Year 6 News Autumn Term 2 Creative Topic This half term we will be continuing with our History topic on The Victorians. Some of our work will focus on our trip to Kelham Island, where will be looking at what life was like for Victorians at Christmas time. In Design Technology, we will be investigating Victorian samplers and then the children will create their own. Hopefully in time to come home for Christmas!

Science In Science, our topic is ‘Changing Circuits’. Children will have the opportunity to investigate the different components in circuits and how these work together, and will spend some time looking at circuits in ‘real life’ contexts. Much of the work we will be undertaking will be linked to investigations too, for

example we will be investigating how wire length and thickness affects the brightness of bulbs, and how we can make motors spin faster and slower, and bulbs brighter and dimmer in the circuits we create.

In

PE , we will focus on

dance for this half term—in particular Victorian dance linked to Oliver Twist. We will explore the characters of Oliver and Fagin and think about their movements and actions.

In

M usic , we will be

developing our ongoing skills and using ICT to create compositions linked to the Victorians using Music Box, as well as rehearsing songs for our Christmas production!

focus for this half term is “Getting on, falling out”. We will also undertake work linked to antibullying during the half term.

In

Literacy, the

children will be developing their story writing skills through using story maps, mimes and writing frames to extend and improve their descriptions. They will also be developing their reading comprehension skills.

Christmas Performances will take place on Monday 12th and Tuesday 13th December. You should have received a letter telling you which afternoon and evening they will be performing.

It is our Year 6 trip to Kelham Island on Thursday 17th N ovem ber. D uring the visit, the children w ill experience w hat life w ould have been like for children in the W orkhouse, through dram a and role play activities. They w ill also learn about Sheffield silver w orkers in V ictorian tim es, and find out how rich and poor fam ilies spent Christm as. It w ould be fabulous if children could dress up in V ictorian costum es— es — it need not be elaborate but could be as sim ple as w earing some of the follow ing: Flat caps, w aistcoats, trousers tucked in long socks, or shaw ls, m op caps and plain aprons. W e w ill be sending a letter out w ith m ore inform ation about this very soon!
