MORNING POINTE ASSISTED LIVING
The Lantern at Morning Pointe The power of music in Alzheimer’s programming usic strikes a chord in their souls where nothing else can. It’s exactly what the local program directors see every day in the Alzheimer’s residents they work with, the power of music. “I am telling you, people come alive,” exclaims one director. “When I sing next to them, and show them where we are, people who can’t talk at least hum. One gentleman would say only the word Jesus every time we came to that word. It started to make me cry. The most spiritual part of a person can come alive through music.” Residents often join in together to sing, listen to music as part of their daily transition or simply to enjoy live performances from musical groups. “When they come to the activities, they lighten up, whether the music is provided by children or adults, the music drifts all over the building. People will start clapping to the beat and start moving their feet,” explains one director. Whether it’s music or other engaging activities at Morning Pointe, it all comes down to understanding the residents and creating meaningful days. It happens every day at Morning Pointe of Lenoir City Assisted Living’s STAR Program for those with increasing cognitive/physical needs, at the new free-standing Lantern Alzheimer’s Memory Care Center of Excellence on the same senior campus and at Morning Pointe of Clinton. All three Morning Pointe communities provide compassionate care through licensed nurses and professional caregivers, assistance with activities of daily living, three well-balanced meals and Active Living opportunities through its life enrichment program. The Meaningful Day programming is tailored to meet the unique needs of the memory care residents. Other services and amenities include medication management, transportation, a beauty/barber shop and a broad range of care tailored to meet individual needs. www.morningpointe.com

MARKLI HOME BUILDERS
Bob Markli An experienced professional artisan/craftsman
uilding a truly fine home is challenging even when money is no object. But Bob Markli is among that rare breed of professional, artisan/craftsmen whose lifetime of dedicated experience qualify him to build fine homes at reasonable cost. The only way to do this is for the builder to personally shepherd each project to completion, and that is exactly what he does. When you enlist Bob Markli, you get Bob Markli. Growing up in rural East Tennessee in a not-so-distant past when the clatter of the telegraph could still be heard in the Clinton station and old men still sat on the wall outside the county court house talking about the War of Southern Independence, Bob grew to love the history and sense of place that is the South. His father, a World War II Manhattan Project scientist and “renaissance man”, suffused his son with a vast knowledge of mechanics, physics and aesthetics at an early age. Bob’s professional career stretches back to the burgeoning Baltimore/ Washington corridor of the late 1960’s progressing rapidly from journeyman to subcontractor to general contractor while building everything from WalMart shopping centers, apartment and townhome complexes to entire single-family communities. Two years in France and Switzerland further honed his fluent French and people skills while exposing him to some of the world’s great architecture. Twenty-five years of building the area’s finest custom homes, often multiple homes for his clients, has made him one of the most trusted and sought after builders. From the sensitive interpretation of plans by the outstanding designers of our time, to the incomparably sensuous, organic harmony he creates between site and structure, there is no comparison to a Markli home. It is something felt as much as seen, and once understood, nothing else will ever satisfy. With a deep pool of the most talented architects, decorators, vendors and crafts people and an unfathomable reservoir of knowledge and experience, Markli Home Builders is the obvious choice for your new custom home project.

Build an Energy Efficient Home General Shale provides some helpful hints
he tried-and-true “American Dream to own a home is still alive. Therefore it is important when deciding to build a new home that proper steps are taken at the beginning stages of the building process. With that in mind, General Shale would like provide some helpful information that will show you how to build your new dream home that is energy efficient and cost effective. Deciding how to build your new home is determined by considering several variables. Perhaps the most obvious to consider is the cost to build and maintain. Understanding how materials and maintenance relate is important. While determining total cost is a very detailed process, a primary component is the home’s foundational and exterior structure. Researching these two aspects can help you get started in the right direction.
Consider researching: 1. Energy Codes and Regulations 2. Energy Efficient Building Materials
14 MARCH 20 1 3 A PLAC E C ALLE D HO M E | S P R I N G
Building codes and regulations can affect short-term and longterm costs of your home. Consulting your builder or a building materials representative is a great way to obtain important information on current codes, as well as those materials that best complies with each code or regulation. Understanding the latest energy code requirements is vital to the building process of your new home. Just recently, the International Code Council (IECC), responsible for energy efficiency standards in the U.S., issued an update to the 2012 International Energy Conservation Code. The new code contains more stringent requirements for new buildings to improve energy efficiency. Building with materials that comply with this new code will ensure low energy consumption for your home, in turn exponentially saving on energy costs over time. Understanding what building materials are most efficient for low energy consumption is also very important. For example, See General Shale on Page 15
Insurance rates may be necessarily lower for a house built with structural brick as it is more resistant to fires, tornadoes, hurricanes and even earthquakes. It is common for homeowners to expand or remodel their homes. These projects provide a great opportunity to lower energy consumption by remodeling exterior and interior walls with thin brick veneers (full size brick cut thin). They offer the same energy efficiency as full bed brick construction but cost less. Like its full brick and oversized structural brick counterparts, thin brick meets all new code requirements. By its very nature, brick is an easy choice in deciding the best material to build your new energy efficient home. Seeing your dream home built to completion is a rewarding experience; so much so that you might think you’re dreaming.
General Shale From page 14
brick is already in full compliance with new energy codes. Brick walls are “mass walls” which require less insulation due to its thermal mass properties. It absorbs temperatures, which keeps rooms cool during the warmer months and warm during the cooler months; thereby supporting lower energy consumption. Brick is low maintenance and has long-term performance which contributes to higher resale values. Additionally, a new structural brick that eliminates the need for load-bearing wood and steel framing is now available. This new product is oversized for safer, stronger, more energy efficient construction and suitable for any type of foundation.

LENOIR CITY UTILITIES BOARD
New LCUB logo commemorates
n honor of its upcoming 75th Anniversary in August, Lenoir City Utilities Board is introducing a new logo. First in line to show off the new design are the company utility trucks and vehicles. General Manager Shannon Littleton said the logo is a retro design of the company logo used in the 60s and 70s. Along with the retro look from the past, “LCUB has a vision of the future and is moving forward quickly toward a strong field of technology customers will soon be able to utilize and benefit from.” On August 19, 1938, LCUB began providing electric power supplied from the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) to cus-
tomers within the city and by the end of that year the electric department had 317 customers and 4 employees. Today, LCUB serves almost 80,000 customers of combined utility services in a three county service region with 138 employees. Littleton said his job as general manager is easier because “we have some of the best people in the valley working here.” LCUB’s service centers in Lenoir City, Farragut and Cedar Bluff are open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. For information or directions please call (865) 986-6591 or visit www.lcub.com.

From Here to Infinity and Green Friendly RS Exteriors and Infinity from Marvin have introduced to the home improvement market quite possibly the closest thing to a forever material there is available to make a window frame with: Ultrex. Ultrex is a brand name given this pultruded fiberglass material by Infinity from Marvin. The fact that it is a pultruded material rather than a layered fiberglass is what gives it the structural integrity that makes it stronger and superior to other fiberglass materials. Ultrex is second to none when comparing it Olen Rowe (left) and Glen Harness to other window framing materials. It will outperform and outlast materials such as vinyl, aluminum, wood, wood vinyl composites and aluminum clad wood. Couple this with the fact that it may be the most environmentally friendly window as well and you have the closest thing to a perfect material available. This material’s basic component is silicon sand. It takes 39% less embodied energy to manufacture than vinyl, it’s non-toxic, it can be recycled and the best thing about it is that we do not have to cut one single tree to make it. Some windows are known to give off a toxic form of irritant known as formaldehyde, which may cause temporary irritation of skin, eyes, or to the respiratory system. This is not the case with the Infinity from Marvin window. There are no toxins present, and we can leave our trees for our children to enjoy. What else could you ask for in providing a quality window? “Oh, did I mention very energy efficient, never having to sand, scrape, or paint again, along with having the beautiful appearance of a wood window? Now what else could you ask for?” said Glen Harness. “You say professionally installed? Well, call CRS Exteriors.” Marvin, which has been a family owned business since 1912 and has a well-earned reputation for both quality and innovation, has chosen CRS Exteriors as the exclusive window replacement specialist from Chattanooga to Bristol. So if you have an interest in replacing your windows or doors and want to experience it with a company that shares the same values as Marvin, call CRS Exteriors. Let us show you why we have become a super service award winner on Angie’s List and the number one Infinity from Marvin dealer in the country.

How to choose a builder hether the kids have all grown up and moved out or if the kids are on the way and it's time to expand a living area, building a new home is an exciting, yet often agonizing, experience. The reasons for building a new home are many, but regardless of the reason, the process of choosing a builder should remain the same. Andrew Nadalin, president of Pace 2000 Inc. and a fourth generation builder and craftsmen, offers the following advice to prospective homeowners with their eyes set on building a dream home to call their own. • Look for a builder with a solid reputation. A builder's reputation speaks volumes, but it doesn't have to speak for itself. That's because a builder who has spent years providing personal service, innovative design and quality workmanship will no doubt have a host of happy former customers ready and willing to offer their input. If during the interview process a builder appears reticent to share his work or experiences with previous customers, this should be a red flag. Reputable builders will be proud of their work and more than willing to show it off. • Find a builder who is flexible. You will be paying to build your home, not the builder's home. A builder should be flexible and ready and willing to meet your needs, no matter how unique they might be. • Look for a builder who does more than build. A builder should provide a network of qualified professionals to make the process go more smoothly. This network should include real estate and building consultants, interior designers, architects and engineers. Such connections can provide peace of mind and will also illustrate that a builder is both respected in the community and is intent on ensuring your home becomes the dream home you envision it to be. • Don't build on the cheap. Buyers who plan to build their own home are in the unique position to ensure their home is as safe and high-quality as possible. This isn't always the case when buying a

resale, so make the most of your opportunity and use only top-ofthe-line construction materials and features and choose a builder with experience in working with such materials and features. Building on the cheap could prove disastrous in the not too distant future, so don't sacrifice on quality when building a new home.
