PERFORMING ARTS REGISTER to WIN!

KID’S RIGHT TO READ PROJECT (KRRP), co-sponsored by the ABFFE and the National Coalition Against Censorship, sent a letter to the Bedford School District Assistant Superintendent in response to a book controversy that has been brewing over complaints by two parents. The parents objected to the sexual content in Sara Gruen’s Water For Elephants. It was banned without formal review and the district proposed to create a “checklist” style rating system to avoid future controversies. The KRRP letter protests the school district’s decision to allow the parents to dictate the curriculum for all Bedford (NH) students, and that the rating system could result in a sanitized curriculum. “ The practical effect of acceding to any parent’s request to censor materials will e to invite more book challenges, and to leave school officials vulnerable to multiple, possibly conflicting demands. . . While we applaud the efforts [by school officials] to create a system for curricular selections, we suggest that this response is both misguided and insufficient, because it is being driven in whole or part by a desire to prevent parental complaints in the future.” Read this article www.unitionleader.com Water for Elephants movie opens in theaters April 22nd.

PERFORMING ARTS Mrs. Stancliffe’s Rose Cottage Bed & Breakfast has been successful for many years. Her guests, nearly all women, return year after year. Her next door neighbor, the elderly, silver-tongued, “Bud the Stud” Davis believes they come to spend time with him in romantic liaisons. The prim and proper Mrs. Stancliffe steadfastly denies this, but reluctantly accepts the fact that “Bud the Stud” is, in fact, good for business. Her other neighbor and would-be suitor, Henry Mitchell, is a retired chemist who has developed a blue pill called “Venusia” to increase the libido of menopausal women. The fun begins when Bud acquires some of the untested Venusia pills and attempts to entertain all three female guests of the bed and breakfast. A mix up in medication reveals Venusia’s strange effects on men. When the mayhem settles down, all the women find their lives moving in new and surprising directions.

Performance dates are April 8 thru 23, 2011 For more information, performance times, and ticket prices visit www.mctweb.org Apr 2011

BALCH SPRINGS COMMUNITY EVENTS

LITERARY NEWS Bayou Soul - June 30 - July 1, 2011 New Orleans, LA http://www.bswconference.com

Over the years, arts and cultural festivals have precipitated an explosion of cultural awareness and artistic talent in the Crescent City. Most of the festivals are music-centered which we all enjoy and take part in. As a writer of several novels; I have been a featured author at such festivals. As great of an experience it was for me, I long for a more intimate setting where I could meet with readers and experience a more personal contact with them. So, I thought it would be nice to create a conference that coincides with other cultural events in New Orleans where those interested in reading books and writing novels and screenplays can come together and experience the literary arts in a relaxed atmosphere. In conjunction with the New Orleans Public Library, BSWRC will bring together some of the biggest and notable names in publishing and film for an unforgettable two day event that will surely be the talk of the town!
