Singing, is it really good for the soul?

They say that singing is “good for the soul” and surely all of us have enjoyed singing at some point; at school, with a hairbrush in front of the mirror, or belting out your favourite songs in the shower. But do you feel different when you sing with others? Of course, many of us sing in groups already; at church, birthdays or a football or rugby match for example. Throughout history and across the world people come together to connect through singing.

It’s proven that singing releases endorphins; the "feel good" hormones which improve our mood, lower stress, reduce depression, alleviate pain and enhance our sense of wellbeing. It also improves mental alertness, memory and concentration, as it requires you to engage your brain and focus on multiple things at once.

That’s what the science says, but what do members of local choir, Somewhere 2 Sing, think;

“I’m so glad I joined, having worried about whether I’d be good enough for over a year. I have made some lovely new friends and improved my physical and mental health in the process.”

“I look forward to my choir night every week and the buzz I get from singing as part of a group can’t be beaten.”

“I’m quite a shy person, so it was a big deal for me to join. It's extremely uplifting and if you enjoy singing it's a great way to learn songs and meet people.”

There are several Somewhere 2 Sing choirs running across Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire every week, there is no audition or singing experience necessary and your first session is free. The choir is always working towards exciting new opportunities, with recent experiences including a flash mob at Kings Cross station, performing at Disneyland Paris and recording an EP at Abbey Road Studios! The St Albans choir launch party is on Wednesday 4th September 7.30pm - 9pm
