Winner, Winner Venison Dinner

T

his is one of my favorite columns to write each and every year.

We have the results of our 16th Annual Webb Weekly Uncle Ron’s Monster Buck Contest.

I am very proud of our Monster Buck Contest and the job all involved do in making this happen. Which is not me. I stay out of it and only encourage hunters to enter.

I look forward to talking to folks about their harvest and hunting stories.

A tip of my Webb Weekly hunting hat with the American Flag on the side to Webb Weekly’s Ron Mingle and Dana Poust at Poust Taxidermy. These two folks do the heavy lifting to make the contest happen. Ron, from the organizing and overseeing side of things to the finish.

Dana for being the official scorer and caretaker once the bucks are checked in to the final scoring round.

I also want to give a shout-out to Sam the taxidermy lady and right-hand partner with Dana. She helps and — most importantly — keeps the taxidermy work going as Dana gets tied up with the contest. I always enjoy visiting with her when I stop up to the shop; this year, she was working on the beginning stages of two beavers. She shared this process with me, along with a lot of knowledge about beavers I had no idea about. They are

very interesting creatures. They are much different when you see them up close rather than on TV. When I drop by, it always amazes me the knowledge Dana and now Sam have about wildlife. They are like forensic scientists of wildlife creatures and habitats. They always do great work when it comes to their wildlife artistry, but through this process, they can also tell you about the age, diet, and habitat the animal lived in — as well as past injuries and overall health of their subject.

A tip of that bright orange hunting hat with the American Flag on the side to Jon and Don at Sauers Trading. Along with Poust Taxidermy, they are an official checkpoint for the initial scoring of the trophy bucks. And remember that we believe the trophy is in the hands of the holder. So, any legally harvested, locally taken buck qualifies.

The father/son duo at Sauers Trading also take care of all the legalities and provides a Savage Axis Rifle package with all the trimmings to the winner of the random rifle drawing. Sauers is another place just down the street from my office where I enjoy talking about hunting, firearms, and community.

Before I get to the results of this year’s Monster Buck Contest, here’s another tip of my hunting hat to the great folks at

making a $10 donation on their behalf.

The $10 per hunter contribution seems fitting based on this year’s winners, as 2 of the top 4 were 10 points.

This year’s winner, pictured below, is Stephen Speicher. What an absolutely amazing monster. Every tine of the ten is long, and the brow tines are some of the longest I’ve seen on a local buck.

This year’s runner-up was Henry Fisher with an absolute tank of a white tail featuring 11 points and a rack you could kick a field goal through.

Third place was Ralph Daley. His buck featured a 22” spread; I can tell by the smile on his face he was happy with the harvest.

And rounding out the top 4, Robert Glossner. That is the other remarkable ten-point with long, heavy tines and excellent mass.

This year’s contest was one of our closest ever, with only 3 SCI inches separating the winners. We also had a record number of bucks, scoring over 150, with seven.

Darin Bubb not only harvested a beautiful 12-point buck but is the winner of the random rifle drawing courtesy of Sauers Trading. Wow, what a hunting season he had. A double winner in my book.

I look forward to sharing our 17th Annual Contest with you later this year.

have been on a mission this New Year to curb my habit of eating out. It got a little out of control in the lead-up to the holidays, so it was way past time to reel that back in. We are now sticking to only eating out once per week. So far, it’s been going really well, but that does lead me to figure out what I will be cooking six days a week.

Luckily, I enjoy cooking, so it’s not much of a hardship, but figuring out a menu each week can certainly be a daunting task.

Personally, I find it easier to sit down on Saturday or Sunday and plan out the entire week of meals. If I take it day-by-day, I spend more money and sometimes find myself wanting to give in to the take-out instead of figuring out that night’s dinner. If it’s all laid out for me, I have no excuse and am better at sticking to my plan.

Also, by pre-planning the week, I can base what we eat on what’s on sale at the grocery store that week, saving me even more money.

I’m also able to get up and go through my freezer/fridge/cupboards so I know exactly what I do and don’t have, and I’m not spending extra money because I’m not totally sure if I have sour cream in the fridge or not.

So, what have we been eating? What have I found that’s new? Or that we’ve really enjoyed?

Well, let me share!

Ingredients: Cheeseburger Mac and – 3 oz. package of real bacon bits Cheese Steph – 1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese Ingredients: – 1 can (10 oz.) cream of chicken soup Nordstrom – 1 box Velveeta Shells & – 1 cup sour cream Cheese – 1 cup milk – 1.5 lbs. ground beef – 1 teaspoon salt – (2) 10 oz. cans tomato soup – 1/4 teaspoon pepper – 1.5 cups shredded cheddar – 2 cups diced rotisserie chicken or cooked – 1/5 cups shredded mozzarella chicken breast – salt, pepper, Italian seasoning, garlic powder, – 4 cups cooked wide egg noodle pasta onion powder (cooked al dente in lightly salted water) Directions: – 2 cups frozen broccoli florets, prepared Preheat oven to 375°, and grease a 9x13 according to package directions baking dish.

– 3/4 cup panko bread crumbs Cook shells according to package directions – 2 tablespoons melted butter and set aside. Reserve 1/2 cup of pasta water.

Directions: While shells are cooking, cook ground beef Preheat the oven to 350°F and gather the rest until no longer pink. Local Artist Wins Negro League Themed Art Contest

eth DeJesus England has always had a passion for art. It has been something she has loved for as long as she can remember.

Her talent for art recently yielded her national recognition when she won the Jerry Malloy Negro League Baseball Research Conference’s Art Contest with her painting of the outfield of the 19241927 Harrisburg Giants Negro League team. This year’s Jerry Malloy Negro League Conference will be held June 6-9 at the MLB Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY, where Beth’s winning original oil painting will be on display.

“This year’s professional winner, Beth DeJesus, produced a piece called ‘The Greatest Outfield of All-Time.’ The piece stood out for its focus on actual players who are portrayed with great strength and humanity. The viewer feels like they were there when these three friends posed together before a game.

They are the focal point, but the field and houses behind them show a sense of community,” Dr. Leslie Heaphy told Webb Weekly.

“After researching old photos of the players, it was pointed out to me by Lou Hunsinger that the Harrisburg

team played the first professional game at Bowman Field in 1926. I think the inclusion of the Bowman Field background added a great deal to the piece by including a historic local component to it,” Beth said.

According to Heaphy, who headed the committee that conducted the Malloy Art Contest, the contest began in 2010, with three categories each year — professional, amateur, and youth (16 and under). It is the only art competition focused solely on black baseball. Art is judged by various artists who volunteer

Karnes is quoted as saying, “My work is about my connection to my surroundings. The subjects of my pictures are things that are familiar and immediate to me.”

Beth can certainly relate in the same way to her paintings. She graduated from MICA with a bachelor’s degree in Drawing. Her work is about capturing a moment in time and preserving history.

Beth works full-time as a graphic designer for Gregory Welteroth Advertising.

According to her, on the weekends, when the weather is nice, there’s nothing more exciting for her than packing up her car with oil paints, watercolors, and pochade box in tow, exploring the back roads and quaint townscapes of Lycoming County,

Pennsylvania, and beyond.

It’s common to find Beth out and about at baseball games, concerts, and community events, documenting life with paint. In addition to her art, Beth plays fiddle locally in the string band, SHOOfly.

When Beth visited Portugal in the summers of 2022 and 2023, she traveled with her miniature watercolors and documented her trip and her family’s heritage with plein air watercolors.

Beth is the Marketing Director of the Bald Eagle Art League (BEAL) and serves on the Way’s Garden Art Show committee for BEAL. The origin of “The Greatest Outfield” painting goes back almost two years.

In April 2022, the local chapter of the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) had a meeting devoted to the topic of “The Art of Baseball.” Beth was invited to speak regarding baseball and art since she had done some plein air paintings while attending baseball games at Oriole Park at Camden Yards and Bowman Field with me.

Fast forward to February 2023, Beth had a show of paintings opening at the Genetti. I had invited Ted Knorr, a fellow Negro League historian who lives in Harrisburg, to speak the next day at our local SABR meeting on the topic of the Negro Leagues. I took Ted to Beth’s

their time to be involved. The art is highlighted on social media, the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) website, and in various issues of Black Ball, a journal published by McFarland Publishing Company.

Heaphy added that it is exciting each year to see the entries — they are creative, thought-provoking, and educational. The youth entries are particularly exciting because they show what the young people are learning about black baseball.

Beth’s love of art and making things dates to her early childhood, but she became interested in plein air painting when she attended the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), studying under wellknown artist Mark Karnes.

For the past 40 years Ron has produced numerous paintings of wildlife and nature.

His paintings are known for their thoughtful composition, richly detailed landscapes, and accurately portrayed wildlife.

“These three are among the best of ten traditional Major League outfields intact for at least four years, including at least one Hall of Famer during the segregated era (1901-1946). There are also three Negro League outfields that also meet those criteria; one of those — Harrisburg Giants, 1924-1927 — is the subject of Beth DeJesus’s wonderful portrait,” stated Ted Knorr.

That outfield consisted of Clarence “Fats” Jenkins,” who interestingly enough is in the Basketball Hall of Fame as a member of the pioneering New York Renaissance or “Rens” team, centerfielder Oscar Charleston, who was inducted in the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1976 and Herbert “Rap” Dixon, who many baseball historians, including Knorr, believe warrants a place in Cooperstown.

opening, and he was impressed with her work and wondered if he might be able to commission her to do a painting of the 1924-1927 Harrisburg Giants, consisting of “Fats” Jenkins, Oscar Charleston, and Rap Dixon. There are no photographs of the three standing together on a baseball field.

Ted asked Beth if he provided individual photos of each player and whether she could combine them into a painting of three players. Since the Harrisburg Giant played in the first professional game at Bowman Field in 1926, I suggested that she use it as a background of them standing at Bowman Field with the neighborhood in the background.

Ted and I provided Beth with the needed photographs, and by May, she had rendered a beautiful, finished painting.

Later, Ted suggested that Beth enter the painting in the Malloy Conference Art Contest.

would be without meaning.” The fact that we care enough to ask, wonder, search, and yearn reveals something important and instinctive about us humans.

Is it possible that somewhere deep within every human being is a soul that longs for a realm and a God it cannot touch or see? The history of human spirituality doesn’t prove the existence of God, but the fact that it exists so universally is certainly a compelling argument. With this in mind, Blaise Pascal observed that “There is a Godshaped vacuum in the heart of each man which cannot be satisfied by any created

thing but only by God the Creator.” He had more to say, but I’m going to save that for another article.

In some ways, Lennon was right.

History is polluted with examples of tyrants, despots, and charlatans using religion as a way of gaining power by controlling the masses. When spirituality is hijacked by evil men, be they priests, pastors, presidents, kings, or terrorists, the consequences are horrendous. This is likely what caused the 16th-century French philosopher Voltaire to make this observation regarding the bigotry and

cruelty he witnessed in religion, “Those who can make you believe absurdities can make you commit atrocities.”

If God does not exist, and if there is no spiritual realm and no universal and guiding morality, and if human existence has no purpose beyond survival, then the only thing that truly matters is the healthy perpetuation of the human species. Charles Darwin called it the survival of the fittest.

Darwin’s cousin, a British scientist named Francis Galeton, coined the term eugenics as a method for advancing the human race through Darwin’s survivalfittest theory. The term eugenics is based on a Greek term meaning well-born.

Galeton hoped to actively discourage the overbreeding of the “less fit” to preserve and advance what was best in the human race. The only way to discourage overbreeding of the unfit was forced sterilization — or extermination.

The concept of eugenics advanced significantly in the early 1900s. In 1907, the state of Indiana was the first in the U.S. to pass laws that allowed for the compulsory sterilization of people the state determined to be “unfit for reproduction.” More than 29 states followed suit. When morality is based on survival of the fittest, eugenics makes sense.

In Mein Kampf, Adolf Hitler wrote, “Positive steps should be taken to encourage the flourishing of the fitter.”

The Third Reich’s mass extermination of people it determined to be not fit for reproduction included Jews, Slavic peoples, same-gender attracted peoples, and the physically and mentally weak and disabled.

Is it fair to say that the concept of survival of the fittest naturally leads to eugenics?

Wouldn’t it be wise for humans to limit the ability of the “less fit” to reproduce?

Wouldn’t doing so bring about a master race of healthy and highly intelligent humans? Hitler certainly came to that conclusion — and fully acted on it. Is that what a world without God is like?

I think H.G. Wells was wrong. It seems that in a world where God doesn’t exist, there is one thing that matters — your own survival — and everyone else be damned. Not exactly the outcome Lennon’s dreamers had in mind.

Thankfully, the eugenics movement disappeared from public view quickly after World War II due to its association with the Nazis and the Holocaust.

However, it’s still out there, and if God doesn’t secure your inalienable rights, then someone may someday declare you unfit.

Would the world be better off without the guiding presence, purpose, and morality of God? I’ll let you be the judge — and we’ll pick up the conversation again next week with the second half of Well’s quote, “If God exists, nothing else matters.”

County Hall Corner: Rethinking the Future

taught an elective course on Future Studies at a business college in Europe. The students were quite interested in knowing what skills and possibilities in employment would be out there when they entered the working world. It is obviously a shaky science as we have no way of knowing the future and, at best, can postulate best-case, worst-case, and no-change outcomes.

To actually change the future requires risky initiatives.

Take Dan Campbell, the head coach for the Detroit Lions. If ever there was a hopeless NFL team, it was the Lions.

Since that first Super Bowl game in 1967, the Lions have won a grand total of one playoff game. That is almost six decades of mediocracy. Despite having awesome players like Barry Sanders and Calvin Johnson during those years, they still fell short. Matthew Stafford was their quarterback for nine years and then got traded to the San Francisco 49ers — and with him as quarterback, they won a Super Bowl!

Dan Campbell came along and declared that the Lions were not losers. He showed it by playing aggressive football, literally acting like a champion who should be feared. His first year, 2021, was not

impressive: 3-13-1. The next year, they were 9-8. This year, they were 12-5 and won two playoff games to get to the conference title game.

Whatever the final outcome of the Detroit Lions this year, they have changed the status quo that history assigned to them. What caused that change was leadership that knew that change was possible but needed aggressive action to make it happen.

Lycoming County has been in a downward spiral for some time now due to a lack of jobs and a population that continues to get older. As a result, the Planning Department has conducted research that would indicate the coming decade will see a small but steady decline in population. Given this concern, the Lycoming County Commissioners made a bold move to use the federal ARPA funds to invest in areas that would have a generational impact. In short, how can we change the future?

We can start by reconsidering the scenario. The Planning Department studies were done before the current migration started to happen in places like California. For the first time since the Gold Rush of 1849, California has lost more residents than it gained. The same is happening in other states, such as New York and Illinois. People who have lived

in cities like Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, New York City, etc., are tired of the crime, the filth, the congestion, the prices — the everything. The tradeoff is not worth it, and they are looking for new locales.

I believe that we might be in the works right now for the Lycoming County area to grow. In reflecting on the current political environment in the United States today, I am wondering if we might be seeing a future migration toward us from those who are fed up with urban/ suburban troubles.

In just the past few months, I have met two individuals and one couple that had been living in a major metropolitan area and have chosen to now live in Lycoming County. Yes, we are small by population, but actually, at 114,022, Lycoming County ranks 29th out of 67 counties in the state.

Over half of the counties have less than 100,000 residents. So, by comparison, we are not so small after all.

The former Lycoming County Commissioners Board worked very hard to provide the infrastructure for future growth. Addressing the need for improvement in community services as well as work on the levee, the Route 15 corridor, and yes, even the property reassessment that is in the hopper will all provide an improved and important infrastructure base.

And we have a lot to offer. We are in the Pennsylvania Wilds and have some awesome scenic sights. We have two

strong academic institutions in education — Penn College and Lycoming College.

Both these schools have active sports departments and worthwhile arts events. Beyond these schools, we also have the Uptown Music Collective, the Community Arts Center, the Community Theater League, and others. For those who enjoy excellent theater, music, live entertainment, sports, nature, and such, it can be found here. And let’s not forget the two weeks in August when people from all over the world come here for the Little League World Series. I believe that there are many cities in our country that wish they had the potential that this area has going for us.

Yes, there is the possibility of a Field of Dreams wish that if we “build it and they will come,” — and they don’t come. But I believe that Franklin D. Roosevelt said it best when he stated about the future, “We are either living out the birth of a new vision or the death of an old one.”

my regular routine, and my workouts were becoming a bit sporadic. I do best with short, frequent workouts that are roughly the same time every day. This change wasn’t hard, and I was able to get back into my routine quickly.

Meditation: I know, I know, what is an ex-powerlifter doing talking about meditation again? Next thing you know, I’ll be out talking to trees and going to work in tie-dye. Just kidding. Hopefully, with age comes wisdom. As I have gotten older, I have made an effort to be more open-minded. I have found that

daily meditation and breathing exercises have done wonders for managing stress, clearing my mind, and lowering my resting heart rate. Getting back into a regular exercise routine has also made it easier to practice breathing exercises and mindfulness, as my preference is to do them after a workout.

Diet: Ah, food; my kryptonite. When I was a kid, I could eat anything and not really gain weight. Then I hit middle age, and it seems that I gained weight just thinking about food. Add to that holiday festivities, wonderful time spent

with my family surrounded by sweets and junk food, less exercise, and less sleep, and you have a recipe for disaster.

The other joke that life plays on us as we age is that weight is soooo much easier to put on than it is to take it off.

Eating less sounds simple, but putting it into practice is not so simple. We Americans, eat way too much as a society. Some experts call this being over-fed and under-nourished. Other cultures around the world do not eat constantly and, thus, have much lower obesity rates. 3+ big meals a day and snacking all day is not good for us. I won’t go into the statistics of Type 2 diabetes and heart disease in this article.

Suffice it to say that we won’t starve if we cut back. Personally, I needed to become reacquainted with the feeling of hunger.

Feeling hungry is a good thing. It lets us know when to eat and how much we need to eat. The operative word is need.

However, what and how much we eat needs to be sustainable for long-term results. I chose to cut back to two meals per day with no snacking in between. I wanted to find out when I actually got hungry and not be bound by the time of day or a preconceived routine. The first few days were hard, but then I started feeling quite good. My energy levels were up, and I was more productive at work. Again, this is just what I did and is not for everyone. I typically get up early

and have a couple of coffees between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. (I like coffee, but this isn’t part of any diet plan.) I would then eat something small around 11 a.m. or 12 p.m. Maybe a bowl of hearty homemade soup or stew with lots of vegetables. I do not snack in the afternoons because I do not feel the need. Dinner is something sensible, such as a protein like chicken or beef with a non-starchy vegetable side like broccoli. I try to drink a fair amount of water throughout the day. Once per week, I might have a “cheat meal.” I don’t actually like using this word because it implies I am doing something wrong, which I am not. I simply reserve a day or a meal to have whatever I want, guilt-free, and it helps to keep me from obsessing about certain foods. It is important to note that this needs to be a very narrow window of splurging lest we fall off the wagon.

Remember, this reset is just what I did to get back into a lifestyle of wellness that suits me. Your reset could look entirely different. If you feel that things have gotten out of control, talk to your doctor about options. Be smart and think longterm. The cabbage soup diet may work to lose weight initially, but things like it are certainly not permanent solutions, which means the weight will come right back on, plus a few extra pounds. Start small and make sustainable changes for lasting results.

filled with lots of fresh meat. Ba-haha!

I was 14 and completely boy-crazy.

I started in band and had a serious crush on a drummer in this class.

Biker, skater, and now a drummer — do you see a pattern here?? Oh my gosh, I had the biggest crush on this kid.

In the meantime, I was in this math class where another boy would not stop harassing me. He really liked me, and I wanted nothing to do with him.

Eww — as if, buddy. It got so bad that the teacher ended up moving me to another math class.

At this point, it was my third time switching math classes because when I first started high school, they put me in a class that was way above my brain comprehension. Like future presidents of the United States were in this class. The boys were nerds/pretty boys, and the girls were completely stuck up. I wanted out.

Now, the second class didn’t work out either, but then I walked into Mrs. Bucks’ class and knew “this was the class.”

Ohh the boys in this class. Phew!

So many cute ones! I dated one for

the skater punk type. I seemed to be attracted to the bad boys. He would steal my huge Pooh bear I took with me to camp and definitely flirted with me the whole week. I liked him so much! After camp was over, we started dating.

My cousin was dating his older brother, and she had her driver’s license. (I still have notes from my cousin and I at camp talking to each other about these two brothers.) So, for the next few months, I was able to go see him. My parents let me because my cousin, who was older than me, was with me. One thing I’ll never forget is when he went on a cruise and came back with all this stuff for me. It was so sweet!

I started high school in September, but I continued my relationship with this boy.

Another thing I won’t forget is that my dad DID NOT approve of this boy.

Not one bit. He had good reasons, and the reason was very accurate and still up to date. I think I just started to see what my dad was saying and broke up with him. Plus, his going to another school wasn’t easy either.

But there were others in that class who liked me, but I didn’t like them back.

Then there was this other guy who sat at the opposite end of the room than me. Very different from the rest. He was cute but super quiet. This was the guy who, during my very first day in Mrs. Buck’s class, told me my bag was leaking. (That was so embarrassing.)

This guy shared his cheese Ritz crackers with me once Mrs. Buck changed seats around after Christmas break. She sat me right next to this guy named Chris McElroy. We became friends, and I constantly talked to him about this boy I was crazy about in the band. He always told me to just talk to him, but I never had the guts to do it, which is pretty crazy for me. (Me, shy!? ) I just kept yapping in math class to Chris about this boy until something changed one day. *lifting eyebrows up and down with a very big smile* TO BE CONTINUED……

Does Tea Have Medicinal Properties?

T

he common cold can strike at any time of year, but most people likely associate colds with winter. Colds tend to spread more easily in winter, when people typically spend more time indoors with windows closed, thus making it easier for colds and other viruses to spread.

Many people have their own remedies when it comes to treating colds, and those strategies may include a daily glass of tea. Tea has been a beloved beverage for quite some time. According to the

UK Tea & Infusions Association, tea can be traced all the way back to 2737 B.C. in China. As the legend has it, Chinese Emperor Shen Nung was sitting beneath a tree when some leaves blew into some boiled drinking water his servant had been preparing for him. The emperor tried the concoction, and the rest is history.

Since tea was first (accidentally) consumed, it has become an integral part of many people’s daily lives. That’s even more so when people feel a little under the weather, which might prompt

some to wonder if tea actually boasts any medicinal properties or if it’s all just legend. According to Penn Medicine, various types of tea do, in fact, provide some notable health benefits.

White tea A comparative study published in the Journal of Food Science in 2010 found that white tea might be the most effective cancer-fighting tea thanks to its robust antioxidant content. Penn Medicine also notes white tea is a source of fluoride, catechins and tannins, which means it could help to strengthen teeth and fight plaque.

Herbal tea Harvard Medical School notes the curious distinction that herbal teas are not technically tea, as they typically lack the leaves or leaf buds of tea plants.

Herbal teas are in fact made from tisanes, which are blends or infusions of dried fruits, flowers, spices, or herbs. Harvard Medical School advises speaking with a physician prior to drinking herbal teas, as they can cause problems among individuals with certain medical conditions. If a doctor gives the green light for herbal teas, people may be happy to learn that they’ve been linked to a host of health benefits, including improved sleep, reduced stress and lower blood pressure, among others.

Green tea Penn Medicine notes that green tea is

high in flavonoids, which are a type of metabolite found in plants. Flavonoids have been linked to improved heart health because they can help to lower levels of bad cholesterol and reduce blood clotting. In addition, a 2014 study published in the European Journal of Nutrition concluded that green tea and its catechins can help to improve blood pressure.

Should certain teas be avoided?

Though white tea, herbal tea, green tea, and other forms of the popular beverage have been linked to various health benefits, Penn Medicine notes other types of tea are best avoided.

For example, detox teas, which Penn Medicine notes are often laced with laxatives, can be harmful to overall health. Bubble teas also tend to be high in sugar and calories. In general, it’s best to discuss tea with a physician before making it a part of your daily routine.

Tea can provide a host of health benefits, and individuals are urged to discuss those properties with a physician as they look to turn over a healthier leaf.

We’re in the realm of etymology, or

ultimately comes from buffalo — in a fairly convoluted fashion: Buff was originally a thick, soft leather, with the term being a shortened form of the animal from which it was obtained. The word then came to indicate the color of this material — a light brown-yellow, which many decades ago was the hue of uniforms worn by New York City’s volunteer firemen. This group was in turn so fond of attending and combating conflagrations that they got the nickname “Buffs” — and so the word eventually came to mean anyone who was especially devoted to something.

Engine, by contrast, is somewhat simpler: Again, calling on the Online Etymology Dictionary, this originally referred to skill or craft in warfare, particularly as embodied by any device used for combat (something as simple as a battering ram, for example).

Its ultimate source is the common Latin base gen, meaning to be born and thus related to anything innate, essential or “possessed from birth” (genetic, for example). An “engine”

shows skill and craft the moment it appears — and that goes double, I guess, for someone who’s ingenious.

(Middle English also had enginous and even engineful — which we’re probably now better off without!)

Even simpler is nausea: As covered recently on Jeopardy!, it is related to seagoing words like nautical, naval and even astronaut (literally, “star-sailor”).

Since ocean travel often makes folks queasy, we call that nausea.

Seasickness is likewise known as mal de mer, a French phrase employing the common base mal, meaning “bad,” and mer, meaning “sea” (as in mermaid and marine).

And pen is among this week’s clearest etymologies. It is, quite simply, an adaptation of the French word pene, meaning quill or feather — from which pens were once made. It is distantly related to the feather-shaped pennant and, keeping in mind the long, thin, pointy shape, possibly also connected to pin.

As for vermilion, that’s a bit more counterintuitive: The word itself describes a red or “cinnabar” color, especially when used as a dye; but in olden days, such bright dyes were

Medi is an extremely common Latin base meaning “middle” (as in median, medium, mediocre and dozens of other words). And as mentioned in last week’s column, terr is a similarly popular Latin base; meaning earth, it is found in such terms as terrain, subterranean, extraterrestrial and, yes, Mediterranean — which, being largely landlocked, literally means “sea in the middle of the earth.”

ow that we are in the dark depths of winter, with the forecast turning from freezing to snow, to rain, to not-so-freezing, it can be hard to get up the energy to go outside. But human hibernation is still not recognized as an acceptable coping mechanism for winter, so we must deal with the outdoors.

Of course, there are the beloved winter activities of snowshoeing, skiing, sledding, etc., but for the daily grind,

it can be quite a chore to suit up and interact with the world.

One way I find helpful in dealing with the malaise of winter is turning toward outerwear trends. Of course, trends can be fleeting, declining in popularity, and just as changeful as the weather.

However, certain classic styles will always be on trend today and in years to come. If you’re hankering for a new coat to ride out the rest of this winter, consider the following evergreen options.

First up, militaryinspired coats. Think double-breasted, think peacoat, think trench coat, think wool.

ervical cancer is the most common gynecologic cancer among women.

The American Cancer Society estimates about 13,960 new cases of invasive cervical cancer were

diagnosed and about 4,310 women died from cervical cancer in 2023.

Cervical cancer was once one of the most common causes of cancer death for American women. Fortunately, according to the American Cancer Society, screenings, such as the HPV test and Pap test, have greatly improved cancer detection and

treatment, and are playing a major role in lowering the death rate.

Screening Saves Lives Cervical cancer is caused by abnormal cell growth in the tissues of the cervix and develops slowly. There are no typical signs or symptoms of cervical cancer, which is why screening is essential to early detection and treatment.

The best way to find cervical cancer early is to have regular screening tests.

Regular screening has been shown to prevent cervical cancers and save lives. The tests for cervical cancer

screening are the HPV test and the Pap test. These tests can be done alone or at the same time and are done during a pelvic exam.

– A Pap (Papanicolaou) test is a procedure in which your doctor collects a small sample of cells from the surface of the cervix. The sample is then spread on a slide (Pap smear) or mixed in a liquid fixative (liquidbased cytology) and sent to a lab for examination under a microscope. The cells are examined for abnormalities that may point to abnormal cell changes, such as dysplasia or cervical

Because there are many different follow-up or treatment options depending on your specific risk of developing cervical cancer, it is best to talk to your healthcare provider about your screening results in more detail, to fully understand your risk of cervical cancer and what follow-up plan is best for you.

Be Proactive with Your Health While you may not need a Pap test every year, there are plenty of reasons to check in with your doctor for an annual well-woman visit. Regularly seeing your gynecologist assures that you set the right schedule for health screenings and catches potential problems early.

In addition to annual visits, here are some important ways to be proactive about your health to help prevent and detect gynecologic cancers quickly: – Pay attention to your body. Know what is normal for you and if a change occurs and lasts for more than two weeks, report it to your doctor promptly for further investigation.

roubles seem to just pile up on Theodore Doebler, 10, Williamsport R.D. 1, who was badly injured in a coasting accident Tuesday night on unprotected Packer Street hill.

Examinations at Williamsport Hospital have disclosed that Theodore had three teeth knocked out in the accident, which also produced double fractures to each of his legs when he was struck by a bobsled.

He broke his arm when he fell from a bicycle on January 10, that arm was in a cast when the coasting accident happened.

But worst of all, Doebler’s sled has been missing since the accident Tuesday night.

Teaching Proper Hunting and Firearm Safety

ny long-time hunter or gun owner has an inherent obligation to pass on his knowledge to an upcoming hunter or firearm enthusiast — whether they are a young person such as a son, daughter, grandchild, or neighborhood acquaintance or perhaps an adult who has become interested in hunting or gun ownership. It is critical to start them out right. Suppose you are an experienced licensed hunter or are an active participant in any of the numerous shooting venues such as skeet, trap, or sporting clays or one or more of the various pistol or rifle competitions. In that case, you are in a unique position to mentor a newly interested person in the safe handling of firearms and share hunting safety tips that you have learned over the years.

Hunting and firearm safety is something that must be instilled from the beginning and then carried through throughout the years that lie ahead. There are four universal rules of gun safety that should be taught at the very beginning of a teaching experience and then stressed throughout the entire process. These four rules are words to live by for anyone entering the realm of hunting or gun ownership.

Treat any firearm as if it is loaded!

This rule, if not observed, is probably the most frequently responsible for accidents involving firearms.

Treating every firearm as if it is loaded develops a mindset that is a safeguard against complacency, ensuring that no matter what the situation, the firearm is always handled with the utmost caution.

These four universal rules of safe gun handling are critical to enjoying a lifetime of accident-free shooting and hunting. All four need to be permanently ingrained in the mind and memory of someone who will be handling a firearm of any kind. All firearms are deadly, and an accidental discharge can have catastrophic results.

I am sorry to say that over my lifetime, I have personally witnessed when each and every one of these four rules have been broken by more than one individual. Fortunately, none of the occurrences resulted in injury to a person or animal or in any property damage. But each time, it was a stark reminder of how critically important it is to always keep in mind these four rules and, if necessary, remind others who may be guilty of breaking one or more of them.

Next time, let’s look at some safety tips that can apply to various hunting situations.

By following this rule, you greatly reduce the risk of accidental discharge. Involuntary trigger pull can sometimes occur when someone is startled or loses their balance. When you keep your trigger finger OUTSIDE the trigger guard, you greatly reduce the risk of unintentional shooting.

Always Be Aware of Your Target and the Area Around and Beyond It! This rule applies even if you are at an established shooting facility. Still, it is even more applicable when you are in a hunting situation or are in a self-defense situation. If hunting, POSITIVELY identify the animal or

Speaking of spikes, I also recommend wearing a pair of spikes on your boots to keep from slipping on the ice. It’s also a good idea to check the ice thickness frequently with a spud bar or your auger.

Speaking of keeping warm and comfortable, we certainly don’t want to forget our extremities — feet, hands, and heads. Cold feet can ruin a day on the ice in a hurry. I have been wearing a pair of insulated Irish Setter boots for many years, both for hunting and for my ice fishing. I get the boot a larger size and add a pair of wool socks; I’ve never had cold feet even in single-digit weather. These boots are extremely durable, wellinsulated, lightweight, and waterresistant. You also want a good warm pair of gloves, and maybe an extra pair, as well as a warm hat. I like the hat with the big fury ear flops that can be pulled down in really cold weather.

Speaking of ice thickness, it is recommended that you stay off ice that is less than three inches thick.

At least five to seven inches is much more comfortable, and I’ll take more if we can get it.

Something that concerns me about new ice fishermen and those who are just curious, are those who head out onto the ice because they see people out there is that it must be OK to go out anywhere — not so! Ice thicknesses vary on lakes for several reasons; do not assume that all the ice is safe — it isn’t.

If you are new to the activity, I suggest you go with somebody who has been around the ice fishing business for a while and has a good regard for safety. An added measure that most of us include is a pair of ice fishing spikes that hang around our necks in a closed position; if needed, you pull them apart, exposing the metal spikes that can be driven into the ice to help

Since the NFL introduced instant replay, the home team’s winning percentage has dropped from 58.5% to 56%.

Baseball fans rooting for the home team have been the most affected by diminishing home-field returns.

During the 2023 season, home teams won 53% of the games during the regular season. During the postseason, highlighted by the Texas Rangers 11-0 record on the road in winning the World Series, home teams won only 36%, the worst in any postseason since 1970.

Not long ago, in the 2019 World Series between Houston and Washington, the home team went 0-7.

The Rangers stand as the perfect example of the diminishing home field advantage.

They entered the playoffs as a wild card, had to travel to Tampa Bay, which owned the best home record in the league — and swept two games. Next up was a trip to Baltimore, owner of the best record in the American League, and swept them.

Down 3 games to 2 to Houston in the ALCS, they beat the Astros twice on their home field. Their ultimate test came in the World Series as they traveled to Phoenix, winning three straight games to stand atop the baseball world.

“Home sweet home” has sentimental appeal, but getting into the dance is what it’s all about. After that, it’s just ‘win baby.’

Regardless of the sports or what statistical data may suggest, most professional teams would rather be playing at home.

Many sports fans believe that crowd noise directly impacts a player’s performance.

It’s unknown what may be going on in a professional player’s head, but boos don’t particularly faze them during an away game.

While the crowd appears to have little effect on a player’s performance, research presented by a University of Pittsburgh study suggests that a large portion of the home edge is due to officiating bias in favor of the home team in the form of subjective calls. The study’s author, Konstantinos Pelechrinis, cites the following findings: “In baseball, during a full count, more pitches are called strikes for the home team’s pitcher. In the NHL, referees call 20% fewer penalties for home teams, which is equivalent to about 0.25 goals.

In the NBA, on average, more free throws are awarded to the home team. In soccer, referees add more stoppage time when the home team trails by a goal compared with when the home team is ahead by a goal.

Interestingly, referee bias is reduced when there is a track field separating the pitch and the fans.”

Many of the students and parents are now comfortable with this virtual experience.

Deciding to call a remote learning day is much easier than the decision to call a snow day. There is a lot of pressure to completely shut down. Remote days already have a structure in place.

Kids don’t do well online. Little guys especially struggle in this environment. Snow days are

fantastic.

Snow days are more of a reward.

Experiencing the hot chocolate and extra sleep is what it is all about.

We all have some great memories of these snow days.

COVID proved that remote

learning has some detrimental effects. Student’s social development and mental health were impacted.

Unlike the remotes, snow days allow families and friends to spend quality time together. Even something as simple as eating lunch together can go a long way.

Snow days are OK. Interesting debate. Again. I am going back and forth, folks.

Fortunately, the spring is on its way.

Perhaps we can revisit this another time. Cheers.
