Video Recording > Setting Video Format

Video Recording

To access the Video Recording functions, click on the Video Recording icon on the main toolbar and you will see the Video Recording pages. Click on the Video tab and you will see the available options and settings for that function below.

Setting Video Format AVI Options Compres sor The video output file format in Take-1 Recorder is AVI. There are several parameters you can set to control the quality and size of your captured video file. To choose the compressor, click the down arrow to select one of video encoding methods for the video file. Click the Configure button to select available compressor options. Microsoft Video 1 is the default compressor. Quality You can use the slider to select the quality. High quality image usually has larger file size than low quality image does. Set Key Frames This setting specifies the key frame rate. When a frame is saved in an AVI file, they can either be saved as a full frame, or only partially as a difference to the previous frame. The key frame rate specifies how often full frames are written to the AVI file. Higher settings result in coarser control (and faster seeking), and smaller file size. Lower settings result in finer control (and slower seeking), and larger file size.

Frame Rate The Frame Rate determines the capture frame rate. It dictates how long the program will wait after capturing each frame. The recommended frame rate is one frame every 10 milliseconds (1 millisecond = 1/1000 second) or 100 frames per second, which is smooth enough to see what is happening and also leads to small file size. It is the default play back frame rate. If you notice the system response is slow, you should drop the frame rate. You can use the default frame rate (100 frames per second) or set your own CFE (Capture Frame Every X milliseconds) and PBR (Play Back Rate in frames per second). For "real time" video (play back at the same

Page 1 6

speed as capture), the product of the two rates (CFE and PBR) must result in 1000. You can check off the Auto Mode option in Take-1 and enter only one number to have the program automatically calculate and synchronize the other number for you when Play Back is at the same speed as in Capture Frame. To avoid video play back being out-of-sync with audio, it is important the product of the two rates (CFE and PBR) be 1000. Realtime Video A real time video is when the play back speed is the same as the capture speed. For example, if you want to create a 3 minutes video from a 3 minutes "real time" clip with a PBR at 25 frames per second (FPS). In this case, you need to capture 4500 frames (3*60*25) in 3 minutes, the program will capture frame every 40 milliseconds (3*60*1000 milliseconds/4500 frames). The product of the two rates (CFE=25) and (PBR=40) results in 1000. You can check off the Auto Mode option, enter only one number, and have the two numbers automatically synchronized for you. Time-laps e Video A time-lapse video is, on the other hand, one with much higher play back speed than that in frame capture. For example, create a 3 minutes video from a 3 hours "real time" clip. For a video with PBR at 25 FPS, you need the same 4500 frames (3*60*25). However, to capture 4500 frames in 3 hours, the program will capture one frame every 2400 milliseconds (3*60*60*1000 milliseconds/4500 frames). In this case, turn off Auto Mode, and enter 25 for PBR and 2400 for CFE respectively.

You can check off the Audio recording using MCI option on the Audio page or click Audio Toolbar icon to include audio as part of the capture. Click on the Sound button to open the Sound Control applet to select recording options.

Page 2 0

Interleave Video and Audio A typical video file will contain both audio and video. If all the video was at the start and all the audio at the end the player would have to seek back and forth to fetch the video and audio to play it back. This will usually work on a hard drive because they can seek quickly, but on a slow device such as CD-ROM you won't get smooth playback. The solution is to interleave the audio and video data. This will also allow better synchronization of your video and sound content. The interleave factor determines the amount of interleaving in your video . Normally, this value is specified in number of frames. A value of 1 frame will mean full interleave. Larger values will mean less interleaving. You can also specify the Interleave factor in milliseconds (ms). If you choose to Interleave a movie every 100ms (1/10 of a second) for a movie with a capture rate of 200 frames per second (Capture Frames Every 1000ms/200=5ms), the Interleave factor will be equivalent to Interleave every 20 frames (1/10.of 200 frames).

The ScreenDraw Tool With the ScreenDraw Tool, you can draw all kinds of arrows, frames, highlights, marks, lines, circles, cut outs, or write text on the screen to emphasize or clarify the text or diagrams on the screen, so the interpretation or demonstration can be clearer. You can draw on the recording area, capture area, or in full screen mode as specified. All changes are 'non-destructive' to the screen, meaning it is in your recording or capture only and will not alter the original contents. Once you are out of the drawing mode or the recording mode, all changes are gone. To save the drawings in your recording or capture, stop the recording and save it before exiting the drawing mode. The drawings will become part of your recording file or the image capture file and cannot be removed. In the Drawing mode, all other windows in the drawing area are locked and will not respond to mouse clicks or keyboard actions except for drawing. In other words, if you click a button or press a key, for example, it will not cause the button or the normal key action. You will find, however, the Take-1 ScreenDraw shortcut keys, which works only when you are in the Drawing mode, very handy.
