Our Chair

It is an honor to address and welcome 2011 as your Chair for the West Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. Reflecting on 2010, our Chamber has rebounded on several fronts that have certainly surpassed our entire board’s expectations, thanks to the strong business and community support which is the foundation of our mission. I am also particularly proud of our new staff team who have brought a welcome spirit of excitement in energizing our Chamber’s outreach. 2011 poses exciting new challenges that will certainly benefit you. My main objective will be to develop our incoming board of directors who come to us with diverse industry backgrounds and join us with great enthusiasm. Our intent is to guide and serve our membership with tools that will support you, which should translate into better, sustainable business performance. We are also excited to be introducing a new, tiered membership structure that will better fit your needs and certainly provide a better value and return for your membership dues. Our key role is the “business of businesses” in addition to advocating our mission to strengthen the community by assisting you in achieving your full business potential. Your success is our success. Keep us informed of how we are doing, come attend our mixers, networking venues and educational opportunities to make your business or company sharp and most prepared for today’s savvy customers. A Message From Our CEO

Thanks to Our Renewing Members

West Hollywood Chamber of Commerce has been a strong and successful organization with a variety of programs and events designed to benefit the business community and it’s Membership. It has shared many successes along with some difficult times in its 90-year history. The past couple years of hard economic times has forced the Chamber and its business community to reevaluate business strategies, marketing and programming.

We are not alone. Businesses and Chambers across the country have similar experiences with new demands from constituents for what their businesses require to remain operational. We are seeing a new trend and a shift in how Chambers provide value for their members and how to assist commerce to thrive in their communities. The Chamber has utilized the same methods for many years to great success. With the world’s new economic structure, our organization now seeks new concepts and demands from our business sectors to meet these new trends. Besides providing a strong voice in advocacy and political action, we are developing and implementing exciting promotions and programs highlighted inside these pages of West Hollywood WORKS.

West Hollywood Chamber of Commerce 2011 Programs The West Hollywood Chamber of Commerce has rolled out a new business plan for 2011. Besides increased advocacy and business development, the Chamber will put more emphasis on promotions and programs that drive traffic for members. The mission of the Chamber is to support and advocate for a community environment where commerce can flourish. COMM U N IC ATIO N S Weekly WRAP The WRAP will have a new look and will reach over 2,000 registered subscribers who have “opted in!” Redesigned to accommodate new advertising opportunities and distinct sections, this online newsletter is emailed every Wednesday with current information on Government Affairs, Chamber Events, Member Spotlights, Member Announcements and City News. Information touted in the WRAP is also placed on Facebook for thousands of fans and friends who “like” us! West Hollywood WORKS Produced quarterly, this four-color, glossy, 16-page printed newsletter is distributed to 2,000 recipients. 1,000 copies are mailed via the postal service and 1,000 are distributed to various locations around West Hollywood. Chock full of relative info, Members have opportunities to advertise or insert promotional information to entice potential customers. A PDF is also available online for those curious Chamber rubberneckers. West Hollywood Facebook Page They told their friends and those friends told their friends and now we have lots of “Friends and “Fans.” Friends keep coming to our fan page and Facebook is a valuable platform for Chamber members for distributing news and touting activities – easily accessible and shareable.

Why wait for the WRAP and when you can get it LIVE! PROGRAMS Small Business Seminars Last fall the Chamber launched its very successful series WEHO SOCIAL. This educational seminar gave relevant information to businesses about the how-tos and what-fors of Social Media. Hosted by Multibrain who brought experts from Yelp, Groupon, Markyr Media, and a case study presentation from Nic Adler (The Roxy) and Alf Lamont (The Comedy Store) about the very successful Social Strip and Tweet Crawl, making WEHO SOCIAL a huge hit for our Members. Small Business Seminars will be a bi-monthly, brown bag lunch program, with a diverse line up of speakers and topics. Programs include seminars, panel discussions and workshops in varying topics pertinent to the business community such as purchasing trends, changes in business tax laws, or developing new marketing strategies of the Social Network markets. Whether you are a start-up company or have been in business for many years, these business programs keep companies informed with relevant information. WEHO Marketplace A place to shop, generate leads, establish new customers, create brand awareness and get to know your local community. This program will be both online and offline

and will allow you to promote your business and provide Member to Member discounts to fellow Members and the local consumer. Advertising will be available and unique incentives and promotions will be highlighted. For the offline marketplace exhibitors can showcase product and services at a tradeshow-style event. Speed Networking Referrals and lead generating programs such as Speed Networking are vitally important for Chamber Members. Speed Networking was launched last year and has been extremely successful for our members. Fresh Bites, French Quarter, Dukes, Mirabelle, and Custom Comfort Mattress have each played host to this breakfast program which meets the first Tuesday of each month. Networking Mixers Held the last Wednesday of each month, Chamber mixers are one of the most proven successful methods for networking and generating leads and relationships. This year, the Chamber is partnering Members together to enhance the overall event. These partnerships help to showcase more of our Members and delivers additional activities, amenities, audiences and excitement to our events. New Member Breakfast Hosted by House of Blues, this quarterly event brings together new members for a Chamber orientation and breakfast. Chamber representatives provide information on how best to maximize your Membership benefits. Members are provided a platform to talk about themselves and their business and have an opportunity to network.

Entrepreneur Program Many Chamber Members have home office businesses, free agents, independent contractors or sales jobs that take them on the road away from an office. The Chamber will convert its front office area to create work station cubicles providing online access, copiers, fax machines and scanners for a menu of fees. Parking Program The Chamber is fortunate to have numerous members in the business of parking. These experts have come together on the Chamber Parking Committee to assist businesses and their clientele access a comprehensive parking program. This program provides information on parking locations and options for the general public as well as information about parking requirements and compliances needed to open a business in West Hollywood. In addition, the Chamber is working with the City and its various agencies to tie into existing parking programs. Leadership Council This high-level membership provides access to various speakers and information pertinent to the business executive. An intimate lunch, hosted at Sunset Marquis Hotel & Villas, allows leaders and stakeholders in our community one-on-one time with government leadership, corporate peers and business professionals. These experts provide information on upcoming legislation and access to relative industry issues which impact our businesses. Leadership Council is a luncheon program which meets every other month.

PROMOTIONS Street by Street These promotions will be designed to drive traffic to specific areas of West Hollywood or business sectors. Using the latest and greatest of Social Media, the Chamber will work with businesses to create various incentive-driven promotions to geographic locations. Taking a chapter from Sunset Strip’s Tweet Crawl and Social Strip, the Chamber will promote its membership by engaging the public in fun and interesting activities, discounts and demos to drive spending into your area and your business. Health Fair Health, fitness and lifestyle companies will be available to educate and illuminate the consumer on various products and services available. In addition to exhibitors, the Health Fair will have demonstrations and medical experts on hand to engage the public. West Hollywood Chamber Committee Opportunities There are many ways to get involved with the Chamber to make a difference in your community by volunteering, sharing your expertise and getting plugged in. Participation on Committees offers Members the opportunity to contribute directly to the work of the Chamber and to interact with fellow Chamber Members who share common interests. Committee participation is a great way for Members to network, share ideas and further the Chamber’s objectives for businesses through Chamber promotions, support and advocacy initiatives. Governmental Affairs & Business Advocacy West Hollywood to Implement “No Smoking” Ordinance for Outdoor Dining Areas In December 2009, the City Council directed the City Attorney to draft a comprehensive ordinance prohibiting smoking in outdoor patios and open air spaces. After a year-long debate and participation on a Task Force convened by City Manager and comprised of individuals from the community concerned with this issue, the Council introduced “An Ordinance of the City of West Hollywood to prohibit smoking in outdoor dining and other public areas” on February 7, 2011 at the West Hollywood City Council meeting. (Please note: at the time this article was written, January 28, 2011, the Council had not yet adopted this ordinance.) The West Hollywood Chamber of Commerce took part on the task force to help shape an ordinance which we hoped would have the least amount of fiscal impact to our Members and were able to accomplish a few compromises in the proposed draft staff recommendation. Staff report to Council recommended the following: • Outdoor dining areas of restaurants will be included, but outdoor areas of bars and nightclubs will be exempt from the smoking prohibition. • Restaurants with varying operating characteristics in the late evening will be permitted to create smoking operation plans that allow for a designated smoking area as long as no food is served and the space has an adequate 5-foot buffer from the non-smoking area. • The two hookah cafes and two existing private clubs currently located in the City will be exempt from the smoking prohibition. Restaurants may submit a Smoking Operations Plan for City review and approval outlining when and where smoking is allowed at a particular business and how and where signs will be erected identifying no smoking and smoking areas.

The City Council directed its staff to develop an anti-smoking education campaign and explore an incentive plan that would encourage businesses that are exempt from the ordinance to prohibit smoking in their establishments. The City will also work with the region’s leading health care agencies and social services providers to inform the community about smoking cessation programs and literature. Santa Monica Boulevard Businesses Desire to Formulate Business Improvement District Businesses along Santa Monica Boulevard, between Doheny and La Cienega, and the adjacent side streets along the Boulevard, have been in discussions about the formation of a Business Improvement District, also known as a BID. The process has been spearheaded by consulting firm CIVITAS who specializes in the development of BIDS. CIVITAS has taken a steering committee comprised of Santa Monica Blvd. business owners and community members, through the process of what a BID is, how it is managed and funded, and how it is operated once formulated. Through the help of CIVITAS and the City of West Hollywood, the steering committee has been actively reaching out to the business community to inform them of the advantages of a potential BID. BIDs are aimed at increasing business activity and are a stable funding source for organizations and business owners to improve their business district.

Owners within the boundaries of the district work together to make significant improvements, attract customers, and develop the area. Funding comes from an assessment placed on business owners within the district and may be formulated and quantified through varying methods. The amount of the assessment is determined by the business owners at the formation process within legal guidelines. Funds raised must be spent within the district for the sole benefit of the businesses paying the assessment and cannot be diverted to government programs. Currently the City of West Hollywood has two other geographic BIDs: The Avenues: Art, Design & Fashion District and the Sunset Strip Business Association.
