THE GREETER Newsletter of the Florence Welcoming Club— 25th Anniversary Year Now in its 25th year, the Florence Welcoming Club introduces newcomers to one another and helps them become involved in the community. If you are new to Florence, we welcome you and hope to get to know you. At our next meeting Kara Adams of Hapi Balance will be speaking about her business and what it has to offer. (see business spotlight). It’s on Tuesday, February 7th at 7:00 PM at the Lutheran Church of the Incarnate Word, 1900 Second Loop Rd. Florence A Message from the President: Hey There! Our speaker, Linda Driggers from the County Parks and Recreation was AWESOME in January! I had never heard of The Splash Pad or knew about the Senior Trips or how many parks we have, not to mention all the activities for our kids. She brought in several pictures and brochures for us to see. It was really nice seeing everyone again after the Holidays and we had a great turnout at last month’s meeting. Word of mouth is the best way to help spread the word about the Florence Welcoming Club! We are advertising in several avenues like: Kinard and Koffee 93.7 (a BIG THANKS TO Tom!) radio, SCnow.com, Golden Life, Flo, Flossip, Florence News Journal, Morning News, SC Visitor and Convention Center, www.Facebook.com/ florencewelcomingclub, Brochures and our newsletters. If you would like to help distribute our Brochures please let someone on the board know! We would really appreciate it! We would like for everyone to bring a guest to our February meeting! They won’t want to miss our next speaker! How does Hula Hoops sound for exercise?? I am so excited to learn how to exercise using the Hula Hoop! Kara Adams is the owner of Hapi Balance Yoga Studio. Kara has a class on Hooping and is our speaker for February 7th. Hapi Balance is a studio that not only focuses on yoga but massage, hoop classes, Zumba, and a non-profit kids program called Hapi Kids. She is a great Yoga instructor that worked previously with the McLeod Health and Fitness Center. She also has a class called Gentle yoga that is a basic yoga class with lots of props that assist with injuries or stiff joints. (This one is for me!) Like Hapi Balance on Facebook to see the other classes she is offering. She is giving away 2 Gift Certificates for 2 classes! Come and see how we are giving away these certificates! There are tons of things to do between meetings! Pick a club and bring a friend or you can create a new club! Want to see my Hooping skills? Try Yours? Can’t wait for our February meeting! Cindy

Introducing …

Ruth Nickel 1.Where did you move from and why? My husband, Ron, and I moved to Myrtle Beach from Midland Park, New Jersey to get away from the cold and be closer to our son, Scott, and his family. 2.How long have you lived in Myrtle Beach? We moved in June of 2011, so 6 months. 3.Tell us about your family. We have a son, Scott, and a daughter, Tracy. Tracy still lives in New Jersey with her husband, Eric, and their daughter, Meghan. Scott and his wife, Kathy, live in Florence with their two children, Chris and Dana. We also have a dog, Mandy, who we rescued while living in New Jersey. 4.What activities do you enjoy doing? I enjoy walking, reading, swimming, and spending time with my grandchildren. I can't wait until the pool in our complex is finished, so I can get back to swimming. 5.How did you learn about the Welcome Club? My daughter-in-law, Kathy, is involved in the club, and when I would come to town to visit (especially during December), I would attend different activities. 6.Tell us about your participation in the Welcome Club. Because I live in Myrtle Beach, I am not able to attend many meetings or events. I do make a point of attending the Christmas dinner. I love the ornament exchange! It took me a few years, but I think I finally understand how to play the game!

7. Do you have any advice to share with new members that may help with their transition? Since I too am still trying to transition, I haven't gotten involved in too many things. Joining a club with activities you are interested in, a health club, or a church will help you to meet people with similar interests. I wish there was a club in Myrtle Beach like the Florence Welcome Club!

Welcome Ruth!

Treasurer’s Report: Our treasury balance as of 1/31/12 is $ 2,208.74. Faith Senft, Treasurer Next Board Meeting The next Board Meeting will be an email meeting. The board will reconvene in March to plan for elections and the annual auction. Email Cindy if you have any business for the board to consider: cindystafford@gmail.com

CAMP RAE Camp RAE was founded by Pee Dee residents who recognized a need for a summer program to provide therapy and educational interaction for non-mobile special needs children to replace the programs provided for them during the school months. Since no such programs of this type existed in the entire Pee Dee region, a group was formed in the Spring of 2009 to create Camp Rae. The camp includes daily sessions of physical, occupational and speech therapy. The kids are considered medically fragile so a nurse is on staff. In addition to the daily routine of therapy and classes, the campers benefit from on-site visits from music and massage therapists, puppeteers, a children’s chef and a fire truck. The campers enjoy Lynches River County Park nature trails and splash pad. Camp Director and founder Deana Strickland will briefly speak at the February general meeting about the camp. Pictured below are Bunco winners Linda Damiano (left) and Marian Wagner (right) counting their cash prizes. Also shown are Becky Fenimore and Marlene Pantos.

Hapi Balance 157 W. Evans Street, Florence Hapi Balance, the brainchild of owner Kara Adams and business partner Becky Phipps, is primarily a yoga studio but also offers massage, hula hoop, Zumba and karate, as well as a nonprofit program using the classes to help children fighting obesity. When Adams found out her business idea won the Meanwhile Downtown contest in May 2011, she said, she was excited because for 12 years she has wanted to do something like this. "I want it to be a place where people can find that Hapi Balance in their lives," Adams said. "Hopefully Florence is ready. If I don’t take this chance I’ll never know." That was 8 West Evans 7th to hear ings at Hapi

MAY AUCTION & BAKE SALE

Laura Driggers enthusiastically tells members about what Florence County Parks & Recreation has to offer at the January 3rd General Meeting

It is not too early to be thinking about donations for the May Auction. Gently used items such as household items and décor, plants, jewelry or books usually sell well. The live auction has been the beneficiary of services such as mending, locksmithing, jewelry making and special occasion cake baking. The proceeds from this fund raiser allows us to make a donation to the Lutheran Church of the Incarnate Word who so graciously lets us use their meeting room each month for the General Meeting on the first Tuesday September to May.
