Large meals will only make your stomach work harder and it will also take a lot longer to digest the food. This will result in your stomach producing more acids in order to digest the food and this is not something that you want to happen when you lay down. 2. Don’t go to bed on a full stomach. Eat your evening meal at least 2-3 hours before going to bed so that your food can be digested. 3. Avoid drinking alcohol late at night. Alcohol also increases the production of acids and it also relaxes the lower oesophageal sphincter muscle also known as LES – the muscle that is responsible for keeping the stomach acids inside your stomach. When relaxed, the LES will not stop the acids from coming into contact with the esophagus. 4. Avoid or limit the amount of spicy meals such as Mexican and Indian foods as they tend to aggravate symptoms of acid reflux. 5. If you find that your acid reflux is caused by citrus fruits also avoid or limit how much you consume either in their fresh form or in the way of juices. Instead go for lean meats and fresh vegetables either steamed or as a salad, but forget the heavy salad dressings. 7. Drink plenty of water during the day as it will help neutralize the acids in your stomach.
