The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.
Racing Post Standard Times

Non-runner
Ground - The Trainer states the ground is not suitable for this horse, the official going has changed since the time of declaration.

A RACECOURSE FOR ALL
We want the racecourse to offer both a welcome and an enjoyable day to all our racegoers and in delivering that we recognise that some may need additional assistance from us. We are also pleased to recognise the sunflower lanyard scheme.
The first thing to say, please just ask for help, if the team don’t have an instant answer, then they know someone who will. The team in the Racecourse Reception (behind the Ebor Stand) act as the link to the rest of the team, as needed.
FAQS
Is there accessible and blue badge parking?
Yes, I hope you found it. All our car parks have designated spaces near their front row. Can I get help with getting to/from the car park, taxi rank or shuttle buses?
Yes, there is a complimentary buggy service to all these points, ask a member of the team and they will radio to arrange your collection.. Thank you for your patience as the buggies can only transfer 4 people at a time and it’s a big site.
Can I bring a wheelchair?
Yes, if you need to; but we also offer complimentary hire, again from Racecourse Reception (see told you they were the hub). As we hope you’ll appreciate, there are only so many wheelchairs on site, if you need to reserve in advance then call 01904 620911. Considerately piloted mobility scooters are permitted.
Can I bring somebody to help?
Yes, we appreciate that will come in various forms, we hope our “carer comes free” scheme is a help, before your next visit check it out online at www.yorkracecourse. co.uk or just ask the team today.
Are there wheelchair viewing platforms?
Yes, in all stand side area and Stands - easiest thing to do is to ask our Stewards, though a map is available from, you guessed it, Racecourse Reception. Please use these in the spirit intended, with carers being prepared to step aside to allow space for those who need the view the most.
What about toilets and are they part of the Radar scheme?
Yes they are, all the permanent toilet blocks have a accessible capability, please ask for directions or check that map from you know where.
Are their wheelchair height food and drink counters?
Yes there are but not as many as we’d like, please ask a member of the team to assist you.
Wheelchair height betting?
Yes, there are some Tote counters set at a reduced height though a better plan might be to use the courier service that operates in areas such as the main Champagne Lawns; the Tote team themselves are always willing to help.
Can I bring my assistance dog?
Of course, as the tribute to Grady demonstrates, registered assistance dogs are most welcome.
There was one more thing?
Please ask, we are keen to help wherever we can, appreciating our racegoers may face a range of challenges.

TOP TRAINER AT YORK AWARD
The Championship will be determined by the number of winners recorded and in the event of a tie, placed efforts will prove the deciding factor. The winner will receive the coveted Charles Clinkard Trophy and a smart pair of shoes plus £2,500 for the stable to share and a Christmas Party here at York in December.
Ralph Beckett kicked off the day with a win in our opener, as Lord Melbourne became the latest winner of the Queen Mother’s Cup.

The best, on past performance, will be the highest rated horse, Brazen Bolt finds himself at the top and so will carry most weight.
If you are looking for help, follow the racecourse tipster, Baron Ferdinand, who has marked his selections with a red bi plane

KNAVESMIRE TIP
TOLSTOY has turned a corner since stepping back up to 7f on his last two starts, winning both of them on successive days at this track in June, and the manner of both victories suggested the five-year-old may well have more to offer, especially with his rider’s 7lb claim to take advantage of. Quest For Fun was runner-up to the selection on the latter occasion and has to be a player off just 1lb higher Others for the shortlist include Silver Samurai and Catch The Paddy

Southern End Development
Regular visitors to the Knavesmire will have seen the ongoing investment in the facilities for horses, participants and racegoers at York. This commitment to improve the experience of racing at York continues with the focus being the area that lies to the south of the Knavesmire Stand and behind the Bustardthorpe Stand.
From today, you can see a multi-million pound project that improves this area for Grandstand & Paddock racegoers, it is now open for you to enjoy. We’d value your feedback, as with any new development it should come on for the run.
The Roberto Pavilion provides a fast-serve bar, a fish & chip shop and a cocktail/Pimms bar. As well as, tote & William Hill outlets.
The Churchill Tyres Lawn and Canopy should be a great spot to relax and enjoy the food outlets and improved Theakston Bar that will flank it. A state of the art William Hill betting shop has reopened, with a new block of toilets.
In keeping with the Green Knavesmire 300 commitment, a host of sustainability features have been embedded; a living roof, rainwater harvesting and solar panels being examples.
THE HIGHLIGHTS ARE:
• Refurbishing the structure of the 1913 Bustardthorpe Stand viewing steppings.
• A new, single storey, fast serve Roberto Pavilion that includes a fast- serve bar, a fish & chip shop as well as a Pimms/Cocktail bar.
• Replacing and extending the existing single-storey extension to the rear of the Bustardthorpe Stand creating a new, bigger Theakston Bar and William Hill betting shop.
• Two new racegoer lawns with an overarching canopy similar to that covering the John Carr Terrace.
• Additional toilet, catering and betting facilities.
• Improved arrival experience, including feature gates that remember owner-breeder, Reg Bond and improved accessibility.
• Sustainability embedded into the development such as solar panels, green roofs and sustainable water provision, as the venue delivers on its Green Knavesmire 300 pledge.
The project is a little ahead of its scheduled Official Opening at the Sky Bet Ebor Festival, but we wanted you to try it today.

The William Hill Summer Stakes FACT FILE:
WHAT IS THE HISTORY OF THIS RACE?
WHO WAS THE FIRST WINNER?
Carranita won the first renewal for trainer Bryn Palling and jockey Tim Sprake.
Distance
Six furlongs
Prize money £85,000
The William Hill Summer Stakes was first run in 1996 when it was a Listed contest for fillies and mares aged three and above. It was upgraded to Group 3 status in 2003.
HAVE ANY WINNERS SCALED EVEN GREATER HEIGHTS?
Serious Attitude won the Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes during her juvenile season and after her win here went on to land another Group 1 in Canada.
The 2004 winner Tante Rose was arguably the classiest as she won the Group 1 Haydock Sprint Cup two months after victory here.
Last year’s winner, Swingalong, is now a regular on the podium of Group One sprints, finishing second at Royal Ascot last month.
WHAT IS THE FASTEST TIME FOR THE RACE?
That honour falls to Ladies Are Forever, owned by the much missed Reg Bond, who recorded a time of 1min 9.18secs in 2011. She also ran the second fastest time of 1min 9.30secs in 2014.
ANY OVERSEAS-TRAINED WINNERS?
Theann became the first overseas-trained winner when landing the spoils for Aidan O’Brien and Seamie Heffernan in 2007. In 2012 the prize went to Germany when Gracia Directa was partnered to victory by Robert Winston for the Hamburg-based trainer Dominik Moser. That filly will remain the last winner based overseas as all of today’s competitors hail from British yards.
Gracia Directa
The late Reg Bond with his star mare
Geoff Oldroyd
LEADING TRAINERS?
Geoff Oldroyd won this race three times in recent years courtesy of his flying filly Ladies Are Forever Toby Balding managed to win the race twice with Palace Affair in 2001 & 2002 whilst Richard Hannon Snr also won the race twice with Nanoushka in 1998 and Lucky Spin in 2005. Handlers with a runner today who have already won the race are William Haggas, who saddles Pink Crystal and Unequal Love, Richard Fahey who won the race in 2010, sends Marine Wave and Pretty Crystal. Kevin Ryan and Marco Botti also feature on the roll of honour, they saddle Silent Words and Great Generation respectively
LEADING RIDER?
Two jockeys’ have won this race more than once. Steven Carson partnered Palace Affair to back-to-back victories. Recently retired Paul Hanagan joined him in 2019 when guiding Royal Intervention to victory for Ed Walker Nine years prior he had won the race on Rose Blossom, for the Yorkshire based Richard Fahey. Tom Marquand and Jason Hart have both ridden one winner and will go in search of the double today.
HAT-TRICK
HEAVEN
In 2014, Ladies Are Forever achieved the quite remarkable feat of winning this race three times. Interestingly, for each of her three victories in 2011, 2013 & 2014 she was ridden by a different jockey - Silvestre De Sousa, Graham Lee & Danny Tudhope respectively She didn’t take part in 2012!
WHO ARE THE SPONSORS?
Founded in 1934, William Hill is one of the most trusted brands in the marketplace, attracting millions of customers from around the world. They now bring that expertise to the Retail betting shops here at York.
HOW DO YORKSHIRE STABLES FIGURE?
Initially not all that well. Tim Easterby won it with Hot Tin Roof in 2000 but we had to wait until 2010 for another Yorkshire-trained winner when Rose Blossom scored for Richard Fahey. Since, then Geoff Oldroyd has boosted the tally thanks to the success of Ladies Are Forever, while Kevin Ryan’s Queen Jo Jo and Karl Burke’s Swingalong continue make sure the White Rose features prominently on the roll of honour It falls to Silent Words, Marine Wave and Pretty Crystal to continue this recent trend.

RACE DESCRIPTION
Distance: 6f
Race Type: Group Three
Prize Money: £85,000
Age: 3+ f&m
Stalls: Centre
The William Hill Summer Stakes is part of the Pattern pyramid which denotes the best contests, Listed, Group 3 (like this one), Group 2 and Group 1.
In the search for competition, this race is only open to older fillies and mares. Weight allowances are made for the variation in strength of 3yos; notice how Prime Art is one of seven to benefit. Conversely a previous win at this level or higher, attracts a penalty weight, which explains the extra 3lb for Pretty Crystal and Great Generation.
An in-form stable could be the charm here, see the table at the beginning of this race

KNAVESMIRE TIP
UNEQUAL LOVE continues her progression up the ladder and backed up a Listed success at Newmarket when taking the Wokingham at Royal Ascot. Connections were slightly concerned about fast ground on that occasion but, with plenty of rain falling on the Knavesmire earlier in the week, the daughter of Dutch Art may well have a bigger performance in the locker. Nell Gwyn heroine Pretty Crystal didn’t stay in the 1000 Guineas and has to be respected dropping back to sprinting, while Raqiya and Great Generation are both capable of further improvement.

AUGUST CALENDAR
With the first stage of entries received for the feature races at the
21 Wednesday
Things to do: Win a race that has twice been best
in the world
Thirty seven of the best middle distance horses are currently entered in the £1.25m Juddmonte International An intriguing list of hopefuls is made all the more interesting by the entry of Japanese St Leger winner, Durezza, owned by Carrot Farm Co Syndicate and trained by Tomohito Ozeki. It would be a first European excursion for the team and they will be hoping to go one better than Zenno Rob Roy, who finished second nearly twenty years ago after making the 25,000-mile round trip. France and Germany could be well represented with the likes of Horizon Dore and Zarakem, who were last seen finishing placed in the Group One Prince Of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot. Epsom Derby and Sandown Eclipse winner City Of Troy would likely be the chief hope of the Emerald Isle for Aidan O’Brien, he heads eleven potential runners from across the Irish Sea. Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai winner Economics hasn’t been seen on a racecourse since his emphatic triumph back in May, he would be a popular runner for William Haggas, if he decided to take up this engagement.
Become the sixteenth colt to win Sky Bet Great Voltigeur and Betfred
St Leger
Fifteen colts have done the double and this year’s list of entries provides plenty of hope that 2024 could see number increase to sixteen, following Continuous’s success last year. Illinois looks to be the leading hope after he won the Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot, he would be charting a similar path to the 2023 winner. Ambiente Friendly chased home City Of Troy in the Epsom Derby and then ran well again in the Irish equivalent, quicker ground may be the key should he come here. Charlie Appleby could be well represented with Ancient Wisdom and Arabian Crown. Locally owned Align The Stars will be hoping to give a big race win to Tony Farmer and trainer Charlie Johnston.
22 Thursday
Things to do: Prove to be one of the best fillies in Europe
The last time the race went over to mainland Europe was in 2012, when Shareta scored for Alain de Roger-Dupre, this year Les Bleus could have Melo Melo, in the colours of racings newest powerhouse, Wathnan Racing. She may not be alone, with Dare To Dream completing any potential French challenge for Gavin Hernon. Ballydoyle has had a strong grip on this race in recent years, winning three of the last four renewals. Port Fairy looks likely to lead the line after her Group Two victory in the Ribblesdale Stakes at Royal Ascot. In all, there are a dozen entries from the Emerald Isle, including from the likes of Willie Mullins, Jessica Harrington, Johnny Murtagh, Dermot Weld and Aidan’s son, Joseph. Bluestocking could be the one they all have to beat however, with Ralph Beckett’s four-year-old looking better than ever after winning the Group Two Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Middleton and the Group One Pretty Polly at the Curragh.
Sky Bet Ebor Festival, we mark your calendar.
23 Friday
Things to do: Be the fastest
The international theme continues into our fastest race of the week. A first Czech trained runner could be on the cards for Miroslav Nieslanik, his runner Ponntos has been in fine form this season. Australian revelation and Group One King Charles III winner, Asfoora, could give Henry Dwyer a first winner on the Knavesmire. They could well have 2023 winner Live In The Dream to beat, with two four-time winners this century already. The White Rose is often well represented, with this year shaping up to be no different, as Tim Easterby and the Quinns both have strong looking hands a this stage.
Follow in the hooves of greats like Mill Reef or Rock of Gibraltar
North Yorkshire could be well represented in the G2 Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Gimcrack Stakes, with Royal Ascot winner, Shareholder, the pick of the entries for Karl Burke. He remains unbeaten in two starts and would likely take a lot of stopping should he turn up here Brian Meehan’s Rashbar sprung an 80/1 surprise at the same summer highlight but would be a much shorter price should he take up his engagement. Charlie Appleby has won two of the last ten renewals, so keep tabs on Shadow Of Light and Aomori City.
24 Saturday
Things to do: Earn a place in the folklore of the Knavesmire
That is the honour that awaits the victor of one of the toughest flat handicaps in the world and one of the richest in Europe, the £500,000 Sky Bet Ebor The beauty of a handicap is that you can make a case for all twenty-two who finally make the stalls, never mind the full entry list. So, which to mention; Sky Bet Race To The Ebor winners seem a logical place to start. Harry Eustace named the Sky Bet Ebor as the target for Crystal Delight following his win in the Jorvik. Saturn bagged himself a free ticket after winning at the Curragh. Middle Earth looks set for Group company rather than a handicap, while Klondike impressed back in June. Whoever wins, they can look forward to a warmer November than is on offer in Yorkshire, as the Sky Bet Ebor winner now has a guaranteed start in the Lexus Melbourne Cup. Hopefully the above sets the scene for a twenty eight race festival where £100,000 is the lowest prize fund and the richest maiden race in the land, the British Stallion Studs EBF Convivial Maiden Stakes, or the richest nursery handicap in the Sky Bet Stakes, add to the cocktail of high fashion and high class sport.

KNAVESMIRE TIP
Royalty Bay won well on debut at Ripon before running with plenty of credit behind the smart Fairy Godmother in the Albany at Royal Ascot. However, a chance is taken with SPHERICAL, who received little luck in running when contesting the Queen Mary and Roger Varian’s filly, who had impressed on her first start at Yarmouth, deserves another chance to show her true potential. Miss Hathaway’s experience ought to stand her in good stead and she appeals most of the remainder

Back to handicap conditions, your vital statistics are; 3yo, rated 66-85, going a mile and a quarter, with Parlando considered the best by the handicapper on previous form.
“Offer a chance for everyone” is a good maxim for those planning races and in this contest the upper rating of 85 means that these are still quality horses but they won’t have their spotlight stolen by a real superstar
If you are seeking inspiration (or someone to blame), look at the Press Selections Board, adjacent to the Winner’s Enclosure.

Handicap debutant Solomon was last seen finishing third to Guineas winner Notable Speech at Kempton in February and an opening mark of 86 looks lenient on that evidence. However, WHISKEY PETE, who won here last October, posted a creditable fifth in the Golden Gates at Royal Ascot last month and he might be worth taking a chance on now eased in class. The free-going Al Rufaa was more amenable in the Carlisle Bell last time and would not be without a chance if able to build on that performance.

As this year’s Tour de France sets off from Agen in South-West France, it will be just over ten years since the colour and excitement of a different type of race visited the Knavesmire.
GEORGE NORMAN BLADES
15TH JULY 1939 - 8TH APRIL 2023

His smile and cheeky sense of humour always made the day fun, win or lose!!
George would have loved having a race run in his memory and we, as a family, know he is looking down on us today with his smile.
George is loved and missed today and everyday by all his family and friends

KNAVESMIRE TIP
The vote goes to TITAINIUM, who justified strong market support to record a breakthrough success at Newcastle last month. The manner in which Grant Tuer’s charge kept on over 7f that day would suggest he can be even better now upped to the mile, for all that an 8lb rise will make things tougher. Tiaraqueen struck on her return at Wetherby recently and she is of clear interest now sent handicapping, while others to note include Drink Dry and Sisyphean.

Another competitive handicap for 3yo+ horses, run over the shortest rip in UK racing, just five furlongs.
Remember, it’s a handicap so the best on past performance in the eyes of the handicapper will be the highest rated horse and start by carrying the most weight, Muker in this instance. However, connections can opt to use an apprentice jockey and so claim a reduction, see how he has 5lb lifted from his back as Alex Jary takes the ride
So, pit your wits against the handicapper – as clues, look for C (has won at York) or D (has won over this distance) against the horse’s name- Copper Knight carries both as testament to his record setting seven previous wins at York.

KNAVESMIRE TIP
WEN MOON shaped with more promise than the result suggests when finishing fifth over 5f at Chester last month and, after bumping into a smart performer when runner-up over 6f at Pontefract earlier this week, it would be no surprise if he were able to go one place better off the same mark back at the minimum trip. The ageless Copper Knight is the type to bounce back quickly and he must enter calculations, despite a low-key effort at Newcastle recently A 4lb penalty for a recent Nottingham victory doesn’t discount Never Dark either

SIXTH RACE PRESENTATION & BEST TURNED OUT
The trophy for this race will be presented to the winning owner after the race by Mary Ryan.
Irish Thoroughbred Marketing have generously given £100 to the racing groom responsible for the best turned out horse in this race as well as £50 to the winning groom.
COPPER KNIGHT: WINNING-MOST HORSE
EYES ON OUR SIXTH RACE WHEN COPPER KNIGHT, HOPES TO RECORD WIN NUMBER EIGHT.
The Denham family first ran Copper Knight at York back in 2017 when he won the first of his seven races. It was an assertive performance over then stable mate Rasheeq and was very much a sign of things to come. He had further success at York before taking his most prestigious prize at the track. The John Smith’s City Walls Stakes 2019, his first Listed success. His superb seventh victory came back in July.
A plaque has been erected in his honour on the pre-parade ring side of the weighing room, where it reads ‘winning most’, as he may well not be done with winning at York just yet! Last July Copper Knight made history by registering another win on the Knavesmire. He remains a stalwart of Tim Easterby’s operation, with a record breaking seven wins. Will Copper Knight continue to make history with an eighth win today on his 29th run at York?

A final handicap but with an added dimension to the contest, in that this time, all the riders are still apprentices.
Connections can reduce the weight carried by their contender by choosing which apprentice jockey to use; the level of the reduction depends on the past success of that apprentice. You can see this reflected in the bracketed figure after the rider’s name. Rising star, Mark Winn, has enough winners in the bank that Arkendale gets no relief; whereas the Kitsune Power/Alex Fielding partnership are 7lbs better off, as the young pilot learns the trade
Pick the winner and then you can bask in the glory until around 2.02pm tomorrow afternoon.

KNAVESMIRE TIP
COCKALORUM could send his supporters home on a high in a wide-open finale He cosily accounted for a subsequent winner over 1m2f at Beverley last month and, upped in trip off a 3lb higher mark, he makes most appeal. Kitsune Power was last seen winning over 1m6f at Thirsk and he warrants respect upped 3lb, for all that the step back in trip asks a question of him. Good Too and Piecederesistance are a couple of others who must enter calculations.
