Up Close: From the Editor I wish my mother was still alive so I could wish her a “Happy Mother’s Day.” Those special days are over for me. However, I still have wonderful memories and, perhaps, will share one of them with you periodically. It all boils down to the memories. When it is all said and done, that is what we have left: the memories. I’ve talked to so many who do not seem to have happy ones, unfortunately. So this is why I highly encourage all my readers to make sure this is not true for them. Especially, by remembering Mom this month on her special day. See page 6 for fresh ideas on how to do just that. This month, we are featuring camping. I look at camping as a getaway to relax, enjoy the outdoors and bond with loved ones, making new and pleasant memories. For instance, the first time we took the kids camping in a tent, my oldest daughter and her best friend wound up sleeping on the picnic table because she was afraid the wild forest animals may be able to get in her tent. Another time was when the boys had one tent. The girls had another. The boys stayed up fishing all night. The next morning, the girls woke up with their tent wrapped around them like a blanket. The boys had taken it down as a prank. With so many places to go, things to do, and people to see featured in this issue, you are sure to find the right one suited to your taste and interest. So happy travels, Until next month... P.S. Spring cleaning ongoing - Pictures postponed until next issue.

ead to Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens in Columbus for the Grand Opening of the Scotts Miracle Grow Children’s Garden! Featuring sixteen different interactive experiences celebrating the Ohio landscape, the Garden will focus on introducing and connecting children to the natural world, as well as renewing that connection for their parents and caregivers. Que the green thumb.

Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens announced today the May 19 opening of its newly expanded visitor experience. The opening coincides with the launch of The Scotts Miracle-Gro Foundation Children’s Garden on the same day. The expansion and the Children’s Garden is the largest botanical project the Conservatory has embarked on to date. Guest offerings will be at an all-time high at the Conservatory. The Conservatory is known for its botanical biomes and seasonal exhibitions, and growth over the last 25 years has the building bursting at the seams. Be-

ginning May 19, the visitor experience will grow from 3 acres to 13 acres. Along with the new Children’s Garden, the Conservatory has enclosed 10 acres of its property to the north and west of the main Conservatory building, creating endless possibilities for exhibitions, art installations, formal gardens, events and classes. Exhibitions planned for the expanded

visitor experience include: • Expanded Topiaries at the Conservatory: Beginning May 19, a flamboyance of 75 flamingo topiaries will be installed in the Grand Mallway in a vast bed of blue flowers representing water. • Expanded Harvest Blooms: In the fall, the Conservatory will expand its autumn exhibition by adding whimsical pumpkin structures and seasonal

plantings to the Children’s Garden, while the Grand Mallway will take on a more formal feel with elegant, seasonal plantings and décor. • Expanded Conservatory Aglow: The Conservatory’s signature holiday exhibition has grown in popularity over the years; the extra space, will allow the light show to expand exponentially and offer guests a unique experience. • Expanded Columbus Blooms: The Conservatory’s spring exhibition will blossom in 2019 and paint the Grand Mallway and the Children’s Garden in vibrant seasonal color. • In addition to expanded exhibitions, the Grand Mallway will also open up numerous possibilities for art installations and displays from emerging and world-renowned artists. While expanding the way visitors engage with nature allows the Conservatory to create experiences that guests of all ages can enjoy, there is also a far more important need for enclosing the Conservatory’s land: safety. The addition of the Children’s Garden and expanded visitor experience in the Grand Mallway will increase the number of visitors to the Conservatory, many of which will be children. Ohio Is Ground Bigfoot Enthus Located in Southeastern Ohio, Salt Fork State Park Lodge is ground zero for Bigfoot enthusiasts. Whether the product of folklore, misidentification, or hoax, this large, hairy humanoid — also known as Sasquatch — continues to fascinate believers and attract countless “spotters” around the country. One popular place for reported sightings is Ohio, which ranks in the top five states nationally. Many of those eyewitness accounts come from visitors and rangers at Ohio State Parks. In fact, three Ohio State Park Lodges are in the center of that activity, making them convenient home bases for Bigfoot enthusiasts who want to join in organized events and hikes or just head out on their own in search of the elusive creature. A Bigfoot Conference is even slated in Ohio every year. This year’s dates are May 4 and 5 at the Salt Fork State Park Lodge & Conference Center near Lore City. This conference has grown into the premier Bigfoot conference in the world drawing thousands of people each year. The event features top rated speakers from accross the Bigfoot community who share their experiences and knowledge in the subject of Sasquatch. Meet with other Sasquatch enthusiasts and go on the advanced hike which will take place at an undisclosed location. Upon your return, VIP ticket holders will enjoy a great meal. Meet other VIPs and mingle with some of the conference speakers and organizers.

Punderson State Park Punderson State Park in rural northeast Ohio has a number of documented sightings. In the heart of the woods is Punderson Manor State Park Lodge with homey rooms, cabins, and old manor-style lodging available for those on the hunt for Sasquatch in the region. Mohican State Park Mohican State Park in Central Ohio has seen an increase in Bigfoot sightings since 2010, particularly in the woods near Big Lyons Falls. There are occasional Bigfoot hikes that draw more than 500 people. Nearby Mohican State Park Lodge is centrally located among the spots of documented sightings. The lodge provides easy access to hiking trails that run throughout the 1,000-acre state park. Salt Fork State Park Perhaps the most noted Bigfoot location in Ohio is in the dense forest cover in Ohio’s largest state park at Salt Fork. Located in Southeastern Ohio, Salt Fork State Park Lodge is ground zero for Bigfoot enthusiasts. One reason for the attention is that Sasquatch has long been rumored to live in Salt Fork State Park. There have been more than 30 documented sightings since the 1970s. The park’s rolling landscape, plush with hickory and oak trees that surround a nearly 3,000-acre lake, is the backdrop for the annual Ohio Bigfoot Conference, held in May each year. It is the world’s longest running Bigfoot

conference attracting more than 3,000 participants from as far away as Australia. The Bigfoot enthusiasts and researchers who attend share stories, compare scientific discoveries — and, of course, search for the hairy beast. Salt Fork State Park Lodge is the home base for those who want to stay in the middle of the wooded grounds. Each lodge room has a patio or balcony for a constant view of the woods. Cabins are also located on site. Creature Weekend, scheduled for Oct. 20-22 in 2017, is another themed event at the lodge that Bigfoot hunters attend. It centers on cryptozoology, which is the study of hidden animals, including Sasquatch. In addition, Salt Fork hosts other opportunities throughout the year focused on the legend that makes this region famous. Join in a Bigfoot Adventure Weekend, a three-night campout with workshops, demonstrations, and hikes, or take a monthly Bigfoot Night Hike in the park with Bigfoot experts who are familiar with the landscape and reported sightings. To tackle your own search during your stay, pick up a Bigfoot Hikes map from the lodge’s front desk, and follow the trails where there are documented sightings. Take a hike on the Bigfoot Ridge, Morgan’s Knob, or the Buckeye Trail, which have some of the most notable Sasquatch activity. Whether you believe or not, the Legend of Bigfoot is alive in Ohio, allowing you to be a part of the phenomenon at

whatever level you choose. And, you never know, you just might spot the mysterious beast yourself during your stay. How to Explore Salt Fork, Mohican, and Punderson Manor are part of the five lakeside lodges of the Ohio State Parks, which offer a variety of accommodation types, ranging from standard and bunk/loft rooms to two- and four-bedroom cabins. Besides hiking, they offer indoor/outdoor pools, golf, boating, full-service dining, and more. For more information and reservations, visit OhioStateParkLodges.com or call 800-282-7275.

A video was recently upload to Youtube of what is said to be a bigfoot walking in the woods in Ohio. The description is very brief and basically just states that the man was walking in the woods & thought he was alone, when this figure stands up and walks away.
