Eve & Don February 7th

From the bride: THE PROPOSAL We met in Afghanistan, of all places, in 2012 while we were both deployed (Army) to Camp Phoenix Kabul. We stayed in touch and started dating a couple of years later. The proposal was a dream! We were in Ireland hiking in Wicklow Mountain National Park. Don asked me to join him on a cliff edge to enjoy the view. He shared some beautiful feelings with me, including “loving me even more than burritos” (he is a super fan of Mexican food) and before I knew it he was on one knee with a beautiful ring asking me to marry him. I was honestly so surprised that he did not get an answer for what he says was “an eternity.” THE CEREMONY We held our ceremony in the Timber House at Devil’s Thumb Ranch, a glass building with 360 degree views of the snow covered mountains. My favorite memory was Don’s vows; Don is stoic and generally a man of few words. His vows were incredibly personal and sincere and touched my heart in a way that I was not expecting. There was not a dry eye in the room, including mine.

Looking back, I wish we would of recorded the ceremony. It was even more special than I ever imagined and it breaks my heart that we do not have it recorded.

THE DECOR The wooden posts were draped with cream swags and beautiful crystal chandeliers hung from the wooden cross beams. The tables were covered in candles, flowers (deep blue anemone, cymbidium orchids, hydrangeas, roses, eucalyptus, thistle, and ornamental kale), and the cutest cream wooden birds atop a moss table runner. The favors were a reflection of us and the things we love (Jack Daniels whiskey and Chocolove chocolate). 8


ADVICE Include the things which you love and make you happy; let your choices be a reflection of the two of you. Most importantly, have fun planning it TOGETHER. We strongly recommend hiring a wedding planner.

Jana & Philip July 20th

From the bride: WHY COLORADO We LOVE traveling to the Colorado mountains. We spend a lot of time in Colorado and knew it was close to home here in Kansas City so people could make the trip easier by driving rather than flying to a beach somewhere.

THE WEEKEND For us, we wanted our focus to be on the “vacation” for our guests and family. We did a scavenger hunt in town, where people had to do certain hikes, go up Trail Ridge Road, eat certain ice cream at local ice cream shops, and tons more fun things. We had a Kindle for the prize so we could really encourage our guests to see the entire Grand Lake area. We spent a lot of time playing volleyball, we had a barbecue dinner on the property the night before and had a bonfire under the big open sky, talking about all our funny stories we had with our friends growing up. We threw a lot of wedding “rules” out the window and made sure our wedding was “us”. It turned out perfect!

THE WILDLIFE We prayed for the moose to come to our wedding because we’d never seen a moose in all of our travels. And lo and behold, about 3-4 HUGE moose arrived right before our ceremony. Our guests were taking selfies with them as they found their seats surrounded by the Colorado river. The moose stayed through the ceremony and the beginning of the reception. It was amazing.

THE RECEPTION My bridesmaids and I spent a few happy hours creating the overhanging textured tissue paper balls, we had some splashes of paper flowers here and there. The tables were adorned with watercolor linens, vintage china, and colorful florals and succulents. All our tables were named after a location we had visited alongside our trip photographs. One table being California, where Philip proposed to me. I surprised Philip with a cigar bar that contained cigars I purchased from my travels around the world that previous year. Our favors were little glass jars with succulents. 14


LOOKING BACK, our wedding was a dream. All we wanted was our closest loved ones with us on a vacation with God’s landscape as our decor and we got it. ADVICE When planning your wedding, remember that there are no rules. Your wedding day should be a direct reflection of you both and your personalities. 15

Nicky & Karl July 11th

From the bride: THE WEDDING WEEKEND We turned our wedding into a mini family vacation. Many of our family and friends arrived days ahead and we spent many meals together. We rented out the theater at the ranch one evening with popcorn and watched “Father of the Bride” and “What About Bob”. The night of the rehearsal dinner, we rented out the large game room with pizza, snacks and drinks for our guests and played pool, duck pin bowling, etc. THE CEREMONY We were married in a meadow with the mountains as our backdrop. We adorned the ceremony structure with clusters of sunflowers and a crystal chandelier. During the ceremony, one lonely cloud showed up and dumped on us so umbrellas were hastily handed out as we exchanged vows under the raindrops. Fortunately, as a bride, I was so happy to be getting married that I giggled instead of cried.

We loved being surrounded by a beautiful, pristine mountain setting.

THE DÉCOR Elegant and modern surrounded by bling and chandeliers with deep pink orchids, soft purple and white roses, purple hydrangeas, and picasa calla lilies. Soft drapes cascaded from the beams to soften the angles and lines of the barn. The cake was adorned with horseshoes. Our favors were custom s’mores accompanied by a love poem for our guests.

Ashley & Chris August 8th

From the bride: THE STYLE Flying Dog Ranch was the main source of our inspiration. The gardens and surrounding landscape are outrageously beautiful, so we wanted to keep the decorations minimal and let our guests enjoy the scenery. We both just wanted a laid-back, low-stress, informal, outdoor wedding without a lot of pomp and circumstance, which is also kind of how we live. THE CEREMONY Chris and I wrote the whole ceremony script together, except for our vows which we kept secret. We read a lot of other ceremonies and borrowed and adapted the parts that were most meaningful to us.

Exchanging our vows was my favorite moment, because it was such a heartfelt part of the ceremony that we were each experiencing for the first time.

THE DECOR We kept it simple. I wanted an eclectic set of blue and clear vases, so I saved pretty jars from the kitchen, and bought lots of thrift store vases, and chose some of them to paint and stain light blue - the vases ended up making perfect centerpieces once the florist brought the flowers. Our favors were jars of honey made by the honeybees that visit the Flying Dog Ranch’s lavender fields. 26


THE ENTERTAINMENT Chris and I both love games — on evenings and weekends, we’re usually home playing Scrabble or doing a puzzle. At parties and family events we usually bring a board game everyone can enjoy. So garden games were the perfect way to invite our friends and family into our world for an afternoon. 27


Ashley & Chris ADVICE My best advice would be to cultivate a go-with-the-flow attitude. Crazy unexpected things go wrong with every wedding. In the weeks leading up to our wedding date, I calmed my nerves by telling myself that as long as we got the marriage certificate signed and filed, the wedding day was a success. I must have jinxed myself, because when we arrived at the courthouse, we were told that my two bridesmaids had signed where we were meant to sign, and Chris and I had signed as witnesses! It was a perfectly honest mistake and we were able to self-solemnize using a new certificate at the courthouse, but it reminded me that literally ANYTHING can go wrong—even the one thing you hope doesn’t—and it’s still okay.

Our first dance was “Walking After You” by the Foo Fighters - it’s a really beautiful romantic song.

Stephanie & Richard September 6th

From the bride: WHY STEAMBOAT The mountains represent an escape from our hectic city lives to someplace we both feel centered. THE STYLE I always dreamed of having an outdoor tented reception with the mountains as a beautiful backdrop. Richard and I both like upscaled rustic touches, and our wedding decor was a reflection of that. THE MORNING OF Richard and I woke up early and met downstairs in the hotel lobby. We knew the day would be a blur, and we wanted to take a moment to be with one another, just the two of us. It was one of my favorite moments from the entire weekend. We just sat on the couch and talked, I don’t really remember what we talked about, but just to have that time together, made everything slow down, and let me be present that day. THE CEREMONY We stood on an outcropping at Lake Catamount under a birch arch framed by the mountains. We picked non-traditional, personal music for the ceremony. The officiant was one of our closest friends, and he set the tone with an easy, heartfelt delivery of the vows Richard and I wrote together. MEMORABLE MOMENT My favorite moment was when Richard decided to “throw out” the vows he had written and improvise. “Peace; that is what I feel when I am with you,” he said. At that moment,everyone else disappeared, and it was just us on the lake. I will never forget that. 31


THE DÉCOR Crystal chandeliers were suspended from the top of the tent and cast a beautiful glow throughout. We hung the guests’ place cards on a distressed vintage door that was placed to the side of the tent entrance. We custom ordered photos printed on wood blocks, discs, and slabs for the cocktail tables, mantle, bars, and vintage door. 32


The tables were decorated with natural flower arrangements made with white hydrangeas, garden roses, dahlias, veronica, ranunculus and accented with anemones, blush garden roses, thistle, and scabiosa pods. There were also hints of privet berry, seeded eucalyptus and dusty miller silvery foliage. Half of the table arrangements were set in low birch boxes while the other half were in tall vases. Each table had votives set in tiered birch holders to enhance the lighting 33


Stephanie & Richard LOOKING BACK There was only one mishap that ended up being pretty funny. Richard and I were in the middle of the golf course taking photos under the stars when all of the sudden the sprinklers went off. We had to race through the sprinklers to make it back to the tent, and ended up getting drenched in the process. It was really funny, and will definitely be something we always remember.

ADVICE Enjoy the process. After you get engaged, take a few days to enjoy your time with your fiance. It really is a magical time, but planning a wedding can be stressful. Just don’t forget what it is all about. During the wedding weekend, you will be pulled in a million different directions. Everyone has come to see you and celebrate with you, but don’t forget that the weekend is really just about you and your fiance.

Emily & Jordan September 26th

From the bride: THE STYLE We wanted our friends and family to be able to enjoy a fall weekend in the mountains. Details were fun to plan, but not the focus. THE CEREMONY The ceremony took place in an open pasture with the Collegiate Peaks laden with yellowing aspens as the backdrop. Guests sat on hay bales covered in white linens we picked up at thrift stores. My mom and dad both walked me down the aisle to a remixed “Canon in D” by the Piano Guys. We wrote our own vows, and I’m told there wasn’t a dry eye. Our unity ceremony was communion, which we took with homemade bread and wine mixed by our moms (1 white and 1 red, representing the blending of our families). We walked back down the aisle to “You Make My Dreams” by Hall & Oates. We greeted family and friends casually in the pasture after the ceremony.

It was the most incredible fall day. The sun shone directly on us during the ceremony. It was a full moon that night, and a blood moon the next night. It felt so surreala real spiritual and celestial experience.

THE RECEPTION Jordan’s dad cut slices of pine for the centerpieces and for our guest book. One of my close friends brewed two batches of home brew for the reception. There was a coconut beer that was to die for and killer margs that were strong enough to require a warning (drink with caution). My bridesmaids and I did all of the decorating in the barn the day of the wedding. My family all pitched in to make homemade marinara sauce for favors. We traveled to my hometown in Iowa and spent the whole weekend boiling and peeling dozens of pounds of tomatoes, cooking and canning the sauce. Dinner was salad and pizza served by a food truck. For fun, I went thrifting to find some goofy mugs for guests to use (paper is boring and wasteful).


ADVICE Your wedding should not be just one more thing you stress about in life. It should be FUN, memorable, exciting, and creative. It’s your opportunity to express to your new spouse how much you love him/her and to all of your friends and family how important they are to you. Don’t forget the focus or get caught up in details that don’t matter in the grand scheme.

Taylor & Jack October 3rd

From the bride: Jack and I met in College. We both played college soccer and met at a party. Jack and I love to hike. He took me up to Hanging Lake and proposed under the waterfall. I’ve never seen him so nervous. Still makes me smile thinking about it.

THE STYLE I was set on getting married on a farm with a big red barn as Jack and I hope to live on a farm someday. I chose a color palette of burgundy with shades of pink.

We made sure our love was expressed throughout the entire day.

THE CEREMONY We got married out in a meadow with rolling hills and mountains as our backdrop. Old antique doors framed the aisle way. As I began my walk down the aisle, the moment the doors opened, I had instant tears seeing Jack and the look on his face. I felt so much love.

THE DÉCOR My mom and I collected the vases and made all the candles. The barn had hay bails covered with antique clothes for people to sit on. Pictures of Jack and I were on display on old doors. Cocktail tables with old candles and strings of lights made the barn sparkle. Jack made our centerpieces out of trees around our property. 42


FAVORITE DETAIL Jack wrote 22 things he loved about me, then my sister hand wrote every quote on a small chalkboard that was displayed on every table.

Taylor & Jack THE RECEPTION Our dinner took place in the meadow. When dinner was finished, we moved to the old red barn where we danced the night away with our family and friends.

I think we smiled and giggled all night. There isn’t a day that’s goes by that we don’t talk about our big day. It was a dream.

ADVICE Enjoy every moment. This is the best day of your life. Have fun planning and leave the stress part out of it. At the end of the day, all that matters is you have true love and get to spend the rest of your life with that person.

Lauren & John September 26th

From the bride: When John and I were seventeen, we met at a stoplight. John followed me until I pulled over, got out and we started talking. Ever since then, I always hoped that I’d marry John. Nine years later, John proposed at the stoplight where we first met. Except this time, he was standing on the side of the road in a blizzard with a sign that said, “Lauren, will you marry me?” THE DESIGN John and I are both from Colorado, so having a Colorado wedding was no question. John and I are both very down-toearth people who love all things fall. We wanted the wedding to feel like fall in Colorado without the straight rustic feel that is typical of many Colorado weddings. We decided to fancy up many of the earthy tones and elements with black and gold accents (GO Buffs, too!!)

THE CEREMONY We were married outside under a stunningly gigantic tree in Grace Chapel. We rented pews, a wooden aisle runner, and a set of wooden doors. I’m so glad we were able to have the doors because it allowed for the big “reveal” that can’t typically happen with an outdoor wedding. We read traditional vows and ended the ceremony with the Irish Benediction, which I find so meaningful.

THE GUEST BOOK I wanted photos of all of our guests in the guest book instead of just signatures, so we set-up an instaMax camera that produced instant photos. My cousin graciously helped take pictures of everyone! THE TABLES We hand wrote the seating chart using chalk paint on a large mirror. For table numbers, I bought black double picture frames and attached beautiful gold painted cursive numbers. For each number, the frame included one photo of myself and John at that age. 48


THE BOUQUET My bouquet was made of burgundy dahlias, green mini hydrangeas, succulents, burgundy berries, small brown lotus pods, seeded eucalyptus, burgundy caspia and pink mink protea. The stems were wrapped with the sleeve of my mom’s wedding dress. THE FAVORS We handmade 300 French macarons to send home with our guests. We bought the macaron kit from Bed, Bath & Beyond and watched Martha Stewart videos. It was hard work, but our guests loved the personal touch. 49


Lauren & John LATE NIGHT SNACK We served Pinkberry frozen yogurt because who doesn’t love frozen yogurt served up fresh after a long night of dancing! It was the perfect late night snack and our guests are still talking about how much they loved the Pinkberry to this day! ADVICE Enjoy being engaged! Don’t let any of the wedding planning stress you out because it’s all good and you only get to do it once! Be kind to your partner and remember to appreciate one another.

Take in the wedding day because it really does go by so fast!

Maureen & Shawn September 12th

From the bride: THE STYLE Our wedding was a mix of traditional elements with a definite mountain feel. Our color palette was a mix of greens and neutrals. I added in antlers and a little sparkle with gold accents.

THE CEREMONY Our traditional Catholic ceremony was held at Holy Name Church. This beautiful church was just finished in 2015 and it was the perfect place to kick off our celebration. Shawn jokes that he was waiting so long to propose because the church wasn’t done being built yet! I put a lot of thought into the music that would be used during the ceremony. I went to an all-girls Catholic high school, and one of the songs that we frequently sang in glee club was ‘Rain Down’. We got the opportunity to sign our marriage certificate on the altar, and I thought ‘Rain Down’ was the perfect song for that part of the mass. I could hear my high school friends and some of my family belting it out. I think it was a nice surprise for the guests and it brought a tear to my eye!

I had a few veil malfunctions. My husband stepped on it during the ceremony and it jerked my head back. That caused a lot of laughs. My veil also got stuck on a post as we were doing our grand exit from the church. It flew off, but I just kept going!


ADVICE Get a wedding coordinator! It is a small chunk of your wedding budget, but it makes a huge difference on the day of the wedding. My wedding coordinator was also my florist, which was even better. I did most of the planning myself, but she created the timeline for the day and managed all of the vendors on the day of the wedding. I was also able to hand off all of my ceremony and reception extras to her the week before the wedding and she took care of transporting everything to Steamboat. She took care of all of the setup of my items and ensured that everything was under control. I was able to spend the week of my wedding relaxing and enjoying my time with family and friends. 54

Ashley & Tommy October 24th

From the bride: THE STYLE We wanted to play off of the natural beauty of Colorado – the leaves in the fall and the mountains in the background. We chose a color palette of peach, mint green and gold. We tried to personalize everything. We created all of the printed materials, set up a trail mix bar during cocktail hour (we thought it was a great way to make it Colorado-y), made homemade jams for favors, created all of our signage, made the cakes and the wooden ceremony arch. We both love projects and being creative.

I loved the photo time with Tommy just after the ceremony. It was the first time all day when it was just us and we got to bask in the fact that we were married! The rest of the day felt like such a whirlwind that it was nice to be able to just be together.

THE CEREMONY The ceremony was held outside on the lawn, which we were really nervous about doing in late October, but it worked out that the weather couldn’t have been better. The sun was shining and our guests stayed warm.

THE DECOR We borrowed a bunch of mismatched china that gave the room a personal “family dinner� vibe. I also loved that all of the details were done ourselves. I loved being able to have pride in creating everything from the ring box to the drink menu.

THE FAVORS We made jams for the party favors. Our way to have fun with the planning was to use it as an excuse to learn new skills – I’ve always wanted to learn how to can jam, so what better time to do it. 59


Ashley & Tommy LOOKING BACK I actually cried more at my rehearsal dinner. I was so overwhelmed the day before the wedding that I was a basket case all day. It’s a little overwhelming to see the evidence of so many people traveling from out of state to be there – you really feel the love, and that was moving in a way I didn’t expect. Luckily, I was a little more put together on the actual wedding day. I think the only time I cried on the wedding day was during my dance with my dad. He’s my favorite person in the world.

ADVICE Play to your strengths! I am an information gatherer who is organized, and Tommy works in sales. I was the one who would put together the initial spreadsheet of options, and then begin calling the vendors that I thought might work. I’d fill in the blanks as far as what they offered and for what price. I’d then let them know that I had to talk to Tommy, and he would make the call back to negotiate a deal that worked for them, us, and the budget.

Gretchen & Duncan September 6th

From the bride: THE STYLE Our inspiration came from Duncan’s Scottish roots and the western wedding location which we blended into a rustic highland garden party celebration. The men in the groom’s family already owned their own kilts so we drew the color palette (deep purple, fuschia, hunter green, navy) from those. We decorated with antlers and served local Colorado fare like elk sliders and famous Colorado peaches. THE CEREMONY Everything about the day was personal. We deconstructed the traditional ceremony entirely and made it our own. It felt very personal without being mushy. We wrote our vows together and said the same ones. I liked that because it felt traditional, but personalized to us.

The weather was somehow perfectly glorious, like that moment with the sun rays in the beginning of the Lion King movie.

We had a bagpiper for the ceremony who piped everyone in and out and then led all of the guests to the reception area. It lended so much gravitas to the whole affair.

Gretchen & Duncan THE DÉCOR My favorite detail was the gold antler table settings. Duncan’s parents scored a huge lot of antlers in an auction in Missouri and I spent many happy afternoons lovingly spray painting them gold. We split them among the family after the wedding and they make great decorations at Christmas. FIRST DANCE I was so nervous about the first dance and just thought it would resolve itself, which it didn’t. Duncan waltzed beautifully, but I never learned. After about a minute, we dissolved into laughter and gave the DJ the “cut it” sign. It was a fail, but a funny one we will never forget. ADVICE Hire a day-of wedding planner. It might feel expensive in the beginning, but it is so worth it. Plus, once you start getting catering and alcohol estimates, the cost for a planner will feel like pennies. Choose to work with good people and you will have a fabulous wedding day. Also, have a clear budget before you look at anything.

Honestly, we’ve never experienced anything like our wedding day—it is a cliché because it’s true. It was a day long adrenaline rush fueled by the biggest out pouring of love we’ve ever experienced. It rocked.

From the bride: We met and got engaged in Keystone. We figured why not come full circle and have a mountain wedding. Silverthorne is a great central location with plenty of activities and accommodations for everyone to enjoy. THE VENUE We chose the Silverthorne Pavilion, which we highly recommend. The rental time allotted was awesome. The venue itself is beautiful and gives you that mountain feel with a price that is noticeably lower than a ski resort or any foothills area venues. THE CEREMONY The warmth of the wooded architecture and bulky metal accents in the Silverthorne Pavilion set the perfect mountain mood. We had the natural light gleaming down from the sky lights on a perfectly cold winter day. Our altar was a ski chair (we are avid snowboarders). After the ceremony, the snow began to fall (the one thing Ryan wished for on our wedding day). THE RECEPTION We had a casual BBQ dinner. The cake was cut and we didn’t even get a full piece because we were having to much fun to stop and eat. The dance floor was never empty and all the beer and wine got drank. It was the best party ever! ADVICE Find the venue, photographer, and dress first. And realize that all the little things will fall into place. If something really is forgotten the day of the wedding, the only person that will know is you. So don’t ruin your life planning and stressing, just have fun.
