o ride these ziplines, you have to sign off a waiver for your life.

However, Richard’s bark is worse than a snakebite.

Tunnel Ziplines’ guides are certified and the ziplines are checked daily and meet ACCT (Association for Challenge Course Technology) standards.

Owner Richard Kelley happily recites the Gladiator quote “nos quisnam se morior te salutant”– those who are about to die we salute you — before he sends you to the Gallows, the final zipline of your tour. It’s one of the fastest in North America, approaching speeds of 60 mph after dropping 880-feet off the face of a cliff.

“Our most serious injury was a broken nail,” said Collin Delong, a zipline guide and Wenatchee native. Tunnel Ziplines’ only casualty is the occasional cell phone from those unwilling to part with their mobile devices, even after being warned, but these lost souls are usually found in the grass below.

Once you’ve been “diapered-up” in harnesses by Tunnel Ziplines’guides and warmed-up on the practice line, you’ll hop on a van to begin your tour with Richard’s commentary that would sink any Jungle Cruise guide’s boat. While you travel across the property, inching closer to your doom, Richard hands the guides, “hitchhikers he picked up this morning,” a roll of duct tape for some last minute repairs and warns guests that they have entered “rattlesnake country.”

With the tour’s personal touches and glimpses into Chelan’s history, you won’t only be contemplating your last will and testament. Richard takes you inside a teacher’s cabin from 1908 that’s the size of a modern walk-in closet where you can appreciate furniture from the time period and the special back door, raised higher than the front door so the teacher could wander outside after a heavy snow. The cabin was preserved and brought to the property by one of the teacher’s former students.

It’s not surprising that Richard is a good storyteller — he was a successful attorney and has published a book, “Deathstroke.” Apparently John Richardson, an Academy Award-winning visual effects supervisor with the Alien and Harry Potter movies on his resume, was interested into developing Richard’s book into a movie.

“He had learning disabilities and she helped him a lot,” says Loretta Kelley, Richard’s wife and business partner.

From a rocky cliff, you’ll get a spectacular view of the Columbia River and a glimpse of the pre- Knapps Hill Tunnel road that Loretta’s great grandfather helped build.

The road was often treacherous — pioneers were afraid of losing their wagon (and their cookies) over the cliff while going over a rock they called “the hump.”

give three different zips a try, the speed increasing with each ride. This allows you to have a thrill while still having time to take in the amazing views, perhaps even a bear sighting.

The view that Richard shares with guests today is the same that took his breath away in 2010, filling him with a gust of wind that blew him straight into the real estate office. “There’s nothing like sipping a glass of wine here and watching the sunset,” Loretta says.

When faced with the Gallows and the expansive view, it’s easy to be overwhelmed by the big things. However, it’s the little things that make Tunnel Ziplines special. A guy from Wenatchee proposed to his wife from the property’s lookout point, the cars have names like Vincent Van Go and Sparky, and a willow goldfinch named Delilah, rescued by Loretta’s granddaughter Madeline, calls Tunnel Ziplines home.

The ziplines didn’t sprout up like trees from the ground, but the land inspired their creation. After spending a day hiking with a friend and discovering more beautiful views after every summit, Richard had a revelation when the tiredness set in — “Wouldn’t it be cool if we could just zip from one cliff to the other?”

Plus, Richard and Loretta didn’t want to just sit and wait for their Castle Vineyards to be ready. They took a plunge, similar to the dropped-stomach feeling zipliners get after their feet leave the platform. In the summer of 2012, the Kelleys proudly opened four ziplines and welcomed their first brave customers.

keep in mind that an 87-year-old grandma went ziplining recently. “ We were more worried about it than she was,” Loretta says. “She just wanted to do it again.”

summer/fALL highlights The 2015 summer & fall seasons are quickly filling with events unique to the area and boasting local flavor.

This weekend, August 27-30 is the North Central Washington Fair in Waterville. It’s four days of fun, including horse racing, rides and carnival games, plus food you can only find at the fair.

Highlights include a concert by country star Joe Diffie on Friday, Aug. 28 at 8pm. Get all the information from the fair program online at wenatcheeworld.com/ncwfair/2015/.

The fairgrounds in Waterville are approximately 35 miles from Chelan via Hwy. 97 and Hwy 2 East.

On September 12th, this area is host to the 14th annual Lake Chelan Shore to Shore Marathon, Half-Marathon and 10K runs. Presented by the Lake Chelan Chamber of Commerce, the race benefits Chelan and Manson High School teams and programs, as well as the local chapter of Girls on the Run. Lace up your running shoes and register at lakechelanmarathon.com.

Later in September it’s the Lake Chelan Valley Hydrofest on the weekend of September 26-27. This event takes place at Manson Bay Marina, featuring 10 classes of hydroplanes and flat bottom boats. Racing begins both days at 11am, and includes local vendors, business specials all weekend long and lots of fun.

In October, the first two weekends of the month are dedicated to the Lake Chelan Crush Festival. Celebrate the grape harvest and watch the grapes as they tumble through the press and taste the raw juice. Wineries throughout the Chelan Valley have events, dinners and special tastings, October 3-4 and 10-11. Details are at lakechelanwinevalley.com.

Classic cars will be showcased on the shore along with Vintage Unlimited Hydroplanes from the Hydroplane and Raceboat Museum in Seattle, Vintage Inboard ‘Limited Class’ Hydroplanes, and Antique & Classic Mahogany Runabouts from the Golden Era of pleasure boating.

Hydro exhibition races will begin early Saturday morning, plus there’s a classic boat parts swap meet, wine barrel furniture, delicious food booths or enjoy the action from the beer & wine garden.

It may appear that the vineyards have taken over the area, but apples are still a huge crop in the valley. On the weekend of October 10-11, celebrate Cider Fest at Orondo Cider Works. It’s fun for the whole family, includes Hard Cider tasting for the grown-ups, music, bounce house and field games for the kids and bin train rides with Farmer Chuck for all. Back for a second year, the Manson Summer Nights Concert Series returns with an amazing lineup of artists performing their own new and original music from a variety of genres. The next concert will be Sunday, September 6, a benefit concert for this region’s fire victims.

Only a 45 minute drive from Lake Chelan, Gamble Sands golf course in Brewster is rated at the top of its game

Voted Golf Magazine ’s Best New Course in 2014, Gamble Sands in Brewster is a must-see during a visit to Chelan, even if it’s just to enjoy a meal.

“We were only open three months and it came out as the 73rd best golf course in the world,” general manager David Christenson said, “which is pretty stunning after a three-month operating season.”

According to Christenson, the scenery at Gamble Sands stands out, with sweeping views of the Columbia River and North Cascade Mountains.

The 18 hole course is also contoured in the player’s favor — Christenson said it’s more likely for a ball to roll on to the green rather than out into the fairway. Or worse, back toward the golfer.

If visiting during summer, Christenson said extra water and sunscreen are

necessary. “It’s built on 300 feet of sand and there’s not a tree out there,” he said.

There isn’t much shade to take cover under, so cooling off may only be possible with the use of a golf cart, Christenson said.

The grass is all fine-fescue, Christenson said, so it plays “firm and fast.” The designer, Scotland-native David McLay Kidd, built the course with speed slots so certain shots would catch the slopes and gain more distance.

If you are on vacation in the Chelan area, it wouldn’t be permitted to necessarily wear your lake clothes to the golf course. Collared shirts are required. And, if you plan on wearing shorts, the hem can be no more than four inches above the knee.

If golfing isn’t necessarily your idea of a vacation activity, Christenson said the Danny Boy Bar and Grill is a big hit among visitors. “That’s not only popular with golfers, but people

from Wenatchee, Chelan, and the surrounding area,” he said.

Or, maybe you’re looking for a nice place to shop. “Most people come in and say, ‘This is the best pro shop I’ve ever seen’,” Christenson said.

Nice clothing is required in these areas, too.

Gamble Sands also offers golf lessons.

It’s $65 for a private lesson. Golfing costs anywhere from $85 up to $160, depending on the day of the week, season, and whether golfers choose to walk or ride a cart, Christenson said.

The course also offers private caddies, which cost up to $100.

Rental equipment is available as well, Christenson said, at $50 per set. All prices include tax.

Lake Chelan marathon ready to make its 14th run RunWenatchee.com MANSON — The Lake Chelan Shore to Shore Marathon, Half-Marathon and 10K will go off for the 14th time when runners toe the line on Sept. 12 and head out on the picturesque course.

As the name implies, marathoners and half-marathoners travel from the south shore of Lake Chelan to the north shore and the event’s finish along the lake in Manson. The 10Kers start on the north shore near Chelan and also finish in Manson.

The event, which is expected to attract 600 runners for the third consecutive year, is presented by the Lake Chelan Chamber of Commerce and put on by RunWenatchee, a company that has held numerous other races in Chelan County over the past several years. The race benefits several local youth groups, teams and programs in the Chelan, Manson and Wenatchee Valleys.

“Our volunteers are the best. They really make this event truly shine,” race director Joel Rhyner said of the 150 people who will be supporting runners on the course and at the finish area.

“Many of the volunteers are part of the local youth groups, teams and programs that directly benefit from this event, so that makes it even more special.”

In the running community, Shore to Shore is known for its scenery — numerous views of the lake, vineyards and the Cascade Mountains await runners as they move around the lake.

The marathon portion also is one of the last Boston Marathon qualifiers in the Pacific Northwest.

“We’ve had hundreds of runners take

advantage of this distinction in past years as they attempt to quality for the world’s most-celebrated long-distance running event,” said Steve Maher of RunWenatchee.

As in past years, Shore to Shore has partnered with the local wine industry to complete the experience for participants. Pre-race packet pickup and dinner will be held Sept. 11 at Vin du Lac Winery in Chelan. In addition, all marathoners will receive commemorative wine glasses.

The Lake Chelan Chamber will again host a beer garden at the finish line in Manson.

Online registration at lakechelanmarathon.eventbrite.com closes at midnight Sept. 10. People also can register in person from 4 to 8 p.m. Sept.

11 at Vin du Lac Winery.

Each marathon, half-marathon and 10K participant will receive chip-timing, a Greenlayer technical shirt, a finisher’s medal, and a goody bag. A free lift ticket from Mission Ridge Ski & Board Resort will be inside every 12th goody bag.

The event offers bus transportation to participants from Manson to the starting points for the marathon, half-marathon and 10K. For more on when the buses depart the morning of the race, please visit lakechelanmarathon.com/.

The three courses remain the same, with traffic control measures and flaggers in place at bottlenecks. There will be some traffic delays, particularly on the Chelan-Manson Highway near Rocky Point, as lane closures will be in effect for runner safety. Motorists should be aware that there will be runners on the roadways around the south and north shores between 7 a.m.
