THE JOCKEY CLUB WELCOMES YOU

It is a great pleasure to welcome you all to Sandown Park for our first ever Breeders' Day on the final Flat fixture of our season. Today is all about shining a light on thoroughbred breeders and the work that they do, which is integral to the continuing success of the horseracing industry. Today has been made possible with the help of our friends at the Thoroughbred Breeders' Association and Claire Sheppard, TBA Chief Executive, explains a little more about what you can expect below. Please look out for the QR code trail around the venue and use your smartphone to unlock behind the scenes content from some of the country’s top stud farm operations. At 1.15pm we will have a Retraining of Racehorses parade in the parade ring and there will be interviews with breeders throughout the day. All this in addition to seven competitive races, including the Listed Chasemore Farm Fortune Stakes. We would like to thank Whitsbury Manor Stud, The National Stud, Blandford Bloodstock, Chasemore Farm, Coln Valley Stud, Highclere Stud and Barton Stud for their extremely generous sponsorship of this afternoon's racing. We are delighted to be able to offer an additional memento to the breeder of the winner of each race today. I wish all the horses and their connections the best of luck today and hope that you all have a wonderful time with us here at Sandown Park. PHIL WHITE London Regional Director, The Jockey Club We are thrilled to be partnering with the team at Sandown Park Racecourse to deliver its first day dedicated to showcasing the thoroughbred breed and their breeders during National Racehorse Week. We aim to provide many opportunities for race fans to learn more about the early years of a racehorse, with interactive displays and competitions. At our trade stand, members of the TBA team will be on hand to answer any questions and provide information on further learning opportunities and how to get involved. We are thankful to Sandown Park for approaching us with the idea and for all of their support for this day. We hope that you enjoy it. CLAIRE SHEPPARD Chief Executive, the TBA

RETRAINING OF RACEHORSE Join us in the Parade Ring at 1.15pm for a parade of former racehorses now enjoying life as part of the RoR. Coneygree - ridden by Sara Bradstock and formerly trained by Mark Bradstock. The winner of the 2015 Cheltenham Gold Cup, when ridden by Nico de Boinville, Coneygree was retired in February 2019 but has adapted quickly to a life outside of racing. Since being re-trained by Mark’s wife Sara, Coneygree has won RoR showing classes and qualified for The Jockey Club RoR National Championships at Aintree where he won an In-Hand class and was placed in ridden showing classes. Sara and Coneygree’s ambition for 2021 was to qualify for the Tattersalls RoR Show Series Final at Hickstead which they succeeded and had a very enjoyable day. Side Glance - Ridden by Leanne White and formerly trained by Andrew Balding. Speaking about Side Glance, Leanne said “Sidey came to me in November 2019. I had looked after him in training but he went to a good friend of mine when he retired from racing in May 2015. He originally had a year turned away due to a tendon injury then did some showing and dressage. We did our first ‘Taster’ One Day Event a few weeks ago, where he was an absolute hero. It was his first time seeing a cross-country fence and he went clear! Next year I’d love to get him qualified for The Southern Dressage Championships at Blenheim, take him up to Aintree to compete in The Jockey Club RoR National RoR Show and hopefully do some low level eventing. Side Glance was an awesome racehorse, since retiring he has taken everything in his stride. He loves being kept busy, adores children and dogs and really has completed our family. He even carried me to the altar on my wedding day in 2019.”

ES PARADE First Fandango - Ridden by Hannah Chisman and formerly trained by Tim Vaughan. Hannah, who is travelling head girl to John Spearing, acquired First Fandango aka Freddie in July 2017 from his trainer Tim Vaughan. Since then the partnership has excelled in many different disciplines winning the Intro RoR Northern Dressage Final in 2019, many other show jumping classes and team chases and unaffiliated 100 events. In 2021 Freddie has been supreme of show at West Wilts, won the Tattersalls RoR Amateur final at Hickstead and most recently winning the RoR Amateur special and first reserve in the Elite at The Jockey Club RoR National Championships at Aintree. Thomas Crapper - Ridden by Jo Day and formerly trained by Robin Dickin. Thomas Crapper, known as 'Crappy' at home, was purchased as a foal from Goffs by Robin Dickin's wife Claire. From a young age he had a wonderful character with many human characteristics. Crappy knows exactly what he wants, he hates the snow and wont go out in it but he loves hunting and the solarium. Since retiring, he has been retrained by Harriet who has ridden him at home throughout both his racing career and new career. He has taken to hunting and showing, winning two classes at The Jockey Club RoR National Championships Jo Day who works at the yard is Crappy's number 1 fan! She does some RoR showing on him and regularly takes him on fun rides in the summer and Harriet hunts him in the winter! “Thomas Crapper will spend the rest of his life at Robin Dickin Racing, we owe him so much.” For more info visit ror.org.uk

PLAY SMARTER

FLYING WEST still hasn’t had much racing and it’s worth remembering she progressed well in the second half of her 3-y-o campaign, so she’s expected to bounce back from a poor showing at Lingfield in July with a bang. Alpine Mistral has a similar profile to the selection and could get back on track following a break/wind operation. Conversely, Spirit of The Bay is thriving and can’t be ignored.

Cases can be made for several, but the vote goes to HARSTON, who showed improved form to get off the mark on handicap debut at Lingfield in July. Light of Thunder showed much more on her second handicap start when third at Windsor last time so she’s feared most, ahead of Missile.

If an animal is left in a car and is panting for breath it may be starting to suffer from heatstroke, which can kill an animal very quickly. Please help us get this message across. It will save more animals from suffering and avoid the need to prosecute owners.

Notices

Weights, Pedigrees, Trainers’ Names, Descriptions, Performances and Values of races have been added for the convenience of the Public, but are subject to alteration. All horses must parade in the Parade Ring except by permission of the Stewards, but in all cases must pass through the Ring on the way to the Post. The Management reserves the right to refuse admission to anyone without assigning a reason for so doing.

Parade Ring Access

In the interests of safety, access to the parade ring is strictly limited to Owners and Trainers with runners in the race, British Horseracing Authority and Racecourse Officials who are on duty at the meeting and Emergency Service Personnel. Those people holding badges or accreditation that allow access to the Parade Ring are asked to refrain from entering this area unless it is absolutely necessary in the course of their business.

Photography

Racegoers may take photographs for private purposes in the public enclosures. Under no circumstances may photographs taken on the racecourse be used for publication without prior accreditation being obtained. Flash photography is not allowed anywhere on the Racecourse as it may distract or frighten horses.

Racehorse & Jockey Welfare

The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority. The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards. In addition Sandown Park Racecourse employs three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse. In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey. If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.
