In the fifteenth century the great Italian inventor Leonardo da Vinci designed and built the world's first hang glider and made several attempts to fly it from a hill near Florence. Most of his attempts are believed to have been unsuccessful, but in a TV biography of Leonardo aired during the 1960s he was quoted as writing:

their first flight and the one thing they all have in common is the big smile afterwards." So next time you look up and see a distinctive triangular wing in the skies over Stratford and Warwick, give James and fellow-instructor Gareth a wave!

Once you have flown You will walk the earth With your eyes turned skyward. If the quotation is genuine, James McCafferty, Chief Flying Instructor (CFI) of Microflights Flying School at Long Marston Airfield near Stratford-upon-Avon, believes it may be evidence that at least one of Leonardo's early attempts at human flight was successful. "The emotion in those words," says James, "comes from someone who has actually flown and will never forget that incredible rush of apprehension, excitement and pure elation that you get as you lift off from the ground." Enthralled by his own first flight in a microlight in the early nineties, James became a microlight flying instructor in 2000 and established Microflights, his own flying school, two years later. Based at Long Marston Airfield just south of Stratford, and with two instructors, Microflights provides Microlight Pilot's Licence training and a menu of "taster" flights ("trial flights") for people to experience for themselves what James refers to as the "sheer magic" of microlight flying. " A microlight trial flight of 15, 30 or 60 minutes is the perfect gift for birthdays, Christmas and special occasions," says James. "In the last ten years we've taken several thousand people on

After WWII, the Government encouraged exports to America, to earn dollars to pay off the national debt. Leonard Lord, Managing Director at Longbridge, thought he could increase sales by producing a sports car, as this would widen the range offered to the American market. Although the basic shape was drawn by Leonard Lord, Dick Burzi translated the sports car into proper drawings. As we would say today, it needed the ‘WOW’ factor, so there was plenty of chrome and a streamlined shape. To keep costs down, the current mechanical components from the A70 Hereford were used. In July 1948, having been run-in locally, the A90 Atlantic set off across Europe, along with an A70 Hampshire prototype, returning in about three weeks with over 5,000 miles on the clock. This new Austin car was the star at the 1948 Earls Court Motor Show, the first show for ten years because of the war. It had many new standard features; for example, an adjustable steering column, an EKCO

radio, along with a heater. By the touch of a switch, the hood could open or close in under 25 seconds. The hard-top Atlantic (or Sports saloon as it was also known), made its debut at the 1949 Earl's Court Motor Show. This model had more room in the back, and ventilation was improved as the central section of the rear window could be wound down, quite a novel idea. Although the A90 Atlantic was aimed at the American market, surprisingly only 350 were delivered. The best market became Australia, which imported 821. Production ceased in 1952, with a total production of 7,981. By John Baker For more information visit and share your memories.

Allens Cross Community Centre has a long and proud history being the first community centre of its kind to be built in Birmingham in 1931 and amongst the very first to be built in Britain.

Cadbury and thanks to his efforts and the help he received from local residents, the first Community Association in Birmingham and almost the first in the country was born in 1931 with a brick built hall situated in Tinkers Farm Road. Allen’s Cross residents can be very proud to have been associated with this pioneer movement which in the next 20 years was to be copied all over Britain. The hall consisted of a large room with a stage, two committee rooms and toilets with a grass tennis court, small Bowling Green and an outside hut at its rear.

Allens Cross Community Centre ©1932

The story of Allen’s Cross Community Association really began with the building of a large estate of 2,161 houses by the City of Birmingham in the vicinity of Allen’s Cross Farm at Northfield. At that time, huge municipal estates were being built by Local Authorities on the outskirts of large cities and the two largest in Birmingham were Kingstanding and Allen’s Cross. The new housing being provided was a vast improvement on that of the inner city slums from which most of the tenants came, but Local Authorities failed to provide any community or recreational facilities on these estates. Apart from public houses, churches and schools there were no public meeting rooms, no playing fields and no centres at which a community spirit could be built. So a group of volunteers decided to form Community Associations with Community Halls on these two estates. This development aroused the interest of an important local benefactor, George

The community centre has had its ups and downs over the years, but due to the work of some dedicated volunteers it continues to thrive today providing a range of services for local residents. Thanks to a grant from the Big Lottery, the buildings were refurbished three years ago. The new state of the art centre includes two halls, both with disabled access, extensive grounds and a large car park. It includes a range of up-to-date facilities suitable for a variety of community activities, wedding receptions and other celebrations, teaching, training and meeting rooms.

However much effort you make with your garden, you can be sure that there will still be a few things that look awful. You may have made (or hope to make) beautiful borders, sensational shrubbery and lots more besides, but how do you cope with those things you just cannot seem to hide? A washing line: It may be essential but it rarely adds to the appeal of the garden. If yours is like mine and consists of two large poles with a line between them, try growing a pretty climber up the poles. If you use a self clinging plant such as variegated ivy it will do its own thing without any form of additional support. Alternatively make a chicken wire, trellis ‘box’ or frame around the posts and then allow the climber to scramble up, using plant ties if necessary too. Summer flowering clematis will look great or you could make a seasonal display for summer only using pretty climbers such as sweet peas. If you do use one of the more vigorous climbers then be prepared to do some intermittent pruning to ensure that it does not use your washing line as a plant support. Garden buildings may be useful but all too often they are also a real eyesore. Sometimes a thorough scrub of the walls will do the trick, or why not make a feature out of the shed or garage and re-paint it perhaps using a masonry paint or wood paint that tones in with existing garden structures, the colour of your window frames or perhaps simply a colour that

tickles your fancy. Consider erecting a trellis on one or more of the vertical surfaces and grow a selection of favourite climbers up it to make an even more attractive feature. If the garden is inclined to be a little gloomy then it helps if you paint any surfaces such as garage or shed walls with a paler colour – it is amazing just how much light this will bounce back into your garden. Heating fuelled by gas from a huge cylinder or oil from a large green tank, I’m the owner of one of the mammoth green metal tanks and as much as I enjoy a well heated house I detest the tank and because it has to be sited in an accessible position so it can be re-filled with relative ease, you cannot lose it in the depths of the garden. I use hazel wattle hurdles to hide ours, which are perfect as they also match with the adjacent boundary fence. You could use standard fence panels in the same way and again planting them with climbers or scramblers will help. Whatever you do, make sure that you check on it from time to time and remove excessive climber growth so that the tank remains accessible.

Is it the neighbouring garden that harbours the eye sore which makes you want to retreat back into your house? Something nasty next door is of course even harder to conceal but why not add a layer of trellis to the top of your existing fence and then use climbers once it is in position. Hold the trellis in position using batons of wood attached to the existing fence posts or special post-joining metal sleeves that you can buy from your fencing supplier or garden centre. Trellis is available in a range of shapes and need not be straight edged so you can create a range of different looks to suit your gardening style. Another option is to erect a pergola or arch to obscure or break up an unsightly view or the eyesore in their garden and adding plants will help to add a bit more height and soften the outline.

If you combine some of your favourite flowering climbers with some evergreen planting too, you should even achieve good effects during the seasons when the leaves have fallen from many plants.
