Home to America’s only living barrier coral reef, the Florida Keys stretch more than 200 miles; beginning with Virginia Key near Miami, and ending with the uninhabited Dry Tortugas.
and Marina at Holiday Isle (Mile Marker 84), selfproclaimed home to the Rum Runner cocktail. No visit to the Keys is complete without venturing all the way down US 1 to Key West. With Ernest Hemingway’s six-toed cats, the Mel Fisher Maritime Heritage Museum (complete with treasure from sunken ships!), the Southernmost Point in the continental United States, the adventures of Duval Street nightlife and more, Key West is not to be missed! Key West offers plentiful opportunities to dive, snorkel, sail and laze around too. Key West is also home to both the southernmost winery and the southernmost brewery in the United States. Watch the sun rise on one side of Key West and watch the sun set on the other – with so much to do in between.
In between is a chain of islands populated by equally colorful people, flora and fauna. To live in the Keys is to be a character – in the best way possible. Artists, musicians, fishermen and writers, from the famous to the infamous, have made their homes in the Florida Keys. Key Largo, the largest Key, is famous for the 1948 movie of the same name, starring Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall. Key Largo has beautiful resorts and is close to both John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park (102601 Overseas Hwy.) and the Everglades, making it an ideal spot for kayaking, snorkeling and diving.
Throughout the Keys, great food, often featuring fresh local seafood, abounds. Don’t miss the state parks, campgrounds and these popular points of interest: Theater of the Sea (Mile Marker 84.5), Crane Point Museum & Nature Center (Mile Marker 50) and Bahia Honda State Park (Mile Marker 37).
Moving south, Islamorada, known as the Sport Fishing Capital of the World, is the perfect place to launch a sport fishing trip and take advantage of the plentiful game fish off its shores. The less energetic may choose just to loaf at the World Famous Tiki Bar at Postcard Inn Beach Resort
