Welcome Welcome to York for the Finale Meeting of 2021, a day with seven fascinating races offering prize money approaching £200,000 not to mention sheepdogs, ducks, two bands, retired racehorses and a market open to all stand side racegoers, on the ground floor of the Ebor Stand. For all of that is has been an unusual race season, it has also been a tremendous one on the track so far, with some of the very best racehorses and jockeys in the world having competed at York, the likes of Mishriff, Snowfall, Hurricane Lane, Winter Power and Stradivarius, making memories for us all. I hope you have enjoyed an action-packed season to date and thank you for your support. This afternoon’s feature race is the £75,000 Casumo backed stayers handicap for three-year-olds over 14 furlongs. A fancied runner will be Mahrajaan from the William Haggas yard, already successful on three occasions this season. A strong showing could see connections interested in a return for the Sky Bet Ebor on Saturday 20 August 2022 over the same trip. The fifth race today celebrates Copper Knight, simply the winning most horse on the Knavesmire in the modern era. Since the Denham family first raced their favourite here at York, he has already won on six occasions from sixteen starts. Trained by this season’s current leading trainer at York, Tim Easterby, the first win was on his Knavesmire debut back in May 2017. Consider his only pattern race success so far also came here, when taking the John Smith’s City Walls of 2019 and you see why the now seven-year-old got such a roar after victory number six on the opening day of the Welcome to Yorkshire Ebor Festival. You can see a plaque in his honour on the pre parade ring side of the Weighing Room, you’ll notice we have just said “winning most”, as he may well not be done with the six-timer as he runs in tomorrow’s Coral Sprint Trophy! With success in eleven races already, notably a pattern race treble courtesy of Coolmore Nunthorpe winner, Winter Power, Tim Easterby sits at the top of the Charles Clinkard backed Trainer’s Championship. Having at least one runner in every race shows a determination to returning the trophy to Great Habton, where it last resided back in 1999. Yet, with fourteen races still to play for, a number of handlers could come out of the chasing pack with defending champion, David O’Meara and nine-time winner Richard Fahey, still striving for a remarkable finale. See ox for more details on this season’s competition. The meeting will also see the conclusion of the season long contest to be top jockey at York. In the Living North-sponsored race, a long-time favourite of the Northern circuit David Allen, sits two behind the talented Tom Marquand. Others will retain hopes that their northern connections may herald a late charge, especially with Tom set to ride at Newmarket today. Please see page 47 for the story so far. If you are on stands side in either County Stand or Grandstand & Paddock, do visit the Countryside market on the ground floor of the Ebor Stand which may provide an early Christmas present (see page 14). As a further part of Countryside Day see the sheepdogs on the Edwardian Weighing Room Lawn. We have some top class racing today, made possible by both your support and the backing of our partners and sponsors; Casumo, Parsonage Country House Hotel, the connections of Copper Knight, European Breeders’ Fund and it being a Friday, one final visit for this year from the team at Irish Thoroughbred Marketing. Thank you for your support, I hope you enjoy your afternoon.

A RACECOURSE FOR ALL

We want the racecourse to offer both a welcome and an enjoyable day to all our racegoers and in delivering that we recognise that some may need additional assistance from us.

The first thing to say, please just ask for help, if the team don’t have an instant answer, then they know someone who will. The team in the Racecourse Reception (behind the Ebor Stand) act as the link to the rest of the team, as needed. FAQS Is there disabled and blue badge parking? Yes, I hope you found it. All our car parks have designated spaces near their front row. Can I get help with getting to/from the car park, taxi rank or shuttle buses? Yes, there is a complimentary buggy service to all these points, ask at racecourse reception or next time you arrive just call 01904 620911. Thank you for your patience as the buggies can only transfer 4 people at a time and it’s a big site. Can I bring a wheelchair? Yes, if you need to; but we also offer complimentary hire, again from Racecourse Reception (see told you they were the hub). As we hope you’ll appreciate, there are only so many wheelchairs on site, if you need to reserve in advance then call 01904 620911. Can I bring somebody to help? Yes, we appreciate that will come in various forms, we hope our “carer comes free” scheme is a help, before your next visit check it out online at www.yorkracecourse.co.uk or just ask the team today. Are there wheelchair viewing platforms? Yes, in all stand side area and Stands - easiest thing to do is to ask our Stewards, though a map is available from, you guessed it, Racecourse Reception. Please use these in the spirit intended, with carers being prepared to step aside to allow space for those who need the view the most. What about toilets and are they part of the Radar scheme? Yes they are, all the permanent toilet blocks have a disabled capability, please ask for directions or check that map from you know where. Are their wheelchair height food and drink counters? Yes there are but not as many as we’d like, please ask a member of the team to assist you. Wheelchair height betting? Yes, there are some Tote counters set at a reduced height though a better plan might be to use the courier service that operates in areas such as the main Champagne Lawns; the Tote team themselves are always willing to help. There was one more thing? Please ask, we value your feedback so we can keep improving in this area.

FACES BEHIND THE RACES:

MAITI STIRLING Marketing & Sponsorship Executive

HOW MANY YEARS HAVE YOU WORKED AT YORK RACECOURSE?

This is my third season in my current role. Before that I was the Marketing Assistant for 3 seasons.

OUTSIDE THE RACEDAYS AT YORK, WHAT DO YOU DO THE REST OF THE YEAR?

Plan for the following season! I oversee all the production of the brochures for the following season and update the website.

HOW DID YOU BECOME INVOLVED IN RACING AT YORK

From when I was 10 years old my family have been involved in racing. When at university I emailed York asking if there were any summer roles available, I worked on the Pink Lady team then in the Owners & Trainers Restaurant. That led to a role as the Marketing Assistant for 3 years. I then worked at Musselburgh Racecourse for 18 months and returned to York in March 2019.

WHAT LOCAL TIP WOULD YOU GIVE A VISITOR TO THE CITY OF YORK? Spend an extra day in the County, Knaresborough for a walk along the river then onto Harrogate for something to eat are both worth a visit!

WHAT IS YOUR RACEDAY ROLE AT YORK RACECOURSE? I am the Media Liaison on a raceday, which involves looking after the journalists, broadcasters, and photographers; ensuring they are getting the information they need. I also communicate with the sponsors both before and during a raceday to ensure that their day is going as planned, from social media posts to remembering the winner’s rug!

THINKING OF RACING PERSONALITIES, PAST AND PRESENT, WHAT QUESTION WOULD YOU MOST LIKE TO ASK THEM?

What makes them love the sport so much.

WHICH YORK RACEDAY WOULD YOU ATTEND IF YOU WERE NOT WORKING? I would attend the Friday evening of Music Showcase Weekend. Racing followed by some live music is a perfect way to start a weekend - Kaiser Chiefs were my favourites.

AT THE END OF A RACEDAY AT YORK RACECOURSE, TELL US WHAT MAKES A GOOD RACEDAY FOR YOU IN YOUR ROLE?

That all the sponsors have been happy with their day, that the media managed to get their stories. I am lucky enough to see all the lovely comments that racegoers send to our social media, reading through them is normally a nice end to the day.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVOURITE WINNING PERFORMANCE AT YORK? Lil Sophella (pictured above), who was my Grandma’s horse, won the EBF & Frank Whittle Partnership race in May 2016.

WHO IS YOUR FAVOURITE RACEHORSE, PAST OR PRESENT?

My current favourite racehorse is Lord Glitters. I am a sucker for a grey and have really enjoyed following his career, home and away.

IF YOU COULD SHARE A TABLE IN THE VOLTIGEUR WITH 5 PEOPLE FROM RACING OVER THE YEARS WHO WOULD THEY BE?

16

I would have loved to have spent another afternoon with Peter Beaumont, a true gentleman who is a key reason to why I work in the racing industry now. If he hadn’t treated my family so well when my Dad got his first racehorse I do not think my love for the sport would be what it is now. Though another from the jumps code, I couldn’t not put Rachael Blackmore. I have followed her career from very early on and have loved seeing her make history. Another record-breaking jockey Hollie Doyle, she has always been a pleasure to speak to and proves that hard work that I’ve spied her doing at Oaksey House, gets results. So I can chat Lord Glitters and more, then Danny Tudhope, who is a fantastic northern based jockey. To guide our musings, Ed Chamberlin would complete an experience for the ages.

WHERE CAN I PLACE A B T

There are various points and different ways to bet here at York. 1. Place a bet with the tote. 2. You can go to the betting ring. 3. Use a William Hill Retail SP Betting Shop. With over 300 tote betting points located around the course, there is always one nearby. The main betting ring is situated in front of the Knavesmire Stand with an additional ring in Course Enclosure and sometimes a third set of bookies on Bustardthorpe Lawn. There are three William Hill Retail SP betting shops at York; one at the southern end of the stands, the second on the ground floor of the Knavesmire Stand and the third being the refurbished shop on the ground floor of the Melrose Stand. In addition, racegoers in the Clocktower Enclosure will find a William Hill Retail SP facility underneath the clock tower. PLACING YOUR BET WITH A BOOKMAKER Shop around for the best odds against your selection. When you have decided on where to place your bet, state the number of your chosen horse and the stake, for example “number 4, £2 win”. Listen to the bookmaker repeat the number of the horse and the stake to his/ her clerk and hand your stake to the bookmaker. You will then be given an itemised receipt that gives details of the bet and shows potential winnings. You should keep this ticket safe. COLLECTING YOUR WINNINGS If your selection wins (or, in the case of a place bet, is placed), hand the ticket back to the bookmaker for settlement. NEVER destroy your ticket until after the “Weighed In” announcement has been made. There may still be a stewards enquiry and the first past the post, or placed horses, may be disqualified. On rare occasions even the horse coming fourth has been awarded the race. You may bet with confidence with any bookmaker as they have all been approved by the Administration Of Gambling On Tracks Limited, which administers the betting rings at each of Britain’s 59 racecourses. The AGT also offers a full late pay service, in case a bookmaker leaves the course before you have collected your winnings. Late Pay Claims should be sent to Administration Of Gambling On Tracks Limited, 3a, Kings Hall, Parsons Green, St Ives, Cambs, PE27 4WY.

WAYS TO BET STRAIGHT EACH WAY

Win Only A bookmaker taking each way bets will display the terms on which he/ she accepts such bets on the top of his/her board. This is a bet for your selection to win or be placed. In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting. • Fewer than 3 runners - all on to win • 3 or 4 runners – all on to win. Where a bookmaker wishes to depart from this default position he may offer place terms. This must be at 1/5 odds a place 1,2 • 5 – 7 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2 • 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3 • Handicaps with 12 to 15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3 • Handicaps with 16 to 21 runners (inclusive) – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3,4 • Handicaps with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3,4 AWAY BETTING Many bookmakers will also take bets at the other race meetings today. They offer a comprehensive service, including bets settled TAX FREE at Starting Price (S.P.).

BETTING WITHOUT THE FAVOURITE

At reduced odds you can back a horse and collect if it wins or runs second to the horse nominated by the bookmaker as favourite.

STRAIGHT FORECAST

Name the first and second in the correct order.

In the unlikely event of a dispute with a bookmaker, please call upon the assistance of the AGT Betting Ring Manager. Their office is located near the Theakston Bar to the South of the main Betting Ring.

Official BHA Ratings The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. Racing Post Standard Times is an independent assessment based on how long it should take a 90 rated horse to win on Good To Firm ground at York. Race tactics, rail movements, and wind direction are amongst the many factors to also affect the time for each specific race. Non-runner Ground - The Trainer states the ground is not suitable for this horse, the official going has changed since the time of declaration. Vet - The Trainer states the horse is subject to a Veterinary Certificate. Self Certificate - The trainer has advised the authorities that the horse is not able to race today.

You must be 18 or over to place a bet You may be asked to provide proof of your age when placing a bet If you cannot produce this your bet will not be accepted

5f 89y Handicap 0-95 £17,000 2 Centre

Five Furlongs About 89 Yards 1,000 metres) See page 75 for conditions of this race.

RACE DESCRIPTION A competitive handicap for 2yo horses, run over the unusual trip of five and a half furlongs. Designed for close competition, the handicapper is the independent assessor who rates horses on past performance seeking to get them crossing the line together, by handing out differing weights. The best will be the highest rated on past form, Korker here, so will carry more weight. Listen to the Punters Panel at 1.15pm to hear the expert’s view.

LAST YEAR’S RACE Winner: IMPERIUM BLUE Trainer: Nigel Tinkler Jockey: Faye McManoman Age/Weight: 2-8-4 Runners: 10 SP: 25/1 After being hesitant going into the stalls the Nigel Tinkler trained gelding needed no help in finding the finishing line and kept on well to win by a length.

KNAVESMIRE TIP Maybe Even Never puts his unbeaten record on the line and the Nigel Tinkler-trained juvenile merits the utmost respect. This will require further improvement, though, and it may pay to side with INSTINCTIVE MOVE, who has been a consistent colt this term. The son of Showcasing has been edging in the right direction and, although he was held by Korker last time out at Haydock, he can reverse the form with a 4lb swing in his favour. Lady Of Yapham also warrants interest after venturing into Group company last month.

RACE DESCRIPTION This race is limited to 2yo horses that are still learning their trade and is over five furlongs. All are registered with the European Breeders’ Fund. This means that their sire (father) is based and registered in Europe with the EBF, which is a scheme to encourage the best in bloodstock. This race also qualifies under the Plus 10 bonus scheme. Those who have discovered the winner’s enclosure already, carry an extra burden, witness Bond Chairman after his Musselburgh success. The advice is to rely on your choice of the two ‘p’s pedigree or pin!

KNAVESMIRE TIP Bond Chairman sets the standard in this contest after keeping higher company but he has to concede plenty of weight. BARBANERA made a pleasing start to her racing career when posting a second-placed effort at Haydock last month and she gets the vote to break her maiden tag now dropped in distance. Selby’s Pride warrants respect after her Ripon success and is likely to be on the premises, while Glory Hallelujah and Rambuso Creek also make the shortlist.

Welcome to Racing to School Look out for the wonderful charity Racing to School today; you shouldn’t miss them as they will be leading a group of local pupils and their teachers through every corner of the racecourse for an action-packed day of fun challenges and discovery. The charity works nationwide with over 200 schools, running 350 events for 14,000 young people that we work with each year at UK racecourses, trainers’ yards and studs – staging free, outdoor activity days to support the learning and to boost the self-confidence of children aged nine and above. Racing to School uses these venues as unique, fast-moving classrooms full of opportunities to practise and improve subjects like maths, literacy and problem-solving. The charity is only able to support young people’s education through the kind donations it receives.

KNAVESMIRE TIP FAME AND ACCLAIM finished second on heavy ground at the Curragh in May and has run some decent races since that effort, including when third over C&D in July. He didn’t get the rub of the green when down the field at Ayr last time, but the return to softer ground may see him step forward. Raising Sand was last seen finishing third at the Shergar Cup at Ascot and he commands respect along with Shelir, who sports cheekpieces for the first time, and Orbaan.

CARING FOR THE HORSES AT YORK RACECOURSE

Looking after the horses is a priority at York and every raceday there is a team of experienced equine vets on constant call. Much of their work is done before racing actually starts, being on hand to check horses over and reassure connections. As part of the Northern End Development the vets have their own office, a large treatment box and a dedicated “stock box” to help them assess and treat the stars of our show. If there is an incident during a race, prompt attention to horse and rider is provided by the modern ambulances, you will see them parked by the track, ready for a rapid response. Like most courses York will often use green screens during an incident, these offer privacy to those involved and their presence does not necessarily signify bad news. Keeping cool is important to a racehorse so you might see them using the horse showers in the new wash down area or the cold water provided in the parade ring and at every start. If you spot a mist cloud behind the saddling boxes that means the horses are benefiting from the cooling power of the special water-misting fans. If a horse loses a shoe or ‘spreads a plate’, then there is a farrier at every start, as well as in their dedicated box by the pre parade ring, to put it right and let the racing commence. Remember a farrier shoes horses, a blacksmith makes gates or the impressive fretwork on the front of the future Weighing Room. As you enjoy your meeting, you can rest assured the horses are being well cared for by the racecourse team and their own dedicated stable staff. 51

RACE DESCRIPTION Getting the hang of handicaps? Your vital statistics for this race are; 3yo, rated 0-105, going one mile and three quarters. The most valuable race of the day, a good run might see connections interested in the Sky Bet Ebor next August, so take note of these potentially classy stayers. If you are looking for a tip then perhaps follow the racecourse tipster, Baron Ferdinand, who has marked his selections with a red bi plane.

KNAVESMIRE TIP MAHRAJAAN has improved rapidly this season, winning a novice stakes at Ripon with any amount in hand before following up on his handicap debut at Hamilton last time. The way he finished off that race over 1m4f on the stiff uphill finish in Scotland should mean this trip is well within his compass. Ravenscraig Castle was third in the Melrose here (Surrey Gold 8th, Charging Thunder 15th, Annandale 20th) and has to be respected, while Praiano is consistent enough to have his say in the outcome.

COPPER KNIGHT:

WINNING-MOST HORSE HERE

OUR FIFTH RACE CELEBRATES THE BELOVED COPPER KNIGHT. THE MOST SUCCESSFUL MODERN-DAY HORSE OVER THE KNAVESMIRE. The Denham family first ran Copper Knight at York back in 2017 when he won the first of his six races. It was an assertive performance over then stable mate Rasheeq and was very much a sign of things to come. He had further success at York before taking his most prestigious prize at the track. The John Smith’s City Walls Stakes 2019, his first Listed success. His superb sixth victory came at this year’s Welcome To Yorkshire Ebor Festival. A plaque has been erected in his honour on the pre-parade ring side of the weighing room, where it reads ‘winning most’, as he may well not be done with winning at York just yet! Race Name

Five Furlongs (1,000 metres) See page 75 for conditions of this race.

RACE DESCRIPTION Still a handicap this time for 3yo+ horses, at the other extreme of distance, just five furlongs. “Offer a chance for everyone” is a good maxim for those planning races and in this contest the upper rating of 95 means that though these are still quality horses, they won’t have their spotlight stolen by a pattern level contender. The victor of 2018 is celebrated in the title, it was one of a record six wins to date, for Copper Knight on the Knavesmire. Need some help? Why not thank or blame the Press by checking out their Selections Board, it’s adjacent to the Winner’s Enclosure.

LAST YEAR’S RACE Winner: MUSCIKA Trainer: David O’Meara Jockey: Angus Villiers Age/Weight: 6-8-11 Runners: 20 SP: 40/1 A surprise winner of our seventh race saw Musicka pick up in brilliant style to win like a horse at much shorter odds. An excellent performance from a horse that has done so well for connections.

KNAVESMIRE TIP SPOOF appeared to appreciate the slower ground in a strong-looking race at Ascot last time and he has every chance if he can build on that performance. Lahore hasn’t shown much this season, but he has been running in some big handicaps and may be able to make an impact as he returns to 5f after running in the Ayr Gold Cup. Showalong may appreciate the forecast soft ground as he has won both of his previous starts under those conditions, so he could be dangerous.

Distance: Race Type: Prize Money: Age: Stalls:

About One Mile (1,500 metres) See page 75 for conditions of this race.

RACE DESCRIPTION

Race six is limited to 2yo over a mile, so those still in their first season racing. All are registered with the European Breeders’ Fund. This means that their sire (father) is based and registered in Europe with the EBF, which is a scheme to encourage the best in bloodstock. When they were bought, at a recognised auction, the market was deemed as an assessment of their quality and so potential, the most expensive being categorised as Band A, the next group as Band B and so on. If you must know, the Band As went for above £50,000 descending in roughly £20,OOO bands thereafter. Any horse in higher Band racing in opposition to one from a lower Band must start by carrying two pounds in extra weight (see Gin O’Clock compared to Golden George); if a horse from a yet lower Band is in the same race, then the Band B horse carries two pounds more than the Band C contestant, meaning any Band A horse would be carrying four pounds (2+2) more than their Band C rival (so throw Trojan Horse into the mix, as an example). Stay with me, the principle from wider racing that winning would add weight for next time is applied by a previous winner having to carry a 6lb penalty, hence Damaar being top weight after a win on debut. The same principles apply for the fillies only they start with a lower weight so they can better compete against the boys, so Luna Dorada has less weight than a colt in her Band. If this all sounds a bit complicated then a pin is a proven method in these races.is your choice of “P”s, pedigree or pin.

LAST YEAR’S RACE Winner: ORGETORIX Trainer: Ralph Beckett Jockey: Harry Bentley Age/Weight: 2-9-5 SP: 5/2F Runners: 11 Ralph Beckett and Harry Bentley made it two wins on the Knavesmire with the two-year-old Orgetorix. Despite taking a keen hold, he left enough in tank to pick off Silvestris.

KNAVESMIRE TIP DAMAAR is difficult to oppose here having won his only start on a similar surface when running on up the Sandown hill over a furlong shorter. He may well be capable of giving weight away to newcomers Three Start, who represents an in-form yard, Luna Dorada, whose stable have won two of the last three runnings of this contest, and perhaps Muzaffar, whose pedigree makes him a very interesting contender here.

7th Race 5.25 The IRE Incentive, It Pays To Buy Irish Stakes

7f Handicap 61-80 £16,200 3+ Farside

About Seven Furlongs (1,400 metres)

See page 75 for conditions of this race.

RACE DESCRIPTION A farewell handicap open to horses 3 years plus, over 7 furlongs. Connections can reduce the weight carried by their contender by choosing to use an apprentice jockey; the level of the reduction depends on the past success of that apprentice. You can see this reflected in the bracketed figure after the rider’s name. See how Swiss Ace benefits from Joanna Mason’s 3lb claim. If you win this race you can claim bragging rights until we do it all for one last time, at 1.30pm tomorrow afternoon.

KNAVESMIRE TIP A competitive finale in which the soft ground throws up question marks for many. A market move for either of the handicap debutants Abbey Heights or Red Genesis could prove significant, but it may pay to stick with the improving UGO GREGORY who has only been raised 2lb for winning over this trip at Beverley last time and has proven form in the mud. Tashgheel is a potential player if this longer trip suits, while the likes of Separate, Zumurud and Outrun The Storm boast form to suggest they could represent some each-way value.
