Grace & Jon August 23rd

From the bride: THE LOCATION The Joyful Journey Hot Springs became our favorite getaway spot after we’d been dating about a year. We were staying in Salida and looking for somewhere to soak after hiking the Rainbow Trail. We wound up at The Joyful Journey and could barely tear ourselves away; the tubs have a breathtaking view of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and the San Luis valley as a whole, is so majestic and peaceful. We jokingly started planning our wedding right then and there. THE STYLE We wanted a casual, friendly, warm, unfussy, mountainy wedding. The bridesmaids wore a delicate shade of seafoam, the boys classic blue gingham and beige linen. The flowers were bright and happy in oranges, yellows, whites and reds. And the valley itself wore the beautiful dusty yellows and greens of rabbitbrush in the summer. THE CEREMONY We had the ceremony on a hilltop, underneath a birch arch with the Sangre de Cristos as our backdrop and the sky as our cathedral. There was a little dirt path for the aisle and the guests were fanned out on either side, with chairs carefully placed to avoid anyone stepping on prickly pear. It started storming right as we were getting started and the wind was so strong you could barely hear the officiant, but 10 minutes in, the sun burst out and a FULL rainbow graced the valley. It was magical! Alison & Andrew May 24th

From the bride: WHY A COLORADO WEDDING We wanted a quaint mountain town with a laid-back “Colorado” feel where guests could kick back, relax, enjoy the beautiful outdoors and Rocky Mountain National Park. THE STYLE We wanted to combine the Rocky Mountain atmosphere with the colors of spring. We used earthy/wooden natural tones with light peach and yellow. We also incorporated touches that reflected our individual styles and tastes. THE CEREMONY Instead of having any traditional/ religious readings, we adapted a Native American blessing. We invited each parent to come up and place an item on the table (feather, candle, water, crystal), which represented the four common directions and elements of our common being (north/ earth, south/fire, east/air, west/water). We also wrote 11 of our own “promise” vows, as 11-11-11 was the date that we ironically started dating!

The most memorable moment was right before saying our vows, a huge elk started walking right behind where we were standing.

Alison & Andrew ADVICE Enjoy these special moments and remember that while a wedding is a very special day, it’s the lifetime of days that really matter. Have fun, mix it up, and try not to stress on the little things. And gals – be comfortable and EAT! If you love to dance – then dance – and make sure you’re able to do it in your dress/shoes. And if you spent time on building a menu, then eat it and enjoy it! Oh, and have fun taste-testing as much cake and food as you can during the planning phase.

I loved every single moment of the day and honestly would not have changed anything.

Emily & Alex August 9th

From the bride: WHY A COLORADO WEDDING Alex and I envisioned our wedding weekend with our closest family and friends in a special place, with a casual yet romantic setting. The quaint village of Beaver Creek allowed for just that and was the perfect place to host our guests. Many of our guests chose to make our wedding weekend a vacation by coming out several days early. Beaver Creek made things simple and stress-free. We were able to coordinate activities everyone could enjoy such as horseback riding through the aspen trees, mountain jeep tours, fishing, hiking and plenty of golf. THE STYLE The inspiration for our wedding came from the beautiful scenery and breathtaking views Beaver Creek Resort offers top to bottom. I chose understated shades of pink and deep champagne as our wedding colors to accent the scenic green mountains.

THE CEREMONY Our ceremony was picture perfect. As the sun shined through the clouds, my uncle performed the ceremony and shared some special thoughts about Alex and I that warmed our hearts. The only glitch during the entire ceremony was a lighter was never placed on the alter table with the unity lanterns for our candle lighting. As it turns out, our metaphorical candle lighting may have been the funniest moment of the entire week. Our guests couldn’t resist bursting into wellmannered laughter, as we pretended to seal our unity.

Emily & Alex MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT Perhaps the most spectacular and romantic feature of the wedding was the perfectly clear night of stars and a full moon at 10,800 feet in elevation. Celebrating our special day with our loved ones in this truly majestic setting made our wedding absolutely perfect.

Our wedding day was the perfect culmination to a wonderful week with our family and friends.

Kim & Mick May 30th

From the bride: THE STYLE We love hiking and camping, so we wanted colors and décor that let the natural beauty of the scenery shine through. Since most of our guests were from out of state, we also wanted to make the space feel personal, welcoming, and truly reflective of us. THE CEREMONY The location was stunning and enhanced by an arbor with hanging glass bottles filled with wildflowers. My favorite memory is walking down the aisle with my dad, seeing all our friends and family so happy for us, and of course Mick waiting for me!

My godfather officiated. He prepared a unique and personal ceremony. He cried, I cried, all of our guests cried. It was a beautiful experience.

MEMORABLE MOMENT After the ceremony, Mick and I snuck away for about 10 minutes to soak in the reality that we just got married. Our venue had champagne and a snack plate ready for us and we were able to celebrate quietly together, slow down the moment, and practice using the words “husband” and “wife” for the first time!

HANDMADE DETAILS My dad’s side of the family is Japanese, so we wanted to incorporate the Japanese tradition of sembazuru, or 1,001 paper cranes. According to legend, cranes mate for life and live for 1,001 years. Cranes have become a symbol of good fortune and longevity. Over the course of about six months, my sisters, parents, grandma, aunts, and cousins helped fold all of the cranes that we hung from the reception tent.

THE DÉCOR My grandma has been collecting colored glass pieces for decades, and she graciously loaned us her treasures to use for the table centerpiece flower arrangements. We kept the space simple and let the Boulder scenery set the mood! My favorite detail was the paper cranes. So many family members worked together to make the cranes. We all have a slightly different style of folding origami so it was fun to spot who had made each crane. It was such a beautiful gesture of love and blessing. 19


Kim & Mick LOOKING BACK I would’ve started getting ready earlier. My bridesmaids and mom and I were enjoying lounging by the hotel pool and snacking and got a bit of a late start and felt rushed. Allow extra time to get ready at a comfortable pace! ADVICE Don’t feel rushed to start planning. Thinking of all the decisions you have to make is overwhelming and things will fall into place in their own time. Put it off for a month or so and simply revel in the bliss of being engaged.

My favorite moments from the reception are dancing the night away with our family members. How often do you get to sing at the top of your lungs and wave your arms around with your parents -it was such a blast.

From the photographers: For this shoot, we wanted to key in on the elements that make Devil’s Thumb Ranch such a unique and wonderful setting. The venue strikes a deft balance between what we consider to be iconically Coloradan elements--the beautiful lake and adjoining forest which are enveloped by sweeping mountains, the lodge feel of the architecture, the fact that the property is an active ranch--and its more upscale, timeless elements. It was important that the look we crafted respected both of those elements.

Amanda & John August 16th

From the bride: WHY COLORADO My husband and I were both living in San Diego when we got engaged, however both originally from Colorado. We met at CU Boulder and our families both still live in Colorado so it made sense to have our wedding in our favorite home state. THE VENUE We chose Crooked Willow Farms as our wedding venue, because it embodied a lot of how our personalities come together. There’s a bit of a juxtaposition of natural, organic beauty and a touch of elegance/glamour. It has a rustic Colorado feel, but still has that opulent and formal atmosphere at the same time. We both love our home state of Colorado and wanted to highlight that where we got married. THE CEREMONY

The weather was perfect so we were married out on the lawn.

I loved every single moment of the day and honestly would not have changed anything.

THE FOOD We served his (Kentucky mule) and hers (mango mojito) drinks. We had stations with our favorite comfort food: “never grow up mac & cheese bar” and a “burgers & fries bar” and a carving station that included cowboy steak and roasted garlic potatoes. Our beautiful cake was complimented by glazed hazelnut donuts and coffee.

Samantha & Adam July 4th

From the bride: WHY COLORADO We both have a love for the mountains and wanted our family from out of state to experience the beautiful Colorado mountains. THE STYLE We wanted our wedding to reflect our casual Colorado lifestyle. I tried to stick with neutral colors because I did not want to take away from the beauty of the venue. The only other color I added was the plum bridesmaid dresses.

We passed a Go Pro around throughout the evening to capture candid video. The footage is priceless!

Samantha & Adam THE CEREMONY We got married on the deck that overlooked the mountains and Piney lake. I walked down the aisle with my father to a piano only version of “Firework” by Katy Perry. My dad wore his military uniform (he surprised me right before we went down the aisle, I had no clue, and cried my eyes out). We had Adam’s dad officiate. Our six month old niece was our “Flower Baby”. One of Adam’s groomsmen sang “Latch” by Sam Smith with the guitar. We wrote our own vows that had everyone in tears and had readings by Dr. Seuss and Bob Marley. It was absolutely perfect, breathtaking, and very much a reflection of us!

We tried to make our ceremony extremely unique and did not include any typical traditions.

HANDMADE TOUCHES DIY was my favorite part of wedding planning, I turned our basement into my little workshop. I made our giant Jenga (with stenciled elevation, date, location and our names), bags with our initials, custom programs, a wooden guestbook, napkin signs, Mr and Mrs signs for our chairs and multiple signs that were placed on the drive up to Piney River Ranch. My mom made the flower girl dresses, table runners and numbers while my dad made the cake stands and cut the logs for the place cards.

THE RECEPTION The reception dÊcor was rustic and casual with burlap and lace runners, lots of candles and logs. For our first toast, we cut open a bottle of champagne with a saber. We served BBQ food including ribs, brisket, mashed potatoes, watermelon, and candied bacon BLTs. For dessert, we had a variety of homemade pies, brownies, ice cream and s’mores. In lieu of favors, we made a donation to the MS foundation and the Boulder humane Society.

The best part of the party was dancing the night away to our great band. They got the party started! We passed out tons of glow sticks and props, and ended the night with a sparkler sendoff!

ADVICE Be organized, don’t obsess over every last detail, hire a good photographer, and a wedding coordinator.

Maureen & Jon August 16th

From the bride: WHY COLORADO We wanted to have an intimate wedding where we could spend time with all of our guests in a gorgeous mountain setting. THE CEREMONY The ceremony was short and very personal. A good friend was our officiant and he did a great job sharing our story. We also loved having a reading from each of our brothers before we exchanged personalized vows. Afterwards, we got to spend a few moments with each other on the chairlift as we tried to take it all in the beautiful scenery, being surrounded by our family and friends, and starting a new adventure together. THE CAKE TOPPER We both love to ski, so we were looking for a way to integrate that into the wedding. The cake topper on the white icing provided the perfect backdrop for our skiing bride and groom. We have kept them and use them as tree ornaments.

We had dinner outside on the deck, which allowed us to enjoy the warm evening and watch the sunset over the mountains while enjoying delicious food.

Tiffany & Lucas June 21st

From the bride: We got married near my family’s cabin in Montrose. Lucas and I both grew up camping around the Western slope, so it was important to us to be married in that area. THE ATTIRE I wore a Maggie Sottero dress that had a very romantic and feminine feel. I made the sash that I wore around my waist with beads and feathers. I wore Chinese shoes to honor my Chinese heritage. THE CEREMONY We had the ceremony in a small meadow surrounded by aspen and pine trees. Lucas made the beautiful archway we got married under. We wrote our own vows and tearfully expressed them to one another. It ended up being hilarious because I could not stop crying long enough to actually say them.

We set up a honeymoon fund instead of doing a gift registry. Our friends and family were able to contribute to our dream trip to Thailand.

THE RECEPTION The reception was at our family cabin. We rented a big tent for the dinner and had a separate tent of just lights for the dancing. Inside of the dinner tent, we had long tables with white table cloths, bright yellow napkins and burlap runners. We had a bunch of small vases with yellow flowers and a variety of succulents that served as party favors. For our guest book, we got a big piece of plywood and painted it with our initials and wedding date. Lucas cut out puzzle pieces with a jigsaw and we had each person sign a piece.

Tiffany & Lucas ADVICE Pick the things that are really important (photographer, food, band, etc.) and don’t compromise on those items. Don’t be afraid to relinquish control and delegate.

I loved how all of the small pieces that we had been working on in the previous months finally came together to make a beautiful scene.

Kelly & Matt June 20th

From the bride: THE LOCATION It had always been my dream and probably my moms to get married on my parent’s farm. It is such a beautiful location in the country with stunning mountain views. THE STYLE I designed our day primarily around the family farm while pulling in the elegance that I love through flowers and decor. Blue hydrangea’s have always been my favorite flower so I built the color palette around the flowers - blue and green with hints of silver. THE THEME Matt and I share a love of travel so, we decided it would be a great theme for our wedding. THE CEREMONY My parents were married on the same day 45 years before Matt and I on June 20, 1970. On that day, my mom’s dad gave her a pence as good luck that she kept in her shoe. My father gave me the very same pence for my shoe.

My favorite memory was seeing Matt with tears in his eyes as I walked down the aisle. .

ESCORT CARDS We named our tables after cities we have traveled to and placed pictures of us at that city on each corresponding table. We placed the seating cards in a vintage suitcase and asked each guest to “find your destination�.

Caitlin & Josh June 28th

From the bride: OUR STYLE Our style was rustic western. Our inspiration was nature and understated beauty found in unexpected places (like old ranches). We didn’t do anything because it was expected of us. The entire day was simple and relaxed, just like Josh and I. We also had many friends involved in different aspects of the day (making pies, decorating our camper, etc.) and since they know us so well, it really personalized the day.

All the elements of our wedding were carefully chosen because we found something in them that spoke to us.

Caitlin & Josh THE CEREMONY We held our ceremony in an aspen grove on the ranch. It was officiated by two close friends and took place under an arch made of aspen trees that Josh built. The atmosphere was relaxed and casual with readings from each of our moms. We wrote our own vows and planned the entire ceremony to fit our beliefs and values. No template. No traditions. No wedding party. Exactly what we wanted and felt connected to.

Josh and I set up a private meeting space in the woods for our “first look.� When I was ready, I headed there and we spent about twenty minutes together before the momentum of the day whisked us away.

HANDMADE TOUCHES We picked wildflowers for the centerpieces and placed homemade pies on round aspen pedestals. LOOKING BACK I would have asked for more help from family and friends. I thought I could do it all and I definitely overcommitted myself. ADVICE Do not start to plan immediately. Take the time to enjoy being engaged and let your hopes and dreams for a wedding emerge organically.

With spectacular 360 degree views of Mount Wilson, we danced, ate great food. and laughed with all of our closest family and friends.
