Transit-time method: The “rowing boat principle”

Transit-time method: How does it work?

● The ultrasonic pulse -ab- crosses the pipe quicker with the flow than signal -ba-, which is sent against the flow

● Two ultrasonic transducers (sensors) are installed to the outside pipe wall sending and receiving ultrasonic pulses

● Applicable for all acoustically conductive liquids regardless of their electrical conductivity

● The signals travel with and against the direction of the flow ● When there is no flow, both signals arrive without transit-time delay ● A moving fluid will result in a transit-time difference between both signals ● The measured transit-time difference is directly proportional to the flow velocity ● In combination with pipe and medium parameters other measurement units are determined

Sensor positioning made easy

The flow meter recommends the sensor distance

● Indicates correct position of sensors during their installation using audible signals and graphic instructions

Graphic instruction bars of the sensor positioning assistant.

● Signal-to-noise ratio: The fuller the upper signal bar, the more usable signal

Upper bar: Signal-to-noise ratio. Lower bar: Signal quality. Ideally both bars are filled up to the same length and as far to the right as possible. By moving the sensors on the pipe, the line between the two signal bars is moved into a central position above the central indication line underneath the lower bar.

The more central the line is positioned, the better the signalto-noise ratio and signal quality. Page 10 / 22
