Up Close... With The Editor Happy New Year! The old cliche’ of “my New Year’s Resolution is NOT to make any more New Year’s Resolutions” has gotten old. So has the same old, same old that I make every year and then let fall by the wayside before January 2nd ... You know, the daily exercise and lose weight routine. Turn over a new leaf and be kind to everybody, no more candy; eat healthier. This year I promise to be different. I will not let my resolutions fall by the wayside. It’s a brand new year and we have so much to be thankful for. So I will make brand new resolutions that I’ve never made before. January 1 finds The Weekender Magazine moved into new offices. With more room and more employees, we’ll be expanding into other areas with new issues this Spring. I’ve learned with this move that I’m a packrat almost to the level of being a hoarder! So my first New Year’s Resolution is to organize and throw stuff away. (Well, maybe I should just keep one or two or even three copies for safe keeping...) My second resolution is to quit committing to more responsibilities than I can handle. It’s just that there are so many places to go, and things to do, and people to see that I have trouble saying “no.” And all I want

to do is share them with you - my readers! Third, but certainly not last, I will make every attempt to offer more pages covering great events every month, surpassing each issue from before. And with this promise to myself, I won’t break any of my resolutions. Instead, I’ll carry them through all year long. Stay tuned for our Open House announcement. We invite all our readers to join us as we celebrate a new address, new offices, new staff and new coverage areas in 2013. My only heartbreak is that Mr. Tim Moore, former boss, inspiration, and original partner for The Weekender will not be present to witness this grand event. He went home to be with the Lord in October after battling a lengthy illness. As a Certified Business Adviser for the Ohio Small Business Develop-ment Center, he was instrumental in encouraging us to make this move. So, Tim, I pay tribute to your memory as we continue to push our dream forward....

People To See

eep in the heart of Louisiana lies America’s largest swamp-a million miles of inhospitable bayous, marshes and wetlands where nature rules and humans struggle to tame it. Many of its inhabitants are the hardened descendants of French refugees who were forced out of Canada in the 18th century and settled in this

harsh yet majestic environment. Today, these people are known as the Cajuns, a group renowned throughout the world for their flavorful cuisine, distinctive music and vibrant culture. Resilient, self-reliant and fiercely independent, the Cajuns of the Atchafalaya Swamp still carry on many of their ancestors’ trades and traditions. HISTORY CHANNEL follows these swampers through a time of year that is crucial to their survival: the 30-day alligator hunting season. At its core, this is a uniquely American story of a proud and skillful people fighting to maintain an ancient way of life in a rapidly modernizing world, despite the many perils and trials that stand in their way. You Can Meet Joe LaFont and Tommy Chauvin from the Hit Show “Swamp People” at this year’s show. Joe & Tommy will be at the IX show Friday and Saturday. Joe and his stepson Tommy have hunted together since Tommy was a little boy. Joe’s passing on to Tommy all the swamp secrets he learned from his own father, including a top secret

recipe for gator bait known as “goo-goo” juice. Forgetful Tommy can sometimes be a handful, but this gator-hunting team always ends up delivering the goods. Joe LaFont is a veteran of the marsh and a steadfast swamper focused on bagging his quota. Working alongside his stepson Tommy, Joe has many traditional Cajun tricks up his sleeve that he learned from his father. He’s ready to give Tommy more responsibility this season—even though his stepson is notoriously unreliable. Time will tell whether Tommy’s capable of leading as well as following In the past, Joe LaFont’s stepson Tommy Chauvin has come across as forgetful and lazy, wearing on Joe’s patience by sleeping in and

partying hard. Now, however, this veteran hunter is trying to turn over a new leaf. Faced with many tags and little time, Tommy’s poised to share the role of captain. Will he rise to the challenge, or is Tommy destined to be Joe’s slacker student?

Chili Challis & Owen Thomas Friday, Jan. 18 ~ 8:00 pm at the State Theatre SANDUSKY - Besides being a national touring comedian, Chili Challis is a former NBC staff writer and still current writer for "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno". He's a regular performer on "The Bob & Tom Show" and contributed to the humor of the national comic strip "MOTHER GOOSE AND GRIMM". He is the creator of the original UNZIPPED: "The Woody Monologues" the hysterical male answer to those female monologues you've heard so much about! Chili doesn't bring a lot of gimmicks to the stage. Just stand-up at its funniest and wackiest!! Owen Thomas has quickly become one of the fastest rising stars in the Midwest. He started out performing anywhere with a microphone, from hole in the wall bars to bowling alleys and even an AA

meeting. He covers a wide array of topics spanning from American society to his trouble meeting Chili women. On stage, Challis he has a very likable persona that comes off as soft spoken and humble but catches the audience off guard when he reveals his true somewhat demented self. His originality has garnered him respect from his peers. He has also opened for many great national acts including Saturday Night Live alum, Norm MacDonald and Tracy Morgan. He is a favorite at many clubs including Joey's Comedy Club and the Funny Stop. Tickets are now on sale at $10 per person. Call 419-626-1347 or visit www.sanduskystate.com
