AUDIO VISUAL AND ACOUSTIC MEASUREMENT

COLLEGE OF MATERIAL SCIENCE, SHANGHAI TECH UNIVERSITY Shanghai, China Constructed 2016 SIZE 74,322 square meters (8 buildings total) DESCRIPTION The largest of the colleges, Material Sciences is comprised of a wide range of research disciplines. While interdisciplinary work is at the heart of contemporary scientific pursuit, Identity is also an important requirement for each of the disciplines. These needs, and the potential requirement for varying laboratory types, led to the development of separate structures, each with its primary entry, to house the academic and research Departments.


THE ATRIUM

DAYLIGHT

While the need for Departmental identity is served through the development of separate structures, the requirement for interdisciplinary connectivity is fostered in the Atrium, placed contiguous to The Gallery and a hub or interactivity anchoring the western research buildings. The Atrium provides pre-function space for primary lecture halls found immediately adjacent and a set of meeting spaces that will serve the wider research community.

The design of the Community Commons and First Year Residence Hall leverages the critical mass of the project including shared campus outdoor spaces to integrate student life into the center of campus. Planning, massing, and the interconnection between indoor and outdoor spaces are shaped to build community. A complimentary exterior expression further establishes a sense of place that draws on the beauty of the surrounding region to create a dynamic center of student activity within the core campus.

The South Campus Master Plan is informed by a range of local, urban and environmental issues, including the existing Providence Saint John’s and adjacent buildings and uses, and climate conditions.
