Penrith Council’s 2013 National Water Week Environmental Photo Competition was another outstanding success with Council receiving more than 100 entries. This year the winner of the Open Category for his photo titled ‘Walking Bird’ is Bobins Johny. (see photo on right). Bobins won a $500 photography gift certificate and a double pass for rafting at Penrith Whitewater Stadium. The competition encouraged people to explore our river and creeks and the life they support and to capture the essence of the 2013 theme, ‘Local Water, Local Life’. The winner of the Kids Category was Natasha Webb for her photo titled ‘Habitats in the Water’ while the winner of the Youth Category was Madeline Slevin for her photo simply titled ‘Creek’. This competition is part of Council’s Stormwater Improvement Program, which supports projects that improve and maintain the quality of our waterways and that raise community awareness about water management and water use.

turns, special attention should be paid to the rights of way, which include giving way to traffic (including bicycles) already in a lane, and pedestrians. Just as bicycle riders have responsibilities when using the road, they also have the right, like other vehicles, to use the road and be shown courtesy and care by other road users.

PUBLIC NOTICE Shared-Use Roads – Bicycle Logos in the St Marys Town Centre

The shared-use roads will promote active transport, and reduce vehicle speed and the risk of accidents between bicycle riders and vehicles. It will mean more room for riders than bicycle-only lanes, decreasing the risk of ‘dooring’ from parked vehicles. Remember, bicycle riders must obey the road rules, including stopping at red lights or stop signs, giving way and using hand signals when changing direction (not stopping). For left and right

Council is implementing shared-use roads in the existing 40km per hour High Pedestrian Activity Area in the St Marys Town Centre. Bike logos will be painted in the middle of the lanes to ensure drivers are aware of bicycles on the road. Council is promoting the use of bicycles in the town centre, especially for trips less than 5km. While it is desirable for separate bicycle lanes or paths, this is not possible in the town centre.

Light refreshments provided by Penrith Council. Bookings essential: Program 0064690. To enrol into the workshop call Sport & Recreation on 13 13 02, fax: 9006 3883 or email miguel.andrade@communities.nsw.gov.au
