How To Stop

Mosquito Bites From Itching Those pesky mosquitoes; you've been bitten and have tried everything to get those annoying bites to stop itching, but it has set in and is driving you crazy!

Rest assured that there are numerous ways to treat the mosquito bite to cure the itch.

INITIAL RESPONSE: Be aware that the itching will not completely die down until the blemish has healed properly. The itch itself is caused by the mosquito's saliva, an anticoagulant.

It causes our bodies to produce a histamine response, creating a slight itchiness around the bite area from a mild allergic reaction. For people who are more sensitive to mosquito bites, the healing time can take longer than for those less susceptible, so it's merely a case of knowing your limits and treating yourself regularly and effectively.

•Do your best not to scratch the itch!

Doing so will aggravate the irritation, making it itchier and more prone to infection.

Deal with the bites when they first occur.

As soon as possible, aim to reduce the potential for severe itching by treating the bite areas. Clean the bite area with rubbing alcohol, alcohol wipes, or plain water.

•For those who have a severe reaction to the bites and look as if they've caught chicken pox, apply an antihistamine cream or lotion. Especially effective are ointments containing a combination of an antihistamine, analgesic, and

corticosteroid, as this can relieve both pain and itching.

•Leave on for a few minutes, and then wash off with warm water.

•Washing with an antiseptic will often relieve initial pain from an insect bite.

Mix baking soda and household cleaner:

•If an infection develops from the bites, or from scratching them, see your physician promptly.

•Mix a few drops of household cleaning ammonia with baking soda to form a paste.

Select an itch-soothing solution from one of the many methods listed below. The choice you make should be guided by what you have available, the cost involved, any allergies to ingredients, ease of use, and familiarity with the solution. You may find that some solutions work better for you than others. All of them have been discovered by many other mosquito itch sufferers over time, and it's case of working out which ones you like the most through trial and error. Naturally, always speak to your doctor for advice should you have any concerns, if you appear to have had a severe allergic reaction or if your bites are not healing.

•Apply gently to the affected area and allow to dry. This should relieve the itching.

•Remove with warm water. Note that household ammonia can also be dabbed onto the bites by itself.

VINEGAR TREATMENTS Apply apple cider vinegar to the bite: •Soak a cotton ball in apple cider vinegar.

•Place the soaked cotton ball over the mosquito bites. If you don't want to hold it, tape it in place.

•Leave there for a few minutes. You should find that the pain stops.

Make a vinegar paste:

BAKING SODA TREATMENTS A strong alkaline solution will often ease insect itching. Two forms of homemade pastes with baking soda are known to be especially effective at this.

Mix baking soda (bicarbonate of soda) and warm water:

•Make a thick paste of cornflour and apple cider vinegar.

•Gently apply the paste to the affected area.

•Allow to dry. It will alleviate the itching by the time it has dried.

•One tablespoon to one pint of water is a good ratio to use.

•Wash off using warm water. You could also place tape or a bandage over this to leave it on longer.

•Gently apply to the affected area. Use your clean fingers (not the dirty ones), a cotton swab or a Popsicle stick to apply.

Use any other type of vinegar. Vinegar stops the itching and helps the swelling to go down.

WATER, LIQUID OR ICE Whether it's ice cold or piping hot, using water may help alleviate the itches. The method you choose probably depends most on which temperature you like best applied to your skin!

•Take a nice, relaxing hot bath. The addition of strong chickweed tea, two tablespoons of cider vinegar, or two cups ground oatmeal to the bath can help to alleviate itching.

•If you're near the sea, take a dip in sea water. You can also add salt to hot water to make salt water.

•Dip a wash cloth into hot water, but not so hot that it burns your skin. Press the wet part of the cloth against the bite. Hold it there until you feel the bite tingle. Repeat once or twice. Your nerves will be confused and the itching will vanish for hours. The heat causes all the histamine (the protein used by the body to initiate immune responses, which include irritation and itching) in the skin surrounding the bite to be released at once.

•Apply an ice pack or ice cubes to the bites. You should leave this on the affected area for about 20 minutes.

•Use cooled tea. It can work wonders when applied to insect bites. Apply to the affected area in a manner similar to a compress.

•Put a wet sponge in the freezer and so when you get itchy, you can put the sponge on the bite. Make sure that the sponge is clean.

•Get an ice pack (liquid ice packs work best). Use Sellotape [transparent, cellulose-based, pressure-sensitive adhesive tape] to hold it on your leg. It will start to tingle but then will be free completely of irritation.

•Use alcohol. Dab neat gin or any clear alcoholic liquor on the bites. This instantly cools the skin and stops the itch.

•Rub a wet aspirin over the affected area. Naturally, do not use this method if the person is allergic to aspirin.

•Dab some toothpaste over the bite area. This can work like a charm to relieve itching. Regular flavored toothpaste is the best option for this method.

•Use any non-gel tooth paste. Gel toothpaste is not suitable for this method.

•Rub it on your bite but leave a glop.

•Let it dry overnight.

•Wash in the morning with cold water and mild soap. The toothpaste will dry the bite out, removing any irritation.

ESSENTIAL OILS Use lavender oil. Dabbing small amounts of lavender oil direct to the affected area can relieve the itching quickly.

Use melaleuca or tea tree (ti-tree) oil.

This oil is known as a cure-all for many problems and it can also alleviate the itching from mosquito bites.

•Add a drop of tea tree oil to an ice cold compress of witch hazel. It helps stop the burning feeling and the itch.

HERBAL REMEDIES

Try mouthwash. Simply dab over the affected area and leave to dry.

Rub Aloe Vera gel or broken leaf from an aloe vera plant on the bite area to relieve itching.

Rub some underarm deodorant on the bite area. Try to use a non-scented deodorant if possible.

Apply a poultice of witch hazel to the affected area. Witch hazel will soothe almost any inflamed area of skin.

Mixing crushed Tums tablets with water creates a paste that can be effective in relieving itching from mosquito bites.

Fresh basil leaves that are crushed and directly applied to the area also naturally relieve itching symptoms.

Try adding some distilled witch hazel to calamine lotion as an effective pain relief and itch soother for mosquito bites.

FRUITS AND VEGGIES

Try perfume on the bites. It might sting a bit, but it is better after a couple of minutes. However, perfume can also attract more mosquitoes, so don't use this if you're still in the area of the mosquitoes.

SOAP Wash the infected area using soap and water. Soap may be enough to relieve the itching. Use a mild soap, so as to not increase the irritation of the skin.

Rub a bar of dry or wet soap over the itchy area.

MUD

ITEMS IN YOUR BATHROOM CABINET

Mud provides a cooling sensation that temporarily relieves itching. If you're outdoors, make do with what you've got!

Your bathroom cabinet holds everyday solutions for itching that you might not have thought about:

•Apply mud to the affected area. Cover with a bandage to hold it in place.

•Leave to dry.

•Wash off the dried-on mud with water.

A few fruits or veggies can be put to good use in easing the itching pain.

Cut a lemon or lime into pieces and rub gently on the affected area, or just squirt a bit of juice on it. Citric acid has some itch-relieving properties.

Use the common plantain. Either roll leaves of common plantain between your fingers to extract the juice or rub the juicy leaf over mosquito bite. The itch goes away in less than a minute.

Rub the inside of a banana skin (peel) onto the bite.

Rub the sap of an onion over the bite.

Put a raw potato on the bite. Simply cut a potato in half and rub an open side of one half on the bite. The potato sap will dry over the bites and help alleviate the itching.

CAMPING FOOD If all you have to turn to is your camping food, it still may contain some goodies that can help soothe the itching!

Cover the bite with the membrane and let dry. As it contracts, it will draw out some of the toxin.

Use your breakfast oatmeal. Oatmeal is renowned for its anti-itching properties, so make a small paste of it and apply to the bite area. Allow to dry, then wash off.

Add a little meat tenderizer to the bite area. Mix it in water first before applying.

Apply some honey to the bite area.

PRESSURE, WIPING OR RUBBING Use your fingernail to press "sunbursts" around the mosquito bite. This is a good method if the mosquito bite has popped.

Use your fingernail to press an "X" into the bite. This disperses the protein and stops the itch for a while.

Try drawing around it using a ballpoint pen. This works to relieve the pain in some people.

Take a rubber band and give yourself a "spider bite", or put two fingers in the rubber band, put the fingers on either side of the bite, pull the rubber band back and snap it on the bite. This will numb the nerves so it doesn't itch; it's not a permanent fix and you should be careful as it could hurt you even more!

Put a piece of Scotch tape (or similar) onto the bite. Wash the area with rubbing alcohol or ammonia first.

Leaving it there will make the itch almost entirely go away. After a few hours, remove it. This will help remove some of the toxins that cause the itch.

Place your own saliva on the bites.

Leave it to soak in. For some people, this relieves the itching.

Use an alcohol wipe and rub around the affected area. This will remove the remnants of the mosquito saliva.

Hold a penny or copper coin against the bites. Copper often makes the skin feel better after being "stung"; try putting a penny over it.

APPLYING HEAT Use heat. Applying a source of heat

to the bite can remove the toxins produced from the reaction between the mosquito's saliva and antibodies.

•Apply a warm dry cloth over the infected areas. If a warm dry cloth is not available, a toasted tortilla is an effective solution that will help exfoliate the bites, and exfoliate hunger.

•Use a blow dryer to blow hot air on it.

This is the easiest way to disperse the histamines; it will stop itching for hours!

•Press a warm spoon to the bite. Let a metal spoon sit in steaming hot water for a minute. Remove the spoon from the water, let it cool for five to ten seconds, and press it onto your mosquito bite. Hold it there for ten to thirty seconds. Repeat a couple of times while the water is still hot, and do this several times daily until your bite is healed.

COMMERCIAL PREPARATIONS There are a few commercial items that may or may not be made to treat mosquito bite itching, but still have the intended effect.

Try Vicks Vaporub®. Keep applying Vicks® to the area, especially if it rubs off.

•Put vapor rub or cold rub on the bite.

Use nail polish (preferably clear). Be sure that the bite is not raw from scratching.

This keeps it from itching and acts as a seal to protect it.

Look for preparations made to alleviate insect bites and stings. Products such as Stingose, Aspivenin, and After Bite can help to alleviate pain. Other products such as Bactine, Solarcaine, and firstaid creams can also help. Follow the instructions accompanying the product. If you can't find one, talk to your pharmacist.

TIPS: •You might react to mosquitoes from a different place more than your original home town. There are many species of mosquitoes, so you may react to the bites of some species more than others.

•Do not get discouraged if a remedy doesn't work right away. Some remedies may take two or three applications before its effects fully kick in. It will

eventually stop itching; distract yourself by doing something else.

•If you have a bite on your foot, cover it with a band-aid and flip flops. Covered shoes might infect it.

•If you react to bites and know you're more than likely to get eaten alive (for those moments when even bathing in repellant and wearing 7 layers of clothes won't help), pop an antihistamine before you go out.

•Put a dab of Red Cross toothache medicine on each bite to stop the itch.

It will work for hours.

•The use of an oral product with 10 20% benzocaine will help to put the skin to sleep helping with the itching works well on children. Go to your doctor or an adult.

•Dry skin may make you itch more, so applying some protection lotion or moisturizer could help too.

•Try not to let the bites come in contact with blankets. If they do, they will rub on the blanket and itch even more.

•If you think you might scratch in your sleep, cover the bite with a band aid.

•To avoid bites, so you don't have to deal with them at all, spray on a little bug spray, or wear a mosquito repellent bracelet.

Warnings: •If you feel you must scratch, try patting or (if it really itches,) slapping the area instead. Dermatologists will verify that patting or slapping stimulates the same nerves without damaging the skin.

•Never mix ammonia with bleach. It will cause a chemical reaction, and the result is a potentially fatal gas.

•If your itching doesn't stop and the sores aren't healing, see your doctor.

Skin that appears inflamed or infected requires immediate medical treatment.

•In case you are indicated as allergic to mosquito bites (your bites start swelling immediately), ask your physician for Fenistil Drops (or equivalent) an effective anti-histamine cure for allergies to mosquito bites.

•Whatever you do, don't scratch or rub your bites. This will make the itching worse.

Someone who is self-confident is able to see past his own needs and wants, while an egoist believes that he is the only one who has worth around him. This is the key difference between those who have self esteem or overactive egos: self-esteem often means you are confident enough to allow for criticism and failure, while ego often leads to discrediting all others around you because you are the only one who can be “right.”

To that end, you will erect barriers of defense in order to protect yourself. Those barriers can include blaming others, bragging about things you don’t truly like about yourself, getting angry, or making excuses. You can imagine how damaging this kind of behavior can be to friendships.

How Can You Cultivate SelfEsteem?

• Realize your limits. No one is without flaws. While this might not always seem to be true, recognizing that everyone else has his or hero own failings can give you perspective on your own. You are a unique and distinctive person regardless of

your flaws.

• Stop putting yourself down.

Restructure the way you speak to yourself by identifying when you are putting yourself down and making a conscious decision to speak more kindly to yourself.

Constantly putting yourself down can seriously injure your self-image.

• Celebrate progress and small victories. Building selfesteem happens in baby steps.

Acknowledge when you do things right, even if it’s only a small improvement. Giving yourself compliments can help you develop belief in your abilities.

It’s hard to believe, but friendship truly begins by believing in yourself and having the ability to accept both constructive criticism and affection. This is especially difficult to actualize with children who have learning disabilities (LD), like dyslexia.

Research shows that children with LD are more likely to suffer from low-self esteem than their peers. The Coordinated Campaign for Learning Disabilities has compiled a list of ways that parents can help children with LD gain selfesteem: • Special time. Set aside designated time with your child to explore her interests. This time

need not be daily, but if possible, should happen at the same time weekly. This special time will give her the message that you value her and enjoy your time together. In addition, you will be participating in an activity that she enjoys.

• Develop problem-solving skills.

Not everyone automatically knows what to do when they encounter a problem. If your child is having trouble with a friend or cannot figure out a math question, talk to him about the ways he can approach the problem. Ask him to suggest multiple paths to get to a plausible conclusion. This will give him confidence when he encounters a similar problem in the future.

• Practice empathy. Raising children with different needs can sometimes be frustrating.

You might find yourself telling your son, “Why don’t you listen to me?” Or, “Just think about it! You’ll understand.” Chances are that most of the time, your son is trying his best to listen and understand. Instead, try to place yourself in his shoes and say, “I know you are trying to listen and that sometimes that is difficult. Let’s try that again.”

When you practice empathy, he will be more likely to think kindly of himself.

learning disabilities often come with multiple disadvantages, often they have some benefits too. Children with dyslexia are often more creative and artistic than their peers. Consider signing your daughter up for art or drama classes. Doing something that she is good at can boost her self-esteem tremendously and provide her with an opportunity to make likeminded friends.

• Provide opportunities for your child to help. When people help others, they automatically feel competent and confident.

Provide your daughter with plenty of opportunities to help others. Volunteering outside of the home is just one avenue, but even helping siblings at home can be great encouragement. She can teach a younger sibling to tie his shoe or help an older sibling braid her hair. Alternatively, you can teach her to bake her favorite cake and then she can bake it for shabbos. Regardless of the task, if your daughter feels that she is making a contribution to society or the family, she will gain self-confidence.

The hard part about self-esteem is that it comes from within, but with a few small steps, all children, including those children with LD can start to feel like the wonderful kids you already know they are. And, that’s the first step to making friends.
