Cave Mountain, upon which Windham Mountain sits today, was identified by the State of New York in 1950 as a site to build a ski area, because it offered perfect exposure and slope gradients. In 1960, a group of private investors purchased the land and created Cave Mountain Ski Area. Since opening, the resort has had three different names. It started as Cave Mountain Ski Resort. Snowtime Corporation purchased the resort in 1981 and renamed it Ski Windham. With the re-purchase by private owners in 2005, it became Windham Mountain. The first snowmaking system was installed in 1963. It covered 12 acres of terrain. Today Windham Mountain has over 270 snow guns and covers 98% of its skiable acres. Starting from bare ground, the Mountain can open the A and D lifts and the What’s Next, Wolverine and Wooly Bear trails in as little as 48 hours if conditions are good for snowmaking. Windham’s most powerful snowmaking gun, if left running in one position, can create a 25-foot-deep pile of snow within 24 hours. Windham Mountain’s first lift ticket cost $3.
