Down to the wire

Wimmera’s Ronnie Barron from Jeparit applies his touch to one of many critical bowls during intense Bowls Victoria provincial championships at Horsham’s Coughlin Park greens. A Wimmera division team, up against Central Victoria-Ballarat, Geelong and Bendigo-Campaspe representative outfits, won the annual title, its first in 34 years, in a thriller by 0.5328 percent. The annual championships, which visit each region every four years, came down to the last end of the day when an umpire couldn’t split a measure and declared it a tie and a two-shot win to Wimmera. Despite Central Victoria-Ballarat winning the game, victory in the rink meant Wimmera finished on top of the table. Earlier, Wimmera had won in an upset against Geelong and had a strong win over Bendigo-Campaspe. Almost 100 of the best bowlers in western Victoria took part in the championships, which will be in Ballarat next year. Picture: PAUL CARRACHER
