When Brendan Davis first laid eyes on Melina Phouangpanya, he had no idea that he was gazing at his future wife. The Califor-

nia native first spotted Melina quietly reading at a restaurant, while finishing up her last semester of Political Science at UCSD before heading off to Law school. He now jokes: “I was intrigued because she looked so different, yet so beautiful. I didn’t even know if she spoke English.” Nonetheless, the connection was undeniable. Following their separate dinners that night he saw her again at the neighboring lounge. After 45 minutes, he finally got up the nerve to approach

her and discovered that they had more in common than anyone he had ever met. Both fun-loving fitness fanatics, Brendan asked Melina to flex her bicep on the dance floor, and when she obliged, he was smitten. They became inseparable sharing a love for bodybuilding, health, family, Christ and travel. After a year and a half of dating, Brendan proposed on Christmas morning by strategically hiding a Tiffany box inside of a yel-

low Jimmy Choo purse. After opening the matching shoes, an already ecstatic Melina was speechless when she discovered her true gift. Brendan got gown on one knee and the whole family witnessed Melina scream “yes” as tears flowed from everyone’s eyes. They married six months later on The Ritz-Carlton Laguna Niguel’s oceanfront terrace overlooking picturesque Salt Creek beach. It was an intimate wedding and exactly how they wanted it. Melina’s “modern design, California couture” vision engulfed every aspect of the décor. Discovering art history, fashion and design in college, Melina loved the use of ghost chairs, modern acrylic columns, “invisible” programs with gilded calligraphy, a neo-Baroque mirror as seating chart, and minimalist Vera Wang crystal frames as transparent table numbers. As an ode to haute fashion, the tables were dressed in hand-beaded vintage lace finely tipped with faux fur. The theme carried through to the four-tiered, all-crystal cake. Envisioned by Melina, it was as delicious

as it was beautiful, adorned with organic sugar flower petals and vintage Chanel crystals and pearl buttons. The foodie couple even carried the fashion theme through to their cuisine with an “Haute Orient” menu. It was a three-day celebration witnessed by 60 of their closest family and friends including Melina’s parents who flew in from Laos. Having never attended an American wedding before, the day proved to be particularly moving for Melina’s father who walked his youngest daughter down the aisle. His feelings of contentment became clear as he looked at Brendan and softly proclaimed: “Today, I see you make Melina so happy. My heart is now full.” One of the most precious moments of the entire wedding was when Duke Ellington came over the speakers and the dance floor cleared allowing their beloved Grandma Joyce and Grandpa Gill to steal the show. They are notably “the most exquisite ballroom dancers you’ve ever seen.” Grandma Joyce unexpectedly passed three months later, but her loving spirit and presence will forever be remembered by all in attendance. They honeymooned at The Four Seasons Resort Hualulai in Hawaii. > For more feature weddings and resources visit
