York Racecard - Saturday 13th July

Page 1

A very warm welcome to one of the most famous days of our year, celebrating the 65th staging of the John Smith’s Cup as part of a big weekend of sport!

Every summer since 1960, racing fans have tried to solve this ultra-competitive handicap which is the richest 10f handicap in Britain. Everyone will have their own system for finding the winner, however Course & Distance form should always be respected, so Morhaba The Champ from the local yard of Kevin Ryan, or the Kubler team’s runner Astro King, should offer a strong interest in proceedings.

There are two tremendous Black Type races to enjoy, the Group 3 John Smith’s Silver Cup for stayers and the Listed John Smith’s City Walls for the sprinters. Again, a proven liking for the Knavesmire home straight will be demonstrated in the betting markets, expect to see Clarendon House who took the honours for Robert Cowell, when wining here in May, near the top of many lists for the feature sprint.

The support of everyone from John Smith’s, now and over all those decades, as well as your own backing today, sees the prize money this afternoon approach a record of over £460,000 - thank you for your support.

The entries for our big races at the Sky Bet Ebor Festival give us encouragement that many of the stars of the season, including some on show today, will return to the Knavesmire between Wednesday 21st and Saturday 24th August. Contenders in today’s races are shown by our logo next to their name. Seven of the eight runners in the Group 3 John Smith’s Silver Cup are entered in the Sky Bet Ebor, connections will hope to win today and then land the bulk of the £500,000 on Saturday 24th August. A number also retain the option of staying in Pattern company by having entered the Group 2 Weatherbys Hamilton Lonsdale Cup, back here on Friday 23rd August.

This afternoon, we are proud to give racegoers a chance to explore the Southern End Development (see p18-19). The Roberto Pavilion with its fast-serve bar and fish&chip shop, the Churchill Tyres Lawn and Canopy, Reg Bond Gates, improved Theakston Bar, William Hill betting shop and toilets. We hope you enjoy these latest improvements to our facilities as we use them for the first time this month as part of a “soft launch” ahead of a more formal opening at the Sky Bet Ebor Festival next month. Do let us know your thoughts!

Listen to your choice of live bands before, during and even after racing, maybe try one of Chef Hannah’s patisserie cakes from the ground floor eateries in both of the Ebor and Knavesmire Stands. Or stand by the finish to feel as well as hear the thunder of hooves in the final furlong. However you spend your raceday, I hope you have a thoroughly enjoyable and successful one

For now, raise a toast to the John Smith’s Cup and keep a little in your glass in the hope of raising it again tomorrow evening to a victorious England team.

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

EXPLORE IT TODAY

Southern End Development

Regular visitors to the Knavesmire will have seen the ongoing investment in the facilities for horses, participants and racegoers at York. This commitment to improve the experience of racing at York continues with the focus being the area that lies to the south of the Knavesmire Stand and behind the Bustardthorpe Stand.

From today, you can see a multi-million pound project that improves this area for Grandstand & Paddock racegoers, it is now open for you to enjoy. We’d value your feedback, as with any new development it should come on for the run.

The Roberto Pavilion provides a fast-serve bar, a fish & chip shop and a cocktail/Pimms bar. As well as, tote & William Hill outlets.

The Churchill Tyres Lawn and Canopy should be a great spot to relax and enjoy the food outlets and improved Theakston Bar that will flank it. A state of the art William Hill betting shop has reopened, with a new block of toilets.

In keeping with the Green Knavesmire 300 commitment, a host of sustainability features have been embedded; a living roof, rainwater harvesting and solar panels being examples.

THE HIGHLIGHTS ARE:

• Refurbishing the structure of the 1913 Bustardthorpe Stand viewing steppings.

• A new, single storey, fast serve Roberto Pavilion that includes a fast- serve bar, a fish & chip shop as well as a Pimms/Cocktail bar.

• Replacing and extending the existing single-storey extension to the rear of the Bustardthorpe Stand creating a new, bigger Theakston Bar and William Hill betting shop.

• Two new racegoer lawns with an overarching canopy similar to that covering the John Carr Terrace.

• Additional toilet, catering and betting facilities.

• Improved arrival experience, including feature gates that remember owner-breeder, Reg Bond and improved accessibility.

• Sustainability embedded into the development such as solar panels, green roofs and sustainable water provision, as the venue delivers on its Green Knavesmire 300 pledge.

The project is a little ahead of its scheduled Official Opening at the Sky Bet Ebor Festival, but we wanted you to try it today.

A RACECOURSE FOR ALL

We want the racecourse to offer both a welcome and an enjoyable day to all our racegoers and in delivering that we recognise that some may need additional assistance from us. We are also pleased to recognise the sunflower lanyard scheme.

The first thing to say, please just ask for help, if the team don’t have an instant answer, then they know someone who will. The team in the Racecourse Reception (behind the Ebor Stand) act as the link to the rest of the team, as needed.

FAQS

Is there accessible and blue badge parking?

Yes, I hope you found it. All our car parks have designated spaces near their front row. Can I get help with getting to/from the car park, taxi rank or shuttle buses?

Yes, there is a complimentary buggy service to all these points, ask a member of the team and they will radio to arrange your collection.. Thank you for your patience as the buggies can only transfer 4 people at a time and it’s a big site.

Can I bring a wheelchair?

Yes, if you need to; but we also offer complimentary hire, again from Racecourse Reception (see told you they were the hub). As we hope you’ll appreciate, there are only so many wheelchairs on site, if you need to reserve in advance then call 01904 620911. Considerately piloted mobility scooters are permitted.

Can I bring somebody to help?

Yes, we appreciate that will come in various forms, we hope our “carer comes free” scheme is a help, before your next visit check it out online at www.yorkracecourse. co.uk or just ask the team today.

Are there wheelchair viewing platforms?

Yes, in all stand side area and Stands - easiest thing to do is to ask our Stewards, though a map is available from, you guessed it, Racecourse Reception. Please use these in the spirit intended, with carers being prepared to step aside to allow space for those who need the view the most.

What about toilets and are they part of the Radar scheme?

Yes they are, all the permanent toilet blocks have a accessible capability, please ask for directions or check that map from you know where.

Are their wheelchair height food and drink counters?

Yes there are but not as many as we’d like, please ask a member of the team to assist you.

Wheelchair height betting?

Yes, there are some Tote counters set at a reduced height though a better plan might be to use the courier service that operates in areas such as the main Champagne Lawns; the Tote team themselves are always willing to help.

Can I bring my assistance dog?

Of course, as the tribute to Grady demonstrates, registered assistance dogs are most welcome.

There was one more thing?

Please ask, we are keen to help wherever we can, appreciating our racegoers may face a range of challenges.

Runners & Riders

The John Smith’s Racing Stakes

About One Mile (1,600 metres)

See page 78 for conditions of this race.

RACE DESCRIPTION

Distance: 1m

Race Type: Handicap

Rating: 86-105

Prize Money: £45,000

Age: 3+

Stalls: Inside Rail

The first of several competitive handicaps. Such races are designed for close competition so, the handicapper, is the independent assessor who rates horses on past performance seeking to get them crossing the line together, by handing out differing weights.

This one is for 3yo+ horses run over 1 mile, with Northern Express at the top of the scale

The high handicap rating band of 86-105 means that it will attract some smart types (like for Test cricketers a score of over 100 denotes a top performer).

Why not visit the Parade Ring to see them up close before making your final selection.

LAST YEAR’S RACE

Winner: BLUE FOR YOU

Trainer: David O’Meara

Jockey: Daniel Tudhope

Age/Weight: 5-10-2

Runners: 11 SP: 7/2

Despite dwelling at the start, Blue For You made up good ground to reel in his rivals and land the prize by three lengths.

RACE FACTS & STATISTICS

THE TALE OF THE CLOCK

Racing Post Standard Time: 1m 35.60s

Course Record: 1m 34.35s by Croupier (18-May-23)

All times are based where possible on the corresponding race over the last seven years

Leading course trainer (19-24): W Haggas (36 wins from 208 runners, 17%) runs ELNAJMM Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): K R Burke (10 wins from 46 runners, 22%) runs CUBAN TIGER

Weightwatcher: AUSTRIAN THEORY won off a handicap mark of 94, his rating is now down 7lb to 87.

Fancy That: D O’Meara won this race in 2015, 2019 and 2023. The stable runs BLUE FOR YOU and RHOSCOLYN today.

Longest Traveller: IMPERIAL FIGHTER trained by J Osborne, Upper Lambourn, 202 miles.

NOTE: All statistics are up to and including 11th July

KNAVESMIRE TIP

Blue For You has been out of luck so far this term but David O’Meara’s gelding is now 4lb lower than when landing the corresponding race 12 months ago, and he must feature prominently in calculations. La Trinidad won this in 2021 and his recent Redcar victory suggests another bold showing is likely. The unexposed ELNAJMM was a commanding winner on his handicap bow last month, though, and given that he ought to improve further, a 10lb hike might not be enough to prevent him from going in again.

With the first stage of entries received for the feature races at the

21 Wednesday

Things to do: Win a race that has twice been best

in the world

Thirty seven of the best middle distance horses are currently entered in the £1.25m Juddmonte International An intriguing list of hopefuls is made all the more interesting by the entry of Japanese St Leger winner, Durezza, owned by Carrot Farm Co Syndicate and trained by Tomohito Ozeki. It would be a first European excursion for the team and they will be hoping to go one better than Zenno Rob Roy, who finished second nearly twenty years ago after making the 25,000-mile round trip. France and Germany could be well represented with the likes of Horizon Dore and Zarakem, who were last seen finishing placed in the Group One Prince Of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot. Epsom Derby and Sandown Eclipse winner City Of Troy would likely be the chief hope of the Emerald Isle for Aidan O’Brien, he heads eleven potential runners from across the Irish Sea. Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai winner Economics hasn’t been seen on a racecourse since his emphatic triumph back in May, he would be a popular runner for William Haggas, if he decided to take up this engagement.

Become the sixteenth colt to win Sky Bet Great Voltigeur and Betfred

St Leger

Fifteen colts have done the double and this year’s list of entries provides plenty of hope that 2024 could see number increase to sixteen, following Continuous’s success last year. Illinois looks to be the leading hope after he won the Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot, he would be charting a similar path to the 2023 winner. Ambiente Friendly chased home City Of Troy in the Epsom Derby and then ran well again in the Irish equivalent, quicker ground may be the key should he come here. Charlie Appleby could be well represented with Ancient Wisdom and Arabian Crown. Locally owned Align The Stars will be hoping to give a big race win to Tony Farmer and trainer Charlie Johnston.

22 Thursday

Things to do: Prove to be one of the best fillies in Europe

The last time the race went over to mainland Europe was in 2012, when Shareta scored for Alain de Roger-Dupre, this year Les Bleus could have Melo Melo, in the colours of racings newest powerhouse, Wathnan Racing. She may not be alone, with Dare To Dream completing any potential French challenge for Gavin Hernon. Ballydoyle has had a strong grip on this race in recent years, winning three of the last four renewals. Port Fairy looks likely to lead the line after her Group Two victory in the Ribblesdale Stakes at Royal Ascot. In all, there are a dozen entries from the Emerald Isle, including from the likes of Willie Mullins, Jessica Harrington, Johnny Murtagh, Dermot Weld and Aidan’s son, Joseph. Bluestocking could be the one they all have to beat however, with Ralph Beckett’s four-year-old looking better than ever after winning the Group Two Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Middleton and the Group One Pretty Polly at the Curragh.

Sky Bet Ebor Festival, we mark your calendar.

23 Friday

Things

to

do: Be the fastest

The international theme continues into our fastest race of the week. A first Czech trained runner could be on the cards for Miroslav Nieslanik, his runner Ponntos has been in fine form this season. Australian revelation and Group One King Charles III winner, Asfoora, could give Henry Dwyer a first winner on the Knavesmire. They could well have 2023 winner Live In The Dream to beat, with two four-time winners this century already. The White Rose is often well represented, with this year shaping up to be no different, as Tim Easterby and the Quinns both have strong looking hands a this stage.

Follow in the hooves of greats like Mill Reef or Rock of Gibraltar

North Yorkshire could be well represented in the G2 Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Gimcrack Stakes, with Royal Ascot winner, Shareholder, the pick of the entries for Karl Burke. He remains unbeaten in two starts and would likely take a lot of stopping should he turn up here Brian Meehan’s Rashbar sprung an 80/1 surprise at the same summer highlight but would be a much shorter price should he take up his engagement. Charlie Appleby has won two of the last ten renewals, so keep tabs on Shadow Of Light and Aomori City.

24 Saturday

Things

to do: Earn a place in the

folklore of the Knavesmire

That is the honour that awaits the victor of one of the toughest flat handicaps in the world and one of the richest in Europe, the £500,000 Sky Bet Ebor. The beauty of a handicap is that you can make a case for all twenty-two who finally make the stalls, never mind the full entry list. So, which to mention; Sky Bet Race To The Ebor winners seem a logical place to start. Harry Eustace named the Sky Bet Ebor as the target for Crystal Delight following his win in the Jorvik. Saturn bagged himself a free ticket after winning at the Curragh. Middle Earth looks set for Group company rather than a handicap, while Klondike impressed back in June. Whoever wins, they can look forward to a warmer November than is on offer in Yorkshire, as the Sky Bet Ebor winner now has a guaranteed start in the Lexus Melbourne Cup. Hopefully the above sets the scene for a twenty eight race festival where £100,000 is the lowest prize fund and the richest maiden race in the land, the British Stallion Studs EBF Convivial Maiden Stakes, or the richest nursery handicap in the Sky Bet Stakes, add to the cocktail of high fashion and high class sport.

RACE DESCRIPTION

Distance: 5f

Race Type: Listed

Prize Money: £70,000

Age: 3+

Stalls: Centre

The John Smith’s City Walls is part of the Pattern pyramid which denotes the best contests, Listed (like this one), Group 3, Group 2 and Group 1.

At first principle, horses in such contests compete off a level weight, there is no handicap in operation. However, there are weight adjustments made for sex (Yeflemenko) and age (such as We Never Stop). To make for competition, additional weight is added if a horse has previously won at this level, hence the 9st 4lb burden of Clarendon House

If that is too brain-frying or you need someone to blame? Look at the Press Selections Board near the Winners Enclosure.

KNAVESMIRE TIP

Having all but refused to race in the Dash at Epsom last month, CLARENDON HOUSE was able to atone in a Listed race at Cork next time out. He was really impressive when scoring over C&D in May and is fancied to take all of the beating. Starlust failed to make an impact in the Commonwealth Cup last time but he can fare better in these calmer waters, while similar comments apply to Emaraaty Ana and Rogue Lightning.

John Smith’s Cup FACT FILE:

Distance 1m 2f 56y

Prize money £200,000

The John Smith’s Cup has been sponsored by John Smith’s Brewery since its inauguration in 1960, making it the longest running commercial sponsorship in flat racing.

WHAT WAS THE LARGEST FIELD?

The supersize stalls purchased in 2019 means a field of 22 today The smallest came in 1969 & 1982 when only six participants lined up

HAVE THERE BEEN ANY MULTIPLE WINNERS?

Prominent (‘71 & ‘72) and Chaumiere (‘85 & ‘86). Prominent was also third twice. Five others have won the race and been placed: Town And Country, Halkopous, Mr Confusion, Pasternak & Flying Clarets.

DOES SEX MATTER?

Yes, as only one mare, Flying Clarets (‘08), has won the race since Nortia was victorious in only the third running of the race This year none of the opposite sex will line up

IS AGE IMPORTANT?

Most definitely Only 6 six-year-olds and over have been successful - Raccolto (‘63), Farm Walk (‘68), My Swanee (‘69), Educate (‘16), Johnny Drama (21) and last years winner, Pride of America, maybe the tide is turning? 2020 winner, Sinjaari, 2017’s victor, Ballet Concert and 2022 winner Anmaat returned to trend by boosting the 4-y-o total, while the 2018 & 2019 winners, Euchen Glen and Pivoine, struck blows for the five-year-olds. Since 1978 the breakdown is as follows:

Three-year-olds - 14 (two dead-heated in 1987!)

Four-year-olds - 19

Five-year-olds - 11

Six-year-olds - 6

Seven-year-olds - 1

Flying Clarets

The late Major Dick Hern

LEADING TRAINERS?

Major Dick Hern won the race 6 times with Proud Chieftain, Nortia, Bold Pirate, Town And Country, Bedtime and Straight Man. Of the current crop of trainers Richard Fahey leads the way with three previous victories but the Musley Bank maestro is not represented this year William Haggas matched him after Sinjaari’s win behind closed doors in 2020, adding to Green Destiny in ‘11 and Danchai in ‘13 - Kingfisher King and Remaadd fly the Somerville Lodge flag today. Sir Michael Stoute also has two winners of the race to his name but this year is absent from the race

LEADING RIDER?

Geoff Baxter, Willie Carson and Tony Ives have each won the race three times but all are a longtime retired. None of those riding today find themselves on the roll of honour, so we will see a new name added to the list.

LONGEST WINNING DISTANCE?

Halkopous won by 7 lengths in 1991. The shortest followed a dead-heat between Brave Dancer and Wolsey in 1987. Both horses finished second but were placed first in the Stewards’ Room when Knockando was demoted due to interference.

WHO ARE THE SPONSORS?

HOW DO YORKSHIRE STABLES FIGURE?

Quite well in the early years of the millennium. Richard Fahey has won it three times (Vintage Premium (02), Charlie Tokyo (07) & Flying Clarets (08)) whilst David Barron (Sirvino (09)) and Karl Burke (Achilles (99)) have also added to the tally After a lean decade, Yorkshire is well represented in this year’s contest, with Karl Burke, Charlie Johnston, Adrian Keatley, David O’Meara and Kevin Ryan all saddling a runner in a bid for the 65th John Smith’s Cup

John Smith’s, based in Tadcaster, North Yorkshire has been the highest selling ale brand in the UK since the mid-1990s. John Smith’s Extra Smooth and Original are produced at Tadcaster, as well as a range of Heineken products including Kronenbourg 1664 and Newcastle Brown Ale. KNAVESMIRE TIP

A wide-open contest and only a tentative vote can go to FLYING FRONTIER. James Tate’s charge chased home a couple of useful types at the end of last season and there was encouragement to be taken from his Sandown reappearance. The unexposed son of Farhh ought to relish the step back up in trip, while the likely strong pace will also suit. Runner-up in the Wolferton, Haunted Dream is of interest returned to handicaps, while Epic Poet, Enfjaar, Liberty Lane and Paradias are just a handful of others to consider FLYING FRONTIER

RACE DESCRIPTION

SALT BAY 4th Race 3.45

Distance: 1m 6f

Race Type: Group Three

Prize Money: £85,000

Age: 4+

Stalls: Inside Rail

Our fourth race flips back to those Pattern conditions, this time it is actually a step higher up in quality, being a Group 3.

This race is open to 4yo+ horses and is over a trip of 1 mile 6 furlongs. All that complicated stuff about reductions for being a filly or a penalty for having won at a good level still apply, only this year the field have made it easier for us by all being male and none having recently recorded a W at this level.

Remember the winner because previous victors have gone on to contest Australia’s best-known race, the Lexus Melbourne Cup, with seven of them today entered in the £500,000 Sky Bet Ebor, set for Saturday 24 August.

Need some help? Look further for the letter “C”, which shows that the horse has won at York or “D” which denotes a win over this distance; Klondike has both initials

LAST YEAR’S RACE

Winner: HAMISH

Trainer: William Haggas

Jockey: Tom Marquand

Age/Weight: 7-9-3

Runners: 5 SP: 4/9F

Hamish looked to be well clear on ratings and despite a 3lb penalty, just did enough to hold off the persistent challenge of More Felons.

KNAVESMIRE TIP

Klondike beat Salt Bay (second) by a short head in the Ebor Grand Cup over track and trip last month, but the latter arguably has more scope for improvement over this distance and could reverse the form. However, they could both be up against it to deny DEAUVILLE LEGEND the win. James Ferguson’s five-year-old took the Great Voltigeur here in 2022 and he produced a much better effort to finish third in the Fred Archer at Newmarket last time Al Qareem is another to note.

A further handicap to solve, this time limited to 2yo’s and although they are the babies of the equine world their previous runs mean that they should all know what they are here to do The handicapper has judged The Flying Seagull as the best of a still inexperienced field.

More significantly, dedicated race watchers and bookmakers will be aware of them so perhaps look for a clue in the betting market.

RACE FACTS & STATISTICS

THE TALE OF THE CLOCK

Racing Post Standard Time: 1m 10s

Course Record: 1m 8.90s by Tiggy Wiggy (21-Aug-14)

All times are based where possible on the corresponding race over the last seven years

Leading course trainer (19-24): R Fahey (29 wins from 440 runners, 7%) runs DEATH OR GLORY and MRBLUESKY and TUSCAN POINT

Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): K R Burke (10 wins from 46 runners, 22%) runs TRIPLE CHARGED

Fancy That: K Ryan won this race in 2016 and 2018. The stable runs EAST TYRONE today.

Longest Travellers: OAKLEY BOY trained by S C Williams, SIR PALAMEDES trained by C Fellowes, ALASHOS trained by James Horton - all Newmarket, 163 miles.

NOTE: All statistics are up to and including 11th July

KNAVESMIRE TIP

Alashos made every yard of the running to score by a neck at Lingfield earlier in the month and he should be competitive on his nursery debut off a mark of 75. However, the vote goes to TRIPLE CHARGED, who wasn’t disgraced in third behind Electrolyte on his penultimate start at Ayr and ran too bad to be true when well beaten at Hamilton last time. Karl Burke’s yard remains in great form and he looks the one to be on. Eighteen Fourteen and Perfidia are others to consider

Those ticklish handicaps to solve keep acoming, this is over the longest distance of the day, some 2miles. As stamina is required, it is perhaps no surprise that the majority of the field are that bit older and so a little better known to punters and bookies alike. Will a 4year old such as Tailorman, surprise them today?

KNAVESMIRE TIP

LETSBEFRANK showed further progress when upped to 1m6f at Thirsk and returning a cosy winner This extra distance looks well within his compass, and the hat-trick beckons for Jim Goldie’s four-year-old. The veteran Red Force One is enjoying a new lease of life and landed a treble courtesy of last month’s Newmarket success, while Tailorman remains unexposed and is another to consider

SIXTH RACE PRESENTATION & BEST TURNED OUT

The trophy for this race will be presented to the winning owner after the race by Dennis Van De Sanden, Global Account Manager, Heineken UK Ltd.

John Smith’s have generously given £100 to the racing groom responsible for the best turned out horse in this race.

The Championship will be determined by the number of winners recorded and in the event of a tie, placed efforts will prove the deciding factor. The winner will receive the coveted Charles Clinkard Trophy and a smart pair of shoes plus £2,500 for the stable to share and a Christmas Party here at York in December.

Tolstoy made it three wins on the bounce at York, to move Brian Ellison just one behind leader Kevin Ryan, meaning Yorkshire yards occupy three of the top five spots.

If you finish the day as winner, congratulations, why not come back and try to win some more on Friday evening 26th July
