Experts Share the secrets to amazing Eliminate Dark Circles, Deflate Puffy Eyes


Wake up tired eyes by scoping out products packed with vitamin C, which decreases melanin production, and vitamin K, which breaks down pigment particles in the blood. Bronze, metallic cocoa and copper shades also amp up emerald eyes -- just stick with a formula that’s slightly shimmery instead of disco ball glittery to stop your shadow from calling attention to fine lines and creases.

Tips for Blue Eyes Blue-on-blue won’t do your azure eyes any justice. Instead, use a taupe, tan or warm auburn shadow to exaggerate pool-blue hues. To make your peepers really pop, start by lining the roots of your lashes with a deep mocha-colored pencil.

Tips for Brown Eyes Home in on rich plums and soft lavenders to bolster baby browns. Grab a purplish eye shadow trio and apply all three hues starting with the lightest shade at the inner corner, working to the darkest tone at the outer corner. For a more monochromatic effect, use only the darkest shade across the length of your lids.

Heart disease is the most common cause of death in adult women in the United States and has been so for the last hundred years despite huge advances in care and survival. Even today one in three women will experience a serious cardiac event after the age of fifty. Yet there is no public demand for screening even though cardiac risks dwarf the risks of diseases like breast cancer, where the risk is one in nine. So if the prevalence of heart disease is so high and there is not a simple way to detect it before it becomes advanced and symptomatic then how should we approach this vexing problem? Be assured that the answer to this problem does not reside in a hospital sponsored bus driving around town hawking bargain basement “scans on the go”.

Assume You Are at Risk

The answer to the above question is simple. Assume that you have heart disease in the form of some degree of atherosclerosis, because if you are over the age of twenty then chances are you are right. The majority of Americans already have demonstrable heart disease after their teenage years. The key is to understand one’s risk for cardiovascular disease, and then to reduce the risks that you can modify. There are simple ways to do this.


The first task is ask yourself if you use tobacco in any form. If the answer is yes then you belong to a group of people, roughly 20% of the adult population in the United States. If you smoke or use tobacco, then quit. It is a bad habit that adversely affects all around you. It is very difficult to break this particular drug addiction. But it is by no means impossible. The day after you quit, your risk of a heart attack drops by about fifty percent and continues to decline thereafter.


Physical Inactivity Very few adults in the U.S. exercise to a meaningful degree. Even fewer actually know what the amount of exercise is required that will actually translate into good health. Activity and exercise are not one and the same. Cleaning dishes,

getting dressed, pulling weeds, and grocery shopping are activities. They will not reduce your risk of heart attack of stroke. I wish these types activities counted for some benefit but unfortunately the do not. The American College of Cardiology recommend training your way to:

• Thirty minutes per day. • At least five days per week. • Reaching a level of moderate intensity.

Duration, frequency, intensity. These are the only important goals for exercise. Moderate intensity simply means reaching a level of exercise that requires a brief recovery period after it is complete. High Cholesterol and High Blood Pressure Overwhelming evidence in medical literature has proven a direct correlation linking cholesterol levels and blood pressure levels with the risk of heart attacks and vascular related events. First know what is normal. Normal blood pressure for most people is less than 140/80 mmHg. Cholesterol numbers can be confusing. Some care providers test for dozens of lipid values to better understand risk. All you need to remember is the LDL should be less that 100 mg/dl. If you are a diabetic then your LDL should be less than 70 mg/dl. Next know your own numbers. Know them like you know your bank balance. They are just as important. Each of us should have our cholesterol and blood pressure checked over the age of twenty at least once per year if it remains normal. If its not normal then you need to collaborate with a qualified health care provider to make them normal.

Getting Started

Just like saving money, the sooner you decide to make these changes and become healthier the more benefit you will accrue. But its never too late to begin. The most difficult step is the first.

You are what you eat. You know that, right? Every piece of food you put in your mouth is instantly a part of you. That piece of food can be used to nourish you or harm you. I’m not here to scare you; I’m here to tell you the truth about my lifestyle. I hope to simply explain why I am what I eat. I read Zonya’s article, “To Go Paleo or Not to Go Paleo”, in the November/December issue of Simply Hers. I disagree with some of her points and here’s why... 1. She refers to my lifestyle as a diet. The word diet sucks. Don’t ever let this word come out of your mouth (or into your head!). Change the way you eat and stick with it. This isn’t a diet, this is a lifestyle. Zonya feels individuals aren’t able to stick with the paleo “diet”, and instantly gain weight after the diet is over. There’s the issue. Diets aren’t realistic and last a certain period of time. Don’t limit yourself to a period of time. Plan for your long term health and know that eating perfect isn’t normal. We’re human and we like bad things. It’s our nature. It’s ok to have a cheat day once a week. If you’re active and sticking to your lifestyle throughout the week, what is one cheat going to do? Enjoy yourself, please! You will also learn to appreciate those cheats much more, too, and honestly, won’t crave them as much. 2. She doesn’t understand the science behind foods, and feels grains are ok because God made them. Beans and grains are not the healthiest foods on the planet. Do you know what they do to our insides? It’s sort of like a rash that breaks out, and everything inflames. Society has made us believe that it’s ok to eat these things because they’re low in fat. In reality, society is lacking knowledge. My breakfast the past two years has included eggs, bacon, and fruit. My cholesterol is perfect and my body is happy and full. Some worry about the cholesterol, but consuming cholesterol doesn’t increase cholesterol in the blood. Our bodies can’t absorb cholesterol through food, so eat those egg yolks! Grains have been around as long as agriculture, which really isn’t that long. Grains contain proteins like gluten, and casein in dairy. Both are pro-inflammatory, and have been linked to many chronic stomach problems like Crohn’s Disease. Grains also cause insulin spikes and fat storage, due to their sugars. Grains have to be processed to a point to extract any nutritional value,


a process that our body really sucks at. That’s why grains have to be milled, steeped, boiled, and cooked before you can digest, or tolerate them. Beans, also known as legumes, contain lectins and saponins, which interact with our intestines causing inflammation, autoimmune disorders, and interfere with nutrient absorption. If this isn’t enough information to make you question legumes, dairy, and grains, I don’t know what is. For the record, root veggies are paleo. So are sweet potatoes. 3. She feels I eat too much meat, I’m going to get cancer, and my kidneys will fail. There are no studies that 100% confirm that meat causes cancer. Studies and assumptions have said that eating red meat could cause cancer because it is high in fat. BUT, an eight year study shows that there was no increase in breast and colon cancer, strokes, and heart attacks between a low-fat and non-low-fat diet. Quit eating processed meats and your body will be happy, no matter how much meat you consume. Kidneys are meant to handle protein. It is true that protein works the kidneys, but that’s their job. Research shows that protein doesn’t cause kidney problems; diabetes and high blood pressure do. 4. She feels my lifestyle is restricted. Please. It’s called creativity. I make pizza, brownies, cookies, cakes, pies, and frostings, and they’re all paleo! That’s why God made almond, coconut, and cashew flour, coconut and almond milk, honey, maple syrup, agave nectar, and coconut sugar. Cut out the refined, processed crap, and embrace the natural sugars, healthy flours, and milks. Do some research, read some blogs. You’ll be amazed by all the paleo recipes out there and realize you really aren’t restricted. I don’t eat paleo to lose weight. I eat paleo because chemically, it makes my body function better. Maintaining my weight is an added bonus. It’s not all about weight loss. It’s about living an active, healthy lifestyle, and consuming the right foods like the paleo lifestyle suggests. That’s what our society truly needs to hear.

ew Years resolutions… All to often we make those choices to live a healthier and more fit lifestyle this time of year. We watch the gym population grow ten fold. So, with so many pushing towards something as rewarding as this why does it seem to fizzle out so quickly for most? I’m not going to lie to you, the first reason is because it’s HARD!! It’s hard pushing your body to the max in the gym, it’s hard to watch your caloric intake and on top of that it’s hard to maintain this lifestyle for the long haul!! Personally I think the strong should help raise the weak, or in this case the uninformed. Most gym rats wrinkle their nose at the influx of new people when we should actually be helping them succeed! That is another reason “newbies” fail, lack of a support system. At PRIME we are a family, we’re all pushing for the same thing…RESULTS! It could be to get stronger, or leaner, or to build up endurance! In the end it’s all the same thing, a more fit life! This New Year don’t just follow the crowd and walk in the gym door. That’s like going to a gun fight with an unloaded gun! Hillsdale Community Health Center is Growing to Serve the Community. By Nancy Hastings Simply Hers Magazine


hose who require continual nursing care and have significant deficiencies with activities of daily living are glad to have the MacRitchie North Wing addition at the Hillsdale Community Health Center.

Unit Administrator Trish Masarik said since the unit opened in April, the hospital has witnessed positive feedback from those utilizing the unit. The 19-bed unit has all private rooms. Nursing aides and skilled nurses are available 24 hours a day. “The skilled nursing unit cares for those who no longer require the intensive nursing care of the hospital, but are still not ready to return home, and when additional treatment, strengthening or healing time may still be necessary due to the nature of the illness or condition,” Masarik said. While on the unit, patients receive additional nursing care, physical rehabilitation and specialized support services to help them attain an optimum level of function and independence prior to returning home. According to Masarik, only 10 percent of the patients require long-term care.


“The primary goal is short-term rehabilitation between MacRitchie North and the McGuire unit,” Masarik said, noting there won’t be much difference between the two units. The McGuire unit opened in December of 1995 on the second floor of the hospital and recently underwent renovations. An open house celebrated the reopening of the unit on Dec. 12. Between the two units, there are now 39 beds available. Duke Anderson, CEO and president of Hillsdale Community Health Center, said he is excited to introduce the newly renovated McGuire skilled nursing facility and the newly constructed MacRitchie skilled nursing facility to the community. “These newly renovated and constructed rooms will provide for patients to receive their care in a private, modern room and highly skilled clinical environment,” Anderson said. “The impact of these new rooms to our community is far reaching as it allows patients to remain in their own community and able to receive local rehabilitation services preparing them to return to their homes. Families of our patients will be welcomed into the

new facility to discuss care plans and will no longer have the burden of traveling long distances to visit their loved ones at facilities across the state.”

Conditions treated vary from post-orthopedic and other surgery, medical conditions requiring skilled and rehab services, peg tube placement, acute wound care and more.

Masarik attributes the need for both units to the growing baby boomer population requiring skilled rehabilitation.

Now that the unit has been up and running for several months, the system is running smoothly with advantages for both staff and patients. Two nurses and two CENAs are on each shift with three shifts offering round-the-clock care. A staff of 18 includes coordinators, discharge planners and nurses.

“We had been sending a large number of Hillsdale residents out of the county since we didn’t have the beds to support the need,” Masarik said. “Now that will change.”

“We have everything needed right here,” she said. “If an x-ray is required, we can just send them downstairs.”

Masarik said she used to do dual roles, where now the jobs are divided up. As administrator of the unit, she is also an RN who has worked in the system 18 years, always on the skilled unit side. She grew up in Litchfield, attended nursing school in Battle Creek and received her nursing home administrator’s license more than a decade ago. She attended Spring Arbor University for a bachelor’s degree and received a master’s degree from Bellevue University in Nebraska.

The unit not only grants access to an array of hospital services, it gives patients the ability to maintain communication with primary care and specialty physicians.

“I started as a nurse and have worked my way up,” Masarik said, noting her goal of becoming an administrator has been long-range. “I truly enjoy the residents we take care of.”

“We have a hospitalist group of physicians, physician assistants or nurse practitioners in the building 24-7 to help take care of any needs,” Masarik said, explaining hospitalists work with physicians to coordinate and improve the efficiency of care.

Masarik said the entire staff is Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certified, which is not typical, since most nursing homes only require cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training.

The advantage of the unit being located in the hospital is the availability of equipment and medical personnel, so sending patients outside the facility for care is not necessary.

While on the unit, patients learn the skills necessary to care for themselves at home to optimize recovery. One-on-one meetings with families help set residents up with home care needs before they are discharged.

“We are very fortunate to have a really good team here,” Masarik said. “Everyone jumps in where they are needed.”

By Sara So, Simply Hers Magazine When Marlana emailed me to let me know that the next article for Simply Hers was coming due it literally boggled my mind how quickly the time had passed! So, Happy New Year to all the wonderful readers! A quick administrative note before we get into the meat of things, I finished out the semester, ending with good grades and while maybe not mentally ready for another semester I know I’ve got this! Even as a student, it is wonderful to have found something that is as gratifying as nursing. Some things in your life just make your feel, awake, and nursing is the first thing since the Army which has made me feel that way. The Army is going well, I continue to work full time on top of going to school full time, and on the weekends I am a Company Commander. It’s stressful, but at the end of the day when I lay my head down I’m pleased with my life, and I know that’s more than a lot of people can say. So onto the real topic of this article. I would hope from the articles I’ve written over the past two years (holy smokes it’s been that long!) that I have adequately portrayed the confident, independent, strong woman that I feel I am. Which is why what happened to me recently knocked me back so hard. After a long stressful semester, I, like many people decided to celebrate by going out the day before Thanksgiving. I made reservations at a favorite bar hangout for a large group of my friends from nursing School. I had the day off, relaxed, beautified myself, and left for the evening excited to celebrate a few days of freedom. The night started well, drinks were had all around, dancing, celebrating, it was exhilarating. The club quickly filled to capacity and they weren’t letting anyone else in. The place was so packed you could barely move. I had been drinking for a couple of hours, and while drunk, I was no more so than any of my friends. A friend who was late trying to get in texted me, so I went outside to see if I could get her in. That is when I was stopped by the table closest to the door. “The waiter brought us too many shots, stop and have one”! You can already guess where this story ends. I am a strong, smart women, heck I have a degree in Psychology and am a Military Police Officer in the Army, I know the stories and the risks. Yet in that moment, weakened by the influence of alcohol I disregarded everything I knew and stopped. And celebrated with them, and took a shot from a group of strangers. I was unable to get my friend in and the next minutes went uneventfully. I remember putting on my coat, I remember walking outdoors. And that’s where it ends, near blackness, curtains closed. I have a couple of flashes from the rest of the evening, all of them dream like, unreal, as if I were floating above my body looking down at it. If you haven’t already guessed it yet, dear readers, I was drugged. CPT SARA SO!!! Of all the people I would have thought this could happen to I was at the bottom of the list. My friends have gently helped me piece the rest of the evening together. From the emotional meltdown in the bathroom, to having to be carried out of he club. Both my friends and husband have told me they have never, ever, seen me like that. While I don’t really remember any of it, I can tell you I have never felt so violated in my life. Things I must have shared with my friends, while I’m sure I would have shared someday, I certainly wasn’t ready to yet. My power to make decisions, think, heck even walk on my own was taken away from me.


Was it a joke? A prank? I’ll never know. I took an at home drug test a couple days later and tested positive for narcotics, I take NO medications. The cops told me that without an identified assailant, and considering no robbery or assault took place, there wasn’t much that they could do. It took me a while to come to the decision to share this story with you. On top of feeling violated, I also felt incredibly humiliated. Both at the vulnerable part of myself that was exposed that night, and also by the fact that I broke one of the biggest rules of going out: never accept a drink from a stranger. As I looked into this problem further I was shocked to find just how common this really was. The drugs that can be used to incapacitate a person are varied, and many of them, are not illegal. Some can be purchased over the counter, many can be found in most adults drug cabinets. Who knows what could happen if I hadn’t been out with friends, or if my friends hadn’t been so vigilant in watching out for one another. I, like many young women have drank excessively before, and all my friends told me they had never seen me in that condition. Please, keep the following things in mind as you enjoy your life to the fullest in the coming year: • Don’t assume that it can’t or won’t happen you. It doesn’t matter your age, gender, drinking or drug habits or level of intoxication. Who knows why people choose the targets they do, and your life and well being are too precious to gamble. • Never go out alone. I will take that one step further and say make sure at least one person in your group knows you well enough to identify when your behavior is unusual. • Watch your friends. The most common theme I saw amongst people who reported it was a quick/unusual change in personality. Another indicator is a person appearing to become very drunk, very quickly and disproportionately to the amount of alcohol they have been drinking. • if you suspect a friend has been drugged take the to the ER, many of the drugs used in these cases, especially when mixed with alcohol, can quickly kill. • Know if this happens to you that it is not your fault. You are not weak, stupid, foolish, or any of the other terms that imply you should have known better. I for one will not start holding myself accountable for illegal and disgusting actions of the degenerates in this world, you won’t be held accountable either. I am sorry to start out my second year writing for this wonderful magazine on what seems to me to be such a negative fashion. I have been through the gamut of emotions with this. The embarrassment and humiliation, the shame, the fear, the anger. But that is why this magazine is so important. So that we can learn from one another, and through that grow. I was incredibly lucky. I was not assaulted or robbed, I will suffer no lasting physical damage from this incident. I was lucky. Not everybody is. If I can change even one persons path, save them from the pain if this intrusion, then I have done my job; as a leader, a woman, and a human being. My story is nearly identical to the stories of other I have found on this subject, do not let my story become your own. Welcome to 2014, have a safe and happy rest of the year. Talk to you soon.

May motivation come easily to you in 2014 Wow, another year has come and gone. It’s hard to believe. I feel like I just started writing for Simply Hers Magazine only yesterday. So much has happened in the past year and at the same time not a lot has happened. It was a whirlwind is the only thing I can tell you for certain. by Ashley Price Simply Hers Magazine

My thoughts, prayers, and deepest sympathy to Buddah, Linda and the rest of the Baird family.

The new year is always a time for people to sit down, examine their life and to try to make positive changes. It’s like a snake shedding its skin. We wiggle off the remains of one year and the brand new, vibrant skin of the next year emerges. The only difference between us and the snake is that I don’t think the snake thinks his skin is going to somehow be different than before. You cannot magically change your life by the turning of a calendar page. It’s very convenient for time tracking and goal benchmarking, but that is about it. If you want to make positive changes in your life then you need to live them daily, not yearly. But why is it so hard to get and more importantly to stay motivated? A perfect example is writing this column. The editors are waiting to send this issue to print and who do you think they’re waiting on? Me. I’ve had ample time and the means to write the column and I really, truly enjoy it. So why is it so hard for me to sit down and do what I love?


Zig Ziglar was quoted as saying that “People often say that motivation doesn’t last. Well, neither does bathing - that’s why we recommend it daily”. That is my only true resolution for 2014. To be better at daily motivation and to not get lost in the minutia. To stick to doing the things I love and that give me energy and let go of the things that drain my energy or distract me away from the life I want. I realize that is much easier said than done. And I’m sure there is something in your life that you would like to try and kick or change in some way. Whether it be to quit, start, or change some habit in your life, or to work harder on cultivating and maintaining your relationships, accomplish something that you’ve been wanting to do for sometime, no matter what your resolution is, it all starts with daily motivation. So in 2014 be kind to yourself. Take some time out of your busy schedule to work on yourself each and every single day. It may seem selfish but at the end of the day, that’s all that matters. A better you will lead to a better life for you and the people all around you. It’s like the oxygen mask theory when you fly on a plane; you are no good to anyone else on the plane in a crisis unless you put your own oxygen mask on first. You have to take care of yourself first in order to take care of others. Put on that mask and keep yourself strong to take care of you and yours. Best wishes on a blessed new year!


S.O.S. Sort, Organize, and Simplify Your Life!

As we start a New Year, perhaps one of your resolutions is to S.O.S. – Sort, Organize and Simplify- your life. When I asked you what area of organization was your biggest challenge, the overwhelming response was, PAPER! I have to admit, my response to that was, UGH! You see, piles of paper, the dilemma of what to keep or pitch, and the procrastination to even deal with it, is my nemesis too! But I guess there is no better time than the start of a New Year, to tackle it and hopefully get it under control, once and for all. For a society that has advanced by leaps and bounds into technology and is even sometimes referred to as “paperless”, we still do have a lot of paper invading our desks, kitchen tables, countertops, purses and even our cars! There are so many types of paper and ways to deal with it, but let’s commit by taking a few quick and easy steps. As with any organizing project, half the battle is just getting started ~ AUTOMATE! Set up online payments and electronic statements. If you ever need a paper copy, the company or financial institution can provide them, or you can simply print them off. ACCESS THE TRASH! Open all incoming mail standing over the wastebasket. You can quickly get rid of all junk mail, envelopes and extra stuffers. Don’t even let them touch your desk or kitchen counter.


DIVIDE AND CONQUER! Have file folders ready so you can divide all other incoming mail into categories and file accordingly as you open the envelopes. If you prefer to use piles, rather than files, buy large clips, label them by category and sort accordingly. Some category examples would be- Bills to Pay, Calls to Make, Pending (waiting for a call back or other action) and File in Long Term Record Keeping (important documents such as wills, insurance

policies). Schedule a specific day of the week (or bi-weekly) to go through each file/pile and take appropriate action. EVALUATE YOUR SUBSCRIPTIONS! Be honest- are you subscribing to magazines that you never get around to reading? Discontinue all but your favorite ones that you are sure you will read. When you are finished with them, donate them to a senior center, shelter or doctor’s office. Consider sharing subscriptions with a friend; it will save you money, you will have a set time to get finished with it and the paper clutter will be out of your house. CREATE A MAIL STATION! Keep different sizes of envelopes, stamps, pens, stationery, cards and return address labels in a desk organizer. RE-PURPOSE! Think of creative ways to store and organize miscellaneous paper; such as using a rolodex to keep records of website logons and passwords. A recipe file works great to keep business cards by name or category. LET IT GO! There is no logical reason to keep paid bill receipts more than one month (or billing cycle). When you receive the next bill, as long as it shows the previous payment has been received, keep the current one and shred the old one. Your files will stay cleaned out and organized with a commitment to only keep the last statement. I know these few tips are not going to make all the paper go away but I hope these baby steps will inspire you to start tackling the chaos. The Hearing Bone’s Connected to the What?

Once upon a time, before people knew any better, they thought that hearing loss was simply a part of growing older - something not worth doing much about. They were wrong. Turns out, hearing loss isn’t fussy about age. More than half of us with hearing loss are still in the workforce. And hearing loss is a much bigger deal than we ever imagined. We need to take it seriously. As one of the most common chronic health conditions in the United States today, hearing loss affects baby boomers, Gen Xers and every other age group. And, when left unaddressed, hearing loss affects just about every aspect of a person’s life. The big surprise is that hearing loss has been linked to other health conditions. Hearing loss can have unwelcome companions - like heart disease; diabetes; chronic kidney disease; depression; cognitive decline, dementia or Alzheimer’s disease; increased risk of falling; increased hospitalizations. In fact, as studies on the link between hearing loss and other health conditions mount, we’ve begun to see how our ears - and specifically how our hearing - connect to our whole body and health. Here’s what we know: The very best thing to do for hearing loss is to find out if you have it as soon as possible. Then take it seriously. If deemed appropriate by a qualified hearing health care professional, treat it. Hearing aids can benefit the vast majority of people with hearing loss. Cardiovascular and hearing health are connected. Studies show that a healthy cardiovascular system positively affects hearing. Conversely, inadequate blood flow and trauma to the blood vessels of the inner ear can contribute to hearing loss. Some experts even believe that because the inner ear is so sensitive to blood flow, it is possible that abnormalities in the cardiovascular system could be noted here earlier than in other less sensitive parts of the body making the ear a kind of “window to the heart.”


People with diabetes are about twice as likely to have hearing loss as those without it. Recent studies show a link between hearing loss and dementia, leading many experts to stress the importance of addressing hearing loss. One study found that seniors with hearing loss are significantly more likely to develop dementia over time than those who retain their hearing. Another found that hearing loss is associated with accelerated cognitive decline in older adults, and that those with hearing loss are more likely to develop problems thinking and remembering than older adults whose hearing is normal. People who don’t address hearing loss are more prone to depression. Fortunately, studies show that people with hearing loss who use hearing aids often have fewer depressive symptoms, greater social engagement, and improved quality of life. Hearing loss is tied to a three-fold risk of falling. One study found that even people with mild hearing loss were nearly three times more likely to have a history of falling. A study of older adults showed that those with moderate chronic kidney disease had a higher prevalence of hearing loss than those of the same age without the disease. Hospitalization is more likely for older adults with hearing loss than for their peers with normal hearing, according to a study by experts at Johns Hopkins. Men and women who used hearing aids - even though they were older and had more severe hearing loss - had a significantly lower mortality risk than those with hearing loss who did not use hearing aids. Most doctors don’t include hearing health as a routine part of annual exams. So ask to have your hearing tested. Once you reach middle-age, it makes sense to include hearing tests as part of your routine annual care. It seems that the “hearing bone” may be connected to more than we originally thought. So the next time you think you might be having trouble hearing something, listen to your ears. They may be telling you something.

Biking FAT Finally, biking is a four season sport.


n this bicycle-obsessed state of Michigan, where the winters are long and the bike trails are even longer, the Fat Bike is “the Swiss Army knife of bicycles”.

Fat Bikes or snow bikes – speciallyadapted mountain bikes with large tires capable of cycling on snow and sand -- have turned cycling into a four-season sport in this snowy region. Over the past two years, the fat-wheeled bicycles and their riders have become a normal part of the local winter landscape. Named for their oversized tires, which come in widths of 3.7 or 4.5 inches, Fat Bikes were developed in Alaska only a few years ago and have spread rapidly to the rest of the nation. Industry analysts expect Fat Bike ownership to double in the next year. Warm-weather cyclists find 48

them useful for riding on sandy beaches and desert trails, but their clearest advantage is on snow.

The interest has been particularly intense in Traverse City, a popular resort community on the northeastern shore of Lake Michigan and a favorite year-round destination for outdoor sports enthusiasts of all kinds. Given the opportunity to add cycling to their repertoire of winter sports, they’ve wasted no time embracing the Fat Bike phenomenon. Fat Biking is the answer for a lot of people that don’t currently have a winter sport or are looking to try a new one. There’s no learning curve. You just get a bike and ride and have fun. Fat Bikers tend to be a sociable group, too. They have already made some major

ripples in Michigan’s cycle racing community. Last year they created the Northern Michigan Fat Bike Series – three winter races held in difference parts of the region – and in 2013 Fat Bikes had their own category in Traverse City’s prestigious Iceman Cometh Challenge (the largest point-to-point race in the US).

In 2014 the venerable North American Vasa Festival of Races, usually reserved for cross-country skiers, is hosting a Fat Bike race, the Feb. 8 King Vasa, on the popular Vasa Pathway in the Pere Marquette State Forest. Anyone who can ride a bike can ride a Fat Bike. Fat Bikers choose to ride every chance they get and it’s never a ‘weather pending’ type of ride. They ride in all types of weather and have an absolute blast doing it.

Bathroom decor: Big bang ideas for less than $100

(BPT) - When it comes to bathroom decor, tastes and preferences are as common and varied as wrinkles on elbows. A look that delights one homeowner may disgust another, but one trend suits everyone’s taste: saving money. You may want your bathroom redo to look like you spent a million bucks on it, but you can get a whole new look for a lot less than that. In fact, some downright cheap upgrades can be quite dazzling. Here are a handful of high-impact ways to achieve a whole new look for less than $100: • Paint is always a cost-effective upgrade, and you can buy a good gallon for $30 or less. The simple act of changing wall color can impart a designer look, and if you’re careful with those edges, no one will ever know you did it yourself. * Sometimes bathroom tile starts to look faded, outdated and tired without being chipped or cracked - two problems that would require you to replace damaged tile. If your tile is in good shape, but just not perky enough for you, repainting it is a cheap, easy way to create a whole new look without the work and expense of retiling. It’s easy to find a variety of tile paint colors at your local home improvement store, and prices average around $30 a gallon. While you’re at it, do a little something with the grout - either regrouting entirely or using a stain to dye the grout to complement the tile. * Treat yourself to a new showerhead. You may not realize the unhappy impact of an old, inefficient or dated showerhead until you’re standing under a new one enjoying the fall of water. You can certainly spend a lot to get a new showerhead with all the bells and whistles, but you can also find plenty of attractive, efficient and stimulating options for much less than $100. Installation is well within the abilities of your average DIYer. * Sadly, bathroom lighting often goes to one extreme or the other: either it’s a bright, overhead fixture that casts enough glare to land a plane by, or it’s a dinky band of bulbs above the bathroom mirror that doesn’t provide adequate illumination to brush your teeth, let alone apply makeup. Most people move into a house and live with the current bathroom lighting, but switching it is easy, cheap and a great way to improve the room’s safety, usability and looks all at the same time. Not sure what you need? The American Lighting Association offers a great guide to choosing bathroom lighting at www.AmericanLightingAssociation.com. Taking your bathroom from boring to “bam!” doesn’t have to cost big bucks. Just look for low-cost improvements that deliver big impact, and you can achieve a million-dollar look on a shoestring budget.


Beyond white: hot color trends for the kitchen and bath

(BPT) - So many of us love the rich colors featured in kitchen and bath magazines, but when it comes to selecting colors for our own homes, we tend to play it safe. It’s time to be bold and get out of the color comfort zone. Whether it’s a vibrant backsplash, playful shade on the wall, or a new sink color that pops with personality, today’s hot color trends are anything but boring.


Consider these top

five color trends for kitchen and bath spaces: 1. Gray reigns king The 2013 NKBA Trends Report names gray the coveted color of the year. According to the report, use of gray color schemes in both kitchens and baths has dramatically increased since 2010, particularly over the past year. The hue is currently used in 55 percent of kitchens and 56 percent of bathrooms. “I regularly work gray into my projects because it instantly elevates the design and adds depth to the palette,” says senior interior designer Travis Rotelli, who works at the Kohler Design Center in Kohler, Wis. “I love incorporating it with Kohler enameled cast iron sink - there are five different shades of gray to choose from, which makes it easy to find one to complement the other colors in the space and then echo that shade through the backsplash tile or paint color.” 2. Bold and beautiful hues Neutrals are classic, but pops of strategically placed color add life to kitchen and baths. “Emerald and varying shades of green are hot pops of colors for 2013, and the color for 2014 will be all about cobalt,” states Rotelli. While he says “it” hues are fun, he encourages homeowners to identify colors they personally enjoy. “We all have one color we’re always drawn to; the one that repeats in our wardrobes and home decor. That is the color to use as an accent in the kitchen or bath. Color trends come and go, but one that resonates with your design aesthetic and reflects you as an individual you’ll always love,” Rotelli says. 3. Evolve from white Neutral no longer simply means white. Homeowners are eagerly embracing other colors in place of white, like Dune from Kohler, available for sinks, baths, shower bases and toilets. “Dune is a subtle balance of beige and gray that brings a cool tone to the space - a true neutral that works well in place of white and adds a nuance of sophistication to the room’s color palette,” says Rotelli.


Fresh Herbs Bring Back the Taste of Summer

Looking for a respite from the long Michigan winter? You can grow herbs indoors this winter and add that just-picked taste to your meals, even when snow is drifting up against the kitchen window. You don’t even need special lights—herbs fare just fine in a bright window. Here are the best herbs for growing on windowsills and the smart techniques you need to keep them happy and healthy until you can plant outside again

Basil Start basil from seeds and place the pots in a south-facing window—it likes lots of sun and warmth. Bay A perennial that grows well in containers all year long. Place the pot in an east- or west-facing window, but be sure it does not get crowded—bay needs air circulation to remain healthy. Chives Dig up a clump of chives from your garden at the end of the growing season and pot it up. Leave the pot outside until the leaves die back. In early winter, move the pot to your coolest indoor spot (such as a basement) for a few days, then finally to your brightest window. Oregano Your best bet is to start with a tip cutting from an outdoor oregano plant. Place the pot in a south-facing window. 60

Parsley You can start this herb from seeds or dig up a clump from your garden at the end of the season. Parsley likes full sun, but will grow slowly in an east- or west-facing window. Rosemary Start with a cutting of rosemary, and keep it in moist soilless mix until it roots. It grows best in a south-facing window. Sage Take a tip cutting from an outdoor plant to start an indoor sage. It tolerates dry, indoor air well, but it needs the strong sun it will get in a south-facing window.

Thyme You can start thyme indoors either by rooting a soft tip cutting or by digging up and potting an outdoor plant. Thyme likes full sun but will grow in an east- or west-facing window.

Here is what she had to say: This winter my default has been just about anything warm and cozy. Letting them eat breakfast by the fireplace, adding an extra blanket to their beds, a hot cup of cocoa after being outside, a warm towel to wrap up in after tubs, or….

Step- by-step Instructions Step 1: 1. Using fabric scissors, cut two 2” inch squares from your choice of fabric. you’ll need two per hand warmer.

Step 2: 2. Place two squares of fabric wrong sides together and stitch a 1/4 inch seam around the outside, leaving a 1-1/2 inch opening and backstitching in the beginning and end. (if you don’t have pinking shears, place fabric right sided together, sew as instructed and then turn right side out.)

Step 3: 3. fill 3/4 of the way up with rice.

Step 4: 4. using a long pin, block the rice from falling out of the opening and sew closed.

PROJECT: Handmade Hand Warmers SKILL LEVEL: Beginner

Step 5: 5. using pinking shears, trim the edges…. it will keep them from fraying.

TIME: 20-30 minutes

WHAT YOU’LL NEED 2” square of any fabric fabric scissors pinking shears (optional) sewing machine or needle long pins, rice, and thread.


To use, warm up in the microwave for 20 seconds (or so), but make sure they aren’t too hot before handing over to little hands!
