are also loads of new promotions starting over the next couple of months including a fabulous Toyota RAV4 valued at over $40,000, a new Wednesday night Members’ Swipe promotion called ‘Bird in the Hand’ and a new major cash giveaway running every day in May called Hidden Red Dragon.

The decision won’t result in the immediate closure of The Tingha Club and trading will continue until around the middle of the year. All existing staff from The Tingha Club will be offered positions at Smith Street and the Club will be applying to transfer the gaming machine entitlements from The Tingha Club to Smith Street.

On the entertainment front we have some fantastic acts coming up including the spellbinding master hypnotist Peter Powers performing two shows in May and June and the wonderful James Morrison in June. We’ve also attracted a large number of brand new acts including a special show from Melbourne for Italian week and a new Marty Rhone show where he performs all of his favourite rock songs.

We continue to work closely with council on the approval process for our Car Parking and Hospitality Development Application for Smith Street and are hopeful that an outcome will be reached shortly. On 16 May we will be holding our 52nd Annual General Meeting and I invite you all to attend. The Annual Report will be made available to Members on the Club’s website www. wentyleagues.com.au on Friday 16 April 2010. You may elect to receive a hard copy of the Annual Report and you can request a copy to be mailed or emailed to you by contacting Anna Walters on 8868 9212 or alternatively you may collect a copy from reception when they are available.

I look forward to seeing you around the club. Dave Brace Chief Executive Officer

In the Community Wenty Wheelkings

World’s Greatest Shave

Wenty Leagues Club has been the proud major sponsor of the WheelKings since 2002. 2010 is to be no different with Wenty renewing sponsorship for another season. The Club’s commitment over the years has allowed the WheelKings wheelchair basketball club to compete at the highest level in Australia as well as in domestic leagues. The lower leagues provide a pathway for young athletes with a disability to build their skills in the hope of progressing to the National League and beyond.

On Thursday 11 March, Team Wenty participated in the Leukaemia Foundation’s World’s Greatest Shave and managed to raise almost $20,000. Directors, staff and Members of the club all volunteered to shave or colour their hair in the name of an important cause. While there were a few nervous faces about that night, a lot of fun was had by all.

The WheelKings head into this season as last year’s runners-up and they now aim to go one better. The youngest players - CJ Grogan, Keegan Oh-Chee and Josh Meoli - will feature more heavily in this year’s line-up and there are several more development players onboard. In a major coup, the team is pleased to announce that Team USA member and three-time All-American Jeremy Campbell will be the 2010 import. He is currently playing in Italy under WheelKings head coach Gerry Hewson and is really looking forward to making his debut on Australian soil. WheelKings captain Craig Cannane has asked that Wenty Leagues members really get behind their WheelKings this season. They had great support last year, but the more the merrier! The season opener is against Brisbane Spinning Bullets, 7.45pm June 5 at Parramatta Basketball Centre, Church Rd, Lidcombe. Check out www.wheelkings.org.au or contact Michael King on 0414 766271 for more details.

All money raised is used by the Leukaemia Foundation to fund free services to support patients and families living with leukaemias, lymphomas, myeloma and related blood disorders. It also funds blood cancer research to find better treatments and cures. The Club would like to thank all who participated by either shaving or colouring their hair. A big thankyou also goes to those who sponsored our team by donating generously.

The Hair Shack Wenty thanks the girls from The Hair Shack (53 Dunmore St, Wentworthville) for closing down their salon on the night to carry out all the shaving and colouring at the Club. The Hair Shack would like to offer Wenty Members an exclusive discount by using the voucher to the right and in turn you will be supporting the Leukaemia Foundation.

The Men of League Foundation The Men of League Foundation was set up in 2002 with the primary objective to support former players, coaches, administrators, referees, officials and their families who have fallen on hard times. Wenty Leagues has been a supporter of the Men of League Foundation for many years and on Sunday 18 April, the Wenty Magpies will be hosting a fundraising day for the Foundation at their Round 6 NSW Cup clash against the Newtown Jets at Ringrose Park. Entry to the game will be via a gold coin donation to the Foundation and there will be heaps of Rugby League legends in attendance. The JOURNAL WENTY LEAGUES APR/MAY 2010 • 3

Sub Clubs DISTRICT RUGBY LEAGUE Not a lot to report at this time apart from saying during the off season the Club has recruited well and have larger than normal numbers vying for positions in both the NSW Cup and Bundy Cup teams and as such, both sides are expected to again be a force in their respective competitions. At the time of writing, trials for the season had commenced on Sunday, 14 February and continued for 3 weeks leading into the Competition which is due to get under way for the NSW Cup on March 14 and on March 27 for the Bundy Cup. The Annual Meeting of the WDRLFC was held on February 14. Congratulations to Adam Cromack who was awarded Life Membership of our Club. Adam Cromack has stood down as Secretary after many years of hard work and his position will be filled by Ron Bottle. Membership is now available and the relevant application form can be obtained by contacting the Football Club or at home games from the refreshment bar. A Committee has been formed with the WDJRLFC to plan and finalise arrangements for a Reunion of past players and officials, scheduled for some time later in the season. More info will be passed on when available. In the meantime past players and officials should advise the club of their contact details if not already recorded. Ron Bottle – Secretary

MEN’S BOWLING The inclement weather has greatly affected the 2010 bowls program. Three of our proposed pennant trials were cancelled because of extreme heat or rain. On February 20 we played all grades against Penrith and won 6 of the 7 matches. The State Pennant commenced on Saturday 27 February and we look forward to a successful season. Our Club Championships have exceeded our previous year’s entries. The championships have been delayed due to inclement weather. The Major Fours and Singles Championships are down to the Semi Finals and 30 entries were received for the Major Pairs. New Signage has been erected for our Major Sponsors Laing and Simmons Wentworthville, RBK Nutraceuticals, Terry Shields Toyota Parramatta and NSW Poker Machine Services and Supply Pty Ltd. We thank them all for their support. Our club was well represented when zone 10 played zone 9 for the annual Alan Buckley Shield. S Johns, C Couchman, S Morris, C Maythers and G Stuart were selected in the A-side. A Ashton, U Bendt, S Nelson, T Stokes were selected in the B-side for the event whilst D Harmer and G Reynolds were selected in the seniors sides. Zone 10 won the A-grade and B-grade and went down narrowly in the seniors to retain the Shield. Upcoming events include Minor Singles, Easter 3 Bowls Pairs, Anzac Day Turnabout Triples, Wenty Magpie 2 Bowl Triples Tournament and the State Championships commence in June with the Singles being the first event. Merv Wright – Publicity Officer

JUNIOR BOWLING We are still endeavouring to boost our Junior Membership. If there are any persons under 18 years of age interested in lawn bowls, please contact the Bowls Office on 9897 5823. Merv Wright – Publicity Officer

LADIES BOWLS Pennant Season provided an opportunity for many new and accomplished members to experience competition with members of other clubs within our District throughout March and early April. Selectors conducted many trials to arrange teams to present competitive teams. Shirley Jamieson arranged meals for both Wenty teams and visitors and behind the scenes team managers collated results. This year Wenty had teams in Divisions 1, 3 and 4. The Club 4s Championship Final was won by Evelyn Leet, Carol Parker, Ann Stephens

and Jean McAllister who defeated Leonie Wilkinson, Marcia Woods, Nancy Biddle and Lee Benson. Aileen Downing, one of our foundation members, passed away recently. She will be sadly missed by all who had the opportunity to have met her. She was a devoted member of the Cricket and Euchre Clubs and Red Cross. Aileen was an unforgettable member of Wenty Women’s Bowls. We can’t smile without her. Marcia Woods – Publicity Officer

I see that the students/ parents have been reading the club journal and have come to join us. If you would like to come and visit us and see what we do on the mat, please feel free to join us at the Wally Webster Complex on Wednesday nights. The classes start at 7pm and 8pm. You can come earlier, from 6.30pm onwards, to talk to the instructors or committee if you wish. Then you can either sit and watch or join in on the mat. In the oldest running classes in Australia, the dancers have still been enthusiastically dancing right through the warm summer months, every Monday night from 7pm in the Wally Webster Sports Complex. Dancers have not been deterred by the steamy hot weather and the cooler months for many can not come fast enough. Dancing with friends for fitness and fun knows no boundaries. Trying something new, we have recently returned from a ‘car convoy’ to Condobolin to share fun dance routines with our ‘Condo’ cousins’. Seniors week was celebrated in March, with our senior dancers helping to show others the benefits of keeping active via live demonstration and audience participation. Keep a look out on ABC’s ‘Playschool’ in coming weeks. Emily, Karina, Danielle and Mathew, just some of the children who attend linedancing for free at the club with their parents/grandparents, were fantastically featured with the Redfern linedancing kids class, all strutting their stuff. The days never slow down on the linedance calendar. Dancers have the opportunity to attend the weekly class or add to the activity by attending our monthly socials, usually held on the second Friday. For a couple of weeks during April and May we are fortunate to have Josh Talbot teach the class. Josh is a talented young teacher/choreographer who has just returned from a year overseas. He will be sharing some of the treasured routines, found while he was away. During this period, some of the regular linedance attendees will be travelling overseas and also linedancing throughout Europe. A lot of fun times to be had we are sure. Beginners term starts again on the May 17 so don’t delay. Book now for the 8 week course. To get started call Julie on 02 9560 0584 Julie Talbot

Wentworthville United Junior Rugby League Football Club Rugby League is a fun, safe and social game for all ages. The Wenty Magpies are one of the largest junior rugby league clubs in Sydney with more than 650 players and approximately 200 officials across 38 teams in the Parramatta District Rugby League Competition. This means Wenty can offer a level of Rugby League that is right for every individual no matter what shape, size or age you are. Rugby League is a great sport to play in your junior years as it offers much more than an outlet to hone athletic abilities. The junior footballers also learn life’s lessons such as respect for their coaches and match officials, respect for team mates and most importantly self-respect. Football also emphasises the importance of selfdiscipline, and encourages pride for the club and the community they represent. Most parents will find it encouraging knowing that the safety of players is of the utmost importance at the Junior Football Club. The coaches participate in “coach the coach” training days so the players receive the best possible coaching and, again, to ensure that players are playing in the safest environment possible. Don’t miss out on playing this season! All players are welcome from U/6s to A-Grade and you can register up until June 30, however the competitions are kicking off in mid April so don’t delay. If you are keen on playing this season or would like more information, please call the Junior Football Club’s Secretary, Allan McGowan, on 0419 266 591.
