LETTER FROM THE EDITORS The Wedding Editorialist is excited to dedicate this issue to Ashley and Will. A wedding is a celebration of a relationship that already exists; one so special and so deeply committed, that it only feels right to celebrate publicly. Before a wedding, there are just two people, but after, there is something more. There is a couple, a unit, two people with a shared commitment and dedication to living life together in all it’s forms. Here at the Wedding Editorialist we get to see and share so many beautiful stories. Stories of love, of romance, of passion. Each detail of the wedding tells us something about this new couple. And from the details we are sharing with you here, there is no doubt in our minds that you will fall deeply in love with Ashley and Will. Just like we did. Just as they did with each other. With love always‌. The Editorialists

OUR LOVE STORY Sixteen years ago, back in the days of chubby faces, braces, and tucked in polo shirts, we met as sixth graders at Faith Lutheran Jr./Sr. High School. Through the seven years we spent together in middle, high school and beyond, we became closer as friends as the years went on. Fortunately, even with life paths that sent both of us in vastly different directions, we stayed great friends throughout college, and both moved back to Las Vegas after graduation. Between English class, prom, football games, bad college decisions, great career advances and more‌we had seen the best and the worst of 05 | WEDDING EDITORIALIST
each other. Staying friends for as long as we have has certainly paid off because we quickly realized that we have a love for one another that is so much more than friendship. Although we were once awkward ten-year-old friends, we are now twenty-somethings in love committed to happily ever after.

HOW HE ASKED As a wedding designer and a previous wedding planner, it is very hard to plan something for someone as type-A, perfectionist, control freak like me. I plan everything! So Will thought, what better a way to get her to cooperate and to surprise her if she plans her own proposal. And that is precisely what happened. A few weeks prior, my dear friend Jodi from J.Anne Photography called me and asked if I would help her put together a styled shoot. We talked back and forth about who would model, what they would wear, what kind of decor and florals needed to be involved, where, when and everything in between! We came to the conclusion that we would have our friends Jace & Olivia be the stand-in “Bride & Groom” as they were just recently married and would be more than willing to go out to the middle of the desert with us for a random photo shoot. Jodi kindly ask me if I would be willing to stand-in as the “bridesmaids and groomsmen” in the shoot along with Will and my little sister, Kelly… with much
hesitation, I finally decided to get dolled up and be in front of the camera for a change. The day of the photo shoot arrived. The girls sat at the dinner table laughing and enjoying being pampered by the team at Your Beauty Call while the boys sat in the living room watching sports. I was so excited for what I thought was to be a styled shoot- just a fun evening with friends, hanging out with our favorite photographer, and pretending to be the highest paid models in town! Little did I know, this Saturday evening was soon to start a new chapter in my love story with Will- my best friend of 15 years. I arrived at the photo shoot location and was in complete awe of how beautiful it was– the sunset, the desert in its purest form was just breathtaking. After a few group photos and bride and groom shots, Jodi asked if Will and I would just take a few relaxed and candid “bridal party” pictures. We obeyed her wishes and after weddingeditorialist.com | 08

a few photos, she asked us to face away from each other and on the count of three, she would ask us to turn around and face one another. I turned around, faced Will, and he said to me, “You know this isn’t a styled shoot right? It’s time.” At that instant, I knew that this was about to be a moment that would forever change my life. For the first few seconds I was in such shock that I had no idea what was really happening, until he so perfectly got down on one knee, looked me straight in the eyes and said, “Ashley, I love you. Will you marry me?” I didn’t want to ever forget the emotions of pure love that I felt in that very moment. After saying “YES!” and a celebratory sunset champagne toast, we headed back into town where I was greeted by a surprise engagement party complete with our friends and family from across the country. For so many people to be involved in helping create such a beautiful moment for the both of us is what truly made my heart sing. It was certainly a day that dreams are made of!

WHY THE BACARA I have always dreamt of a destination wedding in a place where my family and friends could gather somewhere beautiful and wouldn’t have to worry about work the next day—to take a moment for themselves, relax and enjoy life! After visiting the central coast of California a few times, Will and I fell in love with the relaxing yet super fun vibe of Santa Barbara. You get a great mix of what southern California has to offer with its beautiful beaches and laid-back culture with a mix of nearby vineyards and gorgeous mountainous views from northern California. We instantly had a love affair with Bacara the second we walked on property! After visiting a few other venues, our last stop was Bacara and when we walked the ceremony space, it completely 15 | WEDDING EDITORIALIST
took my breath away (Will had the same reaction too, but his mind was set on visiting the pool overlooking the ocean for a beer.) We also thought about the excuse of being able to go back for anniversary vacations once a year… any excuse to get us back will do!

THINGS TO SEE STATE STREET SHOPPING
GOLF AT SANDPIPER
No trip to Santa Barbara would be complete without a healthy dose of shopping. And shopping here comes with its own distinct flair. In Santa Barbara, a day spent shopping could just as easily be billed “exercise,” thanks to plenty of walking and fresh air. Along the streets of downtown you’ll find some of the most distinct and diverse shopping around, from consignment stores to gift and souvenir shops, open-air markets to galleries. With the beautiful landscape and architecture as a backdrop, a short trip to downtown can easily become an all-day, marathon shopping trip. Learn more about State Street at downtownsb.org
Located next door to Bacara, Sandpiper offers breathtaking ocean and mountain views from every hole. The championship Santa Barbara golf course has been rated by Golf Digest in the top twenty-five public golf courses in the country. It was designed by William F. Bell and opened in 1972 featuring beautiful rolling fairways and challenging greens in a seaside links-style layout. Sandpiper’s dynamic design attracts players of all skill levels, including players of the highest caliber. Tee times and other golf arrangements can be made through Bacara’s concierge, or by calling the resort in advance at 805.571-3012 or visit sandpipergolf.com.
Downtown Santa Barbara
GO FOR A HIKE The Santa Ynez Mountain range is one of only two in the world that runs east to west, eventually spilling into the ocean on the breathtaking Gaviota Coast. So throw the necessities in your backpack and hit the trail because the view is about to get incredible. Choose from several trails that wind along flowing creeks shaded by California bay, sycamore and oak tree forests before you eventually peak out above the canopy where chaparral-choked mountainsides sweep across the entire range. Catch sight of Santa Barbara’s red tile roofs, white sand beaches, and the Pacific beyond it with breathtaking, panoramic views.
THE FUNK ZONE Santa Barbara’s Funk Zone has become a favorite in recent years. Over the past few decades, this district, which spans the area between the ocean and Highway 101 and is adjacent to the Amtrak station, has enjoyed an upswell of boutique tasting rooms, cafes, galleries, and shops that cater to Santa Barbara’s contemporary side. Converted warehouses and buildings decorated with graffiti murals and contemporary art pieces set the tone for this hopping section of town. Surfboard shapers, winemakers and up-andcoming chefs all practice their crafts here. The urban wine trail map is available at urbanwinetrailsb.com.

VISIT THE BEACH While Santa Barbara is well known for its expansive, pristine beaches, it has just as much space to offer inland as well. Santa Barbara’s beaches and parks are a testament to the city’s affinity for fresh air and outdoor fun. Starting at the Pacific, Santa Barbara is home to miles of public beaches, many of which serve as a launch pad for making a splash. Surf some of the most renowned breaks in the world, or stand-up paddleboard in the protected waters of Butterfly Bay in Montecito. Cabrillo Boulevard connects East and West Beach, which are hot spots for pick-up volleyball games, picnics, and an afternoon date with a good book. Catch the art fair every Sunday.

BEHIND THE SCENES THE DRESS SHOPPING
After visiting a handful of dress shops from Las Vegas to Southern California and beyond Ashley finally found the dress of her dreams! With her mom Jackie, her sister Kelly, and bridesmaid Courtney, Ashley traveled to Salt Lake City, UT and stopped in at Alta Moda Bridal when she found the one.
THE INVITATION DESIGNING
Suzanne from She Paperie met with Ashley almost monthly to come up with some fabulous paper designs for the big day! Cotton paper, letterpress, silk ribbon and a hand drawn custom picture of Bacara—it all came together so beautifully with the help of Ashley’s co-worker and dear friend, Colin McCrae. 27 | WEDDING EDITORIALIST

COLIN McCRAE ABOUT THE ARTIST
Colin has worked at Destinations by Design as the Director of Creative Art & Design for 10+ years and is the master of beautiful hand drawn renderings to help our clients visualize their dream coming true. Colin was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma, better known as bone marrow cancer, in August of last year. Prior to finding out such devastating news, Ashley had asked Colin to hand draw the wedding venue so that it was done by someone who she admired and knew well. The focus was then to call on God to heal Colin and allow him to be well again after such news. Ashley knew good and well that Colin did not have the energy and or capability to draw while he was undergoing treatment and did not want or expect him to continue the drawing. But to her surprise, while sitting at her desk one day, she had received an email with the drawing along with a candid picture of Colin in the hospital as he was receiving treatment with the nurses oohing and awing around him! He told Ashley that during treatment, it kept him sane to do something so special for someone. To say this drawing is special to us is an understatement. Thank you, Colin!

Our Catering Manager, Katie, had no idea what she was getting herself into with Will and I! The tasting began when we placed breadsticks in our mouths to look like walruses and Will ate not one, but two servings of fish tacos to make sure they “weren’t poisonous.” After we made our decisions, we did a little tour of Bacara via golf cart and stopped by the pool bar for a drink in the sun.
