Up Close From the Editor Fall is in the Air The crisp, cool nights are more abundant now and the leaves are turning beautiful shades of crimson and orange. So it’s time for a cozy weekend getaway. I’ll never forget my first visit to Vermont and New Hampshire at this time of year when I realized the photos on my fall calendar pages had been taken there. You had to actually see it to tell the breathtaking difference. And, yes, I love the tradition of sitting around the table with family and friends on Thanksgiving Day before a huge turkey, lots of mashed potatoes and pumpkin pie. Yet, there are still some events in life you just have to experience at least once in a lifetime. Only on Thanksgiving Day can you experience the one and only Macy’s Day Parade in New York. It’s worth the trip. And only on the weekend before Thanksgiving can you celebrate a traditional dinner the way the Pilgrims and Indians did in the same location Plymouth, Mass. Now it is a two-day event which includes live entertainment, a parade, and more. See more details on pages 34-5. There are other extended getaway suggestions on pages 1011. Wherever you spend the upcoming holidays, here’s wishing you a very happy Thanksgiving!

About the Cover : Celebrate this year’s harvest season in a truly American way by spending some time exploring historic Boston attractions— after all, Massachusetts is the birthplace of Thanksgiving. In the United States, the first Thanksgiving celebration is usually traced back to a feast held in 1621 on Plimoth Plantation between the colonists and the Wampanoag Indians, inspired by the fruitful harvest. This fall, experience Thanksgiving as the Pilgrims and Native Americans did when you visit Plimoth Plantation.
