The Studio

I was listening to Malcolm Gladwell’s voice on an audiobook a couple of months ago. He was saying in order to master a trade or a craft, one has to put in at least ten-thousand hours. I started wondering how many hours I’d logged sculpting. I figured I had spent somewhere around sixteenthousand hours during the last eight years in the twohundred-forty square foot building in the backyard. Snapshot of the It was a dark windowless cave with an uneven asphalt studio floor, and a home to nineteen feral cats. Perfect. I full of work. figured I could clean it up, evict the cats, put in a couple .. Sometime in winter 2010. windows and make a go of it. The new windows were .. over my head because the concrete block and wood Waymaker structure was tall for its small footprint. I couldn’t see Steel & Gypsum out of it at all. At first this seemed a little closed in, 7’ but as I started working there I realized how nice it was to be tucked away from everything. I like to work in solitude and though the studio was impractical in almost every way, the isolation lent itself well to what would amount to a surprising output of sculpture. In the end, it got to the point where there just wasn’t any room for my actual person, and it was time to take on the challenge of building a bigger space to work in. I don’t know that I’ve mastered anything in the old studio but here is a selection of work that was made there. Thank you for looking. Emil
