THE GREETER Newsletter of the Florence Welcoming Club Now in its 26th year, the Florence Welcoming Club introduces newcomers to one another and helps them become involved in the community. If you are new or mostly new to Florence, we welcome you and hope to get to know you. The next meeting is on Tuesday, February 5h at 7 pm at the Lutheran Church of the Incarnate Word, 1900 Second Loop Rd. For more information, contact one of our officers listed on page 2. A Message from the President: Greetings Everyone! Again, I struggle to get this newsletter out to the membership before the end of the month. March’s newsletter will be an equal challenge since February is a short month. At this month’s meeting we will hear from Ray Reich, the Florence Downtown Development Manager, about the many exciting things happening in downtown Florence. Those of you who go the Florence Little Theater, Performing Arts Center or the Art Trail Gallery have surely noticed all the activity downtown. Don’t miss a chance to hear about the strides that have been made to improve our community. Our newsletter used to feature Operation Write Home in which member Karen Herbert participated and promoted. We are going to drop that out for now and have inserted the new Prayer & Meditation Group that Jane Graffeo has started. If you are interested in Operation Write Home, you can reach them at: Several of our members, myself included, have tried line dancing lessons at the Carolina Ranch House 4732 W. Palmetto St. on Tuesday evenings from 7-9pm. For the modest price of $5 you get not only a work out but have a fun time trying to stay in step. Next month our featured speaker will be Joan Billheimer the Community Development Officer with First Reliance Bank in Florence. Through Joan, First Reliance and Hilliard Lyons have sponsored our brochure for many years. It will be great to meet her and give her an opportunity to speak to our membership on March 5th.

This Month’s Speaker: Ray Reich (pronounced “rich”) is the Downtown Development Manager for the City of Florence. In July of 2011,Ray started in this position. Previously Ray was the downtown development manager and the director of growth and development in Sumter for 10 years where he presided over a dramatic turnaround in Sumter’s downtown. Reich is a West Virginia native who came to Sumter some 30+ years ago when he purchased a radio station there. He eventually owned three radio stations in the state, as well as some other businesses. He sold the stations to Florence based Miller Communications in 1998. He retired for a few years and then decided that retirement wasn’t for him. He then became Sumter’s downtown manager in 2001. The goal in Florence is to take the downtown area from eyesore to eye-popping by restoring the local economy and reinvigorating what Reich calls the community’s “sense of place,” or giving the local resident a reason to visit downtown. Reich has said “The pedestrian feel that a downtown has that you don’t have in other commercial corridors, that’s when you start getting that sense of place and that sense of community. I think that people in Florence are going to first see...through an enhanced streetscape, through the buildings being improved, the facades, bringing them back to the way they looked in the late 1800’s early 1900’s. And creating those public spaces where people will want to come and gather.” Ray has planned a presentation that will give us an overview and update on the current developments in downtown Florence. It certainly will be interesting and informative. Greetings continued…

Lastly, February is Heart Month. We ask that you wear Red on February 1st and again on February 5th to our monthly meeting. We had a great turnout at January’s meeting. Let’s see if we can do it again!

Newsletter of the Florence Welcoming Club Executive Board - 2012-13 President….

Kathleen Snook 610-9826

Vice-President... Becky Fenimore 413-0202 The Florence Downtown Development Corporation (FDDC) is a non-profit 501(c) 3 organization established by the City of Florence, South Carolina to foster revitalization in Downtown Florence. FDDC is a partnership with the City and is led by a 21-member Board of Directors elected to manage the corporation’s activities, affairs, property and associated assets. FDDC staff is comprised of two City employees, an Executive Director and a Downtown Development Coordinator, enlisted to provide day-to-day operations of the organization. At the start of the revitalization process, FDDC and the City identified many issues that would serve to strengthen the state of Downtown. Some of these items included:

    

Completing an intense study of and a plan for Downtown Forming zoning overlay districts and adopting them as amendments to the Consolidated Zoning Ordinance Preparing design guidelines and principles to apply within the overlay districts Creating a National Register Historic District Acquiring underused property for redevelopment

To date, a majority of the initial action items have successfully been completed. As with any revitalization effort, the process is lengthy; however small steps are made everyday that translate into great strides for a Downtown Florence renaissance.
