Welcome Welcome to York Racecourse for the final raceday of our 2021 season; a day with seven fascinating races offering a prize fund of over £250,000, including a six-figure purse for the Coral Sprint Trophy. I hope you have a successful and thoroughly enjoyable day. For all that is has been an unusual year, we have seen some tremendous performances on the track so far with some of the very best racehorses and jockeys in the world having competed at York, the likes of Mishriff, Snowfall, Hurricane Lane, Winter Power and Stradivarius, making memories for us all. Some of the stars from our season are set to contest QIPCO British Champions Day next Saturday at Ascot. The richest ever day of racing in the UK is the culmination of the British Champions Series - if you can’t make it in person then follow the action on ITV and Racing TV. See p44-45 for some memory joggers. Our feature sponsor, Coral, have been associated with this day since 1979 and the £100,000 Coral Sprint Trophy highlights the investment in prize money. Gulliver is biding to make it a remarkable three wins from three in the race and should he be successful it would be a tremendous feat. The feature race looks to offer a fascinating clash between emerging stars of this category such as Strike Red for nine-time York champion trainer Richard Fahey, against some proven heads. None more so than Copper Knight, the winning most horse here in the modern era with six visits to the Winner’s Enclosure to date. Yesterday, Yorkshire based Tim Easterby extended his lead in the Charles Clinkard Top Trainer Championship at York. So, with just seven races still to play for it will need something remarkable to overhaul the team from Great Habton who have posted twelve winners, not to mention eleven second places. See p38-39 for more details on this season’s competition. Today will also see the conclusion of the season long contest to be top jockey at York in the Living North-sponsored race. A long-time favourite of the Northern circuit David Allan, sits two behind the talented Tom Marquand, though an ill-timed suspension puts him on the sidelines today. Others hold faint hope that their northern connections may herald a day to remember in mounting a late charge. Please see page 31 for the story so far. Remember if you want to follow all the action from Newmarket and York, then use the Racing TV zone on the Roberto lawn, a bar, good food to go, seating and the channel on a giant screen. As our season draws to a close, we bid a fond farewell to Hugh Barclay, the main man down at the Starts on the Knavesmire for over forty years, following a distinguished stint in the amateur rider ranks - happy retirement and thank you, Hugh. Thank you again for your support today and throughout this year, I hope you thoroughly enjoyed both the season and today. Winter well and I hope you can return for our new season on Wednesday 11th May 2022, the tickets go on sale online later today.

A RACECOURSE FOR ALL

We want the racecourse to offer both a welcome and an enjoyable day to all our racegoers and in delivering that we recognise that some may need additional assistance from us.

The first thing to say, please just ask for help, if the team don’t have an instant answer, then they know someone who will. The team in the Racecourse Reception (behind the Ebor Stand) act as the link to the rest of the team, as needed. FAQS Is there disabled and blue badge parking? Yes, I hope you found it. All our car parks have designated spaces near their front row. Can I get help with getting to/from the car park, taxi rank or shuttle buses? Yes, there is a complimentary buggy service to all these points, ask at racecourse reception or next time you arrive just call 01904 620911. Thank you for your patience as the buggies can only transfer 4 people at a time and it’s a big site. Can I bring a wheelchair? Yes, if you need to; but we also offer complimentary hire, again from Racecourse Reception (see told you they were the hub). As we hope you’ll appreciate, there are only so many wheelchairs on site, if you need to reserve in advance then call 01904 620911. Can I bring somebody to help? Yes, we appreciate that will come in various forms, we hope our “carer comes free” scheme is a help, before your next visit check it out online at www.yorkracecourse.co.uk or just ask the team today. Are there wheelchair viewing platforms? Yes, in all stand side area and Stands - easiest thing to do is to ask our Stewards, though a map is available from, you guessed it, Racecourse Reception. Please use these in the spirit intended, with carers being prepared to step aside to allow space for those who need the view the most. What about toilets and are they part of the Radar scheme? Yes they are, all the permanent toilet blocks have a disabled capability, please ask for directions or check that map from you know where. Are their wheelchair height food and drink counters? Yes there are but not as many as we’d like, please ask a member of the team to assist you. Wheelchair height betting? Yes, there are some Tote counters set at a reduced height though a better plan might be to use the courier service that operates in areas such as the main Champagne Lawns; the Tote team themselves are always willing to help. There was one more thing? Please ask, we value your feedback so we can keep improving in this area.

FACES BEHIND THE RACES:

MAITI STIRLING Marketing & Sponsorship Executive

HOW MANY YEARS HAVE YOU WORKED AT YORK RACECOURSE?

This is my third season in my current role. Before that I was the Marketing Assistant for 3 seasons.

OUTSIDE THE RACEDAYS AT YORK, WHAT DO YOU DO THE REST OF THE YEAR?

Plan for the following season! I oversee all the production of the brochures for the following season and update the website.

HOW DID YOU BECOME INVOLVED IN RACING AT YORK

From when I was 10 years old my family have been involved in racing. When at university I emailed York asking if there were any summer roles available, I worked on the Pink Lady team then in the Owners & Trainers Restaurant. That led to a role as the Marketing Assistant for 3 years. I then worked at Musselburgh Racecourse for 18 months and returned to York in March 2019.

WHAT LOCAL TIP WOULD YOU GIVE A VISITOR TO THE CITY OF YORK? Spend an extra day in the County, Knaresborough for a walk along the river then onto Harrogate for something to eat are both worth a visit!

WHAT IS YOUR RACEDAY ROLE AT YORK RACECOURSE? I am the Media Liaison on a raceday, which involves looking after the journalists, broadcasters, and photographers; ensuring they are getting the information they need. I also communicate with the sponsors both before and during a raceday to ensure that their day is going as planned, from social media posts to remembering the winner’s rug!

THINKING OF RACING PERSONALITIES, PAST AND PRESENT, WHAT QUESTION WOULD YOU MOST LIKE TO ASK THEM?

What makes them love the sport so much.

WHICH YORK RACEDAY WOULD YOU ATTEND IF YOU WERE NOT WORKING? I would attend the Friday evening of Music Showcase Weekend. Racing followed by some live music is a perfect way to start a weekend - Kaiser Chiefs were my favourites.

AT THE END OF A RACEDAY AT YORK RACECOURSE, TELL US WHAT MAKES A GOOD RACEDAY FOR YOU IN YOUR ROLE?

That all the sponsors have been happy with their day, that the media managed to get their stories. I am lucky enough to see all the lovely comments that racegoers send to our social media, reading through them is normally a nice end to the day.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVOURITE WINNING PERFORMANCE AT YORK? Lil Sophella (pictured above), who was my Grandma’s horse, won the EBF & Frank Whittle Partnership race in May 2016.

WHO IS YOUR FAVOURITE RACEHORSE, PAST OR PRESENT?

My current favourite racehorse is Lord Glitters. I am a sucker for a grey and have really enjoyed following his career, home and away.

IF YOU COULD SHARE A TABLE IN THE VOLTIGEUR WITH 5 PEOPLE FROM RACING OVER THE YEARS WHO WOULD THEY BE?

14

I would have loved to have spent another afternoon with Peter Beaumont, a true gentleman who is a key reason to why I work in the racing industry now. If he hadn’t treated my family so well when my Dad got his first racehorse I do not think my love for the sport would be what it is now. Though another from the jumps code, I couldn’t not put Rachael Blackmore. I have followed her career from very early on and have loved seeing her make history. Another record-breaking jockey Hollie Doyle, she has always been a pleasure to speak to and proves that hard work that I’ve spied her doing at Oaksey House, gets results. So I can chat Lord Glitters and more, then Danny Tudhope, who is a fantastic northern based jockey. To guide our musings, Ed Chamberlin would complete an experience for the ages.

WHERE CAN I PLACE A B T

There are various points and different ways to bet here at York. 1. Place a bet with the tote. 2. You can go to the betting ring. 3. Use a William Hill Retail SP Betting Shop. With over 300 tote betting points located around the course, there is always one nearby. The main betting ring is situated in front of the Knavesmire Stand with an additional ring in Course Enclosure and sometimes a third set of bookies on Bustardthorpe Lawn. There are three William Hill Retail SP betting shops at York; one at the southern end of the stands, the second on the ground floor of the Knavesmire Stand and the third being the refurbished shop on the ground floor of the Melrose Stand. In addition, racegoers in the Clocktower Enclosure will find a William Hill Retail SP facility underneath the clock tower. PLACING YOUR BET WITH A BOOKMAKER Shop around for the best odds against your selection. When you have decided on where to place your bet, state the number of your chosen horse and the stake, for example “number 4, £2 win”. Listen to the bookmaker repeat the number of the horse and the stake to his/ her clerk and hand your stake to the bookmaker. You will then be given an itemised receipt that gives details of the bet and shows potential winnings. You should keep this ticket safe. COLLECTING YOUR WINNINGS If your selection wins (or, in the case of a place bet, is placed), hand the ticket back to the bookmaker for settlement. NEVER destroy your ticket until after the “Weighed In” announcement has been made. There may still be a stewards enquiry and the first past the post, or placed horses, may be disqualified. On rare occasions even the horse coming fourth has been awarded the race. You may bet with confidence with any bookmaker as they have all been approved by the Administration Of Gambling On Tracks Limited, which administers the betting rings at each of Britain’s 59 racecourses. The AGT also offers a full late pay service, in case a bookmaker leaves the course before you have collected your winnings. Late Pay Claims should be sent to Administration Of Gambling On Tracks Limited, 3a, Kings Hall, Parsons Green, St Ives, Cambs, PE27 4WY.

WAYS TO BET STRAIGHT EACH WAY

Win Only A bookmaker taking each way bets will display the terms on which he/ she accepts such bets on the top of his/her board. This is a bet for your selection to win or be placed. In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting. • Fewer than 3 runners - all on to win • 3 or 4 runners – all on to win. Where a bookmaker wishes to depart from this default position he may offer place terms. This must be at 1/5 odds a place 1,2 • 5 – 7 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2 • 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3 • Handicaps with 12 to 15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3 • Handicaps with 16 to 21 runners (inclusive) – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3,4 • Handicaps with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3,4 AWAY BETTING Many bookmakers will also take bets at the other race meetings today. They offer a comprehensive service, including bets settled TAX FREE at Starting Price (S.P.).

BETTING WITHOUT THE FAVOURITE

At reduced odds you can back a horse and collect if it wins or runs second to the horse nominated by the bookmaker as favourite.

STRAIGHT FORECAST

Name the first and second in the correct order.

In the unlikely event of a dispute with a bookmaker, please call upon the assistance of the AGT Betting Ring Manager. Their office is located near the Theakston Bar to the South of the main Betting Ring.

Official BHA Ratings The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. Racing Post Standard Times is an independent assessment based on how long it should take a 90 rated horse to win on Good To Firm ground at York. Race tactics, rail movements, and wind direction are amongst the many factors to also affect the time for each specific race. Non-runner Ground - The Trainer states the ground is not suitable for this horse, the official going has changed since the time of declaration. Vet - The Trainer states the horse is subject to a Veterinary Certificate. Self Certificate - The trainer has advised the authorities that the horse is not able to race today.

You must be 18 or over to place a bet You may be asked to provide proof of your age when placing a bet If you cannot produce this your bet will not be accepted

RACE DESCRIPTION

We begin in handicap company, over a mile and limited to the babies of the sport, aged just two. Remember, the independent assessor (the handicapper) hopes to give every horse an equal chance by balancing out their weights. The horse considered by the handicapper as the best will carry the most weight; La Pulga takes top burden this time. Consult the Press Selections Board by the Winners Enclosure for advice or just for someone else to blame.

LAST YEAR’S RACE Winner: THE FLYING GINGER Trainer: Roger Fell Jockey: Ben Curtis Age/Weight: 2-8-10 SP: 25/1 Runners: 11 A real gutsy performance from an unlikely runner if the market was to be believed. The Flying Ginger really did fly to win the race last year and eventually got his head in front in the shadows of the post.

KNAVESMIRE TIP Hamaki is one of several progressive types in this line-up and he demands respect chasing down the hat-trick. However, the ground could be slow enough for him and narrow preference is for the top-rated LA PULGA. He has done little wrong in five starts to date and probably produced a career-best performance when a neck behind subsequent winner Desert Angel over this trip at Doncaster last time. He didn’t mind the cut in the ground there and should go well again, while Dark Moon Rising, Spacer and Desert Angel are just a few more with claims.

Six Furlongs (1,200 metres) See page 77 for conditions of this race.

RACE DESCRIPTION

This race is part of the Pattern pyramid (think divisions in football) which denotes the best contests, Listed (such as this), Group 3, Group 2, rising to Group 1. This means it is in the top 300 races in the land. Only open to two-year-old horses yet weight allowances mean the colts (boys) would start with more weight than any fillies (girls) to reflect their greater strength; note how Esken Rose is one of six to carry the lighter burden. An in-form stable could be the clue here, see the table at the beginning of this race.

LAST YEAR’S RACE Winner: NASTASE Trainer: Mick Channon Jockey: David Probert Age/Weight: 2-9-1 SP: 25/1 Runners: 8 After not getting off to the best start, David Probert was forced to drop his mount in the rear for the first couple of furlongs. They went a ferocious pace, which allowed Nastase to reserve his energy before coming with a powerful run to take victory.

KNAVESMIRE TIP Plenty of these have claims but none more so than EVER GIVEN, who won a valuable sales race over C&D in August and he was far from disgraced when narrowly beaten in a similar event last time. Canonized was narrowly denied in a Group 3 at Ayr three weeks ago and she is an obvious threat to the selection. Gisburn has been off the track since Royal Ascot but he cannot be discounted on his return, while Alotaibi and Hellomydarlin are others to consider.

3rd Race 2.37 The Play Coral Racing-Super-Series For Free Stakes

1m 2f Handicap 96-110 £30,000 3+ Inside Rail

One Mile, Two Furlongs About 56 Yards (2,000 metres) See page 77 for conditions of this race.

RACE DESCRIPTION

A competitive handicap for 3yo and older horses, over one mile and two furlongs. The high handicap rating band of 96-110 means that it will attract some pretty smart types (like for wannabe Ashes cricketers a score of over 100 denotes a top performer). The horse considered by the independent assessment of the handicapper as the best, will carry the most weight, Sinjaari, in this one. If you are seeking inspiration (or someone to blame), listen in to the Punters Panel at 12.45pm.

LAST YEAR’S RACE Winner: ILARAAB Trainer: William Haggas Jockey: Daniel Tudhope Age/Weight: 3-8-13 SP: 3/1F Runners: 13 The progressive Ilaraab was once again too good his rivals and completed an excellent five-timer. He continued his trend of not winning by much, and must be a handicapper’s nightmare, it was another excellent performance from an exciting colt.

KNAVESMIRE TIP All eyes will be on impressive London Gold Cup winner Bay Bridge as he returns from a five-month absence. A 15lb rise may be enough to stop him in his tracks, though, with preference for the unexposed FAISAL, who almost brought up the four-timer at Doncaster when denied by subsequent Cambridgeshire runner-up Anmaat. Hollie Doyle’s mount could still have leeway from a mark of 99 and he can get the better of course specialist Sinjaari, who has performed with credit since joining Roger Charlton. Cockalorum has each-way possibilities.

4th Race 3.15 The Coral Sprint Trophy

Six Furlongs (1,200 metres)

6f Heritage Handicap 0-105 £100,000 3+ Centre

See page 77 for conditions of this race.

RACE DESCRIPTION

Our feature race of today, the Coral Sprint Trophy is a handicap that is open to 3yo+ horses over six furlongs; back with a six-figure purse. This race is open to any horse up to a rating of 105. The highest rated horse today will be Air Raid. Need some help? Look further for the letter “C”, which shows that the horse has won at York or “D” which denotes a win over this distance; obviously defending champion, Gulliver, is one which qualifies on both counts.

KNAVESMIRE TIP Commanche Falls got the better of Gulliver to land the Stewards’ Cup and then finished seventh in the Ayr Gold Cup, behind Mr Wagyu (third), but ahead of Volatile Analyst (12th), Gulliver (13th), Popmaster (17th), Mr Lupton (20th) and Just Frank (22nd). Ayr Silver Cup winner Staxton got the better of Magical Spirit (fourth), Strike Red (seventh), Rathbone (10th) and Boardman (12th) and has claims, but this could go the way of NOMADIC EMPIRE. David O’Meara’s sprinter has improved rapidly in recent outings and could follow up a recent C&D win in this.

THANKYOU

The support of so many people connected to York Racecourse has seen over £280,000 raised for Macmillan Cancer Support and other good causes, in this most difficult of years, when charities need our help more than ever. Given the unusual circumstances, there were three bites at the cherry, Macmillan Charity Raceday in June, the fabulous efforts of those involved in the Ernest Cooper Ride of Their Lives last month, as well as the Hopes and Dreams Charity Ball. The raceday is the biggest single event fundraiser for Macmillan and the efforts of Matt Ascough from the York team means that his Hopes and Dreams Ball makes the biggest contribution from an event planned by an individual. Congratulate him with us as he hands over the cheque after the 3.40pm race today. Thank you to everyone.

BETTING Why have Coral been linked to this day since 1979, read on - Kaldoun Kingdom and Sirius Prospect remain the only two winning favourites in the ten renewals, and with only two other winners coming from the first two in the betting, this race is one in which the market leaders should be taken on. In fact, nine of the last ten winners have been priced 10/1 or higher so don’t be afraid to look for runners at a bigger price. AGE Whilst a definitive pattern is difficult to find, it is easy to see that the eight-year-old Regal Parade was an exceptional winner of the race with regards to age. Horses aged between three and five have accounted for eight of the last ten winners as well as filling the first few places in many of the past ten years' races, so it may be prudent to avoid those aged six and upwards. OFFICIAL RATINGS Spinatrix was the highest rated winner since 2001, when successful off an official mark of 105 in 2014. At the other end of the scale, only two recent winners of the race were rated 94 or lower but as the prize money has improved then so does the quality, so lower rated horses are struggling to get into the race. Gulliver was rated 95 when winning it for the first time but was clearly understimated by the handicapper. CONCLUSION

WEIGHT Considering that nine of the last ten winners carried 9st 3lb or more to victory, it appears that it is now best to focus on those with higher weights when looking at the Coral Sprint Trophy. Only one of the last eight winners defied this trend so the point on the increasing quality is confirmed. DRAW No surprise to the Clerk but there does not appear to be any draw bias as the last ten winners of the race have come from right across the course. The lower stalls (1-9) have edged ahead in recent years having produced seven of those winners. If you look at even more closely the last four winners have come from six or lower, it could be that's where you'd ideally want to be, enjoy the debate. TRAINER David O'Meara has really begun to assert his dominance over the last 10 years and has won the race in back to back years. Kevin Ryan had previously won the race in 2017 & 2018 so it could well pay to keep a close eye on their runners. KEY TRENDS Take On The Market Leader Horses Trained 'Up North' Nine Of The Last Ten Winners Carried 9st 3lb or more

This year’s race looks as competitive as ever with very little to split the main protagonists. GULLIVER is looking to make it a famous three timer in the race after winning our last two renewals. David O'Meara also saddles NOMADIC EMPIRE, he's already won his last two starts and goes looking for his own hattrick. Michael Dods has a good strike rate in recent years and his runner COMMANCHE FALLS wouldn't be without a chance. As alluded to in the trends, lower draws have had a lot of success so pay close attention to MR WAGYU, PUNCHBOWL FLYER and STRIKE RED. Billy Garrity takes a valuable 3lb off the latter and from a low draw he could prove a lively threat to the market principles. COPPER KNIGHT fits right into the Yorkshire based trainer trend and carries a handy 9st 6lb, so could certainly have an each-way shout. On the balance, the pick would be MR WAGYU, who is Yorkshire trained with a nice low draw. Statistics supplied by an independent analyst. All trends are ten year based unless stated. 57

The Coral Sprint Trophy

FACT FILE: WHEN DID THE RACE BEGIN?

Distance Six furlongs

Prize money £100,000

Today’s feature race began life in 1979 as a conditions race with a prize fund of £8,000. After five renewals the race was reclassified as a handicap. The race has continued to blossom and now offers prize money of £100,000.

HAS IT ALWAYS ATTRACTED BIG FIELDS?

Yes, only when Handsome Sailor won in 1986 for Michael Dickinson did the field fall into single figures. Over the past ten years, the average field size has been around about 20 runners. Today the new super size stalls that York Racecourse purchased means 22 were declared.

WHO WAS THE FIRST WINNER?

Runnett, partnered by Willie Carson carrying a whopping 10st 1lb, beat four rivals in 1979. For the next two years the race attracted small, but top quality fields. Steve Cauthen won on Jester the following season and the locally trained flying mare Soba was an odds-on winner under the late David “Dandy” Nicholls 30 years ago.

HOW FARES THE FAVOURITE?

Not very well. Traditionally, the race has been a graveyard for favourite backers with just a handful of market leaders having scored in two decades. Kaldoun Kingdom ended a miserable run for market leaders when prevailing at odds of 6/1 in 2009 for Richard Fahey, and in 2011 Sirius Prospect also justified his place at the head of the market when landing victory at odds of 13/2. Prior to that you needed to go back to 1995 and Double Bounce to find an outright winning favourite.

ANY NOTABLE NAMES ON THE ROLL OF HONOUR? The Tatling won in 2002 and the gelding became a top sprinter with 17 victories and earnings of more than £680,000. His victories included the King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot and he was runner-up three times in the Group 1 Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes here on Knavesmire. Meanwhile, Borderlescott won this is 2005 and he is of course a dual winner of the Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes having triumphed in the Group 1 sprint in 2008 and 2009.

Borderlescott

David O'Meara

LEADING TRAINERS?

David O'Meara is no stranger to having winner's at York and has added the Coral Sprint Trophy to the races he now targets. Gulliver has been the source of his most recent success but he also won the race with Intisaab back in 2016. He has added to the Yorkshire-based trainers prevelance in the race and it does pay to follow their runners. Gulliver once again takes his place for O'Meara and is joined by Nomadic Empire. Kevin Ryan also has had winners of the race in 2017 and 2018, Magical Spirit and Rathbone line up for his yard and it looks a hot renewal.

LEADING RIDER? Frankie Dettori has the joint best record amongst current jockeys with two wins for Luca Cumani on Khaydara in 1990 and Double Bounce in 1995, as well as victory in 2004 on Jonny Ebeneezer. However, he won’t be adding to that tally today as he is engaged to ride at Newmarket. PJ McDonald also has two wins in the race and he's on board the wide drawn Snash- perhaps he can jump above Frankie if Charlie Hill's charge puts his best foot forward at 3.15pm.

HOW DO YORKSHIRE STABLES FIGURE?

The Easterby family have been worth following. Peter won it twice with Polly’s Brother and with Cumbrian Waltzer in 1991 while son Tim saddled Bollin Joanne to take the prize in 1996 after he had taken over the licence at their Habton Grange Stables. Tim’s uncle Mick Easterby also scored with Benzoe in 1993. This afternoon Mick isn't represented, but Tim has York's winning most horse Copper Knight, Ayr Silver Cup winner Staxton and Boardman. Based across town, David O'Meara has won three of the last seven runnings, in 2016 with Intisaab and in 2019 & 2020 with Gulliver. The 2017 & 2018 winner, Kevin Ryan, has two entered this year in the shape of Rathbone and Magical Spirit.

About Seven Furlongs (1,400 metres)

See page 77 for conditions of this race.

RACE DESCRIPTION

This race is limited to 2yo horses and inexperienced ones at that, over seven furlongs. Fillies start with a lower weight than their male counterparts see how Invasive has the lowest burden. At the other end of the scale, Another Investment gets additional lead given his success here last month. All are registered with the European Breeders’ Fund. This means that their sire (father) is based and registered in Europe with the EBF, which is a scheme to encourage the best in bloodstock. This race also qualifies under the Plus 10 bonus scheme. The advice is to rely on your choice of the two ‘p’s; pedigree or pin!

LAST YEAR’S RACE Winner: BARADAR Trainer: Roger Varian Jockey: David Egan Age/Weight: 2-9-8 SP: 6/5F Runners: 9 Took a keen hold but soon settled in behind the leaders who had half the field beaten three furlongs from home. KNAVESMIRE TIP Nigel Tinkler was at a loss to explain the improvement shown by Another Investment here last time but he ran on strongly to score over a furlong shorter and is interesting. Giving weight to MATVEI PLATOV could prove too difficult, though, as Richard Fahey’s colt ran his best race to date when second on soft ground at Hamilton. Any improvement on that run could make him tough to beat. Speranzoso ran creditably on debut, while newcomer Elsals is worth a market check.

CARING FOR THE HORSES AT YORK RACECOURSE

5

64

Looking after the horses is a priority at York and every raceday there is a team of experienced equine vets on constant call. Much of their work is done before racing actually starts, being on hand to check horses over and reassure connections. As part of the Northern End Development the vets have their own office, a large treatment box and a dedicated “stock box” to help them assess and treat the stars of our show. If there is an incident during a race, prompt attention to horse and rider is provided by the modern ambulances, you will see them parked by the track, ready for a rapid response. Like most courses York will often use green screens during an incident, these offer privacy to those involved and their presence does not necessarily signify bad news. Keeping cool is important to a racehorse so you might see them using the horse showers in the new wash down area or the cold water provided in the parade ring and at every start. If you spot a mist cloud behind the saddling boxes that means the horses are benefiting from the cooling power of the special water-misting fans. If a horse loses a shoe or ‘spreads a plate’, then there is a farrier at every start, as well as in their dedicated box by the pre parade ring, to put it right and let the racing commence. Remember a farrier shoes horses, a blacksmith makes gates or the impressive fretwork on the front of the future Weighing Room. As you enjoy your meeting, you can rest assured the horses are being well cared for by the racecourse team and their own dedicated stable staff.

He is preferred to smart jumper Gumball, who showed that he is effective on the Flat with a good third at Salisbury in May, since when he has joined the Fergal O’Brien team. Red Force One ran well enough for third at Catterick and could be dangerous lurking at the foot of the weights.

7th Race 5.00 The Coral Proud Sponsors Of British Racing Finale Stakes

1m 2f Handicap 76-95 £17,500 3+ Inside Rail

One Mile, Two Furlongs About 56 Yards (2,000 metres) See page 77 for conditions of this race.

RACE DESCRIPTION

We end where we began, a handicap, this one is for 3yo+ horses over ten furlongs. “Offer a chance for everyone” is a good maxim for those planning races and in this contest the upper rating of 95 means that though these are still quality horses, they wouldn’t have fancied their chances against the winner of our third race. If you win this race you can claim bragging rights until we start the 2022 season on Wednesday 11 May. Thank you for your support over this unusual year, Happy Christmas.

LAST YEAR’S RACE Winner: MARRONNIER Trainer: Stuart Williams Jockey: Sean Levey Age/Weight: 4-9-12 SP: 8/1 Runners: 14 After being held up in midfield for most of the race, he showed a great staying attitude to pick his rivals off one by one to lead inside the final 100 yards. It was a great effort under top weight in testing conditions to bring the season to a close.

KNAVESMIRE TIP Last Look is very interesting given Saeed bin Suroor’s recent form with horses returning from a break. She was last seen contesting the Group 2 Balanchine at Meydan in February and it would come as no surprise if she went very close now her sights are lowered. Jean Baptiste and Lucander performed well enough in the Cambridgeshire and cannot be overlooked, but TARROOB is preferred for the in-form William Haggas yard. She has had a wind operation since her narrow Wolverhampton reverse in July and might take a big step forward.
