After kiting quite some perfect flat-water lagoons, we reached this bay. I almost couldn’t believe that. We kited with 5 and 7 in a wide bay and especially right in the waves. Even if it didn’t look that big, I felt them breaking really powerful. Steep and smooth. The wind was even blowing in a way, that I could take lefts and rights. – Great! The next day we found an ideal freestyle lagoon close to St. Francis Bay, complicated to find, but fortunately we already knew a local kiter and followed him. I even tried to kite without wetsuit, but I got freezing pretty soon, so I took a break and had time to take some pictures of the freestyling JN team and also of the local guys who pulled high tricks. But as soon as the wind got a little bit less, the kites were too underpowered. Cape Alguhas. I’d love it to stay around this famous waveriding place, but the wind forecast didn’t look too good and we had to think about our flight back home from Cape Town. So we said good-bye to Jeffreys Bay and went west again. We couldn’t omit to take a look at the southernmost point of Africa at Cape Alguhas, because we’d heard that there are great secret spots around. And yes, we could imagine it when we saw the longest sandy beach of the southern hemisphere – but: we were missing the wind. The last days in South Africa have been really nice. We kited a lot and the training was going pretty good. The wind was wonderful and we had many good sessions and lots of fun on the water – so much kiting and so many different conditions to train. Let’s see then how we can profit from it when it comes to the next events and competitions. We also did some cool and chilly stuff as safari, sightseeing, shopping, relaxing and meeting friends. I think South Africa is one of the greatest places on earth. More pics and impressions on: www.leandervyvey.com, www. mikekite.tv, www.jn-kites.co.uk. KITESHAPE AND BRIDLE SETUP Mr. Fantastic is shaped as a swept back kite, which allows the rider to adjust the angle of approach like known from other high depower kites, but without the loss of direct steering. The special tip construction allows the kite to be more responsive and gives a satisfying bar feedback combined with moderate bar pressure. The simple bridles are supporting the increased angle of approach, let the kite fly stable and dynamically and aim to offer the wide wind range.

HELLRACER PURE 2 IN 1 Speedriding is a new racy combination of skiing and flying. Attached to a special kite, skiers or snowboarders can glide or float down a slope, taking off in order to avoid obstacles and touching down as they please. Speedriding is highly attractive for pros, expert freeriders, snowkiters and pilots looking for the ultimate in adrenaline kicks. JN produced the first kite ever especially developed for speedriding – the JN Hellracer. Neither a small glider nor a parachute or kite, Hellracer is built for maximum stability at very high speed. It won the ISPO 2007 Brand New Award in all categories.

KITES

50  // 51

Hellracer

Facts Being neither a paraglider, nor a parachute or kite, Hellracer Pure is different: Designed for high speed with maximum stability and a wide flying speed range. That way we utilize the very light material NCV 27 g sail on the whole earth sail. The robust 85 g sky sail prevents UV damage and provides a long time usage. Made out of the high quality NCV, the rips are additionally reinforced where the hang points are sewed in. The Hellracer Pure has a most direct curve handling and reacts without any delay. Nevertheless the steering distance is long enough, so that an uncontrolled stall is almost impossible. Although this version is designed for speedriding on snow with snowboarding and skiing, there is no need to wait for snow as it can be used for wagas on dunes or for ground handling, too. Through our cooperation with Professional Flying Team GmbH we have access to 20 years of experience with skydiving as well as kite and paraglider design. We guarantee a safe, thoroughly optimized glider and harness bundle for maximum fun.

Then this core is sandwiched by vacuum bagging a bamboo veneer top and bottom along the boards’ entire length. While each bamboo veneer is flexy on its own, the I-beam effect created by the two laminates separated by the foam core in the centre makes them work against each other as the board is flexed, resulting in an energetic return once the load is removed. The outer bamboo fiber laminate shell is then also vacuum bagged using the best epoxy resins. As an added bonus, the totally waterproof core stops water seeping into your Opium if you do manage to ding it. Unlike many modern kitefishboards that can feel sluggish compared to a performance shortboard, the Jochum & Nesler Jib fish is closer to a skateboard than anything else. Very responsive once pulled on the wave, while at the same time coming around so fast when you want it to. With a light single concave area between your feet, and the deck volume along the stringer carried far out towards the rails, this board really floats well. But the slight “S” rail brings this volume down to a high performance rail that you can really drive and hold.

Fish’n Chips

Technology

Wave-skim 138*52

Specially for shallow waters and low winds the Fish’n Chips brings strapless fun and skatestyle. With its three rear fins and two optional front fins, it gives you that loose flow feeling you are looking for during a skim session. Thanks to one third of the rear rail’s sharpness, a slight concavity and the swallowtail, the Fish’n Chips can also be used without any fins. It’s not only a board for super sportive kiters, but for the ones who want to make the entry in wavekiting as easy as possible. Additionally the Fish’n Chips is the right choice to train balance and jibing. Construction Surfers started skimboarding when the waves were breaking in shallow water, too close to the beach to ride them. They inventBOARDS

ed a new sport. Looking for a new challenge, kiters tried their loose finless boards and discovered unexpected advantages such as low wind bonus, especially in shallow water, and skatestyleboarding. The Fish’n Chips is a fish-shaped skimboard with three rear fins and two optional at the front. Thanks to its sharp rear rail, slight concavity and swallow tail, it can also be used without fins. Zero scoop, little rocker, light and durable materials made for fantastic skim sessions. Riding strapless, doing jibes, controlling the board under your feet or trying a simple ollie will drastically improve your style and technique. In stronger winds, small waves and choppy water we recommend using it with the three G10 fins.
